28th ANNUAL
Family-Friendly Fall Hot Spots By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
Halloween may be known for its chills and thrills and have plenty of events designed to frighten, but there is plenty to do in McHenry County for the younger and/or more sensitive members of families as well. Here is a partial list of family friendly October activities. Fall Fun Festival at Donley’s Wild West Town with rides and cowboy/ western fun, shows and games. A pumpkin patch with an Indian chief and a spooky (not scary) train ride scheduled at specific times. www. wildwesttown.com 8512 South Union Road, Union, IL. Richardson Adventure Farm with a large corn maze, zip line, rides and activities for the whole family. www.richardsonadventurefarm.com 909 English Prairie Road, Spring Grove, IL 60081. Stade’s Farm & Market is a working farm and includes a petting zoo, pumpkin patch, farm market and kid’s activities and play area. www.stadesfarmandmarket.com 3709 Miller Road, Mchenry, Illinois 60051. McHenry County’s apple orchards and pumpkin patches also provide fall fun for the entire family. I will include a Yelp review, if possible. All Season Farm Nursery www. allseasonorchard.com 14510 IL Route 176, Woodstock, IL 60098. REVIEW: All seasons is filled with so many activities that we couldn’t do it all. The zip lining and pig races were our favorite, of course after picking apples which is always a blast for the kids! I would definite-
ly recommend it for families with young children! – Anita H. Cody’s Farm & Orchard provides apples and vegetables as well as a corn maze. www.codysfarm.com 19502 River Road, Marengo, IL 60152. Annual Pumpkin Festival – every weekend in October 10-6 pm. Four acre corn maze, apples, pumpkins, hayrides, kids games, food. Homestead Orchard www.homesteadorchard.net 11802 Charles Road, Woodstock, IL 60098. REVIEW: If you are looking for a true apple picking experience, this is the place for you. I have been to other orchards that are much larger and so are the crowds. I was looking for a smaller orchard where it’s focus was on apple picking, not petting zoos and corn mazes. The owners greet you when you walk up, they are very friendly and extremely helpful. They informed us about the apples that were available for picking and where they were located. They later checked on us to make sure we were finding the apples we wanted which was very nice. – Kristin T. Lang’s Apple Orchard www.langsorchard.com 17411 Secor Road, Woodstock, IL 60098 REVIEW: A cute, family-owned apple orchard without the corniness of wagon rides, corn mazes or goat bridges. No admission fee, great apple selection, and a barn with nice ladies and a variety of jams, apple butter and salsas. There weren’t any apple cider donuts or apple cider, but we didn’t mind. This is a wonderful place for apple-picking purists

Don & Chris Schellhaass began their vineyard as a retirement project.
“There is a revolution of grape growing and wine making in Illinois. Ten years ago, seven or eight wineries dotted the state and maybe 100 acres were devoted to grapes. Today, those numbers have ballooned to about 80 wineries and more than 2000 acres of vines. Those who are involved in wine making here like to think that Illinois is where California was in the 1970s – producing great wines that have only to be recognized,” says the Northern Illinois Wine Growers Association website. On Tuesday, September 22, nearly 4000 pounds of grapes were harvested at RowSchell Ridge Vineyard outside of Marengo. “We started in 2007. It was kind of a retirement project,” Chris Schellhaass tells me. “We started with 12 rows. We have 22 rows now. We have a little over 5 acres of grapes. The only people we sell to are wineries and that is by word of mouth. We grow five kinds of grapes: three reds and two
whites.” Don and Chris Schellhaass grow more than 1000 vines of grapes. They grow Marquette, St. Pepin, Frontenac, Marchal Foch and Concord grapes. “I start checking the grapes [for sugar content] and send the information to the buyer. The buyer tells us when to pick the grapes,” Don Schellhaass says. The buyer knows what is needed in the grapes in order to produce the proper taste in the wines to be made. “If you own a winery, it’s not what you like – it’s what the customers like. The guy that bought all our grapes this year is up in Lake Geneva: The Studio Winery.” “The winery called and asked how many pounds of grapes I would be sending,” Don continues. “I said, ‘4000 pounds.’ We harvested 3989 pounds of that variety.” The winery needs to know how many grapes are being sent to allocate space and equipment. Too much and they cannot handle it, too little and they

We’ve tried a few places along the way, all in the outskirts of the suburbs, but Prairie Sky Orchard is BY FAR our favorite. What separates Prairie Sky is its lack of gimmicks. Woodstock, IL 60098 REVIEW: Exactly what I want in an apple orchard... simply picturesque! Just slightly off the beaten path, down the road from what looked to be complete chaos at All Seasons Orchard, it is totally worth a visit! Website was updated with available varieties and you can pick raspberries too. Employees were very knowledgeable and friendly plus they have complimentary apples available to taste so you know what you’d like to pick. It was just a short, but beautiful, walk out to the trees and raspberries bushes. While there were others picking as well, it wasn’t crowded or chaotic at all and we were there on a gorgeous afternoon. Apples are delicious... I’ll for sure be back next year! - Melissa W.

