Operation Christmas Child T

By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

he deadline for participating in this international event is coming up on the week of November 16-23, 2015, so anyone who wants to send a gift-filled shoe box to a young child still has a couple of weeks to go shopping. Jeff and Julie Gibbs are long-time volunteers for Operation Christmas Child. “Operation Christmas Child is a way to bless children in third-world countries – kids who have never received a gift before,” Jeff Gibbs tells me. “We have been volunteers for 20 years.” Operation Christmas Child starts in 1990 when a father of four “sees the horror of abandoned children in Romanian orphanages and asks friends to help fill a truck with toys and drive it to Romania.” This request resulted in an entire convoy of trucks filled with toys heading to Romania along with 17 volunteers. This overwhelming response, which included the first giftfilled shoe boxes, has been continued every year since. In 1992, convoys of trucks and filled cargo planes reach Albania, Belarus, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Serbia and Romania. In 2012, “Operation Christmas Child reaches the amazing milestone of delivering over 100 million gift-filled shoe boxes in 23 years!”

Operation Christmas Child also sends aid throughout the year to areas around the world. For example, in 1994, OCC sent medical aid to Rwanda in response to the genocide. In 2001, “shoe boxes, aid and ‘tent boxes’ are distributed to Afghan refugees.” Soccer camps and summer camps have spread across Asia and water projects have been launched in Africa. Celebrities such as Mr. T, Donny Osmond, Michael Jackson and the Allessi twins, among others, have been involved over the years. “It’s a good way to teach children about blessing others who might not even have a toothbrush,” Julie Gibbs says. “It started out of garages and we still get to do it out of our garage.” The Gibbs’ house in Algonquin is one of the local drop-off locations for Operation Christmas Child. “The goal this year is 9 million and it is still just a drop in the bucket,” Jeff Gibbs tells me. If you would like to join in and give a gift-filled shoe box this year, here are the guidelines OCC offers: Use an empty cardboard or plastic shoebox, but leave it unsealed for checking by customs. It may or may not be wrapped. Decide whether your gift is for a boy or girl, aged 2-4; 5-9; or 10-14 Fill with quality gifts that

Marengo High School implements new ‘wi-fi’ service By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

MARENGO — After a trial run on one single bus of the school’s fleet in the 2014-2015 school year, Marengo Community High School District 154 has become the first school in northern Illinois to implement wireless internet access on school buses. Whether students are commuting to or from school, on the bus for a field trip, or in transit for sports, they will be able to access the school’s wireless internet. The program, called “Wi-Fi on the fly,” is the first of what may be many expansions on the technology department within the school. In recent years, District 154 has gone digital, providing each student with a laptop exclusively for school use during their educational career at MCHS. The school invested significant time and resources into developing the Digital Learning Environment Program that encompasses these tools. Last year, the wi-fi was placed on a single bus within the fleet to test feasibility for the program. Now, with the assistance of the local MASEF, or Marengo Area Education Foundation,

all seven of the buses in District 154’s fleet have been equipped with the necessary equipment. According to the school, the cost for each bus to offer this service is approximately $1,200 per unit. By implementing the wireless accessibility, students who spend long periods traveling by bus will be able to accomplish school tasks such as studying and homework with less difficulty. The transit time can now be used to accomplish school activities instead of potentially wasted waiting to arrive home or to another destination. This extra time should prove exceptionally beneficial for student athletes who are on busses more often than their peers. Service is not limited to use onboard either. The wireless access can also be used while students are at other schools within a certain proximity to the bus. At Marengo High School itself, wireless access is spread throughout the school grounds in addition to in the building. The service is 4G LTE capable, meaning it provides the latest and potentially fastest delivery across the network for students to accomplish as much as they can with minimal delays.

With Halloween falling on the weekend this year, McHenry County towns are celebrating trick-ortreat hours on the holiday itself. In addition to the holiday staples such as decorations, haunted houses, and carved pumpkins, trick-or-treating is one of the most popular celebrations of the ghastly event. Children and their adult counterparts roam our streets in their spooky costumes to get more candy than they can stomach! Take a peek at this year’s Trick-or-Treat guide in McHenry County for scheduled times in your area.

