Recycling with the Defenders By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
I
t’s a bright, sunny Saturday morning and vehicles are lining up to offload recyclable items. The Recycling Drive alternates between McHenry and Woodstock. Held on the second Saturday of each month, November’s Drive is in McHenry. Alice Howenstine is in charge today and is being ably assisted by Dwight Dalton who usually runs the recycling drive in Woodstock. An active group of volunteers is also here collecting and sorting Styrofoam, batteries, light bulbs, televisions, computer monitors and more. The trucks used at the recycling drives are generously loaned by Ken Santowski and Chicago Logistic Service. “Both of us have basically been at this since ’71-’72,” Dalton tells me. “We started with collecting newspapers. Then we added tin cans, glass bottles and jars, then aluminum cans. For a while cans were two types of metal. We had to sort them with magnets.” “We used to have a crew that collected newspapers from the train. They would put them in a shed. We, as volunteers, would collect and sell them to Precision Twist. They used them for catching oil drips and shavings from manufacture. They also used them as packing material.” “We used to have an actual recycling center in Woodstock. We even had a full-time employee. We pushed so hard for curbside recycling that we put ourselves out of business,” Dalton continues. “We’ve branched out to other materials like Styrofoam and electronics because they can’t be collected

Tucking in kids: Little ones grow up I t’s Friday night at 11:00 p.m. – the end of a particularly hectic week and I am tired. But it is okay, because I can go to bed, thank goodness. They don’t need me to tuck them in anymore, at least not on Fridays, when they outlast me and sometimes end up tucking me in because it’s been a long week and they are usually kind to their mom. This tucking, while sweet, is by no means guaranteed. They have places to go and things to do most Friday nights. Such is the life when you are a teenager or slightly beyond. On the best nights (my viewpoint, not theirs) they are all home under one roof, but that doesn’t happen often. It wasn’t long ago that was the norm. They’d be home, in their beds, tucked in by 8:00 because they were little and tired. Looking

SLICES OF LIFE
back I suppose I took it for granted. I took lots of things for granted. Them being home and in their beds. Having dinner together every night. Sitting with them over a bowl of cereal in the morning or ice cream in the evening. The security of car seats. Snuggling together on the couch watching Nemo. Reading “Go Dog Go,” over and over. Little things. Everyday things that seemed everyday until they weren’t anymore.
I asked a friend about this recently. Did she take the everyday for granted, too? Without hesitation she gave a knowing nod and I felt some sense of relief, I guess, at not being the only one. She didn’t have to say a word. Her nod and expression could have filled pages. They were the actions of someone who toiled for years at parenting only to discover that once the job starts to get a little easier your duties are outsourced and your skills no longer needed. At least not on a daily (or hourly) basis. It is bittersweet, their continually increasing independence - that they are growing up and away. I thought I’d forever be buying clothing from the children’s section. That toys would always be a part of Christmas. That chocolate
milk would always be a mainstay in our fridge and sippy cups would forever prevail. All things change. I should be celebrating. Some days I do. Other days, I see Barney or Big Bird on TV and remember when we used to watch and those sing-songy melodies got locked into my brain: “I love you; you love me.” It is Friday night and I have the ability to go to bed when I am tired. I appreciate this freedom. I went years without sleep and know the realities of deprivation. Still, I look forward to next weekend when they will all be home and we will share a meal at the kitchen table, watch some football and stay up too late talking and laughing. I am glad they want to come home at all. I’m sure there are people and places and
parties much more interesting than good old mom and dad. But at least for now, they return home. Maybe because they know we want them to. Maybe because they want to themselves. Maybe because they need groceries and gas and a hot meal in their bellies. Probably a little of each, but for sure the latter. And that’s okay. They still need a few things from mom and dad. Thank goodness. And we still want them to come home. Thank goodness. In the simplest of terms, it’s what being a family is all about – along with tucking each other in at night. Thank goodness. Video gambling machines are the new ‘crack cocaine’ By Professor John Kindt Guest Contributor
T
he U.S. National Gambling Impact Study Commission highlighted in its Final Report that electronic gambling machines (EGMs) constituted the new “crack cocaine” for addicting gamblers. The U.S. Congressional Commission concluded that any states with EGMs convenient to the public needed to re-criminalize those machines. Modern casino gambling revenues come 90 percent from the video gambling on EGMs—formerly called slot machines The definitive academic study published by Harvard and MIT indicates that near these EGMs/gambling facilities, crime increases approximately 10 percent every year—as people lose their resources. Similarly, bankruptcies increase 18 percent to 42 percent as former
consumer spending is lost into the gambling machines. Gambling’s lobbyists allege new tax revenues, but academic studies indicate that the costs of the gambling-caused crime, bankruptcies, and other new social costs to the taxpayers are at least $3 for every $1 in new tax revenue. In most states the tax revenues are slowly siphoned away from education and teachers and back to gambling’s insiders— such as the recent N.Y. Lottery scandal where $1.7 billion was allegedly misdirected. Congressional testimony in 2015 noted: “one of the first states to embrace the lottery, riverboat casinos, and neighborhood electronic gambling, Illinois has given away at least $35 to $100 billion to gambling’s insiders since 1990”— enough money to remedy most of the state’s budget problems, including the state’s $115 bil-
lion debt for unfunded liabilities. In Illinois, the taxes on video gambling are openly ridiculed, since revenues go 70 percent to the owners/operators, only 25 percent to the state treasury, and only five percent to the local government. Other states have higher tax percentages as they try to emulate Canada, where virtually all of the revenues go to the Canadian government (minus reasonable management fees to the gambling operators). There are few genuine controls on video gambling. For example, in Illinois the 2009 Illinois Video Gambling Act technically allows Illinois to have more EGMs than exist in Nevada. Beginning EGM installations in 2012, Illinois has quickly expanded to over 21,509 EGMs in convenience locations, including a scuba
shop and a flower shop. By comparison, Illinois’ ten casinos have 11,046 EGMs (and only 274 table games)—with 11,623 seriously addicted gamblers on the self-exclusion list for casinos. Regulation of video gambling on convenience EGMs is problematic, as exemplified by Judge Aaron Jaffe’s shouting match with Illinois state legislators promoting EGMs and his headline in the Illinois Daily Herald: “State Video Gambling Chief Says ‘Almost Impossible’ To Keep Mob Out.” Judge Jaffe’s sentiments were echoed in the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, and most Illinois news media—which called for the repeal of the Illinois law authorizing video gambling. Studies confirm that student populations are particularly vulnerable to EGM gambling addiction and will get hooked
at double the adult addiction rates—creating a larger, expensive, new generation of gambling addicts. Knowledgably, the college town of Carbondale was one of the first Illinois communities voting in 2009 to ban the EGMs—however, dictating to local government, gambling lobbyists subsequently overturned this ban. EGMs shrink the consumer economy, denigrate quality of life, increase taxes, and stigmatize governments. Governments must change their image, re-criminalize EGMs, and “grow the economy” to attract new consumer businesses. Otherwise, EGMs and associated gambling proponents will continue to deteriorate local and state economies. Professor John Kindt is a Senior Editor of the multivolume 2009 through 2014 United States International Gambling® Report.