Rusty Gold Auction meets expectations By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
It may be cool and breezy on Friday and Saturday, October 2 and 3, but the weather is cooperating beautifully with the Rusty Gold Auction. The auction is being run by Donley Auction Services of Union, Illinois, in cooperation with Kraft Auction Service of Valparaiso, Indiana. Expecting a new shipment of vehicles to come in, the Lazarus family of Collector Cars, Ltd. is emptying an entire lot of vintage vehicles for their ‘No Reserve’ Rusty Gold Auction. They are clearing out storage spaces in remote warehouses and sweeping out corners filled with vintage advertising, gas pumps, scooters and coin-op arcade machines. Over 500 vehicles are being auctioned off this weekend. They range from barn finds to luxury limousines, worthy restoration projects to rare collector cars. “The biggest draw about this auction,” says Randy Donley of Donley Auction Services, “is that it is a rare opportunity to obtain cars that have never before been up for sale. The prices are right where they should be. Junk cars are bringing junk prices and good collector cars are bringing good money.” The variety of vehicles covers everything from a two-seater convertible to an ambulance, from a hearse to fire
trucks, and from scooters to gocarts. Held in a large lot behind Lessing’s Historic Auto Museum, 13825 Metric Rd., Roscoe, IL 61073, the Rusty Gold auction is well attended, drawing buyers from Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado and North Dakota to attend in person and more are bidding online. “Online bidding is doing very well. People from all over the country are bidding.” A 1960 Cadillac El Dorado Biarritz Convertible has sold for $31,000; a 1941 Packard Le Baron 180 Limousine for $26,000; a 1949 Cadillac Convertible has also sold for $26,000; a 1956 Cadillac 62 Series Coupe, 2-door is selling for $7500; a rare 1925 Flint touring car that is one of three known to exist is sold Photos by Anne Eickstadt for $9000. waste space. Either way, they lose money so an accurate estimate of grapes is important. “If someone is going to start a vineyard, start small because it is a lot of work – a lot of work by hand. The work increases as they [the vineyards] get bigger and grow and grow,” Don says. “You have to prune. You don’t want to overproduce. You want about 40 clusters to a vine. For a cluster, you need about 10-15 leaves. The biggest problem is the birds. We do have to net and enclose it completely.” In one recent instance, in a netted section of vines, “I don’t know how they get in. I have never seen a bird inside the net. We lost about 75% of that crop.” If you don’t know what kind of wine to order, “Go to a tasting room,” Chris advises. “You can find something you like. Whites have been really popular. 2012 is a really good year. It was very, very good. The
drought intensified flavor.” Don & Chris Schellhaas enjoy telling others about their vineyard and sharing their experiences in vine growing. Third Rabid bat found in McHenry County – Vaccinate your pets – protect them and yourself! There has been confirmation of a third rabid bat in McHenry County. According to Dr. Lisa Lembke, Veterinary Public Health Manager for the Health Department, there was no human exposure; however, two dogs were in contact with the bat. Because the dogs had received the rabies vaccine prior to exposure, they are quarantined at home. The Health Department reminds residents that vaccinating cats and dogs is their best protection against this deadly virus. McHenry County requires the rabies vaccine and reg-
istration for all dogs that are four months or older. Unvaccinated cats (even indoor cats) are susceptible if exposed to the rabies virus. Veterinarians can vaccinate dogs and cats as early as 12 weeks old. Remember that these shots do not last the lifetime of your pet. Revaccination is required every 1 to 3 years. The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid exposure. During the fall, many bats are migrating and others are looking for winter quarters, which may be in peoples’ attics. While bats have mainly beneficial effects, with some
species able to eat up to 600 insects in an hour, keeping bats out of your house is the best protection. Regularly inspect the exterior of your home for signs of small openings in the roof, siding or around doors and windows. Be sure your home is free of bats before sealing any holes. Consider contacting a professional. Find more information on bat exclusion at http:// web.extension.illinois.edu (search term bats). Bats sometimes get inside a house accidentally. If a bat finds its way into your house, it could spread rabies to
your cat or dog. If your pet is not current on its rabies shot and it plays with or bites a bat, euthanizing or quarantining your pet in an approved kennel for six months may be necessary. Signs of a rabid bat include a bat that is active by day, found in a place where bats are not usually seen (such as in your home or on the lawn) or is unable to fly. To learn more about rabies prevention, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/ or contact the MCDH Communicable Disease Program at 815-334-4500.
