‘You are invited to an intimate dinner at a scenic out-of-the-way place. Dinner will be followed by a stroll through the woods with the ever-changing colors of fall and by musical entertainment by a campfire.’ Is how the invitation to this event could have been written. The location for the Friday, September 23, event is the Pleasant Valley Conservation Area on Pleasant Valley Road in Woodstock. The host is the McHenry County Conservation District in the persons of Guides Andy Talley and Sam Shaw. Sam checked in the pre-registered guests at the shelter at the end of a short path from
the parking area. A dozen people are here for the Sunset Soiree and BBQ. Dinner is from BBQ King Smokehouse in Woodstock. Then Andy leads us on a twilight stroll through a canyon of prairie grasses. He identifies several of the plants such as Turkey Foot and Blue Stem grasses, Side Oat Grama [Old English word for ‘grass’], Bottle Gentian and Coneflowers. A Great Horned Owl can be heard nearby. “I’ve been with the McHenry County Conservation District for 18 years,” he says. “This is one of my favorite sites. IN our efforts at prairie restoration, we have planted prairie grasses and flowers even along short paths and in the parking lot islands.” As the evening stroll continues, the prairie
ecosystem with its open areas and tall grasses gives way to a savanna ecosystem with mature trees providing shady areas without much undergrowth. “This is where woods and prairie come together.” The stroll ends at a meadow containing a bonfire. A pair of musicians with guitars await the guests to continue the evening with melody and song in the great outdoors. The Pleasant Valley Conservation Area has had a varied history. In the 1800s, Irish immigrants settled the area. In 1952, the land was purchased by the Chicago Congregational Union and turned into a summer camp for inner-city youth. Thousands of children enjoyed the ‘wilds’ of McHenry County over the course of 46
years. The McHenry County Conservation District acquired the land and, in 1997, began restoration efforts. “The buildings originally on the site were in very poor condition. Vandals destroyed them before the Conservation District made a decision as to whether of not to keep them,” Andy says. Today the site contains not only an oak savanna and prairie ecosystems, it also holds a Grade A stream and pond stocked with bluegill and a virgin wetlands area. It is home to many species of animals and birds. More information about the site, the McHenry County Conservation District and upcoming events can be found online at www.mccdistrict.org.
District 154 hallway policy being reviewed
By Samantha Fetzner REPORTER
After causing an uproar with parents and students alike, the Marengo High School hallway escort arrangement is already expected to disappear by the second half of the school year. After struggling with students taking advantage of the prior ‘emergency pass’ system that the school used to use, the new school year began with students being required to have a member of the staff escort them outside the classroom in the event they needed to leave while that class was in session. During the 2015-2016 school year the students accumulated over 1,150 tardies. The enrollment at the school was less than 750 students during the course of the year. The school has reacted to the dissatisfaction regarding the policy by
having a student advisory committee review it and determine alternative options for the policy. The immediate reaction from the community caused a petition to circulate that exceeded 600 signatures before being brought to the school Board meeting on Sept 12. Parents, children, and concerned community members took to websites like Facebook to display their feelings toward the policy, citing that they felt it was unreasonable. The school has not taken those concerns lightly. Since the policy began, the school superintendent has noted that there have been less class absences during academic courses. Students are more often requesting to leave class during study hall than anything else. In the course of their day, Marengo High School students have five minutes in between each of their classes
that the school feels is adequate for both the travel between classrooms as well as bathroom stops or locker visits if necessary. The student advisory committee’s suggestions will be given to the school board for their review. The
two groups will collaborate to bring a more agreeable solution to the table. At this time, the school believes the ultimate change come second semester will be the use of a hallway monitor or monitor(s) to keep things in order while classes are in session.

By giving the advisory committee a chance to provide input, it gives the student body a better voice in their daily school lives. When the advisory committee and school board will discuss the alternative options has not yet been determined.

