ith Tag Days and the Christmas Clearinghouse behind them, the Interact Club [the Rotary’s service club for teenagers] of the Woodstock Rotary Club is jumping headfirst into 2016. They are hosting a visit by author Walter W. Reed to the Woodstock Opera House on Saturday, January 30. Reed grew up in a Bavarian village near Wurzburg. He personally experienced the Nazi persecution of Jews, including, at the age of 14, being arrested on Kristallnacht. Kristallnacht or The Night of Broken Glass was a massive, coordinated attack on Jews throughout the German Reich on the night of November 9, 1938. The violence continued into the next day. On November 9, mob violence broke out as the German police stood by and crowds of spectators watched. Nazi storm troopers, members of the SS, and Hitler Youth beat and murdered Jews, broke into and wrecked Jewish homes, and brutalized Jewish women and children. All over Germany, Austria, and other Nazi controlled areas, Jewish businesses had their windows smashed and contents destroyed. Synagogues were especially targeted for vandalism, including desecration of sacred Torah scrolls. Hundreds of synagogues were systematically burned while local fire departments stood by or simply prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings. About 25,000 Jewish men were rounded up and later sent to concentration camps where they were often brutalized by SS guards and in some cases randomly chosen to be beaten to death. On November 12, at a meeting of top Nazi officials. SS leader Reinhard Heydrich reported 7500 businesses destroyed, 267 synagogues burned (with 177 totally

destroyed) and 91 Jews killed. The reaction to Kristallnacht from other countries was shock and outrage. It created a storm of negative publicity in newspapers and among radio commentators which served to isolate Hitler’s Germany from the civilized nations and weaken any pro-Nazi sentiments in those countries. Reed’s book, “Children of La Hille”, describes his experiences following that horrifying night. Frightened parents were forces to find refuge for
Pace bus strikes pedestrian in Woodstock By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
WOODSTOCK — A seven year-old girl was struck by a Pace bus at the Woodstock Wal-Mart on Tues. Jan 12. The girl was struck shortly after 3 p.m. in the afternoon to the Wal-Mart Supercenter location at 1275 Lake Avenue in Woodstock. She was taken by ambulance to the Centegra Hospital in Woodstock. From there, she was taken by a Flight for Life air carrier to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. She was walking in the parking lot when the bus struck her. She did have a parent with her at the time this occurred. According to police reports, the bus was traveling south in an aisle of the Wal-Mart parking lot when it struck the girl. The driver, Lynne Keller of Huntley, was operating the bus for the McRide Dial-ARide service at the time of the accident. The bus was dropping off a patron at the Wal-Mart, and five passengers were on board at the time of the accident. The bus can transport up to 13 people at one time
in addition to the driver. The Dial-A-Ride program helps serve disabled and elderly people throughout the county who are unable to obtain or safely provide their own transportation. The particular bus in use at the time of the accident, operated by Keller, originated from McHenry’s First Transit, a Pace contractor. Keller has already submitted for drug and alcohol tests, however the results were unavailable as of Thurs. Jan 14. There is no expectation that Keller was under the influence, but such a test is part of standard procedure by the company. Keller was issued two tickets for the accident and has court at the end of February. Pending the findings of a full investigation, she has been suspended from operating a Pace service bus at this time. The girl, who was admitted as having sustained critical injuries, has since been released from the hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery. Her name has not been released.
their children, far from the escalating anti-Jewish violence. To that end, a courageous group of Belgian women organized a desperate and highly dangerous rescue mission to usher nearly 1000 children out of Germany and Austria. Of these children, 93 were placed on a freight train, traveling through the night away from their families and into the relative safety of Vichy France. Ranging in age from 5 to 16 years, the children and their protectors spent a harsh winter in an abandoned barn with little food. Eventually, they found shelter in the isolated Chateau de La Hille in southern France. Sending the youngest to the United States, the remaining children were still relentlessly hunted by Nazi soldiers. Finally smuggled into the Swiss Alps to safe houses, all but 11 of these 93 children survived. Reed’s book, ‘Children of La Hille’, relates a stunning first-hand account of this amazing rescue and the heroic efforts of those who helped them along the way. It describes heart-stopping near misses as the roundups intensify, forcing the children to hide in the woods to escape capture. It tells of scrambling to keep one step ahead of the Nazis, afternoon swims in a nearby pond and lively plays performed for local farmers. Walter E. Reed, originally named Werner Rindsberg, will present his book at the Woodstock Opera House on Saturday, January 30. His presentation will begin at 1:00 pm. Admission is free. The Interact Club does ask that attendees bring a non-perishable food item for the Woodstock Food Pantry and/or cash donations for Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign. Information on Kristallnacht can be found online at www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/timeline/ knacht.htm More about the Woodstock Rotary Club and Interact can be seen at www.rotarywoodstock.org.
Neighbors of Crystal Lake South bleachers looking for over $315,000 in restitution By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CRYSTAL LAKE — According to documents in relation to the Crystal Lake South bleacher law suit between neighboring property owners and District 155, the neighboring owners are looking for more than $315,000 in restitution for legal fees incurred with the suit. The total amount sought by said neighbors is $316,474.80. Those fees span just over two years of time. The lawsuit was filed in October 2013 and the fee request is for work through Nov. 9, 2015. The residents filed suit against the District because the bleachers were a nuisance and did not conform to numerous aspects of the zoning in the area. The bleachers impeded upon the perception of property values in the area as well. The fees involved spanned for over 24 months and accounted for six separate attorneys on behalf of the plaintiffs. The six attorneys on behalf the property owners charge a varying rate between $400 and $295, with additional fees ranging $125 to $175 per hour for some of the attorney’s paralegals. There were three paralegals working on the case. The District’s contention is not the reimbursement itself, but rather the rate
value being applied. They have also called some of the specific invoices and bills into question. Tom Burney, who was the lead attorney for the property owners, cited the grand total as being largely due to the length of time and appeals filed by the District’s defense team. The defense is looking for a more concrete comparison of this case to similar issues to back up the rates being charged. District 155 defense attorneys are seeking to reduce fees for attorneys to a flat $250 per hour and $80 per hour on the paralegal side, which is in line with what the District has been charged for their ongoing zoning process. They are proposing a massive reduction to just over $78,000 by reducing the fees and eliminating some of the bills altogether. According to the plaintiffs or property owners, the attorneys are being modest by not charging for travel time or mileage. Their response to District 155’s counter offer also cited that the amount of billable hours and proposed dollar amount were significantly less than those charged by District attorneys for the same exact case. A hearing over the financial amount in question will be held early the week of Jan. 18.