Health Department flu shots available – It isn’t too early to get your flu shot Have you had your flu shot? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seasonal flu activity typically occurs from October to May and being vaccinated is the first, most important step in protecting against this serious disease. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year, according to the CDC and it is recommended that people be vaccinated against the flu soon after vaccine becomes available, by October if possible. It takes about two weeks after vaccina-
tion for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu. The timing of flu is very unpredictable and the severity can vary from season to season. “While it may only be October, it is not too early to think about the flu or to get a flu shot,” says Pam Morzos Rn, Director of Nursing for the McHenry County Department of Health. For the convenience of residents, MCDH is holding several clinics between October 6 and October 26. The clinics, scheduled for various times at
various locations throughout the County, are available to adults and children 9 years and older. The cost of flu shots is $35; Medicaid and Medicare Part B are accepted. Tues. McHenry County Department of Health nurse receives award – acknowledged for quick response to XDR Tuberculosis case The McHenry County Department of Health has the honor of announcing that Karen Stephenson, RN, is the recipient of the 2015 Tuberculosis Service Award, presented in Springfield earlier this month by the Illinois Council on Tuberculosis at their annual conference. Awarded annually, this achievement is given to an individual exemplifying a noteworthy service achievement in the fight against Tuberculosis (TB). Karen received the award in recognition for quickly identifying a rare case of extremely drug resistant (XDR) TB in the County last spring. Along with other members of the Department’s Communicable Disease (CD) team, Karen worked swiftly to ensure proper patient care precautions were in place and that the Illinois Department
of Health and the Centers for Disease Control were immediately notified. According to Karen, “I was just doing my job; this is what I’ve been trained to do. We all pitched in” Susan Karras, Communicable Disease Coordinator for the Health Department and Karen’s supervisor, said, “Karen is a very experienced TB nurse and we’re lucky to have her. Karen and the CD staff were on top of what needed to be done every step of the way.” Tuberculosis is a reportable airborne bacterial disease, which, even though serious, is normally treatable with proper medication. Although contagious, TB is difficult to transmit and can only be spread when someone with an active case is coughing or sneezing. Symptoms of TB can mimic other illnesses and include weight loss; night
sweats; weakness and chronic coughing (which may or may not be tinged with blood). “In McHenry County we typically see several cases of TB each year. Although the number of cases in the United States is lower than in some other countries, the disease won’t be eradicated because of the mobile society in which we live,” said Michael Hill, Administrator for McHenry County Department of Health. McHenry County Department of Health conducts TB testing for county residents when it is necessary for their job or if an individual has been exposed to the disease. For more information about TB, call 815-334-4500 or visit the Nursing – Communicable Disease section of the Health Department website at www.mcdh.info.