Science facility coming to MCC REPORTER
After receiving a massive donation, McHenry County College announced in late September that the college will be expanding and adding a separate science building to the campus. The building, which will be called the Liebman Science Center, is planned to be over 31,500 square feet with two stories of space including numerous labs, a lecture hall, student resource center, a planetarium, and preparation rooms. The name comes from the $5 million donor, Charles Liebman, and his family. The Liebman family is a long-time supporter of the college and the Friends of MCC Foundation. The project will cost $16.8 million in total. With the donation, construction could begin as quickly as next year. The family announced their pledged contribution on Thurs. Sept 22 and the college put the ball in motion to begin the center the following day. This building will focus solely on science but will ultimately provide a better environment for the entire student body at MCC. Numerous non-
science focused degrees still require graduates to complete at least one lab class for their course of study. The remainder of the funding for the project will come from the school’s general fund and other fundraising activities held by the school. The science programs at the college will be state of the art and better equipped for more advancements once the building is operational. The college offers a wide variety of courses in the science field ranging from earth science to chemistry, physics, plant science and even engineering courses. The building will be located on the East end of the main campus adjacent to building E. Currently science classes are spread throughout the campus. The additional space will give them a dedicated area for all items needed in the classes as well as ANNE EICKSTADT PHOTOS McHenry County News shared space, making it easier for Nancy Schietzelt, President of the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is helping raise funds instructors to be prepared for their to pay recycle fees and continue to protect our local environment. students from lab to lab. Books, books and more books. Thousands of books fill the room for the Fall Book Sale held by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. “Our book sale opened to the public on Saturday, September 23,” says Defenders president Nancy Schietzelt. “We estimate there are about 10,000 books here. Most of the books came from the Lake Forest Library. They had been donated to the library.” “We are having the book sale for a fundraiser and to urge people to recycle – reduce, reuse, recycle,” she says. “The Defenders work to collect and recycle materials which are not collected in curbside recycling and which would be harmful to the environment if put in a landfill. It costs us to recycle these items and therefore we request monetary assistance.” “In July of 2016, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County reluctantly ended their Styrofoam recycling program and closed their many drop-off sites. The increased popularity of the program resulted in rising costs due to greater and greater quantities of collected material. Additionally, the Defenders were limited in the number of responsible recyclers that would accept the material.” “We are trying to get funding to start recycling Styrofoam again,” Nancy tells me. “We have also taken over the work of caring for two roadside prairie areas. We have started a

campaign to get companies to stop using coal tar sealant on their parking lots.” “Our volunteers are fantastic. There are about seventy volunteers helping with the book sale. Bag sales will start on Thursday, October 6,” Nancy continues. “The bag sale will run through October 8. Each bag of books will cost $5.00. We will supply the grocery bags.” The Defenders’ book sale is being held at the Algonquin Township Road District garage at 3702 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. It is right next to The Hollows Conservation Area. “Algonquin Township is a member of the Environmental Defenders. They allow us to use their building for our book sale. They also allow other non-profit organizations to use the building as well.” Their monthly recycle drives collect items that are not picked up at the curb. Items that they accept

