Enjoy the Fall Fun Festival – Cowboy Style By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
D
ays are getting shorter and we are at the beginning of autumn with its cooler weather. But before we snuggle up in the house for winter, there is still a lot of seasonal activities we can be enjoying. One popular place to visit at this time of year is Donley’s Wild West Town in Union for their Fall Fun Festival. The grounds are freshly decorated with shocks of corn and photo opportunities that are set up exclusively for this event. Bales of hay are set out for decoration, for sitting on and for kids to clamber over. The cowboy shows still entertain us at 12:00, 2:00 and 4:30, however, one of the shows is a special Halloween presentation with cowboy zombies or other such monsters. Pumpkins rule as decorations everywhere. Pumpkin painting tables are frequently visited as children under 12 vie for the prize – a return pass for next year. The top three eligible pumpkins, as chosen by select judges, will win this coveted prize each day. The judging is at the end of the day so winners will be notified by mail. You can try your skill at archery, lassos, slingshots, popguns and, for the adults, tomahawk throwing. You can enjoy the Kiddie Pedal Cars, Carousel and Canoes. You can thrill to the Runaway Mine Cars roller coaster and Pony Rides. The ¾ scale model C. P. Huntington train offers two different experiences during the Fall Fun Festival. At some times, the train will travel down to the Pumpkin Patch where you can trade the beads you received when you entered the Wild West Town for a pumpkin that you can take home with you. At other scheduled times, the train will roll through the
Spooky Tunnel with its special effects, skeletons, spider webs and whatever other spooky things find their way into the gloom of the cavern. Face Painting and karaoke are always popular choices. The Ice Cream Parlor and Fudge Shop can satisfy your munchies and the Grill-on-thePorch can serve you hamburgers and other yum stuff. Souvenirs are easily found in the toy store and gift shops. You can also dress up in Western or Victorian outfits and have your photo taken as a remembrance of your exciting day. If you choose, you can have a friend or loved one arrested and thrown into a real strapiron jail cell. The jailbird will be able to carry away a souvenir ‘Wanted’ poster to commemorate the event. Kids of all ages absolutely adore the Wild West Town’s Gold Mine. Panning for gold, even gold pyrite or Fool’s Gold, is very nearly addictive. Gold fever can strike without warning and everyone wants to try to fill their gold bag. The Fall Fun Festival is an annual favorite and families return year after year to enjoy the seasonal event. You might even spot a celebrity or two mingling with the visitors. If the weather cooperates and you watch the skies, you might even spot a double rainbow … maybe even a triple rainbow. Donley’s Wild West Town is designed for families with children under 12. It has plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained throughout the day. It is open on weekends from 10 am til 6 pm during the Fall Fun Festival. The festival runs from September 26 – October 25. Donley’s Wild West Town is located at 8512 South Union Road, Union, Illinois, 60180. Village of Cary considering a Starbucks location By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CARY — As other area locations prepare to implement more menu into their Starbucks location, the Village of Cary is strongly considering adding a Starbucks location to its so-called ‘curb appeal’. One of the only areas in McHenry without a Starbucks already in place, the Village’s Zoning/Planning and Appeals Board is taking vote on adding the coffee shop in town. The proposed location would be a standalone building at the corner of Feinberg Drive at Route 14. The building would take over space in an existing park-
ing lot. Nearby businesses include Taco Bell, Jewel, and competitor Dunkin Donuts. The initial vote took place at the board’s meeting on Thurs. Sept 24. If approval is received from that board, the Village Board itself will vote yes or no to final approval on the project on Oct. 6. At this time there have been no proposals to add the company’s “evening menu” in the Cary location should it come to fruition. There are currently Starbucks locations in Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, and Crystal Lake working on implementing that menu. Cary, along with Wonder Lake, Marengo,
and Harvard, are within the handful of area cities/towns without a Starbucks to date. A local to Cary location has been a resident request for quite some time. The request, put forth by the developer, GW Properties LLC, has been a long time in the making. The location is heavily trafficked and sees huge numbers of work commute drivers on a daily basis. One consideration that may come into play is Feinberg’s direct access to Route 14 is limited to outbound traffic Westbound only. Those headed Eastbound on Route 14 would have to drive in and out utilizing the main entrance to Cary Square Shopping
Center. Cary Square Shopping Center and the immediate surrounding area on Route 14 between Three Oaks and CaryAlgonquin Roads are anchored by several large chain restaurants. In addition to Taco Bell and Dunkin’ Donuts, there is a McDonalds, Domino’s Pizza, and Wendy’s all within that small stretch. Whether or not the additional of a Starbucks in the same small space would have an adverse effect on business for those storefronts is undetermined. If the Village of Cary approves the request, the store could open for business next year.

