Autumn Drive
2016
By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
The 29th Annual Autumn Drive brought hundreds of people out into the country roads between Woodstock and Marengo. The map they handed out shows 23 locations participating in the Drive and most of those locations hold multiple vendors. A typical description of a stop on the map reads: “20+ booths are featured in both indoor and outdoor displays. There truly is a little something for everyone at this stop; from lunch to sweets, antiques to treasures, Christmas/Halloween decorations and jewelry to sweatshirts and skin care. All this and an indoor restroom available to the public.” Restaurants are listed on the map or you can find food along the way; supporting Boy Scouts serving brats and burgers; candy or doughnuts or the ever popular kettle corn vendor. Along the way, you might see: Woodstock’s ‘Helping Paws Animal Shelter’. They have Macy with them. Macy is a hound mix with three sisters. They were born on July 7, 2016. Kim Holesha of the Marengo-Union Public Library displaying “No Plot? No Problem!” book by Chris Baty, the founder of National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo.
Fire up your computer, stock up on pens and paper and sharpen your pencils because the 18th Annual National Novel Writing Month is here. Your November challenge is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. You don’t have to do it alone. You don’t have to lock yourself in a room and survive on cola and crackers. Many libraries and bookstores in McHenry County are offering support and advice. The Huntley Area Public Library will have a Write In Workshop on November 5, 9 – 11 am. It will have Word Wars and Sprints. You can learn more about the regional community of writers who will help support and encourage you to reach your writing goals. The local NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison will have writing prompts, advice, and the official NaNoWriMo stickers for 2016. In Woodstock, Read Between the Lynes Bookstore is planning Friday Night Write Ins from 6 – 8 pm. “A lot of the staff will be participating, including me and my poetry club – Atrocious Poets, “says Sophie Julin. “We are going to do one poem a day and end up with a collection.” “You don’t have to be conventional,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be polished. We’re excited to start the evenings and bring in writers for the month of November. We might offer specials to the writers.” The Marengo-Union Public Library is offering two discussions with authors: Adela Crandell Durkee will be at the library on Thursday, November 10, at 6 pm. “She has written for a newspaper, “Kim Holesha, Programming Coordinator says.
“She has written two books that are in the process of being published.” “On Saturday, November 19, at 11 am, Dan Klefstad of WNIJ Radio will be here. On air, he talks about books, talks about authors and talks with authors.” He is the host of ‘The Morning Edition’ and the ‘Book Series’ editor for the radio station. “Both of them are coming to talk about writing and their experiences,” says Holesha. “Basically they will be question and answer sessions.” “Everyone has a story to tell and wouldn’t it be great to get it on paper? You don’t know what you’ve got inside you until you get it out.” The McHenry Public Library is holding Write Ins throughout the month. Mondays at 4:30 pm is their Young Writers sessions and on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm is their Tween/Teen Writers sessions. Things are still in the planning stages at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Crystal Lake and the Woodstock Public Library is thinking about doing something. To participate, you can sign up for free on the www.NaNoWriMo.org website. It includes the chance to meet fellow authors in the area, pep talks by famous authors and tools that will help you to get organized. If you want to write something else, you can join the NaNo Rebels. They write short stories, creative non-fiction, experimental work, memoirs, poetry, and, essentially, anything else but novels. NaNoWriMo is designed for adult participants but the Young Writers program is very popular as well. Check your local library and bookstore and see what events they are offering in November to help you get your words on paper.

