Weaving in Woodstock By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
T
he Old Courthouse Arts Center in Woodstock is currently hosting the 18th Annual Textile & Fiber Arts Show. This show is being presented by the Woodstock Weavers Guild and is displaying some awardwinning fiber art. The room is attended today by Rita Hagenbruch, member of the Woodstock Weavers Guild. “I’ve been weaving for 42 years,” Hagenbruch tells me. “My great-grandmother learned to weave as a schoolchild in Sweden. She was too busy to weave when they immigrated to the U.S. I inherited a treasure trove of textiles woven by my greatgrandmother and great-aunts which inspired me. I won the Libby Cranford Award for a tencel shawl.” “I teach weaving through the Midwest,” She continues. “I was in Indiana yesterday, talking about Swedish weaving. In April, I taught Swedish Weave Half Drell. Rita’s husband is a dentist. He is past president of the Illinois Dental Association and is currently a trustee of the organization. “When we went to conferences in Chicago, everyone always liked what I was wearing. I always came back with 8 or 9 commissions. I have supported my hobby. I have done a lot of commission work.” “I teach Beginning Weaving at The Fold in Marengo. It’s the best yarn shop
in all of Chicagoland. Our group library is at The Fold. They are open from 10 to 5.” The Fold is located at 3316 Millstream Rd, Marengo, IL 60152. www.thefoldatmc.net “”Our group [Woodstock Weavers Guild] comes from 17 counties in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. We have a business meeting, then a guest speaker and we go out to lunch afterwards. We get about 30 people at a time [attending a meeting]. We meet at the Farm bureau on McConnell Road.” 1102 McConnell Road, Woodstock, IL 60098. “We’re a very welcoming group and open to visitors,” says Haganbruch. “The Woodstock Weavers Guild is an active fiber arts Guild that promotes handweaving and allied crafts,” states their website. They have study groups for Color and Tapestry. They are starting a New Weavers Group as well. Their brochure expands on this information, “We are a diverse group of individuals and families in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin who enjoy weaving, spinning and various fiber arts. Our experience levels range from beginner to weaving professionals.” “We enjoy trying new weaving methods and having new weaving experiences. We typically schedule one or two workshops each year featuring a well-known and experienced weaver.”

Peace in crisis: a warrior’s wish By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
MCHENRY COUNTY — As children, we often run to our mother when we are hurt or frightened. One mother in McHenry, IL, has fulfilled her son’s wish and extended her nurturing care to numerous families in crisis. Sandra Barcus lost her son, Collier, on July 8, 2004, during enemy action in Iraq. Collier had had a troubled youth and eventually found respite at the Mt. Carmel Youth Ranch in Wyoming. He stayed there as he went through rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse. He joined the Army following 9/11 and found his niche in the world as he rose through the ranks, earning merits and honors of many kinds. “Collier excelled in the Army like never before.” “Collier’s death greatly affected his family, friends and those from Mt.
Carmel Youth Ranch who all loved him so much. For all of those who had seen him grow from a troubled youth to a young hero, Collier touched the lives of many.” “Collier always talked about returning to Wyoming after his tour in Iraq so he could continue to make a difference with a ranch of his own. To honor that dream, Collier House was created to ‘make a difference’ to those families in crisis.” Sandra Barcus and her family “set out to create a cabin where families could come together to rest, reflect and remember their loved ones. A site overlooking Clark, Wyoming, was chosen.” A board of directors for Collier House began fundraising and the site was dedicated on July 8, 2011, “to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the death of U.S. Army Spc. 1st Class Collier Barcus is Samarra, Iraq.”
