Farm Stroll a Hit!
By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
T
he Master gardeners of McHenry County developed their 1st Annual Farm Stroll with no idea how popular it would be. With only 5 hours to visit 11 farms, I had to be very selective which ones to choose so I picked farms located within a small area. Prairie Sky Orchard at 4914 North Union Road, Union, is so packed full of people that cars are jockeying for parking spaces and parking next to ditches. The owners and employees are so busy with regular customers and Farm Stroll visitors that I can’t even get close enough to ask questions. www. prairieskyorchard.com This is wonderful. The Farm Stroll is a huge success. Cherry Lane Farm at 18317 Garden Valley Road, Marengo, is next on my tour. It is owned by Trudi Temple, author of ‘Trudi’s Garden: The Story of Trudi Temple, Founder of Market Days’. Temple is a celebrated gardener, author and speaker. She came to the United States from Germany in 1963. “I am NOT a war bride,” she says. See FARM STROLL, Page 2

Scary characters can appear anywhere when you visit haunted houses during October’s Halloween fun events.
lain Henry Deadwood has invited his ‘unsightly’ relatives to party all night long in the park. To date, no wagonload of visitors has been able to cap-
ture Deadwood. “Visitors will travel through 17 haunting scenes witnessing the cause and effect of Henry Deadwood and his wild parties.” This event
McHenry Area JayCees Haunted House: at Knox Park Barn, 300 South Route 31, McHenry, IL. $10 Friday/ Saturday, $8 Thursday/Sunday. Hours: 7:30- “until the last victim crawls out.” In the dark of night, come the howls and snarls from the barn on the hill. This year the ghouls and creatures are especially excited because this year is their 30th year to get free! The McHenry Area Jaycees Haunted house has been running since 1985, in the same old barn, always looking for new victims to play with and torture. Since it’s a big year, we have changed the house slightly, from 12 rooms, to over 20! - See more at: http://www.mchenryareajaycees.org The Keep Haunted House, 11177 Huntley Road, Huntley, IL. $17 per See HALLOWEEN, Page 6

Temple has developed a sustainable farm with solar panels, wind turbines, vegetables, and pasture-fed cows. She sells branches from woody plants to the florist trade. I caught up with her in the ‘Salvage Hall’ which is built entirely from found or discarded materials. It currently displays some of her quilt collection. It is used for meetings of groups and small organizations which are catered. “I don’t advertise. They find me,” she says. “I am not online.” She makes useful and beautiful items from things that most people would walk right past. She created a gorgeous pair of chairs made from willow branches. “The only place I could put them [at that time] was with their backs to the door. So, I made a cage in back and put flowers in it when I was expecting company.” I ended my Farm Stroll with the Nichols Farm & Orchard at 23918 River Road, Marengo. Lloyd and Doreen Nichols began sustainable farming in 1978. Today their farm is 300 acres and grows over 1000 specialty fruits and vegetables for Chicago Farmers’ Markets, restaurants and CSA shareholders. They use geothermal power in their large greenhouse and recently built barn/office building. They utilize
solar and wind power on their farm as well. Curious about CSA, I checked out their brochure. “Subscribing to the Nichols Farm CSA [Community Supported Agriculture] is the very best way to experience everything grown at its peak flavor and freshness. As a shareholder, you are guaranteed a share of the most prized selections. Your weekly share, though vast in variety, is packed in reasonable quantities – you never get too much of any one item. It’s a marvelous way to celebrate the season’s bounty while expanding your culinary ‘palette’.” You also get a complimentary membership to www.localthyme.com, a service that supplies you with recipes and storage tips as well as discounts at all Nichols Farm & Orchard market stands during the growing season. Nichols Farm & Orchard can be found online at www.nicholsfarm.com I certainly enjoyed this Farm Stroll. I will have to watch for the next event by the McHenry County Master Gardeners at www.mchenrycfb.org, web. extension.illinois.edu/lm or on their Facebook page at McHenry County Farm Bureau.

National Alpaca Farm Days By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
The alpaca farms in McHenry County threw open their gates and invited visitors to check them out on Saturday and Sunday, September 26 – 27, during National Alpaca Farm Days. Jim and Jean Morgan of J4 Alpacas invited me to visit when I chatted with them during the 1st Annual Spring Fiber Fling at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock this year. The alpacas are smaller than a horse and their fleece is very soft. The guard dogs are vocal but there are strangers on the property and the dogs are just doing their job. The Morgans knew they wanted to become livestock owners long before it was possible for them to do so. Jim’s job with the Federal Drug Administration required them to move 10 times within 32 years. It was not until 1996 that they were able to settle down with any livestock. While in Chicago, they noticed an advertisement in a local magazine which described alpacas as being easy to raise and a ‘hug-
gable investment.’ After due research, travelling to several alpaca farms, discussing alpacas with the farm owners and getting to know the animals, the Morgans purchased their first alpaca. As we talk about the newborn alpaca babies, it is clear that a couple of loudly vocalizing alpacas are having a disagreement. “Just boys being boys,” Jean laughs, “jockeying for the alpha position. They will yell at each other for 8 minutes, then get winded. They’ll stand next to each other and eat.” The Morgans own a number of the 60 alpacas on the J4 farm. Most of the animals, however, are being boarded for owners nearby or as far away as the east coast. These owners may not have the time or facilities to care for the animals themselves or they may have invested in breeding stock for the tax benefits. Now in their 19th year, the Morgans provide high quality care for the alpacas. They have Anatolian Shepherd dogs to guard the animals from

The J4 Alpacas farm is located at 7711 North Valley Hill Road, Woodstock, Illinois, 60098. You can also visit their website at www.j4alpacas. com or their Facebook page. To add to the enjoyment of the day, The Scarf Connection with Erin and Steve Whalen are on hand to demonstrate the many things which can be done with alpaca fiber. Both Navy veterans, Erin and Steve are fiber art-
ists and enjoy working with alpaca fiber. Erin displays hats, scarves, gauntlets (for keeping your wrists warm) and felted wool figurines. “For felting, wool is better [than alpaca fiber] because you need it a little coarser, but alpaca fibers work well for hair,” Erin tells me. Steve enjoys creating alpaca fiber shawls and I loved learning how he does so. Alpaca fleece is as soft as cashmere and is warmer, lighter and stronger than wool. It comes in 16 natural shades which can be dyed in bright colors.