are: Fluorescent tubes; batteries; clean clothing and shoes; packing peanuts (but no other Styrofoam at this time); re-usable bubble wrap; electronics such as televisions, computers, phones, printers, electronic toys, microwaves; VHS and cassette tapes, DVDs and CDs; aluminum cans. It costs the Defenders to recycle a number of these items, so they request a donation to handle: fluorescent tubes, batteries, televisions and computer monitors. The Environmental Defenders recycling drive is usually on the second Saturday of each month. It is located at different sites, often in Woodstock or McHenry but they are adding new sites to their schedule. Music and laughter at Huntley Fall Fest By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT
Diecke Park lit up the weekend with music and laughter as the site of the Huntley Fall Fest on September 23 – 25, 2016. Featuring a carnival, live bands, scarecrow making contest, craft show, tethered hot air balloon rides and more, the parking and admission are free. “We try to make this a big family event,” says Sean Cratty, festival committee treasurer. “Except for the carnival rides, beer and food, we try not to charge a fee so that everyone can come.” “In 2006, it used to be the town picnic. Now, it is a three-day event. The festival committee allots the proceeds back to the community. Last year, funds were donated to the food pantry, sports clubs, the Willow Creek Church who had volunteers working at the festival, and the Oddfellows who provided security. They are great at security.” “I’ve done this for the last five years. I really enjoy it,” he continues. “Every year we add one or two things. We have a game trail for kids, a kids’ stage with a K-9 show, a magician and a trackless train. The model train clubs have taken over the entire gym this year. We try to keep the food vendors local. Most of them are from Huntley although ‘The Texan Bar-B-Q’ is from Algonquin and ‘Plum Garden’ is from McHenry. The festival also has crafters and a 300 plus car show.”
The carnival is set up next to Stingray Bay in Diecke Park. Next to it, closer to Route 47, are the craft booths and children’s activities. Bales of straw are resting under a canopy, awaiting the scarecrow building contest. A large stage is set up for the live bands. The empty area in front of it is filling with lawn chairs brought in by guests who are eager for the show. On Saturday evening, is a fireworks display. The space in front of the gymnasium is full of food vendors and a tent sheltering multiple tables separates the food vendors from the audience for the live show. Visitors must walk past the food vendors in order to reach the gym. The Huntley Area Public Library is running a book sale indoors and several model train clubs are set up. Howard Thorson, president of the LGB Model Railroad Club of Chicago, tells me, “Our layouts can get up to 40 x 70 feet depending on how much room we have to set up.” This particular display in the gym is 40 x 60 feet. Other model train clubs have chosen table top layouts for their displays. One club has a circus with a train, big top tent and circus animals Bella Cain plays on the big stage at the Huntley Fall Fest. as well. All of this is for the entertainment and enjoyment of the Huntley Fall Fest guests. Further information about this fun event can be found online at www.huntleyfallfest.com.

Empty nest time quickly approaching
Most of my friends are doing it. I’ve always been a little stunted so I’m not quite there yet. It will come soon enough. The next stage. From what I can tell, it’s one of rediscovery, independence and running to the store together for milk. (Because you can.) I still have kids at home. I stretched this whole parenthood thing out about as far as you can stretch it. My friends who were more streamlined with their timelines are finding themselves with spare bedrooms, full refrigerators and empty nests. And, for the most part, they are enjoying it. This gives me hope for my own