Facebook faux pas F
acebook is an online community and in being such has developed certain (often unwritten) rules that its users follow. While some rules are easy to understand and abide by, certain Facey situations leave me unsure of what Face-behavior protocol is called for in response to my scrolling. Posting photos is a FB mainstay. But what do you do when a person posts a photo that is clearly sideways or, worse yet, upside-down? The inverted problem is multiplied 1080 if the post is a video. The person posting must be aware their image is not aligned with the rest of the world – unless they are standing on their head, which I suppose is a possibility. If a sideways-posted photo looks particularly interesting, I pull it to my desktop and rotate it myself so it is in its full upright (normal) position. But, even if I like the photo, I don’t hit the like button because that would be like promoting bad behavior. Here’s the thing: rotating a photo on Facebook is not only feasible, it’s as easy as press-

ing, well, the rotate button. It’s as simple as that. Sigh. Next in popularity to photo postings are birthday greetings. Each day Facebook tells us who among our friends is experiencing a 24-hour b-day celebration. As a FB friend or acquaintance it is our duty to come up with a unique and heartfelt birthday wish for each of our 537 friends. Some days this means coming up with more than one unique and heartfelt message because no two birthday greetings should ever be the same. When I’m having a noncreative unbirthday-wishing sort of day, I beat myself up for the blasé and boring greeting of, “Happy birthday, insert name here.” Surely the person notes my lack of sincerity and enthusiasm. On those days, I am a birthday greeting failure
and do a headstand and look at myself upside-down in the mirror with shame. Another birthday conundrum occurs when it is your big day. You receive dozens or perhaps hundreds of birthday hellos, wishes, hallelujahs and other assorted salutations. What to do? Do you thank each greeter personally by responding to their message with a message of your own? If you choose this route, you are saddled to your Facey account for a hefty portion of the day, and that doesn’t feel like a happy birthday in my world. Instead do you simply like each of the greetings individually, or do you take it one step further and wait until the day after your day and send one generic thank you message to the entire group of greeters? I don’t know the correct answer. I’m just posing the question because it’s weighed heavy on my mind for some time. Sharing the agony lessens it, somehow. Finally (you knew it was coming) let’s talk politics. Everyone else is. It’s okay to have opinions and it’s even okay to post about them
because I can scroll through rather quickly, or block repeat offenders if I choose. Trouble (for me) is that not every posting is factual. There are numerous “news” websites that post satire. Satire is not the truth. It uses exaggeration, irony and sarcasm to create humor. There wouldn’t be a problem with this, if people understood that not everything on the Internet is true (it’s not?) nor is it meant to be. But, many good and trusting FB souls don’t know that – or choose to look past that – and post and repost and like and comment on satire as though it were the truth. And I cringe a little bit again and wonder why I’m even scrolling – again. And then I am embarrassed – again. But this time for myself and the things I choose do and the time I waste scrolling and wondering if the plural of faux pas shouldn’t be faux pases. But it isn’t. Trust me. I looked it up on the Internet. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Don’t miss a slice; follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.
Tips for goal setting and new habits in the new year
H
ow’s the new year going for you? Looking ahead with excitement? Let this be the year you see with new eyes and a revived attitude. Make every day a clean slate as you let go of old habits and embrace the new. Easier said than done, I know. Here are some tips to make it easier. Be nice to yourself. There is a lot of mental exercise involved when taking on a new habit and it applies to everything not just physical fitness. No chewing yourself out if you “mess up.” No more negative self-talk. Setting a goal is an occasion in itself. Achieving a goal is a process. Remember that. Be kind as if you were a baby learning to walk or a child with a new bike. Celebrate everything. If you went a day (an hour) without coffee/sweets/alcohol/ bread/being rude/whatever, give yourself an inner congratulation. Everything in life occurs in baby steps so acknowledge each step