McHenry County reports first human case of West Nile Virus in 2015 McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) has confirmed its first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) of 2015, in person in their late 40’s from Algonquin. This individual is recovering at home after a brief hospitalization. As of September 25, the County has recorded eleven-mosquito batches positive for WNV and four birds have tested positive. In 2015, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), there have been 30 cases of human WNV with four deaths reported in the State. MCDH continues to urge residents to take precautions as the risk of mosquito-borne
WNV lasts until the first hard frost. Illness from West Nile Virus is usually mild and includes fever, headache and body aches, but serious illnesses, such as encephalitis, meningitis and death, are possible. Illness can occur 3-15 days after an infected mosquito bite. The disease can affect all ages, but persons 50 and older have the highest risk of severe disease. The mot effective way to prevent against becoming infected with WNV is to follow some basic steps: Limit your time outdoors during peak mosquito biting hours, which are from dusk to dawn.
When outside (evening and early morning), use repellent and protective clothing such as long-sleeves, long pants and socks. Spray clothes with repellent containing DEET for extra protection. Always follow label directions. Get rid of standing water around your home where mosquitoes will breed (bird baths, old tires, garbage cans, flower pot trays, wheelbarrows). Have tight-fitting screens on both windows and doors; replace screens with tears.
For more information on WNV, visit www.mcdh.info (Environmental Health) or call 815-334-4585.

McHenry County Historical Society schedules training UNION — The McHenry County Historical Society is hosting a docent training session at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the museum, 6422 Main St. You need not be a professional educator to participate. All you need is an interest in history and a willingness to share it with others. The society provides training, as well as a docent guide. Established in 1963, our members, staff and volunteers have 52-year track record rich in preservation, education, and entertainment contributions to McHenry County. We create learning experiences and events. We focus on local culture, organizational and family history. We collect and care for notable artifacts. We participate in the activities of like-minded organizations throughout McHenry County. You can help that effort by volunteering as a docent –t chaperoning students or visiting groups as they tour the 1843 Gannon log cabin, 1895 West Harmony School and the 1870 historical museum. Plus, you get to learn about
all those items you’ve wondered about for years! Those interested in attending should reserve a spot by calling the office at 815-923-2267. The one-room West Harmony school is available for a two-hour visit by McHenry County third- through fifth-graders. Students participate in a turn-of-the-century school day complete with lessons in arithmetic, reading, penmanship, grammar, history, and games at recess. Times are 9 to 11 am, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the fall and spring. A more expansive, two-hour tour is available Thursdays and Fridays that includes West Harmony School, the museum and the log cabin. Available times are from 9 to 11 a.m., 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. to noon. In both instances, schools are eligible for a $200 McHenry County Community Foundation grant to defray transportation costs. For more information visit www.mchenrycountyhistory.org.

Vintage Music for Sale By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
Renowned for the record-breaking prices his antique music auctions have earned, Randy Donley and Donley Auction Services are diving in again. On Saturday, October 17, Donley will present the Fall Vintage Music Sale. This exciting auction presents phonographs, music boxes, musical instruments, cylinder records and more. They come from three different estates, including some items from Oliver Berliner, the grandson of Emile Berliner, the inventor of the Berliner Gramophone in 1887. Berliner is known for his development of the disc record, microphone and telephone transmitter. He also helped develop rotary engines for the improvement of vertical flight. Along with his son, Henry, Berliner demonstrated a working helicopter for the U.S. Army on July 16, 1922. Along with Berliner’s machines, there are also records, parts, a Steinway player grand piano and much more. Donley says, “These machines are new to the market. They have been squirreled away in collections for the last 40 years. They have never been available for sale before. There is a huge selection of horns and phonographs range in price from $50 - $25,000.” In doing research, all models of the Reginaphone early coin-operated machines that are pictured online are stand-up models. This auction contains a rare, table model Regina Hexaphone (circa 1904) that plays six different cylinders. Another extremely rare coin-op machine is the 24 cylinder, Multiphone. It is the first coin-op in history to play 24 cylinders. The precursor of the jukebox,
this machine plays wax cylinders. You can insert a nickel and turn a hand-crank to choose which cylinder to play. It was manufactured by the Multiphonograph Company which operated from 1905 – 08. Also included in the Fall Vintage Music Sale is a large number of machines which will fit nicely into many collections and are wonderful for collectors who are just beginning to develop their collections. “We have a variety of Edison cylinder phonographs in all price ranges,” Donley tells me as he shows me tables full of vintage phonographs, horns, cylinder records, and musical instruments. We wend our way past stand-up phonographs, jukeboxes, radios and hand-carved cabinets. Many items are in prime condition, some in good shape and others need a bit of tender, loving care. Typical of estate auctions, items can come in any condition. To check out these vintage pieces created by some of America’s greatest inventors and kept safe over the years by savvy collectors, come to the viewing on Friday, October 16 from noon until 8 pm. The Fall Vintage Music Sale auction will be held on Saturday, October 17, beginning at 10 am. It will be held at 8512 South Union Road, Union, Illinois, 60180. Bids will also be accepted online at Photos by Anne Eickstadt Proxibid.