his is the last of the three part series that I will be writing about our alpaca business. The first two editorials can be found in the July and August issues of Midwest Farm &Ag. There I wrote of how we got started in the alpaca business and what is required to care for these wonderful animals. It’s time I answered the question, “Why do you raise alpacas?” Despite the fact that they are so easy to care for, it’s all about the fiber/hair/wool. As I mentioned in the last article, we shear our alpacas once a year in the spring to harvest their fiber. Each shear-
ing produces roughly five to 10 pounds of fiber per animal per year. Most people are unaware of the unique qualities of alpaca fiber compared to most other natural fibers. Hopefully this article will change that! This fiber, often compared to cashmere, can be turned into many different finished products from yarn and rovings to sweaters, socks, gloves, hats, blankets and rugs. The fleece itself is recognized globally for its fineness, softness, light weight, durability, excellent thermal qualities and luster. The Suri Network, a suri alpaca breed organization, says alpaca fiber is second only to polar bear hair for its thermal proper226814

ties. Compared to wool from most breeds of sheep, alpaca fiber is stronger, lighter and warmer. Finer grades of alpaca fiber (known commercially as “Baby Alpaca”) are believed to be hypo-allergenic, meaning they do not irritate your skin as sheep’s wool sometimes does. Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca fiber contains little to no lanolin. Because of this, it does not require the cleaning that is required for sheep’s wool and is ready to spin with very little effort. After shearing day, we prep our fiber for shipping. The prep that we do is called “skirting.” Basically, we put the fiber from each animal on a table made out of chicken wire. We then pick out any debris such as straw and grass. We also flip it so any second cuts (short fibers) from the shearing fall through the wire. This goes back to getting a quality shearing job. Once skirted, we send the fiber to various outlets to have it processed, depending on whether we want yarn or rovings or finished products. One place we send fiber to for finished product is AFCNA (Alpaca Fiber Co-Op of North America) . We then buy back finished product that is available in our farm store. In addition to selling the fleece and the animals, many breeders of alpacas operate an end products retail store on or off their farms. Our alpaca farm store has alpaca apparel, including beautiful sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens and more. We also have alpaca yarns, blankets, teddy bears and rugs. Once people have felt the softness and warmth of wearing alpaca, they want to come back for more, either for themselves or as gifts for others. What better gift could you give someone than the gift of warmth! Well, this concludes my articles about our alpacas. Thank you for all the kind comments I