when the one we called “Rooster” used to rouse us an hour before sunrise by calling out for a sippy cup of strawberry milk. Rooster has become a hibernator and currently prefers sleep over early morning anything. Sippy cups and cartoons and strawberry milk in bed have become things of the past. For our part, my husband and I try to sleep in, but rarely make it more than an hour past our regular waking time. Since our offspring are all capable of getting up and finding their own breakfast (or lunch, given their sleep habits) we experience the freedom of an unencumbered day. The hours stretch out enticingly in front of us. What shall we do? Where shall we go? One of our current favorite Saturday morning destinations is the home improvement store where we walk the aisles and discuss home improvement possibilities. Afterward, we’ll stop at the fleet supply store to peruse the
various implements and other necessities we probably won’t ever need. Sometimes they have fuzzy little baby ducks and chicks there in large metal tubs. We talk about the logistics of raising chickens and the benefits of having access to an infinite supply of fresh eggs. Then, if we need milk or bread or just want to get something fun for dinner, we’ll head to the grocery store. We linger in the meat section. Because we can. All these everyday activities, for now, feel luxurious. Out of necessity, we used to split our time and attention. One ran errands while the other watched the brood. We spent so many years dividing and conquering and fighting just to keep the toilets flushed and the cap on the toothpaste that going to the home improvement store (together) for something as simple as a new power tool feels almost like a date. What can I say? It doesn’t take much to impress me. Perhaps in time we will progress
to activities even more date-like: going out to lunch, a trip to the mall or maybe even a movie (matinee, no popcorn). For now, though, I’m satisfied with errands. And time spent together. Enjoying the small things. And feeling glad that we do. Looking forward to the future. Learning to sleep in on Saturday mornings. In this, the nearly next stage. There will be others, of course. Stages, that is. And perhaps there may even come a time when we are ready to be responsible again for tiny beings that rely on us for sustenance and daily care. A stage when we choose to have a nest that is no longer empty – but full. With baby chicks. But no roosters. Letting my hair go gray has been a freeing experience When I let my hair go gray, it was a big deal. I had my assistant, Dreamboat Annie, take photos of my hair every week so we could track the progression. I planned to blog about it regularly and bought the domain name couragetogogray.com. The one blog post I did write got a huge response. There was clamor for more. But my hair turned so fast and I got so busy that I let that effort go. I am not looking to start any new project at the moment, but I do want to encourage anyone who is considering going au naturel to go for it. It is so easy! I’m all about ease right now. My hair is super short (easy) and I never again have to be concerned if my roots are showing. That makes life easy. It fascinates me all the compliments I get and all the “I wish I could let my hair go natural but I’m just not ready”. I get it, I do. It took me a long time. But it is so freeing! I encourage you to reconsider. Let’s tweak that sentence a bit: “I wish I could let myself be natural, but I’m just not ready.”
By
KELLY SIMMONS Columnist
That is the heart of the issue. We have a hard time letting ourselves be our natural version of us. We are able to alter so much of our appearance now that if we had an easy way to make ourselves taller or shorter, I know many people would be on board. Why do we have such a hard time accepting ourselves as is? A recent gathering of high school friends was enlightening in that I was the only one who was gray. I don’t even think about my hair anymore. I am so used to it. People who have not seen me a while notice and comment, and it feels good to feel good in my choice. That is all that matters. It is a choice. If you do not want to go gray, super.
Feel good in your choice. If you want to, but fear the backlash of society, no worries, you will be embraced by your fellow woman, and even get admiring glances from your fellow man. Gray can be sexy women and men. We all know that that gray haired fellas are dashing. Gray ladies can be stunning too. There are not many to point out, so that is a little sad. Women still feel the pressure. It is an individual choice. I fretted and feared how it would look. I love my gray. It is my wish for you to say, “I love my hair color,” no matter what shade it is. If you truly desire to go gray, but need a confidence boost, drop me a line. If you do not want to, then own that. Don’t say, “I wish I could, but I’m not as bold as you.” That is still what gets me. Hair color should not require courage. Your head. Your hair. Your life. You get to choose. I used to love medium reddish brown, 5RB, hair. Now, I love natural. I love easy. And I love you, no matter what your hair color.

Great Lakes Basin railroad pulling out of Boone County By Bob Balgemann REPORTER
Those who didn’t want the proposed Great Lakes Basin Transportation (GLBT) railroad to come through Boone County probably don’t have that to worry about anymore. On Sept. 20, the company submitted a new route to the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) that doesn’t include Boone County. It did so in response to an environmental analysis received from the board, which will make the final decision on the proposed rail bypass around the city of Chicago. In addition, the GLBT reviewed and analyzed comments from public and governmental entities that were made during the comment period, which followed the series of scoping meetings held along the proposed route last summer. Frank Patton, chief executive officer of the company, also said in an email that the revision came as a result of “strong requests from the

