Bookstore re-opens in Woodstock By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
P
opular, local bookstore, Read Between The Lynes, closed for a month as it changed locations in Woodstock. Now located at 111 East Van Buren, the former site of Seasons by Peg, Read Between The Lynes is now up and running. The Grand Re-Opening takes place at 8:30 am on Saturday, October 24, 2015. A red ribbon is stretched across the entrance by special, young customers. Following a brief speech by Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager, he and Arlene Lynes wield a pair of enormous scissors to cut the ribbon and officially open the new store. The cheering crowd follows them into the store and out of the dank and cloudy morning weather. “We want to thank Arlene for her support of the town,” Mayor Sager says. “There are not a lot of stand-alone bookstores anymore.” “The City of Woodstock is grateful for the significant investment that Arlene and Keith have made to our community. It is not often that an independent bookstore has the vision and commitment to open and maintain a store in a smaller community. But, we feel blessed in Woodstock that Arlene and Keith have dedicated themselves to fostering reading and education and community spirit.” Arlene and I pass each other several times as she keeps the Grand Re-Opening
events on schedule and receives the constant stream of congratulations. “Things are crazy around here,” she tells me. Everyone filling the store wants to speak to her, compliment the new look and larger location of the shop and give her their well wishes. Her loyal customers appreciate the joy of coming together again in her uniquely local and personal bookstore. Arlene then introduces me to Jim May as she is showing him the new storytelling area of the shop. I am honored that May remembers me from a meeting a few months ago. Jim May is a lifelong resident of McHenry County and an Emmy award winning storyteller, teacher and author. He is skilled in the ancient art of the oral tradition in which clans and communities shared histories, fables and tales. “For centuries,” May says, “telling and listening to stories has been a way for people to enjoy and cherish one another’s company. When I tell a story, I try to entertain and delight but also to capture, for a few moments, the kind of direct soul-to-soul communication that we have all experienced at some time in our lives under the ‘spell’ of a story.” “We are really fortunate to have such a successful bookstore,” he tells me. “We are really lucky to have a place to read and relax with books.” Read Between The Lynes caries May’s published works: ‘The Farm on

Prayer Corner in Woodstock By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
WOODSTOCK — On Saturday mornings, the junction of Benton and Jackson Streets transforms into a prayer corner. The Zion Harvest Church [formerly Fresh Harvest Church], sets up a small booth attended by a pair of prayer partners for anyone who asks. “We have been doing prayer on this corner since August. We are here every Saturday from 8-12. Even if it’s raining, we’ll come out,” Richard Rivera tells me. “I love praying for people. I know God answers prayer. We are not here to convert anyone. We are just here to pray and support people.” Jennifer Robinson says, “We provide a friendly face. We pray for the homeless, those without jobs, business owners. We are getting to know Photo by Anne Eickstadt the neighbors.” “The homeless come to us all the time and Richard Rivera and Jennifer Robinson of Zion Harvest Church ask for prayer,” Richard agrees. “We are helping attend the Saturday morning Prayer Corner in Woodstock.
to support Ryan Haines, a missionary in New York. Ryan is a bass player. He turned down several contracts to play professionally with famous bands to work with Street Life Ministries. His parents, Ed and Beth Haines, live in Marengo.” “I spent a week there [in New York],” he continues. “We got a lot of our ideas there. We don’t ask for money.” “We have different people that participate. We are not always the ones on this corner,” Jennifer tells me. Zion Harvest Church “is a Christian congregation serving the Woodstock community and seeking, engaging and encouraging others through a life-changing Christian journey.” They seek to be a “loving, friendly community that worships God and serves others.” “We place a high priority on teaching from the Bible and following the example of Jesus. ostumed Kids converged on the Woodstock HarleyDavidson dealership on Saturday, October 24, for their annual Howl-O-Ween Party. “We’ve been doing Halloween parties for kids for many years,” Ashley of the Woodstock Harley-Davidson tells me. “Having a kids Halloween party during the day is our way of giving back to the community by giving a fun and safe place for kids to come and go trick-or-treating.” The kids party runs from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm and features balloon artist Holly Nagel. Holly has been working with balloons for 18 years. “I’m having so much fun,” she tells me. “I love seeing the kids’ costumes and being part of this event!” Holly can be found on Facebook at Holly Nagel Entertainment. The kids can’t seem to get enough of the balloon swords, spiders, wands, flowers and more that Holly is creating. Even the hot dog and hamburger lunch has trouble holding their attention as they continue playing with their new balloon toys. The Harley-Davidson staff has set up trick-or-treating stations all over the facility. Ashley leads the kids in a costume parade. A game of Follow The Leader has the costumes flaring with spins and twirls as Ashley leads
them from treats to treats. The party continues with more games and crafts, keeping the children and adults well entertained. After today’s festivities, which include an adult party this evening, the Woodstock Harley-Davidson dealership will prepare for their next event. “On Saturday, November 7, we’ll be having our dedication ceremony for our Veterans’ Memorial. We are the only HarleyDavidson dealership in the country that will have a permanent memorial,” Ashley tells me. “We will have guest speakers from the Woodstock Harley-Davidson, the Village of Woodstock, the Armed Services and the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. We will have a Color Guard. We will be honoring all branches of service as well as a Table Ceremony honoring MIAs [Missing In Action] and KIAs [Killed In Action] who never made it back home. People should arrive by 10:30 am. The ceremony starts at 11:00 am.” The Woodstock Harley-Davidson dealership offers free motorcycle storage for all deployed military personnel for the duration of their deployment. For the community, they offer free storage for the winter with free pick up within 100 miles. Check their website for more information on these special offers, other ongoing specials and upcoming events. www.woodstockharley-dav.com