Create holiday gifts that keep on giving By Melinda Myers
Make this holiday season one filled with creating memories and gifts that keep giving throughout the year. Terrariums have made a comeback and make wonderful do-it-yourself projects and gifts for beginning and experienced gardeners. They enable gardeners to continue to grow no matter the weather outdoors and can be updated and used as decorations throughout the year with some simple updating for holidays and other special occasions. Just add a few ceramic items like a Christmas tree ornament, ceramic bunny or other adornment or two that represent the season. Don’t know where to start? No problem. You can create your own from an old glass jar or vase or purchase an elegant terrarium with copper bottom guaranteed to create the perfect stage for your tabletop garden. Or purchase a terrarium kit that includes the plants, container and all you need. For the artist, young or old, and avid bird-
er, consider a green birdhouse. These biodegradable birdhouses are made from 100% recycled paper and designed to last through one nesting season. You will have fun decorating it with stickers, markers or paint, making this a gift you and the birds will enjoy. Plus, once the season is over, there’s no need for cleaning. It can simply be added to the compost pile. Not feeling artistic? No worries. Give a decorative treat for the birds. Those with live Christmas trees can extend their enjoyment by decorating the tree with colorful birdseed ornaments once it is moved outdoors. Make your own ornaments from suet, peanut butter and birdseed or purchase ready-made ones. And no green thumb is needed for this DIY holiday beauty. Easy care waxed amaryllis bulbs (gardeners.com) are self contained and easy to grow. The bulb is sealed in gold or silver wax, making it both decorative and low maintenance. There’s no watering or container needed.
Just set it in a bright location and wait for the floral display to appear before your eyes. You’ll be enjoying big blooms for several weeks. Stay on your diet as the holiday approaches with a sugar-free advent calendar. You can make your own from felt and fabric glue or start a family tradition by purchasing a handcrafted advent calendar like the wooden bird cottage advent calendar (gardeners.com) that celebrates nature and the holiday. Each day leading to Christmas you’ll remove a bird from its cubby in the cottage. Peg it to the birdhouse and watch the flock grow. Your friends and family will know Christmas is coming each year when you break out the calendar. It’s sure to provide years of memories and could soon become a family heirloom. Make this the year for creating memorable gifts, trying something new or packaging DIY projects that are sure to provide seasons of fun and beauty.

Clayworkers’ Guild hold Annual Holiday Sale By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
“
One of the most artistic and popular displays of its kind, the Clayworkers’ Guild Holiday Art Pottery Sale has been a popular shopping destination for the past 10 years. Housed at the Old Courthouse Arts Center on the historic Woodstock Square, members of the Clayworkers’ Guild of Illinois join together every holiday season, offering beautifully handcrafted works of ceramic art for both display and everyday use.” Just inside of the Clayworkers’ display area, if you turn to the right, you will see the handiwork of Susan Galloway. Susan ran the pottery program at McHenry County College for 30 years. She is married to Bob Blue, also a professional pottery maker. Last year, I purchased one of her yarn bowls for my sister who knits. My sister absolutely loves it and uses it daily. www.blueeaglepottery.com Next, as you browse, is Ben Rosenfield of Frog Hollow Pottery. Ben is the president of the Illinois Clayworkers’ Guild. He worked with Susan Galloway for many years and now works out of his own home. Among other items, he creates ceramic drums. He stretches his own goatskin drumheads. www.
TheFrogGuy.com Trish Volkammer is displaying pottery which uses techniques introduced to guild members and pottery students by Tom Vician, the new teacher in charge of the McHenry County College pottery program. Primitive Firing is done once a year. It is done in a pit in the ground. Substances such as banana peels, coffee grounds and other stuff is tossed into the pit with the pottery. Then the pit is heated to over 1000 degrees and covered. It stays there for two days before it is uncovered again. “Primitive Firing pots are for decorative use only. It’s what the Indians used to do,” Clayworkers’ Guild member Cyndi Hicks says. Volkammer is displaying some Primitive Firing technique items along with a few Soda Firing technique pottery. In Soda Firing, “Load the kiln and get it up to temperature. When it reaches 1500 – 2000 degrees, we dump baking soda in,” Cyndi Hicks tells me. Then the kiln lid is closed and the firing commences. Sue Clough is displaying a few soda fired items in her display at the Old Courthouse Arts Center. “When you have been a potter for a while, you start to feel like you have done everything,”
Cyndi Hicks made these hand-thrown pots with added decorations.
Hicks says. “Tom is bringing in a lot of new techniques, which is great.” Lena Wells “has been at this forever. She works out of her own home in Marengo.” “Pottery is an art of the essentials: earth, water and fire, guided by the human element of spirit,” reads Wells’ card. Regina Lombardo “works out of her home. She has taken a few classes at MCC.” Lombardo does a lot of printing on clay and does custom work. www.coronaclayworks.com Frank Richards of Plum Tree Pottery “is fairly new to the clay world. He works at home and at the MCC studio.” Cyndi Hicks says of herself, “I’ve been doing this for many years at MCC and at home. My pieces are all high-fired (2300 degrees) and food safe. I took a trip to Santa Fe when I was 13. Every day I would go to watch the Indians throw pottery. I worked for 3 years at Lill Street Studios, the largest ceramic studio in the Midwest. Then I moved to Woodstock and discovered MCC and the Clayworkers’ Guild of Illinois.” The Clayworkers’ Guild of Illinois can be located online at www.clayworkersguild.com. McHenry County College photos by Anne Eickstadt is at 8900 US Highway 14, Cyndi Hicks playing a ceramic drum created by Ben RosenCrystal Lake, IL 60012 www. field. mchenry.edu