“Since opening, Collier House has provided free lodging to facilitate more than 35 family visits. The purpose of Collier House to honor the sacrifice of Spc. Collier E. Barcus and the hero sons and daughters who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy during the War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom.” “We hope that families who pass through Collier House will return to their communities and lead whole, happy and productive lives in a place where PEACE is a way of life.” To support Collier House - where hearts come to heal, fundraising efforts continue. On Saturday, November 7, 2015, Collier House is hosting a spaghetti dinner in Collier’s hometown of McHenry. It will be held at the McHenry VFW, located at 3002 W. Route 120 in McHenry. The cost for this event is $15.00 for an adult, $10.00
for children ages 4-9 and children aged 3 and under are free. The Joey Sunset Project will provide music for this event. St John’s Northwestern Military Academy Silver Rifles drill Team will be giving a demonstration. Food will be donated by McHenry Olive Garden, Sweet Pea Cakes of Crystal Lake, and the Swiss Maid Bakery in Woodstock. Your participation in this fundraiser will allow Collier House to continue to provide short-term lodging for families of young adults in recovery and Gold Star families of military personnel killed in action. It is hoped that this peaceful, quiet cabin will be a serene retreat for guests to experience respite and solace from the trauma and stress they have endured. Collier House is a non-profit organization which can be located online at www.collierhouse.org.

My big little life, little big life and blooming happy life
I
used to dream of a Big Life. Now I know I have one. When I was a high school and college girl dreamer, I envisioned travel and romance but didn’t have details filled in. I didn’t dream of stages or Hollywood or New York City. I only knew I wanted to go places, meet people, do things, learn, explore, experience, discover. And I thought that meant it had to happen elsewhere. I had to get out of my hometown in order to Live Big. The whole “bloom where you’re planted” thing never resonated with me. I didn’t want to bloom here. I was sure the soil was more fertile somewhere else. I didn’t know where exactly, but I assumed I needed different dirt. I thought one only became a “real success” by leaving home, striking out on their own, and venturing into the world. As I reflect on Big Things that have happened in my life, they have their roots right here. It seems the local soil might just be a pretty good mix for me. My college choice was a small school less than two hours from home. Among all the wonderful events of my college career, one was a fellowship that took me to England. During that summer, I went to Live Aid, waved at Princess Di, and did plenty of learning, exploring and discovering. That was my first solo travel and my first travel abroad. The fellowship I received is only granted to students at sixteen

District 155 Board votes on bleacher tear down By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MCHENRY COUNTY — The District 155 School Board met on Wed. Oct 14 to vote on whether or not to allow the bleachers at Crystal Lake South High School should be torn down. The bleachers, which were originally ordered to be torn down last October by the McHenry County Courts, had a stay of execution while the Illinois Supreme Court reviewed their case. In September, the Illinois Supreme Court upheld the previous judgment, citing above all else that the school failed to adhere to local zoning laws and regulations during construction. District 155’s board voted in favor of tear down with a 5 - 2 decision in favor of removal. The cost of the bleacher construction exceeded $1.2 million initially and now will cost almost a quarter of that amount to have torn down per the latest bid. The courts are currently waiting for a potential compromise between the City of Crystal Lake, the neighbors who filed suit, and the school district before tear down happens. The lawsuit was ongoing for over two years before it was settled last

the backpack as our little one climbed the big steps of the school bus on that very first, first day. And then we returned home and tried not to cry. Most of us were not successful in that regard. Universal parenting truth number four: Crying. First day of kindergarten notwithstanding, you’ll cry. A lot. You’ll cry at their first smile (and swear it isn’t gas). You’ll cry when they are happy. You’ll cry when they are sad. You will cry with worry. You will cry when they don’t sleep through the night. You’ll cry the first time they sleep through the night. You’ll cry with them. Sometimes you’ll try not to let them see you cry. You’ll cry when they have their first sleepover and go to prom and on the day you drop them off at college. The crying never stops. Embrace it. Universal parenting truth number five: Parenting clichés can and will come out of your mouth. It will happen more often than you’d like to admit. Some days you will swear (but not the F-word) you are turning into your mother (or father) when you hear yourself saying things like, “Because I said so!” “Life’s not fair. Get used to it.” “I’m the mom, that’s why.” “Don’t make me turn this car around!” “Just wait until we get home!” “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?” “You weren’t born in a barn!” “There
