Fire Engine Pink

By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT

Emergency services all across the country are showing their support of raising cancer awareness by turning a vehicle pink. Nevertheless, one can be caught by surprise when spotting one unexpectedly. I came across “Jessica”, a pink fire truck from the Northern Illinois chapter of the ‘Pink Heals’ organization on Thursday, October 6. Sitting in front of’ Lulu’s Wiggin’ Out’ shop in Downtown Crystal Lake, Jessica is there in honor of Ladies’ Night Out. She is the first pink fire truck in Illinois. Jessica is being escorted by Jennifer and Steve Rusin with their children Hannah and Joshua. Steve’s mother battled cancer and passed away last year, his father passed in 1995. “Anyone who has cancer or has had cancer or a member of the family can sign her [Jessica],” Jennifer says. “It is part of the Pink Heals National Tour. We try to hit every state every two years. We visit 25 states one year and the other 25 states the next year.” Tour drivers volunteer up to 21 days at a time to drive pink fire trucks and police cars across the country. They deliver Pink Heals programs to communities. These programs bring communities together based on the love of women and their families. “It is a program that provides home visits to show individuals that they are loved, cherished and important to others. Pink Heals brings back the human element by celebrating people not causes.” The Pink Heals program raises cancer awareness with their very visible and distinctive pink fire trucks, police vehicles, and ambulances. They are currently in the process of turning a HarleyDavidson motorcycle pink to join their efforts. The money raised by Pink Heals goes entirely to the local community. Pink Heals keeps nothing for itself. It is supported by the sale of its own line of clothing and merchandise. This money supports the trucks and pays for the tour. There are no salaries, pensions or hidden agendas. “No one should benefit from the illnesses and misfortunes of others. It’s time to bring fundraising back as it was intended I our hearts – to help one another without expecting anything in return.”

Jessica is parked in front of Lulu’s Wiggin’ Out at 63 N. Williams Street. Luann Bauer, owner of Lulu’s, is a strong supporter of Pink Heals and she is thrilled that Jessica is out front. Bauer is a survivor of breast cancer. “I am committed to helping women feel beautiful while undergoing the difficulties of cancer,” she says. Bauer opened her first business in Algonquin, expanded into other locations and has now consolidated into one store in Crystal Lake. She offers both human hair wigs and synthetic wigs as well as a collection of designer clothing an accessories. “We pride ourselves on the personal service we offer to help our customers find the perfect wig, accessory or gift. Pink is the color of the day at Lulu’s Wiggin’ Out as they support the fight against breast cancer and Pink Heals. You can learn more about Lulu’s at www.luluswigginout.com and about Pink Heals at www.pinkhealsIL.org.

Jessica is the first pink fire truck in Illinois. She can be signed by anyone who has cancer, has had cancer or by a member of the family.

Restorative Reflexology, the newest in alternative health businesses in Crystal Lake is owned my mother-daughter team Debbie Berg and Courtney Hayes. The business opened its doors in June but held the Grand opening ribbon cutting with the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce in September. “Reflexology finds congestion in the hands and feet that corresponds to different parts of the body,” Hayes says. “We work out the congestion so the body can heal. Reflexology is an ancient therapy based on the principle that there are specific reflexes on the hands and feet that correspond to all of the organs, glands, and parts of the body.” It has been known to relive back pain, reduce stress, stimulate nerve function and relive pain from injuries. It can speed healing, regulate sleep disorders and help the body fight infection. “My mind was clearer and my health improved when I had a session done on myself,” Berg tells me. “I decided to go back to school. I have been a reflexologist for ten years now.” Certified by the International Institute of Reflexology, Berg personalizes her treatments to meet each person’s specific needs. She can address pain relief, stress reduction, improved circulation and cancer support wellness. Berg’s daughter, Courtney, Hayes, is also certified by the International Institute of Reflexology. “I started because of my mom,”

she says. “I can heal people in a healthy way.” Hayes focuses on relaxing the mind and the body to bring people back into mental and physical balance. She can work with general pain management and stress relief or specific illnesses. There are 7200 nerve endings in each foot. These nerve endings are interconnected extensively throughout the spinal cord and brain to every area of the body. Reflexology uses pressure, movement and stretching applied by fingers and hands to act on the different parts of the body. The National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health have funded several studies which indicate that “reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that reflexology may have benefits in palliative care of people with cancer,” according to the Mayo Clinic. “Reflexology encourages the self-healing process,” says Berg. “It brings the body back into balance by restoring it to its natural state of well-being with harmony between the flow f energy, circulation and muscle tension.” “Reflexology is a natural, drugfree way to reduce stress, increase circulation and assist the body to heal itself.” Further information on this healing modality and on the health professionals at Restorative Reflexology located at 87 Grant Street in Crystal Lake can be found online at www.restorativereflexology. com.

Kitchen Outfitters owner, Mary Behrens with Chef Ingo from Ole Towne Hall Banquets in Downtown Crystal Lake.

