n Saturday, November 7, 2015, the Woodstock Harley-Davidson dealership holds a dedication ceremony for its Veteran’s Memorial. The memorial is sited close to the over-sized American Flag which the H-D dealership dedicated earlier this year. The audience is packed with veterans for this event. The parking lot is full and cars are still arriving. This community supports our military and is ready to show it. At the proper moment, the bugler, Donald Rhodes, sounds the call and we are all welcomed to the ceremony. The Invocation is spoken and the staff of Harley-Davidson carries out the Flag and presents it to the military Color Guard. We sing the National Anthem and the Color Guard raises the flag on the flagpole. The wind this morning is causing the flag to wave proudly. The speeches are all very powerful and moving. Lance Corporal Tim Crabb, veteran, originated the idea for this memorial, “War takes a part of your soul. This site means so much for so many. My father is just one of many who have served, In order for that symbol of freedom [the

US flag] to be recognized by people around the world…” [it needs to be respected and defended as such.] It is respected by those around its base today [members of the military]. In their hands its base is solid. I extend our sincere gratitude to HarleyDavidson.” Veteran Dustin Jackson says, “We sometimes struggle with re-acclimation. You can question whether or not you are ever going to do something this important again. Do people even care? This shows that people do care.” The most touching part of today’s event is the POW*MIA Memorial Table Ceremony. The following is the basic script used for these ceremonies. There are variations in each ceremony. “Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention to the center of our gathering. You may have noticed the table set before you. It is filled with symbolism. I will explain. This table is set for our Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action – from all wars. They are not with us today. There are no chairs for no one will be sitting at this

Mistletoe Magic yearly event held for charity By Anne Eickstadt, Corresspondent
WOODSTOCK — Lines of people are waiting to enter the 31st Annual Mistletoe Magic Boutique and the Cake Walk across the hall at Grace Lutheran Church, Saturday morning, November
7. More people are constantly arriving in the minutes before the doors open This event is held yearly to raise money for local charities. “The church has put on a bazaar here every year. Members of the church make all the items, none of it is vendored,” Cathy Meyer, head of the chairing committee,

tells me. “We work on it all year now. We start in January or February with brainstorming to figure out what we are going to make. We divide it into departments and we organize the people who sew, woodcrafters, knitters, felters. The Gourmet Food section has rubs, canned garden produce, pasta and so on. One lady creates 18 inch doll clothes. The size of an American Girl doll. She gave us 140 this year.” That explains why people can’t wait to get in. One-of-a-kind, hand-crafted items make perfect gifts. You know that no one else will duplicate your gift for Christmas, birthdays or other special occasions. “We have a donation/raffle table. It involves other people in the community. We sold 800 tickets last year and made over $1000,” Meyer says. “We made $24,000 last year. We gave it to three local charities in the community. This year, the charities are Turning Point of McHenry County, the Wednesday site of PADS and the DAP- Direct Assistance Program.” “PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) - On the fourth Wednesday of each month from October through April
Grace members prepare and serve dinner to homeless people who are staying at the emergency shelter at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation church. Check the poster in the narthex for ways you can contribute to the meals.” PADS can be found on Facebook at McHenry County PADS non-profit organization. “Turning Point is a domestic violence agency with a mission to confront violence against women and children in McHenry County, Illinois.” www. mchenrycountyturningpoint.org “DIRECT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM —The Direct Assistance Program (DAP) is operated by the Woodstock Area Community Ministry. WACM strives to provide emergency assistance to those families who need it most. Because of the tremendous growing needs of the community, DAP has had to cut back on its services due to a shortage of funds. You can help by making a regular donation to DAP using the white pew envelope. WACM is jointly operated by 12 local congregations and organizations, including Grace.” www. wacmgroup.org

Continued from page 1 table. (In today’s ceremony, a member of the military carries in a wheel hat of that branch of the military.) Let us remember the United States Air Force Let us remember the United States Army Let us remember the United States Navy Let us remember the United States Marine Corps Let us remember the United States Coast Guard Let us remember the men and women Prisoners of War from all branches of Service that are too often forgotten. Let us remember them.. The tablecloth is black, symbolizing the grief we feel. Remember. The lone candle symbolizes the frailty of a prisoner alone, trying to stand up against his oppressors. Remember. The black ribbon on the candle reminds us of those who will not be coming home. Remember. The single rose reminds us of the loved ones and families of our comrades in arms who keep the faith and await their return. Remember. A slice of lemon is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate – if we do not bring them home. Remember. There is salt on the plate, symbolic of the family’s tears as they wait and remember The glasses are inverted. They cannot toast with us tonight – Maybe tomorrow, if we remember. The red, white and blue ribbon is tied to the flower vase
by a yellow ribbon that was worn by thousands who awaited their return. Remember. The faded picture on the table is a reminder that they are missed very much and are remembered by their families. Remember As we look upon this empty table, do not remember ghosts from the past, remember our comrades Remember those whom we depended upon in battle. They depend on us to bring them home. Remember our friends. They are the ones we love – who love life and freedom as we do. They will remember what we do. Please honor and remember them. (The Honor Guard executes a slow salute together. They hold it approximately 10 seconds after the music has ended. Afterwards, the members slowly order arms and the Members of the Kare-9 Military Ministry to veterans appeared at the memorial event. Honor Guard commander will call “POST” and the members will execute a Left Face and march out.” There are still 83,105 men and women who are still Missing In Action from World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Cold War, Iraq and other conflicts. We, the people they fought to protect, have a lot of work to do to bring them home again. If any school, organization or group would like to see the table ceremony or invite a veteran to speak, please contact Mary Kirkpatrick, Education Director of Rolling Thunder Illinois, Chapter 2 www.direducation@ rollingthunderil2.org