are kids starving in China who would love to eat your green beans.” “Your room looks like a cyclone went through it.” And so on. Universal parenting truth number six: Lying. Despite your best intentions (and we all have those) you’re going to lie to them. About holiday heroes. About where you keep the good chocolate. About the grades you got in high school. About the slight run in with the law during your freshman year at college. About hiding cauliflower in the mashed potatoes and squash in the mac and cheese. About borrowing money from their piggy bank. Yeah, it all happens. Universal parenting truth number seven: The pregnancy time continuum. Even if they are born on their due date, waiting for them to enter the world will be the longest 12 months of your life. Yes, I am aware of my math here. Universal parenting truth number eight: They change you in ways you never thought possible. There are the obvious changes – stretch marks, weight gain, bags under your eyes from lack of sleep and C-section scars. But there are other changes to your inner self – to your core and your heart – that will forge you into a person who is not only able to complete the endurance event of parenting, but delights in conquering it every day. You will universally love and be loved universally. And that is the truth (number nine). Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Two weeks of tension ends in carjacking, chase and arrest By Jennifer Eisenbart Editor
The tableau set by Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth Tuesday night was colored deeply with relief. He and his deputies had huddled around their various radios around 4 p.m. Tuesday, waiting for two critical words. “In custody,” finally came across the radio. And, while ANDREW Beth waited, OBREGON a further confirmation was broadcasted. “’He’s in custody, and it’s Andy Obregon,’” related Beth Tuesday night regarding the radio communication. Those words touched off cheers, high-fives and handshakes among members of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s department and put an end to weeks of community tension as the fugitive Andrew Obregon eluded police and allegedly committed crime after crime. The manhunt for Obregon, which began shortly after Tywon Anderson went missing Sept. 19 and intensified after Anderson was found murdered Sept. 26, ended shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon just across the state border in Winthrop Harbor, Ill. “It’s over,” announced Beth at the start of his news conference Tuesday evening. Obregon was in custody and transported to a Lake County detention facility after receiving treatment for what Beth said a gunshot wound following his capture. Obregon, 32, was being pursued as a suspect in the murder of Anderson, a known drug dealer according to Beth. It was a tension-filled period of pursuit, punctuated by high-speed car chases, latenight farm field searches and, finally, Tuesday’s carjacking at a vacant home in western Kenosha County. In between, Obregon allegedly robbed one business, broke into at least one other business and stole at least four vehicles. The capture According to Beth, a 59-year-old woman went to check on a vacant family property near highways JB and JW shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday. While Beth didn’t know why she had chosen to go to the property now, the woman reportedly found Obregon hiding in the home. Beth said the woman resisted giving the suspect her keys. According to the information provided by the woman, Obregon then assaulted her and took off in her silver Chevy Spark. The woman was beaten so severely that she was transported by Flight for Life heli-
copter to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa following the attack. She will be questioned by police in coming days. Another high-speed pursuit ensued, and Obregon ended up crossing the state line into Lake County. Obregon was located in Zion, and then went north to Winthrop Harbor. Shots were apparently fired in pursuit of Obregon, but all law enforcement officers were safe. At that point, Obregon abandoned the stolen vehicle and took off on foot. Beth said that police dogs from both the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department and Lake County were used in apprehending Obregon. It was unclear whether Obregon was armed when captured. According to Beth, Obregon was “coherent enough to say the names of our deputies” with who he had become familiar through years of contact with the Sheriff’s Office. Beth said that it looked like Obregon was trying to get back to his area of comfort – the Brighton/Paris/Kansasville area along the Kenosha and Racine County border – when he was captured. Obregon was expected to be held in Lake County until an extradition hearing could be held to bring him back to Wisconsin. According to various reports, he was released from a hospital Tuesday night and taken to the Lake County Jail. The deputies who saw Obregon after his capture told Beth it looked like the man had aged 10 years in the last two weeks. That drew an emotional reaction from Beth. “As far as I’m concerned – good, because it’s taken its

toll on the community just as much as it’s taken – even more than – it’s taken its toll on Andy.” Grateful for the help Beth was the only member of law enforcement who spoke at the press conference, but he was quick to point out that he played just a small part in the capture. “Truthfully, the part I played in this was very small, compared to everyone else who played major roles,” Beth said. He extended thanks to every law enforcement agency involved, which included both the Racine County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Kenosha Police and the U.S. Marshall’s Service. He also thanked Illinois law enforcement, which had been alerted before Tuesday and ended up
involved in the capture. Beth also said he’d been in communication with other members of the Obregon family, who had expressed their sadness over what Obregon had done, their gratitude to law enforcement – and their apologies. “They apologized for what Andy did to the community, and how it affected everyone,” he explained. “They hurt, too.” Beth took perhaps an unusual route Tuesday afternoon while the chase was ongoing – emailing the vehicle license plate, color and make to area media outlets to get the word out. That email went out about 3:30 p.m. “You’ve been so helpful to us,” Beth said. “For helping us to a quick resolve of this entire issue.”