Out on the town By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT

The sun is on the verge of setting, the streets are hopping and lights are on in many stores along Williams Street. From Mellie’s Chocolates at one end of Crystal Lake’s Downtown area to the Crystal Lake Brewery on the other end, shops are open late on Thursday, October 6, for Ladies’ Night Out. 37 businesses are running specials for the evening and every purchase earns another chance at winning the Grand Raffle Drawing at the After Party in Georgio’s. The Raue Center for the Arts is the beginning point for the evening. They are registering the ladies and handing out maps, bags and raffle tickets along with their special offer for the evening of discounts at their shows. The Gavers Community Cancer Foundation is also set up in the Raue Center lobby to introduce, or remind, the ladies about their organization and to request donations. Out the door with maps of participating businesses in hand, the ladies scatter. Up the street, down the street, across the street, they disappear quickly to take advantage of all the discounts and specials being offered tonight. Mellie’s Chocolates is tempting ladies with $1.00 Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and Raspberries. Marvin’s Toys is offering “a sweet treat and something to sip as well as 15% off the entire store.” The Crystal Lake Bank & Trust has a photo booth, snacks, beverages and prizes. Duke’s Alehouse has half price bottles of wine

while the Crystal Lake Brewery is offering free taster glasses of their Last Cast Blood Orange IPA beer, an essential oils class and live music. Kitchen Outfitters entices ladies inside with a 15% off offer and freshly cooked demo food by Chef Ingo. “Ingo is a staple at Ladies’ Night,” says owner Mary Behrens. “I don’t know what I would do without him.” Chef Ingo works right around the corner at Old Towne Hall Banquets, the oldest banquet hall in Crystal Lake. “This whole thing,” Chef Ingo indicates his work counter and surrounding area, “is an example of how Downtown Crystal Lake works together. He has come over to Kitchen Outfitters and is cooking delectable demonstration foods with oil supplied by The Olive Tap. “We want everyone to succeed. There are no empty storefronts in Downtown Crystal Lake.” “Things are going great!” says Mary Behrens of her store, Kitchen Outfitters. “We have the best customers here. It’s been a blast. I can’t tell you how much fun it is. That makes it a pleasure to give a discount at Ladies’ Night.” www. kitchenoutfitterscrystallake.com Every participating store has plenty of customers on this evening. With the business owners working together and customers taking full advantage of every discount and special they can, the Crystal Lake Ladies’ Night Out is a success for everyone. Further information on events in Downtown Crystal Lake can be found online at www.downtowncl. org.

Care package items collected for servicemen State Rep. Jack D. Franks, DMarengo and the McHenry VFW Auxiliary Post #4600 have been collecting items for the care package program. “I am thrilled with the outpouring of generosity we received for this donation effort,” said Franks. “The amount of support shown by the people of the McHenry County for our men and women overseas is a reminder that what unites us is far stronger than what divides us.” Representative Franks encourages anyone who is interested in helping with the McHenry VFW’s care package program and other VFW volunteer efforts to contact Barbara Klapperich at the McHenry VFW Auxiliary Post #4600.

(Right) To help provide an authentic experience for their legislative simulation project, state Rep. Jack D. Franks, D-Marengo, joined students from Marengo Community High School recently to answer questions about the legislative process. “Engaging youth in our democratic process is one of my highest priorities as an elected official,” Franks said. “To see so many young people interested in learning about the work that a legislature does was truly inspiring.”

SwedishAmerican earns prestigious baby-friendly hospital designation SwedishAmerican is pleased to announce it has earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) designation. BFHI is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals that provide an optimal level of care for breastfeeding and mother/baby bonding. The designation showcases that SwedishAmerican is a premier birthing center that provides information, confidence, and skills to new moms on how to successfully initiate and breastfeed their babies. Becoming a Baby-Friendly facility is a comprehensive, detailed, and thorough three-year journey toward excellence in providing evidencebased, maternity care with the goal of achieving optimal breastfeeding outcomes for mother and baby. Additionally, the designation requires training and skill building among all levels of staff from labor and delivery nurses to mother/baby nurses to lactation consultants. The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed, and the award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as demonstrated by quality processes. “SwedishAmerican is beyond thrilled to be named a Baby-Friendly Hospital,” SwedishAmerican Mother Baby Manager Jan Southard said. “The journey to this designation helped our staff build leadership and teamwork skills, but most importantly, it will enhance patient satisfaction and improve health outcomes for both mom and baby.” SwedishAmerican began its journey to become a Baby-Friendly Hospital in August of 2013. The hospital formed a task force team comprised of physicians, nurses, and lactation consultants. Over the course of three years, the group worked to revise hospital policies, build community relationships, provide training for hospital staff, and change existing practices to

ensure that it would qualify as a Baby-Friendly hospital. Additionally, SwedishAmerican opened a new Mother/Baby unit on the 8th floor of the hospital in December of 2014. The 3,000-square-foot unit provides private rooms for all new moms, allowing mom and baby to room together which allows for more mother/baby bonding time and skin-to-skin contact whenever possible. “This designation shows our patients that we are a center of excellence when it comes to helping them achieve their goals of breastfeeding and more,” SwedishAmerican Women, Children and Clinical Services Director Fiona Springman said. “Studies have shown that breastfeeding lowers risks for certain diseases and improves health for both mom and baby. This designation is one more way SwedishAmerican is helping to improve the health and wellness of even our littlest patients.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately four million babies are born each year in the U.S., and only 14 percent of these babies are born in Baby-Friendly Hospitals. Of the approximately 3,300 maternity hospitals in the U.S., approximately only 377 are Baby-Friendly designated. To learn more about SwedishAmerican’s BFHI, visit www.swedishamerican.org. About SwedishAmerican A division of UW Health, SwedishAmerican is dedicated to providing excellence in healthcare and compassionate care to the community. The organization serves residents of 12 counties in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through a dedicated and caring staff, a major acute care hospital and a free-standing outpatient cancer center in Rockford, a medical center in Belvidere, a network of 30 primary care and multi-specialty clinics and the region’s largest home healthcare agency. Additionally, SwedishAmerican has achieved Magnet® recognition as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care.