Exploring architectural wonders on Frank Lloyd Wright day trip
I
first met Cindy several years ago when I hosted her for a weekend at the start of her exchange program. She ended up being placed with a host family outside of Chicago and went to college at a community college there for her one year in America. Since the locale turned out be relatively close, I hired Cindy to be my assistant one day a week doing organizational duties for me. Mainly we took day trips so I could show her the glorious Midwest. We are now forever friends and she comes back every year as she fell head over heels in love with Chicago. At the ripe age of 26, she has traveled extensively, some trips with friends or family, some solo. Her love of travel and love of learning make her a wonderful houseguest. Cindy knows more about Chicago than many natives. She knows more about a lot of things than many people, or at least me. This past weekend we offered availability to do anything and go anywhere with her. She has studied Frank Lloyd Wright

(and American architecture in general) so we traipsed up to Spring Green, Wis. to tour Taliesin, Frank’s home and studio. Taliesin (pronounced Tally – ESS – in) is on land where Frank grew up, on the Wisconsin River, set on the hillside with a view to make you sigh as if you’ve seen heaven on Earth. Taliesin is a Welsh word meaning “shining brow” and that is where he placed his dwelling, as if it is part of the jutting sandstone bluffs. The top of the hill, the crown, is not built upon. Frank liked his architecture to be organic, seeming part of the environment. He used local woods and stone, and kept his color scheme true to natural tones of the area. Even at his farm there, he had only certain chickens,
Sheriffs Office investigates motorcycle traffic crash A 47-year-old Island Lake man was hospitalized in stable condition Saturday night after being transported by ambulance from the scene of a one-vehicle crash in the 3300 block of Wright Road in unincorporated Prairie Grove. Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Harley Davidson, Todd M. Murray, 47, was operating a 1982 Harley Davidson and was traveling northbound on wright Road at 10:32 p.m. when for unknown reasons the motorcycle exited the
roadway and struck a culvert. Todd was transported to the Centegra Hospital McHenry by Nunda Rescue. An investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of the Nunda Fire Protection District, and the Prairie Grove Police Department also assisted at the scene. The driver was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to be a factor of the crash.

cows and pigs to match his color palette. We toured the 600-acre estate and the 21,000 square foot home (37,000 square feet if you include the courtyards) along with his school that still houses and teaches graduate level architecture students. Fascinating and inspiring, I still would never have commissioned Frank to build a home for me. His ceilings are too low. A fabulous day was spent in Wisconsin taking in Frank, the scenery, and cheese curds. I fancy architecture and am a bit of an information junkie, but not a devotee of any one thing or person. I appreciate people
like Cindy who are walking fact factories. Frank designed nearly 500 homes and buildings in his long career. He narrowed down a list of 38 that he really loved and only 21 of his creations boast a red tile with his initials signifying his stamp of approval. Imagine our delight the next day when we were able to show Cindy the Laurent House in our hometown of Rockford, Ill. and read that it made Frank’s list of his fave 38. And imagine our surprise when we discovered it has the signature red tile at the entry door. I may not be a wealth of deep information but I do love to provide a lovely experience for
guests and find things that light them up. My thanks to Frank and the Laurent House board for making a German gal (and this American gal) very happy. Lessons I learned include there is always something new to explore and appreciate, and there are always treasures under one’s nose that we may not discover until someone else comes along to stir our interest. To that, I give my own stamp of approval. Kelly Epperson Simmons has built houses of cards, sticks, and still loves dollhouses. Thank you for goldfish, I think
T
his is an open letter to the Carnival Guy who “awarded” my kid with a goldfish at the local fair this past summer. What can I say? Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it. Everyone knows that nurturing, feeding, and otherwise sustaining any and all household pets (including goldfish, salamanders, and tree frogs) is at the top of every mom’s job description. We live to de-poop the fish tank. But back to that fateful day. I innocently sent my kid to the carnival thinking maybe he’d come home with a bellyful of corn dogs or mini donuts. Instead he marched into the house with a clear plastic bag filled with water and a goldfish (not necessarily in that order). He was beaming – my son, not the fish. To say he likes critters is an understatement. Coming home with a goldfish? It was his lucky day! I wasn’t feeling the love. I’d sworn off fish as pets years ago, after three large tanks and many births, deaths and countless instances of parents eating their young. Fish can be complicated, barbaric beings. That said, our current situation seemed simple enough for fish aficionados like us. We could deal with just one tiny fish. How much could he eat and poop? Problem was, our situation was about to multiply. My kid is a critter magnet, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I’m a bit of a