along the way. If you made it to the gym, YAY YOU! If you didn’t, no berating. (See Step 1.) Think small. What I mean by this is to honor small benchmarks. Most of us are not cold turkey leapers. Imagine kicking caffeine or nicotine. Give yourself small goals. Tell yourself “I can go the next fifteen minutes without it.” Fifteen minutes is doable. Then see if you can go another fifteen. Repeat steps one and two above. Dream big. Big dreams happen by following the three steps above. Say you want to be a Grammywinning songwriter. Be kind to yourself every step of the way. Give yourself pep talks and post
encouragement on your fridge and mirror: YOU CAN DO THIS! Celebrate every line written. Celebrate every completed song. Celebrate every submitted song. Honor each step of the process. You can baby step your way to bliss. The big dream of winning awards as a songwriter happens one small seemingly insignificant step at a time. You may not ever win a Grammy, but your life will change when you put yourself out there for your dream. You will have a blast. Stay in gratitude. This is the undercurrent for every step above. Gratitude is the key that opens doors. Maybe your big dream is to change jobs. Follow the outline above. Be kind as you dutifully show up each day at your current job. Do the best you can and maintain a good attitude. Be grateful for what you have now. Imagine what you want the next job to FEEL like. Visualize that for five minutes every day. “I am respected for my contributions. I love my colleagues. This work is
creative and fulfilling. It uses my skills and I feel valued.” Whatever rings your bell. Do small things to ease in to a new career. Research. Write resumes. Network. Connect. Submit your applications. Celebrate each step you take. Be kind along the way and know it is all a learning process. Every interview is a stepping-stone. Stay in the energy of congratulations and celebration knowing that each step is taking where you want to go. That’s all life is, a series of steps. When we can relax and not be so hard on ourselves, it makes the present more enjoyable as we envision, and work towards, what it is we want next. Your todays will be more fun too. Six important steps to solving almost any problem By Pam Young Columnist
1. Face the problem in full light. 2. Asses what you can do to solve it. 3. Create a plan of action. 4. Do at least one action every day according to the plan. 5. Be patient and persistent. 6. Know you’re not alone. It’s never too late to change when you don’t like something in your life! But you have to be able to illuminate the cause of a problem and what part you’ve taken to create it in the first place. See your part in the problem, for as long as you blame someone else for it, you have no
control over the change. You can’t get anyone to do anything they don’t want to do. 1. Face it One divorced woman wrote that she’d been married for 25 years and her husband had cheated on her more than once during the marriage and had ultimately left her for another woman. She said she hardly recognized her home or herself and she blamed him. Then, she realized in spite of a cheating husband she’d successfully raised two happy children and she needed to stop worrying about what her husband did and focus on what she was going to do. She figured he probably felt he’d had a good excuse for the
affairs because she’d gained a bunch of weight and was not attractive. She hadn’t had the energy or desire to be intimate with him because of her unhealthy body, the house had gotten out of control and she was a fulltime homemaker and felt guilty for her shortcomings. It occurred to her if she were to get her act together; she’d get her life back, her body back and her home back. She didn’t mention anything about wanting to get her ex back. It took her a little over a year to reach her goal and she was looking forward to flaunting her new self (in a size eight, mother-of-the-bride suit) at their daughter’s wedding.
2. Do what you can do Deciding what you can do, especially when someone is unfaithful, isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary if you want your power back. I remember going to my minister when my husband was caught having an affair (I had three little kids and they came to the session with me because I couldn’t get a babysitter) and he told me that my job was to be the best me I could be, not for my husband but for me. Back then I was frumpy, suspicious, and overweight and kept a totally cluttered and dirty home. I knew what