Illinois Supreme Court orders District 155 to comply with Crystal Lake zoning laws By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CRYSTAL LAKE — A case that began over two years ago has finally reached an end as the Illinois Supreme Court ruled against District 155, in favor of the neighboring property owners and the City of Crystal Lake regarding bleachers at Crystal Lake South High School. When the case and construction of said bleachers began in August 2013, the lengths it would take for this case to be resolved were unforeseen. District 155 had never filed for variances
or made any requests to the city during the construction process. Their first variance request was made in December 2014 and subsequently denied. The height of the bleachers, the distance from neighboring property, and several other factors played into why certain residents decided to file suit. In October of 2014, McHenry County Judge Michael Chimel ruled in favor of the city, stating the bleachers must be torn down and for every day they remained up after deadline, the District would be fined. How much of the accrued fines will
be assessed is to be determined, but the year to date accumulation based on numbers provided last October is catastrophic. Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke who presided over the latest case indicated the school is subject to all zoning regulations put forth by the city in which is operates. The Illinois Supreme Court heard verbal arguments in this case in May of 2015. The court decision will affect all future projects for schools across the state effective in 30 to 35 days. The school’s board will be hearing demolition contract
proposals during the upcoming week to remove the structure and eliminate the violations. Ultimately, the costs and penalties associated with this case fall in the hands of the taxpayers. How much this will affect those dollar amounts is to be determined. Demolition is not set to impact large upcoming events outside of school sports. How quickly the demolition will take place will be determined by what is approved and what is called into question by the board. District 155 is now faced with the challenge of what
move will take place next. The bleacher structure could be moved across the field if they proposed it to the Zoning Board in the proper fashion. The move will ultimately require some other redesign elements as well. In the past, District officials have cited that to be a challenge because it involves a transformer, the concession stands and more. Regardless of what route District 155 chooses to take, they will be required to follow the same standards as other property owners within Crystal Lake from this point forward.
Picnic With Horses By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
S
aturday morning dawned cool and breezy but that did not seem to affect Fleur. Fleur is the lovely horse that greets me at the gate as I arrive for the Hooved Animal Humane Society’s Annual Picnic & Horse Show on September 19. Fleur has the distinction of having one brown eye and one pale blue eye. Very friendly, Fleur walked with me, stopping when I stopped and moving when I moved. Gigi Iacovelli, Fleur’s rider, decided that Fleur liked me and wanted to be my friend. Iacovelli hops on the train in Chicago to come out to Woodstock to work with the horses of HAHS. She tells me that Fleur is 7 years old and is ready to be adopted into a loving family. Fleur has been at HAHS for 6 years. Today’s picnic is a fundraiser to help neglected and abused hooved animals. The picnic features a horse, pig and goat show and a performance by the Midwest Renegades Dirt Devils Drill Team with their horses and riders. There will also be adoptable horse demonstrations, children’s games and bounce houses, wagon rides, farm tours and more. The entrance fee of $5.00 at the gate, silent auction and raffles proceeds, as well as the profits from the lunch menu items, will go to assist abused and neglected hooved animals such as horses, donkeys, goats, sheep and potbellied pigs. The HAHS Tack Shop is also open with items for the rider as well as tack for the animals. HAHS is a non-profit organization that rescues hooved animals; brings them back to health, if necessary; and adopts them into permanent, loving homes.
“HAHS is the oldest and best-equipped horse rescue. Our history includes efforts that produced the best laws in the country for our equine friends. Our mission is educational. This year we are providing a First Responder Class to educate people on how to help horses in a disaster,” the HAHS brochure reads. “We provide clinics year round… to improve your horse’s care and performance.” The Hooved Animal Humane Society impounded a herd of 17 horses from southern Illinois not long ago. Seven of the mares gave birth less than a month later. Each year, they send qualified horse people to test for the State Approved Humane Investigator Exam. These people respond to complaints that, by law, must be addressed. The U.S. Army, 719th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services has been helping HAHS since 2011. They come out on a quarterly basis to provide general health maintenance of the animals. “Using HAHS as a training ground, experienced Army large animal veterinarians instruct new large animal and small animal veterinarians in proper large animal care, at no cost to HAHS. HAHS provides the vaccines and the medicines.” This service saves HAHS $4500 per year in vet bills. You can become a member of HAHS, volunteer at the Farm or Adopt-a-Hoof by sponsoring the provision and training of one of photos by Anne Eickstadt Fleur with Gigi Iacovelli greets us at the gate for the Hooved the animals in HAHS’s care. Contributions to this non-profit organization will enable HAHS Animal Humane Society’s Picnic. to continue to rescue and provide veterinary care for our hooved animal friends. The Hooved Animal Humane Society is located at 10804 McConnell Road, Woodstock, Illinois 60098. They can be found online at www.hahs.org or on their Facebook page Hooved Animals.

Riding Clubs, Riding Trails and Contests By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

orse lovers will be happy to know that McHenry County’s first new riding trail in 25 years has been opened in Brookdale. This endeavor is the result of the alliance of several horse clubs. The McHenry County Horse Club, the Bull Valley Riding Club, the McHenry County Saddle Club, the Spring Grove Horse Show, Inc., and the Riding Club of Barrington Hills. The Brookdale site opened on June 4, 2015, and a temporary horse trailer parking area has been opened up. The Equestrian Collation of McHenry County is continuing to raise money to improve the site with a permanent Horse Trailer
Parking Area. They have already raised $22,000 of the $40,000 that will be used as matching funds for the Federal Government’s RTP Grant program. The McHenry County Conservation District made an application for such a grant in April. To assist with this fund-raising effort, the McHenry County Horse Club (MCHC) is taking part in the ‘Time to Ride Challenge’. Hosted by the American Horse Council, cash prizes are being awarded. MCHC has registered in the MEDIUM Division with the goal of winning the $10,000 first prize. “The $10,000 will be donated to the McHenry County Conservation District,” Judy Scacci tells me. Vern Scacci, Judy’s husband is the President of MCHC. The ‘Time to Ride Challenge’
is in its 2nd year of competition. “All we have to do, is each of us host a 3 minute event attended by non-horse participants, i.e. people who do not own horses. Participants can be family, friends, neighbors or any nonhorse person you know. It is easy to do, you could have your horse at a boarding barn or at home to participate in this event.” To prove their participation, each non-horse person is asked to sign a petition. MCHC brought this event to the Hooved Animal Humane Society’s Picnic and Horse Show. It took Judy about 3 minutes to explain to me why my signature is helpful. This is the one time that ‘stuffing’ the ballot box is legal. If one attends more than one event, your signature is valid for each event. 10 events =