sucker for them myself. It seems other moms don’t share my weakness. A few of my son’s friends also won fish at the carnival but they knew better than to take them home. Before long, a second carnival “prize” showed up at our doorstep. And then another. And another. Apparently other moms have mastered the word, “No,” better than me. That is how we went from zero goldfish to four in less than an hour. I’ve seen fish multiply before, but never like this. We looked for a larger bowl. We put in some rocks and de-chlorinated water. We tried to make the tank homey for our new pets. It took some effort, but we got the four musketeers settled in their new habitat and I remained optimistic that our fish situation was a temporary one. I figured they’d be belly up and ready for the flusher in short order. How healthy could four carnival goldfishes be? In a word: Very. Apparently carnival life is a great start for goldfish. One might think they would be squished together in large numbers in small tanks all swishing and swashing as the car-
nival travels from one town to another. Our goldfish flourish with swishing and swashing. They’ve completed the twoplus hour car trip with us to the lake three times now and we haven’t drowned a single one. It’s been a couple of months, and our fish are thriving. I feed them twice a day. When I do, they congregate at the top of the water in anticipation of their goldfish flakes. I don’t want to brag, but as goldfish go, I think they are at the top of the intelligence meter. They have voracious appetites and are growing bigger. In short, they show no sign of going belly up anytime soon. We’ve even committed the universal gesture of permanent pethood. We’ve named them: Big Goldy, Little Goldy, Brownie, and Spot. I guess our quadruplets are here to stay. So that is why I’m writing today. It is because of you, Carnival Guy, that we are in our current situation. We owe our good fortune to you (as do Goldy et al.) and for that I send a weary, albeit wet, “Thanks.” The fish have sort of grown on us and I guess we’ll keep them. As for next year and your carnival, we may have to take a pass. I think my kid will be busy that day – changing the water in the fish tank. Meijer partners with Pink Ribbon Produce for Campaign’s 10th anniversary STATELINE — Celebrating 10 years in the fight against breast cancer, Pink Ribbon Produce is returning to Meijer stores during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month of October, Meijer and various participating produce suppliers are encouraging shoppers to lower their risk of cancer through healthy eating and engaging in an active lifestyle. The involvement of Meijer and the campaign’s other two grocery partners – Harris Teeter and Price Chopper – directly supports the research and prevention efforts of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Meijer has been a dedicated partner of Pink Ribbon Produce since 2007, helping to raise awareness and share important tips about prevention. Through in-store displays and social media outreach, Meijer encourages its customers to make purchasing decision that benefit both themselves and NBCF. The American Cancer Society recommends eating 12 cups of fruits and vegetables every day to lower the risk of cancer. Pink Ribbon Produce has made it simple for customers to do just that by developing three vibrant “What’s on Your Plate?” guides – one for each grocery partner. Customers can easily access Meijer’s guide through their phone or download it for free
by visiting pinkribbonproduce.org. This resource helps shoppers actively fill half of their plate with fruits and vegetables by featuring tasty, healthy recipes. “Our team is pleased to have Pink Ribbon Produce in our stores year after year,” Brian Coates, senior produce buyer at Meijer said. “The ‘What’s on your Plate?’ challenge is a great way for Meijer customers to fight breast cancer by making small changes to simply develop healthy eating habits.” During the month of October, Pink Ribbon Produce will bring 583 Meijer, Harris Teeter and Price Chopper stores together. Each grocer is also working with various produce partners whose products are featured in the “What’s On Your Plate?” guide. Meijer’s produce partners supporting this year’s Pink Ribbon Produce campaign include: Avocados from Mexico avocados, Bolthouse Farms juice, DNE World Fruit citrus, DOLE Salads packaged salads, Highline Mushrooms organic mushrooms, Litehouse OPA Greek yogurt, dressings, and dips, Pero Family Farms mini sweet peppers and green beans, SUNSET Produce campari tomatoes, Southern Specialties green beans and asparagus, and Wonderful Citrus Valencia oranges. Through its partnership with Pink Ribbon Produce, Meijer
provides customers with an easy way to get involved in the fight against breast cancer. By purchasing produce from the above participating suppliers, customers are both symbolically and financially supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since beginning its partnership with Pink Ribbon Produce, Meijer and its produce suppliers have raised over $226,000 for breast cancer research and prevention. “We are proud to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Pink Ribbon Produce and grateful to have Meijer as one of our community partners,” Debbie Augustine, founder/executive creative director of AugustineIdeas said. “By uniting produce partners and educating consumers about the importance of healthy eating and lifestyle choices, this promotion has touched thousands of lives and raised over half a million dollars for breast cancer awareness and prevention in the past nine years.” Through various fundraising activities – including its partnership with Meijer through Pink Ribbon Produce – NBCF provides funding for research, educational programs and mammograms to women across the country. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Meijer invites its customers to follow
Pink Ribbon Produce on Instagram at @pinkribbonproduce, take a picture of their fresh plate using at least one partner product and share it using the hashtag #whatsonyourplate for a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card. The winner will also have a donation made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in his or her name. For more information about Pink Ribbon Produce, Meijer and ways to donate, please visit pinkribbonproduce.org, follow Pink Ribbon Produce on Twitter at @PinkRibbn or become a fan at Facebook. com/PinkRibbonProduce.