Conservation District’s Harvest Gathering of 1858 Step back in time to the 1850s at McHenry County Conservation District’s Harvest Gathering of 1858 on Sunday, November 8 from Noon to 4 p.m. at PowersWalker House Historic Landmark in Glacial Park, Rt. 31 & Harts Rd. in Ringwood. Join costumed re-enactors as they share how early settlers harvested, processed and used corn and other natural fibers in their everyday lives. See examples of heritage vegetables in all sizes and colors. Try your hand at shelling corn off the cob and grinding it into flour with a hand crank, or making your own corn husk doll or yarn doll to take home. Witness other harvest activities such as making candles for winter, creating bobbin lace or spinning and tatting. There will also be a weapons demonstration of the era by a mounted Cavalry sergeant and a surveyor showing how land boundaries were defined prior to today’s GPS technology. Be sure to follow the smells of bread baking in the wood-burning cook stove inside and take the opportunity to tour inside the historic farmhouse, which is open to the public only a few times a year. “There are always changes to the house with the on-going restoration,” says Gail Brown, volunteer restoration coordinator, “If you haven’t seen the interior of the summer kitchen lately, now is your chance to see what ‘new’ old artifacts are around and what changes we have made.” The Program is free and registration is not required for this drop-in event. For more information contact Prairieview Education Center at (815) 479-5779 or www.MCCDistrict.org.

s I wander along the country roads of the 2015 Autumn Drive event of Oct. 16-18, I discover several places which are hosting several vendor booths and even live entertainment. The Autumn Drive features antiques, produce, arts and crafts along 26 separate locations. Cody’s Farm Fresh Vegetables at 19502 River Road, Marengo, is listed at #19. It hosts several booths and features music by Suzy. www. suzymusic.net. Prairie Sky Photos by Anne Eickstadt Crystal’s sister-in-law, Kim, and sister, Colleen Edwards, Orchard at 4914 North Union Road, Union, #22 hosts more mind her booth on the Autumn Drive. than one vendor booth and offers the timeless music of Bonnie & the Bills. They can be found on Facebook at Bonnie & the Bills. A Bit of Everything, #8, located at 16108 Garden Valley Road, Woodstock, is another such place hosting small businesses both inside and out. One booth here totally caught my eye. Crystal’s Canine Designs is displaying dog collars, leashes and potty bells in unique and fresh designs. “I rescued my human” reads one leash. A collar sports minions from the “Despicable Me” movies.

“Crystal started making dog collars a couple of months ago,” Colleen Edwards, Crystal’s sister, says. “She does a lot of custom orders. She works for a vet. She has rescued three dogs for herself.” This would explain how Crystal Schlossberg has identified a markt for unique, personalized dog accessories for any occasion. “She does collars for every season and every size dog,” Crystal’s sister-in-law, Kim, tells me. “She makes leashes, collars and potty bells.” Dogs do not have to wear a costume in order to be stylish anymore. “Here come the sports team collars!” Crystal’s Canine Designs Facebook page tells us. “Will have Blackhawks, Bears, Packers, Cubs, White Sox and Bulls. Have a different team you support? Contact me about a custom order.” The prices I see listed in the booth range from $10 to $17 per collar, leash or bell, so these stylish items for your canine companions are extremely affordable. You can visit Crystal’s Canine Designs on Facebook to get an idea of what this budding business can do to help your unique personality show as you promenade down the street or in the park with your four-footed pals.

Above: Leashes from Crystal’s Canine Design can express your unique personality when you venture outside with your four-footed friends. Above right: These dog collars come in everything except plain colors.