Rockford political/economic development folks.” In some cases, the company was able to provide alternative routes to avoid constraints identified during the scoping process. One of those alternatives, according to company spokesman Mike Blaszak, eliminated Boone County. The new preferred route includes modified alignments around Westville, Tenn., Kingsbury and Lowell, Ind., Rockford, Winnebago County, Rock County, and Emerald Grove, Wis. “The preferred route also eliminates any rail line through Boone County, Ill.,” a statement released by GLBT said. An interactive map of the new preferred route has been posted on the company’s website. Boone County recently sent both a resolution and letter to the STB, stating it joined the community in opposing a portion of the 178-mile route going through the Capron and Garden Prairie areas. The letter was divided into parts

to mirror what had been part of the scoping process. It contained a variety of concerns in the areas of land use, transportation systems, safety, biological, water, geological and soils, noise, vibration, and socioeconomics. County board Chairman Bob Walberg said Sept. 29 that the railroad company’s decision had given locals some relief, so they don’t have to worry about it for the next two or three years. That’s how long he anticipated it would take for the STB to make a final decision on the proposal. In reality, he said it could be another three or four years before a decision is made.
Board officials said the Great Lakes Basin’s project brought in the largest volume of comments they ever received. In addition, this country will elect a new president Nov. 8 and then, sometime in 2017, new members of the STB will be appointed. “I hope the board will go along with it,” he said of the company’s revised route. Apparently some of those who opposed the Boone County route now plan to help people in other areas, who don’t want it in their backyards, either. “You have to be careful that they [Great Lakes Basin] don’t come back here,” the chairman said.
Screening prevention is key for workers By Kathi Bouland
SWEDISHAMERICAN BREAST HEALTH NURSE NAVIGATOR
As a Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator for SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, I would like to express some of my thoughts on screening and prevention for the working woman and man. Yes, men can get breast cancer and statistics tell us less than one percent of all breast cancers happen to men. We here at SwedishAmerican diagnose one to three men a year. In addition, one in eight women will have breast cancer in their lifetime. In our busy world, we often do no take time for ourselves and I cannot stress enough how important screening is in the fight against breast cancer. Prevention is the key to the cure. If we can catch breast cancer in its early stages, it can be cured. Everyone should know their lifetime risk. Ask yourself, does breast cancer run in my family? When a patient has a familial history of breast cancer, then that immediately puts them at a higher risk than the average individual. In addition to family risks, there are many other factors that can increase your risk. Just being a women and getting older is a risk. Lifestyle choices can increase your risk such as dietary choices, high fat vs. low fat, alcohol consumption in excess, smoking and obesity. An additional fact to digest is that almost three-fourths of all breast cancers are sporadic which means that you can have no family history and still get breast cancer. Some of the best advice I can give is be aware of your body inside and out. When you get out of the shower daily, look at your body in the mirror. Know what your breasts look like and if you see changes that are not your norm, seek a professional opinion from your family physician. I cannot express enough how many times I have had a pa-
tient tell me that redness, rash, or skin dimpling, has been there for some time. A dimpling of your breast skin is not normal, unless it has always been a part of your body structure. If you see a nipple that retracts, this too is not normal. One of the best places to do a breast self-exam is in the shower. Know the feel of your breasts and where your lumps or bumps are. There are many women that have fibrocystic disease and at specific times of their menstrual cycle will have additional swelling of these cystic areas, know this part of you. In our time and place, the advancement of technology in breast cancer detection is phenomenal. We have mammography that is now digital which helps the radiologist to better read your pictures. Along with digitization, we also have Tomosynthesis, which is used to create a three dimensional image of breast tissue for better examination, when recommended. At SwedishAmerican we offer whole-breast ultrasound that examines a dense breast tissue much closer. In your busy world, take the time to take care of you. I have seen delay of action in busy women and men and because of this, it can be a difference between life and death. This may seem simple but prevention is the key. SwedishAmerican offers walkin mammography Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere and our Stateline Clinic in Roscoe on Monday 9:00AM -3:00 PM and Tuesday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. SwedishAmerican’s Breast Health Center in the Renaissance Pavilion offers mammograms by appointment Monday through Saturday. Kathi Bouland is SwedishAmerican’s Breast Health Nurse Navigator.