A TRAIL OF CRIME AND TENSION
Here’s the timeline of the events leading up to Andrew Obregon’s capture Tuesday afternoon: • Sept. 19 – Tywon Anderson last seen in Kenosha. • Sept. 21 – Tywon Anderson reported missing by his family. Also, Obregon seen in Paddock Lake, fleeing from deputies. A motorcycle Obregon was operating was impounded and believed to be stolen. • Sept. 23 – Deputies recover stolen Jeep in Paddock Lake taken from Kenosha Aug. 26. • Sept. 26 – Body of Anderson found in cornfield along Highway A. • Oct. 2 – Black Mustang reported stolen on 38th Street. Deputies locate the Mustang, and engage in high-speed pursuit. Chase extends into Racine County, bringing in that sheriff’s department. The chase is eventually broken off to keep students in Union Grove safe as the high school was dismissing. • Oct. 3 – Kenosha Police respond to robbery at Dollar Tree on 52nd St. Obregon reportedly stole candy and chips. • Oct. 4 – Deputies respond to Country Side Mini Mart on 93rd for burglary. Later, they respond to a Speedway on 75th St.
for an armed robbery. Deputies pursue the vehicle (which had been stolen) in that burglary, which later crashed. About four hours later, another vehicle is stolen, a white 2015 Ford Transit Van. • Oct. 4 – Stolen black Mustang recovered. • Oct. 6 – Racine County Sheriff’s Department pursues white pickup truck with stolen plates to area near Bong State Recreation Area in Brighton. Obregon eludes capture again. • Oct. 7 – Kenosha Police recover stolen Ford Transit Van. • Oct. 9 – Racine County Sheriff’s Department recovers stolen white pickup truck, and searches for Obregon in the Bohners Lake area. Frightened woman arms herself and is injured when she accidently shoots herself when she drops handgun. • Oct. 13, 2:51 p.m. – Obregon carjacks a Chevy Spark when a 59-year-old woman comes to check on a vacant property. A high-speed chase into Illinois occurs. • Oct. 13, about 4 p.m. – Obregon taken into custody in Lake County, Ill., at least one shot is fired as Obregon suffers gunshot wound to his arm. Source: Kenosha County Sheriff ’s Office
What’s next? With the capture of Obregon behind him, Beth said Tuesday that his deputies could finally go home for a decent night’s sleep – and then focus on the road ahead. “This is the first night they can actually go to bed and start working on the homicide portion of this,” Beth said. “That is a huge undertaking all by itself.” That includes the murder investigation of Anderson, which Beth said had taken a back seat to the Obregon search. At Monday night’s news conference/community meeting at the Kansasville Fire Department, Beth said it is believed that Anderson’s death was a revenge killing by Obregon over a drug deal gone bad. There are also a number of questions that need to be addressed to Obregon, including where he had been hiding. Beth also planned on questioning the woman who Obregon had attacked in the carjacking. The relief, however, was palpable – both for Beth and the community, he felt. “Multiply the relief I feel by tens of thousands of people,” he said. “It’s over. It’s like this huge boulder has been lifted off myself, my department and this entire community.” Beth stressed that Obregon’s “terrorizing” of the public – which had led to several area schools cancelling field trips and holding recess indoors, as well as the public arming themselves both inside their homes and out – was over. “It can go back to where the kids can feel safe in their playgrounds and in their school,” Beth said. “Their parents can feel safe in the community, and their homes. “It’s going to go back now to the way it was a few short weeks ago,” Beth added.