Franks’ Efforts to streamline Government recognized with Transformer Award MARENGO — State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, was honored as an inaugural recipient of the Transform Illinois Coalition’s State Government Transformer Award in recognition of his ongoing efforts to consolidate duplicative taxing bodies and demand greater accountability from all units of Illinois government. Franks joined DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, Carol Portman of the Taxpayer Federation of Illinois, and Lieutenant Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti at the Transform Illinois Coalition’s conference Monday to emphasize the need for independent thinking and bipartisan cooperation to address the challenges facing the state. “With the most units of local government of any state, the worst-funded pension systems in the country and enough former politicians in jail to fill their own cell block, Illinois is in desperate need of transformation,” Franks said. “I am truly honored to stand with Lieutenant Gov. The ghosts of Halloween past I write this the day after Halloween weekend. We attended two parties this month and were tickled at the effort people put into their costumes. Halloween has become a multi-billion dollar industry and I say it’s because we feel an innate need to return to a childlike spirit and playing dress up is fun! Halloween lets people explore their creativity and literally try on a new mask or a new identity for a day. At one party, my Prince and I were charming pirates. At the other we were from the roaring 20s. I had always wanted to be a flapper girl. Having a dress with the swingy fringe, a headdress with a feather, long black gloves and lots of bling is so my thing. Eating lots of candy can be fun too. I enjoy passing out treats to the neighborhood kids. We don’t have many at the current joy house and they loved (seriously) the bags of popcorn I handed out. I delighted in their cuteness and

