A fundraiser that really cleans up By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

CRYSTAL LAKE — The Friends of the Crystal Lake Library [FCLL] are raising money for the Summer Reading Program and a variety of other programs and activities. This fundraiser is continuing through January 31 and they can use your help. The FCLL have teamed up with Savers Thrift Store in Crystal Lake. When you donate items to Savers, and you mark them ‘FCLL’, Savers will give credit for the items to the Friends of the Crystal Lake Library. So, since January is the perfect time to clear away last year’s accumulation of stuff to make room for fresh experiences in the new year, now is the time for your old stuff to gain a new life and help out the library at the same time. Now is the time to clear out your garage so the car can fit back in, clean out your storage areas and donate everything for

the FCLL. It will feel wonderful to not only have gotten rid of excess ‘junk’ but it also feels great to have done something to help out the library and the community. The Crystal Lake circulating library was founded in November, 1913 in the home of Mrs. H. A. Dodge. “In 1914, the library moved from the Dodge home to a room in the local high school building. It was incorporated in 1926, and a board of eleven members was selected to control and manage the affairs of the library. By the 1930s, the number of books had grown so much that the collection was moved from the high school building to its heating plant. In 1937, the American Legion planned to build a combined library and legion headquarters. These plans fell through, but the Legion generously donated the land to the library. The library became a taxsupported agency in 1942. The

first paid librarian was hired; she was paid the princely sum of $60 a month. In 1952, a new library building, separate from the high school, was finally completed at the current location of 126 Paddock St. The library was expanded in 1958, when meeting rooms in the lower level were converted into a children’s library. In 1999 the Crystal Lake Public Library was ranked #10 among public libraries. The September issue of American Libraries included the article “Great American Public Libraries: HAPLR Ratings, Round Two,” by Thomas J. Hennen, Jr. The Crystal Lake Public Library was ranked #10 among public libraries serving communities of 25,000-49,999 across the United States. The HAPLR Index includes 15 factors. The focus is on circulation, staffing, materials, reference service and funding levels.“ The library is

Missing Woodstock teen victim of gunshot wound in Phoenix, Arizona

WOODSTOCK — On Thursday, Jan. 14, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office took a missing juvenile report from a residence in unincorporated Woodstock. The parents of a missing female reported that their daughter left the residence sometime during the overnight hours of Wednesday, Jan. 13, into Thurday, Jan. 14. Through the course of the investigation, members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division were led to believe that the juvenile was heading west to an address in Phoenix, AZ. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was contacted to assist with disseminating information. Detectives made contact with law enforcement agencies between here and Arizona, including the Phoenix Police Department. Detectives also requested a check to be conducted at a residence within the latter’s jurisdiction. The Phoenix Police Department advised that they had gone to the residence and learned that the missing juvenile had arrived at the residence with an adult male. It was later learned that the missing girl had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was in life-threatening condition and the adult male had been declared deceased at the scene. Phoenix Police Department identified the male as Alex O’Neill, 25 years old, of Woodstock, Illinois. O’Neill is a family friend of the missing juvenile. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to work with the Phoenix Police Department with their ongoing investigation.

ALGONQUIN — At the Village Board meeting on Tues. Jan. 19, Algonquin voted to end the village’s red light program indefinitely. The vote was unanimously in favor of the removal of the cameras. All cameras will be inactive and removed by April 30. The cameras were original put in place in 2008. During their first full year of operation, nearly 7,000 citations were issued due to red light cameras. That number fell nearly 75% over the course of their use. In 2015, the amount of tickets issued was just 1,766. Due to the significant loss of useful-

tion in the number of motor vehicle accidents at all intersections. Since the decrease has been steady, the need for the cameras has declined. Contrary to popular belief, the tickets were not automatically issued with the use of the cameras. Each time the cameras would photograph a car, an officer or officers from the Algonquin Police Department were required to review the footage to determine whether a ticket was warranted. That required man hours in the station instead of on the streets. Eliminating the camera use will allow those officers to be more active and responsive in the field instead of behind a desk.