Walking for Friends By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
“I am not a survivor,” Marilyn Grandolfo tells me. “I have 5 family members and 22 friends currently undergoing chemo. Sandy is battling breast cancer for the fourth time. Kasia Cannon is on the Philly Walk right now. She is on chemo and the cancer has spread to her lungs.” “I have walked in 17 60-mile walks,” she continues. “I have raised roughly $74,000 for the Susan G. Koman Foundation. I am addicted to the 60-mile walks.” Grandolfo is participating in the 2016 Autumn Drive with a booth filled with clothing, scarves, hats and more. “Everything I have here is hand-made and my design. Everything is washable except two fur jackets and a fur vest.” The money she raises will go towards breast cancer research. “People get all bent out of shape – breast cancer, breast cancer, breast cancer – all the time, but Keytruda came about because of breast cancer research. Keytruda was funded through the Susan G. Koman Foundation. It was developed to deal with melanoma. Jimmy Carter had melanoma on the brain and Keytruda saved his life.” Keytruda is an immunotherapy drug which continues to yield encouraging results. On May 18, 2016, information released before the American Society of Clinical Oncology shows that “40% of patients who receive pembrolizumab (Keytruda) as part of a clinical trial are still alive three years later – a huge improvement over just a few years ago when average survival time for patients with metastatic melanoma was measured in months.” www.mskcc.org
Cancer has become more and more familiar to us in the last 60 years. In the 1950s the New York Times would not publish an ad for a breast cancer support group because it refused to print the words ‘breast’ or ‘cancer’. The mandatory mammogram exam was invented in 1969. The standard treatment of breast cancer in the 1970s involved anesthesia for a biopsy and, if the result was positive for cancer, an immediate, radical mastectomy without consultation. Cancer can attack any part of the body from skin down to our deepest organs. “Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. When cancer develops, however, this orderly process breaks down. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed. Cancerous tumors are malignant, which means they can spread into, or invade, nearby tisANNE EICKSTADT PHOTO McHenry County News sues.” - www.cancer.gov The Susan G. One way we can help each other get through these challenging times is to keep our dollars local. Here are three good reasons. Reason #1: Shopping locally saves you gas and wear and tear on your vehicle. Reason #2: When you spend your money locally, you support the businesses whose property taxes pay for our municipal services. Reason #3: Many of our youth programs are supported and sponsored by local businesses and if we don’t support them, they can’t support our kids. BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Losing groceries on marital adventures
M
y husband and I recently adopted the exciting habit of team grocery shopping – together. We don’t go for many items at one time; I think that would be too much for our relationship to bear. Our usual list might contain a handful of entries – milk, eggs, bread, pickles. That’s about our limit. We’re still in the rookie league. After decades of shopping solo (me), the prospect of a shopping buddy can be both exciting and terrifying – for both of us. We’re starting things slow.
Still, problems ensue. A couple weeks ago, we went to get ingredients for homemade sausage pizza. This included Italian sausage. Experienced foodies will understand it is difficult, impossible even, to make sausage pizza without the sausage. Once at the store, we sashayed over to the meat department, found the sausage (spicy, not mild) and made our purchase. We also had a few other items as noted above. Then, we left. Upon returning home, we unpacked
Notice to residents: Conservation District sites closing for hunting program The public should be aware that a number of McHenry County Conservation District sites will be closed on certain days this fall to allow for the District’s recreational hunting program. The following sites will be closed to the public due to hunting: Nov. 1–Jan. 15 Brookdale Paulsen Rd. Multi-Use Trail, Woodstock; High Point, Harvard; Fox Bluff, Cary; and Winding Creek, Hebron Nov. 4–6 & Nov. 11–13 Hickory Grove Riverfront; Hickory Grove Highlands; Lyons Prairie and Marsh; Silver Creek in Crystal Lake; and Stickney Run in McHenry Nov. 18–20 Pleasant Valley; Rush Creek Dec. 1–4 Glacial Park and Lost Valley Visitor Center Also Oct. 1–Jan. 15 Silver Creek: East Trail Loop (South of Behan Road by the Prairieview Education Center); Elizabeth Lake: West Loop This is the fourteenth year of the District’s program that includes archery and firearm hunting. Under the
philosophies of the program, the Conservation District supports hunting practiced in a legal, responsible, safe and ethical manner. Regulated hunting is the utilization of a renewable resource and fits within the definition and framework of conservation. “Safety is the top priority of the hunting program. The highest standards of safety are demanded from all participants and staff involved in the program,” said Brad Woodson, Restoration Ecologist and Program Coordinator. “Only ecologically, self-sustaining wildlife populations are included in the scope of the Program. The definition of ‘ecologically self-sustaining’ is those populations naturally found in viable numbers on District sites.” Residents should also be aware that hunting may also be occurring on private property. While out hiking: Wear Blaze Orange as a Precaution. Avoid white, blacks, browns, earth-toned greens and animal-colored clothing. Choose colors that stand out, like red, orange or green. Blaze orange vests and hats are advisable. For more information, visit www. MCCDistrict.org or call the Conservation District at (815) 338-6223.