politeness. My Prince and I recalled our youth and how our neighborhoods swarmed with kids running from block to block and street to street with pillowcases to hold all the sugary loot. Coming home at the end of the night and dumping out all the treats on the floor and surveying the bounteous booty was just as much fun as going from house to house. Some years, we emptied our bags at home and went back out. We had unending rows of houses to hit up in all directions. Finally at the end of the night, after a quick “safety” check from Mom and Dad (and giving Dad all the stuff I didn’t like), we would feast. My sister would count how
many items she got. I probably did too. I know I ate all my Tootsie Rolls first. Oh, nostalgia. Now if I eat a Tootsie Roll, I wonder how I used to be so in love with the hard plastic chews, but I was. Halloween fell out of vogue during my high school years and then returned again in college with parties and costumes. And beer. Then when I became a mommy, getting my boys decked in their store-bought Power Ranger costumes made them happy. Carving pumpkins was fun. (There’s that word again.) Halloween’s “meaning” or history has long faded to black in the US and the focus is simply on simple fun. Candy, decorations, costumes. Americans just want an excuse to play. (We don’t need one, friends.) Of the $7 billion spent on Halloween, $350 MILLION is on costumes for pets. It doesn’t matter if kids are in the house or not, Halloween is now for adults and whoever we can dress up. We Americans like to dress up
our houses too. I don’t go for the inflatables, but some décor is creative and lovely. I’m thinking ahead to next year and planning a party. If it comes to be, you are all invited. In the meantime, hit the candy clearance sales. The stores are already brimming with Christmas so it’s up to you if you switch gears immediately or spend a month on turkeys, pilgrims, and gratitude before turning the décor to St. Nick and the baby Jesus. The ghosts of my Halloween past are full of smiles and good memories, and probably a residual sugar buzz. If you haven’t dressed up in a costume in years, start thinking on it. You just might enjoy it. I’ll keep you posted on my party date. You’ve got plenty of time. (Kelly Epperson Simmons has sparkly pumpkins in her house through Thanksgiving and then the trees come out. Writing a column requires laughing at self
O
n occasion, I receive emails from readers requesting information about what it takes to write a column. Just how does one go about being a columnist? Magic wand aside, there are numerous answers to the question, depending on the day. But I thought it might be convenient to put them all in one place. Or mostly one place, I may have left some of my notes on the piano. Column writing is serious business meant mostly for nonserious people especially if you are attempting to write humor. The ability to laugh at your own foibles, errors and general imperfection is practically essential. If you can’t laugh at yourself, how are you going to get others to laugh at you? That is why, when you do something stupid, you want to make sure you take notes so you can relay your foolishness to the rest of the world. I’m pretty good at getting myself involved in adventures that don’t always turn out as planned. When this happens I can hardly wait to do what any inept person (aka columnist) would do: transcribe them for all of posterity. Perhaps some day even my great grand-
Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE
kids will know how laughable I was. One can only hope. Columnists – and writers in general – feed off of ideas, or in technical terms, writing material. Without material, you have a blank page, and nobody wants to read a blank page. It’s not even possible. Certain life situations enhance column-writing material, namely kids, pets and spouses. Who are the wackiest people and fuzzies you know? I’m guessing your family. Mine too. They give me some of the best family fodder around – for free. Accessing information about your pets and next of kin is easy. Sharing it is not. You have to gauge where to start and more importantly where to stop or you’ll become an information overloader. They don’t call it TMI for nothing. You must navigate the tightrope between mak-
ing an anecdote giggle-worthy for readers while not infuriating the people living at your house. This is especially true if you have teenagers, who are easily infuriated by their most embarrassing parents. Writing about pets, on the other hand, is a no-brainer. To the best of my knowledge, mine can’t read, so they have no way of determining when I share their hairball moments with the world. Members of my family, unfortunately, are not only literate but they read the newspaper. Luckily, they are forgiving and understand that I have an irrepressible need to document the zaniness that makes up our life. Plus I cook food for them on a daily basis and most of them really like to eat. Being married to an understanding, yet comically inclined, significant other helps tremendously. It is also helpful if this other has a great sense of humor, is able to put up with slight bending of the truth and possesses medium or preferably thick skin. Mine has all these traits, plus he’s a whiz with grammar and serves as my editor and proofreader so he’s a boost to this column on many levels.
Speaking of grammar, it helps to be friends with the grammar police who will shoot you down and lock you up for the least of offenses. Again, it’s helpful to have a spouse who understands that the effect of being apprehended for a grammar gaffe could affect my week in a negative way. I’m not going to lie (or is it lay?) my husband is (and has) a tremendous asset. Grammar leads me to language usage. I love playing with words – to throw out terms like transcribe and posterity in a sentence and let them work their magic. Once I snuck the phrase “fish aficionado” into a sentence. That one was golden. Finally, I guess one of the most important qualities of a columnist is to just be yourself. Don’t hide. Don’t fake it. I’ve never been good at hiding and I’m not sure I could fake it, even if I tried. If I wasn’t me, who then would I be? (Certainly not my cat, but don’t tell him I said so.) Jill Pertler is an award-winning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Don’t miss a slice; follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.
Road crew provides volunteer time to government agencies During the 2015 McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Facility Road Crew season, a total of 4,374 hours of volunteer work was provided to the community. The season started April 22, 2015 and ran through Oct. 16, 2015. This year’s Road Crew season nearly triple the gallons of paint were recycled in the townships of Algonquin, Marengo and Nunda. This collaborative effort resulted in a total of 720 gallons, filling thirteen 55 – gallon drums, being recycled for the Illinois
E.P.A. The Sheriff’s Office Road Crew assisted fifteen Townships and several government agencies: Alden, Algonquin, Chemung, Coral, Dorr, Dunham, Grafton, Greenwood, Hartland, Hebron, Marengo, McHenry, Nunda, Richmond, and Riley townships, City of Harvard, City of Marengo City of Wonder Lake, and the McHenry County Department of Transportation. The tasks the Road Crew provided this season included: 2,130 hours collecting trash
160 hours of painting 596 hours of brush and tree removal 672 hours of asphalt paving and patching 166 hours of paint recycling 650 miscellaneous hours that included shop cleaning, washing fleet vehicles, and landscaping. Sheriff’s Office Road Crew workers cleared 328.8 miles of roadway wand easements, which filled 735 garbage bags. Inmates participating in the Road Crew expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to serve.
While this program provides the community and government a service, participants learn skills, aiding them in future employment opportunities. The Road Crew program is just one of the Sheriff’s Office Inmate Worker Programs. Inmates throughout the year also assist in various jobs including: kitchen, laundry and block workers. Corrections Officers supervise workers and make sure the workers and community are safe while they are assisting the communities.

Green Living Expo By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
T
he Green Living Expo at McHenry County College is always interesting. Batteries can be recycled for free, the Northwestern University solar car is back and a variety of vendors and green displays can be viewed and discussed. I come across exhibits while still in the parking lot. The Northern Illinois University experimental car is attended by its team members. “It makes 1359 miles per gallon on regular gas,” Josh Helsper of the NIU team tells me.” We make it as light as possible, minimize friction and increase aerodynamics.. We do a lot of fine tuning. The driver is the shortest person on the team. He has to be about 5’2” to fit. Our last race was in June in Detroit, Michigan. Our next race will be in April with another in June. “ www. niusupermilage.org Sitting next to the MCC entry for the expo is a Tiny House by Titan Home Builders. Outdoor demonstrations this year include fly casting and snowshoeing. Indoors the expo has about 70 local businesses and organizations offering ecofriendly ideas on renewable energy and recycling resources. Ken West of Material Things located at 103 E. Van Buren St., Woodstock, is displaying artwork. “I have 6 artists that repurpose items in their work,” West tells me. “I have over 100 artists represented at Material Things.” The shop offers fused glass lessons in beginning and intermediate levels on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. Each class runs for 2 weeks. www.materialthingsartisans. com Juice Plus has a nearby display with a Totally Vertical Aeroponics Tower Garden.