Progress on resolution in District 155 Bleacher dilemma

State’s Attorney’s Office welcomes Sarah P. Dzurik to their Civil Division MCHENRY COUNTY — Louis A. Bianchi, McHenry County State’s Attorney, is pleased to announce that Sarah Dzurik has joined the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Civil Division effective January 11, 2016. Ms. Dzurik received her Juris Doctor from the Duke University School of Law, Durham, North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana. While in law school, Sarah received the honor of Duke Law

ness, the board has opted to remove the cameras altogether. There were originally cameras at four different intersections. One of those intersections had already been eliminated due to prior construction. The remaining intersections, at Randall and Algonquin, Randall and Huntington, and Randall and Bunker Hill, will be eliminated by the April 30 date chosen by the board. The cameras ultimately served their purpose, which was to make drivers more attentive and cautious at high-traffic intersections in the area. The cameras also increased village revenue. Since the cameras were installed, data has shown a dramatic and continued reduc-

rows and 80 plus feet in length to that structure. They proposal also leaves the nine rows of West bleachers intact, having been reduced from nearly 30 rows that were put up in 2013. Reducing the height of the west end alleviates a lot of the grievance from neighboring properties as they were considered a large eyesore and deterrent to improvement in property values. The nod of approval from the planning and zoning committee does not guarantee the plan is finalized. Crystal Lake City Council must still approve the proposal and give their final say in order for District 155 to move forward. There are other caveats in place including requests from the neighbors to improve landscaping and install a privacy fence to keep guests

from entering their properties during games. Details regarding parking are still a major concern as well. The City Council could ultimately approve portions of the proposal but require changes to certain aspects in order for the plan to progress as well. The vote from planning and zoning was not unanimous as many still voiced concerns for aspects of the requested variances, and there were still a lot of uncertainties for neighbors as well. The district will still have to meet certain expectations in consideration of the neighborhood to be allowed to keep the existing structure, which cost well over a million dollars to construct. A date when City Council will vote on the current proposal is yet to be determined.

Louis A. Bianchi, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that in cooperation with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and the DEA, the property located at 9672 Bennington Drive, Huntley, IL. was determined to be subject to forfeiture under the provisions of the Controlled Substances Act or the Cannabis Control Act. The property had an estimated value of $209,118.00. An additional property located at 10123 Ashley Street, Huntley, IL., was

ture and had an estimated total value of $46,233.00. Under the forfeiture laws, prosecutors file civil actions in court seeking an order to forfeit property seized related to drug crimes. The forfeited assets are sold and the forfeited money is distributed, according to State law, among State law enforcement agencies. In this case, $33,481.94 was distributed to the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office as their share of the forfeited proceeds. The for-

drug asset forfeiture account, and pursuant to law, is used for substance abuse treatment and educational programs, and for detecting, investigating, apprehending and prosecuting people for drug crimes. During the 2015 Multi-Juris Drug Grant year, over one million dollars have been recovered in drug asset forfeitures. These cases were prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Randi Freese of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

However, he is now taking on a new kind of farming that is quite unique to this area. Dummer has been raising bison since 2002. After a friend started buying bison calves out of the Dakotas for cutting horse practice, Dummer had the opportunity to buy seven calves in 2002 once they were retired from cutting horse practice. “We started with just a few and now the herd is up to 45,” Dummer said. The Dummers currently sell live animals to local customers for meat. But, are hoping to commercialize their business soon and be able to sell their own bison meat after they have established a USDA Label. They are now in the process of putting up a new facility that will make handling the bison easier and stress free for the animal and the farmer. When asked about his interest in the animal, Dummer replied with two answers: the history and the health benefits. According to Dummer, bison meat is leaner when compared to other meats. “We have really noticed a difference now that bison is what we eat. Bison meat has a clean greaseless taste,” Dummer said. He also said that since he was a kid, he has been fascinated with American history especially of the west and likes that a little piece of history is right there in his backyard. “We are members of the National Bison Association and attend the annual winter and summer conferences. We belong to the Montana Bison Association so we get to go to these events and learn more about the bison,” Dummer said. Their connections to these associations have given the Dummers the opportunity to meet Ted Turner, founder of CNN, who operates the largest bison ranch in North America as well as visit David Letter-

man’s ranch, another celebrity rancher. According to Dummer, one saying in the bison industry is: “You can make a bison go anywhere he wants to go.” It is important to remember that these bison are still wild animals and the Dummers make efforts on their farm to treat the bison like they are still wild and provide for them a habitat that is much like their natural environment. Dummer also said that the bison industry is growing substantially in the U.S. because of the health benefits. “Quite a few years ago, the bison was almost extinct,” Dummer said. “At one point, there were 60 million bison in North America, but in the late 1800s there were between 100 and 500 bison. They were nearly gone. But, the increased interest and health benefits and the uniqueness of the animal have grown the demand back up.” The bison are extremely selfsufficient animals. “I check on them every day and make sure they have food and water,” Dummer said.
