McHenry County College opened its doors once again for the 9th Annual Green Living Expo on Saturday, November 5. They showed “the best in sustainable living.” They also offered the opportunity to win Blackhawk tickets or a weekend’s rental of a Nissan Leaf 100% electric car. Not only was admission to the show free but the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County were on hand near the building to run their monthly Recycle Drive at the event and take unwanted items off your hands. Today they were accepting batteries, fluorescent tubes, packing peanuts, re-usable bubble wrap, VHS and cassette tapes, CDs and DVDs. They were also accepting both small and large electronics such as household appliances, microwaves, televisions and computer monitors. Also outdoors, could be found a selection of Tesla electric cars with their owners, a Nissan Leaf electric car and the Northwestern University Solar Car Teams. They were joined by the Illini Eco Concept Team and the Illini SAE Team. “The Illini EcoConcept Team is a student run organization on the University of Illinois Engineering campus dedicated to designing and fabricating practical as well as energy efficient vehicles for the Shell Eco-marathon Urban Concept Competition.” “The collegiate chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the University of Illinois aims to provide its members with numerous educational, professional, and social opportunities related to vehicular design. The 4th Annual Holiday Spectacular Arts & Crafts Fair at Jacobs High School in Algonquin, is raising funds for the high school band, orchestra and other music groups. They always have something which captures my attention. Saturday, November 5, was no exception. One booth close to the concession stand is offering the cutest outfits for little girls. Once Upon A Time Dresses is relatively new to the craft fair scene. The Jacobs High School Holiday Spectacular is their second show. This business, run by Fairy Godmother Erin Booth, began with Erin’s daughter. “I make creative dresses and tutus for girls from newborn to eight years old,” she tells me. I have been doing this for about two years now.” “I started for my three year old daughter. She just began doing dance classes this year but she started twirling before she could walk. She started dancing on her own at the age of one and decided that she

wanted to be a ballerina.” “Now, I have never been a girlygirl, but I decided to start making ballerina clothes for her. Anytime she wants to wear a tutu, I think, ‘Why not?’ She wears tutus to dinner, to go shopping….” “I can now make dresses and tutus for birthdays, holidays, tea parties, any occasion. I can make anything their little hearts desire, any color, any style, any size. Because every girl deserves to be a princess.” “All the dresses are custom made. No two are ever alike. I also make custom accessories such as hair bows. I make tutus for all occasions and I ship everywhere.” Booth always comes away from these shows with special custom orders for her crew of fairy godmothers to create. It is a testament to her passion for making little girls happy that she will customize outfits for them. Green Friday Restoration Day set for Nov. 25 WINTER IS AROUND THE CORNER, ARE YOU READY?

The day after Thanksgiving may be a popular day for shoppers, but it’s an even better day for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. One way we can help each other get through these challenging times is to keep our dollars local. Here are three good reasons. Reason #1: Shopping locally saves you gas and wear and tear on your vehicle. Reason #2: When you spend your money locally, you support the businesses whose property taxes pay for our municipal services. Reason #3: Many of our youth programs are supported and sponsored by local businesses and if we don’t support them, they can’t support our kids. BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

She attended the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine in Racine, Wisconsin to obtain her degree. “We combine the best of the new with ancient modalities,” Jozwiak tells me. “When someone comes in, we actually listen to their pulse and talk with them. Then we will test hormone lev-

We do all these modern tests with modern practices.” Nature’s Balance Acupuncture & Wellness Center offers acupuncture and infrared therapies, massage and Delta Pulse [Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field] technology, herbal and nutritional therapies and Ion Cleanse Foot Baths. They utilize the Balance Method of acupuncture, which is not traditionally used in the United States. achieve long lasting relief 80% of the time. “Acupuncture is a system of health care based on the principle that tissues and organs need the proper supply of blood, oxygen, and nutrients in order to be healthy. In Oriental medicine, the twelve organs and the overall digestive tract produce and move all the blood and oxygen in the body.” “Physical, chemical, or emotional stresses can cause the blood to stagnate, resulting in a malfunction of the organs. The function and healing process of vital body parts are affected at this point. Once this takes place, extreme health problems can occur. If the condition goes untreated, the area starts to degenerate and symptoms appear. The body is now in a state of ‘dis-ease’.” “What began as a minor problem or discomfort may lead to irreparable damage. However, if detected early, organ malfunction as well as blood stagnation can respond well to Oriental medicine with an excellent chance for a complete and painless recovery.” Acupuncture is recognized and endorsed by both the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are effective in treating a very wide range of illnesses and diseases. “It’s very individualized,” says Jozwiak. “Every treatment is unique, depending on what’s going on with you at that point in time. Over the course of the ten years we have been in business, we have treated over three thousand people. We treat about sixty a week.” “We try to pull together the best of the best of treatments, both old and new. To me, that’s the value in bringing everything together under one roof.” Nature’s Balance Acupuncture & Wellness Center is located at 820 E. Terra Cotta Avenue, Suite 101, Crystal Lake, IL, 60014.