Franks criticizes Madigan: cancelled session days dray out budget crisis, show need for special session
WOODSTOCK— State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, issued the following statement Monday, expressing disappointment in the decision of Speaker Madigan to cancel session this week and intensifying his call on Gov. Rauner to call legislators to Springfield to work around the clock to address the state’s budget crisis: “The cancellation of two legislative days during which legislators and the governor should be working to resolve the budget crisis exacerbates an untenable situation that is already costing taxpayers dearly. I vehemently disagree with Speaker Madigan’s decision and demand that the Illinois Legislature be called back immediately to emergency session.” “Every day the state does not produce a balanced budget, taxpayers are responsible for $33 million in new debt, our tax dollars are managed by a piecemeal series of court orders and critical state services are jeopardized. Every day, I hear from middle-class families, senior citizens, and those in great need about how this impasse is hurting them. We need a resolution to this crisis and we need it now. Regrettably, the same sense of urgency is not reflected in the actions of our legislative leaders or the governor.” “The decision by the Speaker to cancel session this week demonstrates the need for the governor to call all 177 members back into a special session, and require around-the-clock negotiation until this crisis is resolved. Every day the Legislature and the governor aren’t working to solve the budget impasse, the crisis grows more difficult to solve and the state goes deeper into debt. Like me, I believe that many members are ready to lock the doors, get to work, and pass a balanced budget. But it’s clear that the only way this is going to happen is if the governor heeds my call for an immediate special session.”

energy tenfold, whether you’re robbing a bank or getting organized. 3. Create a plan When I discovered that I could baby step my way to being organized, I let go of the vision of a mountain to climb. In Sidetracked Home Executives: from pigpen to paradise we said, “You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time!” Not that we were into eating elephants, we just initially saw our “problem” as something so much bigger than we were. 4. Break it down When you break any problem down into manageable bites you can do anything! (I walk five miles every day and when I figured out in a year I walk 1,825 miles, I couldn’t
believe it! That’s almost half way across our country.) 5. Be patient and persistent Keep the vision of what you want in your mind as much as you can. One of my visions was surely from Nelly (my inner child). I wanted revenge. I wanted my ex to see what he lost and be sorry. Oh dear, I hadn’t quite learned that vengeance isn’t mine and anyway, the best revenge is having a happy successful life! We don’t need to spend a single moment of our precious minds thinking about what somebody else thinks, even if he or she did hurt us. “What goes around, comes around,” is good enough for me. 6. Know you’re not alone
In The Course in Miracles it says, “If you only knew who was with you on the path you’ve chosen, you would never be afraid.” Spend time feeling the presence of your guardian angels, the spirits of your ancestors and the Holy Spirit. You are NOT alone whether you know it or not. Now start changing something you know you can change. For more from Pam Young go to www.cluborganized.com. You’ll find many musings, videos of Pam in the kitchen preparing delicious meals, videos on how to get organized, lose weight and get your finances in order, all from a reformed SLOB’s point of view.

Continued from page 4 I needed to do. I knew disorganization affected every aspect of my life; my health, relationships, finances, appearance, recreation, hospitality etc. but I got temporarily stuck in selfpity and the resultant poor habits and routines. Getting help is essential, and most of us aren’t very good at asking for help, but we need to get over that. It was only when I shared my problems with my sister that the two of us came up with a plan. Where two or more are gathered you increase the