Marengo roundabout plans finalized By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MCHENRY COUNTY — After lengthy debate and planning, the first roundabout in a major round in rural Marengo is set to move forward. The Harmony and Route 20 intersection will become a reality as earlier as next year according to plans from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The roundabout was exceptionally controversial due to the old Harmony School building at the southwest corner of the intersection. The new plans will eliminate any need to move, demolish or adjust the schoolhouse. The roundabout will instead avoid the historic building altogether. The Coral Township intersection is one of the most treacherous spots on the approximately nine-mile stretch between Route 20 and I-90’s interchange and the actual City of Marengo. Feedback, alongside functionality and reduced cost of the changed plan, were amongst the reason IDOT adopted a different approach for this roundabout. The Old Harmony School building is over 80 years old. It currently houses a car resale business named Harmony Auto Sales. Their inventory takes up a generous amount of space along Route 20 toward the I-90 interchange. According to a release from IDOT, preliminary engineering on this particular project could be completed before the end of 2015 and physical construction would being during IDOT’s 2016-21 Highway Improvement Program plans. Projected cost to complete the roundabout is in the ballpark of $5 million. IDOT officials reported that they feel the roundabout is a better option for this particular intersection than a traditional traffic light. The route is largely used for trucks and work commuters as either an alternative or an easy access to I-90. There is also still a proposed roundabout closer to Marengo at the Route 20 and Marengo Road intersection. With the higher speed limits between 45 and 55 MPH in the area, the roundabouts will allow large semi-trucks to safely navigate through the intersection without abruptly stopping for a light. The Route 20 and Marengo roundabout is also in the stages of preliminary engineering and the timeline for its completion, pending finalized funding, could run on schedule with the Route 20 and Harmony roundabout during 2016.

Ladies’ Day Out at the VFW By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
S
unday, October 11, finds a cozy room at the Woodstock VFW Post 5040 filled with women and tables of fun and interesting items for sale. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Woodstock Food Pantry, the Salvation Army and VFW Post 5040. Ten small businesses and organizations have gathered to provide ladies with an enjoyable day and a way to help others at the same time. Stephanie Fritz, senior director of ‘Thirty-One Gifts’, is one of the vendors here today. “What’s unique about us is that we embroider. We personalize gifts. It’s kind of a dream job,” Fritz says. “You make your own hours, party when you want to party and support other women. I can work from home.” “The name ‘Thirty-One Gifts’ is taken from Proverbs 31 [in the Holy Bible] which describes the attributes and importance of a ‘Virtuous Woman’. Founder, Cindy Monroe, started ThirtyOne in her basement in 2003. We’ve grown into one of the most successful direct-selling businesses in the world with more than 90,000 independent Sales Consultants across the U.S. and Canada.” “I’ve been blessed by the company. IT came along at the right time. I joined for one reason and it turned into something else,” Fritz tells me. “We are people who believe in celebrating, encouraging and rewarding others for who they are. Through God’s strength, we’ve built a family of individuals who feel women deserve to treat themselves and those around them to something special. Our commitment is to provide women with a fulfilling, enjoyable and rewarding experience one person at a time.” Stephanie Fritz has been with ‘Thirty-One Gifts’ for 5 ½ years. “I have a team of 60 under me. I have girls all over the country. We all support each other.”

I am here [today] to support the VFW,” Villarreal says. “Scentsy is a fragrance company. It started out with candles and now offers scented oil diffusers as well. We are expanding lines for children and home. This is my favorite job. I have made a lot of friends. I have a real sisterhood across the country.” “Scentsy has flourished from a small family operation to a thriving international company and a leader in the direct selling industry. The basis for Scentsy Family’s business philosophy comes from a quote by Albert Einstein, ‘Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value. A successful man takes out of life more than he puts in. A man of value will give more than he receives’.” www.