Crystal Lake South bleacher teardown begins By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

CRYSTAL LAKE — The daunting bleachers that have plagued the neighbors in the community surrounding Crystal Lake South High School for over two years have begun to be removed. After the District 155 signed off on a new design concept Tues Oct. 20, removal of bleacher electricity began on Weds Oct. 21. The demolition bid process began nearly 11 months ago after the McHenry County court ruled the bleach-

ers were in extreme violation of city building and zoning codes. Nothing had moved forward in the bleacher removal from that point until this month following the Illinois Supreme Court upholding said ruling. The new design selected by District 155 officials includes leaving the lower nine rows of the west side bleachers intact and relocating both the press box and home crowd bleachers to the east end, opposite of neighboring properties. According to preliminary

plans, complete dismantling could begin before the end of October. Total removal will take approximately six weeks to complete. If the predicted timeline remains intact, the demolition of the problematic structure will be completed before Christmas. The initial ruling from Judge Michael Chmiel who presided over the case called for complete removal, but the district is hoping to compromise by reducing the structure so the build out will not have been a

Autumn Drive

removal process, the District will likely file zoning requests as quickly as possible to move forward. If requests are filed in November and lack any serious modifications, reconstruction for the proposed changes would be feasible in the first quarter of 2016. Current proposal calls for just over 3,250 seats in total, a reduced amount in comparison to the existing structure, and is projected to cost an additional $1.5 million. The original construction in August 2013 cost over $1.2.

ody’s Farm is well known for the tasty vegetables which are sold at farm stands in McHenry County. What is not so wellknown is that Cody’s Farm now includes an unusual apple orchard. Cody’s Orchard has been planted using the “Tall Spindle System” which has been undergoing research for 50 years and is advocated by horticulturists at Cornell University. From a distance, the orchard looks surprisingly like a vineyard with trees planted in rows along a three-wire trellis. The thin tree trunks or ‘spindles’ resemble thick vines. The branches are spread along, and supported by, the wires of the trellis. “The tall, thin tree needs support, or when it is fully leafed out it may break in the wind,” Robinson of Cornell University says. The trees will reach a height of about ten feet and will produce fruit within three years. “In a Tall Spindle orchard you can pick fruit very quickly,” Darryl Bowen of Cody’s Farm tells me. Last year’s trees have apples. The Gold Rush trees planted in 2015 already have apples.” This trait is very helpful since these orchards can have a density of

Cody Purdom has been selling fresh vegetables since 1992. He has recently added an apple orchard to the already wide variety of produce he grows.

838-1452 trees per acre. The initial expense of the many trees is pretty high. “It’s the most expensive orchard to plant,” Bowen says. Rows of Ida Red, Cameo, Fuji, Jonathon and Golden Delicious apples planted in 2013 are fruiting vigorously. So are the rows of Blondee, Gala and Honeycrisp apples planted in 2012. In fact, all of the rows of apple trees at Cody’s are bearing lusciouslooking fruit. As with all young orchards, the trees need protection from

the wildlife. “The deer like to bed down in the back corner where they have a clear view and can see everyone coming,” Bowen tells me. “The wild turkeys peck everything and the rabbits chew the bark.” For those in the know, this new U-Pick orchard is a welcome addition to Cody’s Farm Pumpkin Festival this year. You can pick your own apples, take a free hayride down to the pumpkin patch and get lost in the 5 acre corn maze. The kids can visit the Rabbit Village, race along the

peddle tractor track and enjoy the playground and sand box. Did I mention the pumpkin launcher? As always, Cody’s Farm offers fresh vegetables and recipes to make the tongue dance and the tummy happy. Plus apple cider and cider donuts are available. “It [Cody’s Farm] is a working farm. It is truly a diversified farm,” Bowen says. “It has beef cattle field corn and soybeans besides vegetables. I don’t think anyone else can offer that.” “We work about 250 acres,” Cody Purdom tells me. He began selling sweet corn with

his grandmother in 1992. Cody and his father installed a permanent farm stand in 1999. Today Cody’s Farm Fresh Vegetables are being sold in three other farm stand locations as well at Wayne’s Meat Market in Marengo, The Freeze in Crystal Lake and Bohn’s Ace Hardware in Woodstock. Further information on Cody’s Farm & Orchard as well as upcoming events can be found online at www. codysfarm.com Or you can visit their Facebook page at Cody’s Farm Fresh Vegetables.