our goods. There was pizza crust, tomato sauce and mozzarella, but no sausage. We looked in the backseat of the car, thinking it had fallen out of the bag, but the vehicle was sausage-less. As was our fridge, pantry, countertops and cupboards. Somehow, we’d lost our sausage. We’ll never know for sure, but we must have left it in the cart in the parking lot, making us victims – or perhaps perpetrators – of abandoned sausage syndrome. I’m sure some cart attendant got a good laugh out of that one. Fast-forward seven days to our weekly grocery store date. This time dinner plans included guacamole, which necessitated a trip to the produce department. We squeezed the avocadoes with competence and enthusiasm to find the perfect one – not too ripe, not too hard. Then, we followed the regular routine. Pay for food. Exit store. Return home. This time we were careful to check the cart to confirm it was void of any food products before returning it to the cart corral. We were in the middle of dinner prep when we discovered our deficiency. I was assembling the ingredients needed to stir together my world famous guacamole when I encountered the glitch. The avocado had gone AWOL. We emptied the fridge. We searched the car. We scanned the counters and the cupboards and came up with a catchy phrase to describe our situation: “Holy moly there’ll be no guacamole.” Sometimes, it’s better to laugh at your shortcomings. It takes your mind off the pitifulness (and guacamole-less-ness) of your predicament. We questioned the usual suspects, but none of our sons would admit to eating an entire avocado. For once, I believed them. We ate our meal with salsa, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce, but without a lick of guac. The avocado had, appar-

ently, grown legs and walked, leaving us green with avocado envy. Or not. Because of the Italian sausage debacle, I knew we hadn’t left the avocado in the cart. We may be absentminded, but we learn from our mistakes. That cart was empty when we exited the parking lot. I’d swear to it (if I swore). And then, damn, it hit me. The avocado had to be somewhere in the house. I set out to find that thickskinned, fat-laden berry. I was on a mission. A mission of failure. It was actually my husband who did the eventual finding – and he wasn’t even looking. He was replacing the roll of paper towels. The new roll, which we’d bought on that same, fateful, gone-missing avocado day, was still in the plastic grocery store bag, which contained not only the paper towels, but also our long-lost avocado. Luckily the fruit wasn’t overripe and was still in prime form for guacamole greatness. I stirred a bowlful together, and it’s in the fridge right now. There’s only one problem. We are out of tortilla chips for dipping, so we’ll have to make a trip to the store to buy some. I just hope we can manage to make it home without losing them somewhere along the way. Environmental Defenders making a difference
SUBMITTED PHOTO McHenry County News
On Saturday, Oct. 15, 15 members of the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County worked to “make a difference” for monarchs and other pollinators by helping with restoration efforts at two roadside prairies - the O’Brien Road Prairie near Harvard and the Triangle Prairie in Woodstock. Pictured are Randy Schietzelt, Tom and Graham Ellinghausen, Joe and Peg Dalieden, and Annette Sather, working to cut out invasives. They were joined in their efforts by Tom Von Geldern, Cindy Skrukrud, Jim Anderson, Avis Fischer, Svetlana Taylor, and Nancy Schietzelt. Founded in 1970, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is a citizen organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the environment. The group provides community residents with educational programs and volunteer action on pollution prevention, sustainable land use and energy and natural resource conservation.