Volo, Illinois woman pleads guilty to robbing two Chase Bank branches and attempting to rob a third ROCKFORD — A Lake County woman pleaded guilty today in federal court to two counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery. Teresa M. Knowles, 39, of Volo, Ill., pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Kapala to robbing the Chase Bank, in Crystal Lake, Ill. on March 21, 2015, and the Chase Bank, in Grayslake, Ill. on March 24, 2015, as well as attempting to rob the Chase Bank in Johnsburg, Ill., on March 24, 2015. According to the written plea agreement, on March 21,
2015, Knowles drove a Nissan SUV to a branch of Chase Bank located in Crystal Lake, Ill. She entered the bank, approached a teller window and passed the teller a note that demanded $10,000. The teller first handed Knowles $400. When Knowles said that was not enough money, the teller then handed Knowles another $2,450. Knowles then left the bank and drove away. Knowles also admitted in the plea agreement that on
March 24, 2015, she drove to a branch of Chase Bank located in Grayslake, Ill. She entered the bank and handed a teller a note similar to the note Knowles used in robbing the Chase Bank branch in Crystal Lake. The teller handed Knowles $1,000. Knowles walked out of the Chase Bank with the note and drove away. In addition, Knowles admitted that on March 24, 2015, she drove to a branch of Chase Bank located in Johnsburg, Ill. There, she entered the bank and handed a teller a note
demanding money. When the teller refused to hand over any money, Knowles walked out of the Chase Bank and drove away. Each count of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery carries a maximum potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison, up to 3 years of supervised release following imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and full restitution. The court must impose a reasonable sentence guided by the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines. Sentencing for Knowles is set for
Feb. 4, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. The guilty plea was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Michael J. Anderson, Special Agent-inCharge of the Chicago Office of Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Johnsburg Police Department, McHenry Police Department, Grayslake Police Department, and Crystal Lake Police Department assisted in the investigation. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Love.
No additional charges to be lodged against Quarry development forward in Marengo Scott Peters in Deputy Maness’ homicide moving By Samantha Fetzner quarry in the area. Peters to serve mandatory 114 years in Department of Correction
MCHENRY COUNTY — Louis A. Bianchi, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that the manner of death hearing for Deputy Dwight Maness conducted by the office of the McHenry County Coroner, Dr. Anne Majewski, determined his death to be a homicide. Subsequently, our office has conducted an investigation to determine whether the perpetrator of Deputy Maness’ injuries and death should be charged with murder and concluded that no additional charges would be placed against Scott Peters at this time. Our review included, but was not limited to: Review of the police reports prepared during the investigation following Deputy Maness’ death to determine the cause of death. Review of the medical records of Deputy Maness. Meetings with Sheriff Bill Prim and members of McHenry County MIAT (Major
Investigation Assistance Team). Meeting with Mrs. Sue Maness. Consultation with Coroner, Dr. Anne Majewski. Review of the arrest, trial and conviction of Scott Peters on the charge of attempted murder of Dwight Maness. While there is not any expectation that murder charges will be lodged in the near or distant future, that charge can be levied at any time in the future since there is no statute of limitations on murder. Here are some of the factors considered in deciding not to bring additional charges presently: Scott Peters was sentenced to 135 years in the Department of corrections on October 16, 2014 for the attempted murder of Dwight Maness. The statutory requirement for 135 years mandates that Scott Peters serve no less than 114 years in the Department of Corrections. Scott Peteres, on the conviction for attempted murder of Deputy Maness, cannot be released earlier than the date of June 14, 2128. (He would have to survive to 166 – which is not likely possible.)

MARENGO — Almost an entire year after purchasing 255 acres of land in January of 2015, Super Mix Inc. has received approval from the board in Marengo to develop a quarry. However, the quarry is not within the 255 acres currently annexed by Marengo. That property, which was annexed into Marengo in 2013, became a hot commodity with the proposed I-90 interchange that is still not set in stone. Super Mix bought the land at a cost of $18,350 per acre for a total of $4.7 million. The property originally belonged to a farm, which still maintains an additional 500 plus acres. The 255 acres of land could still be used a multitude of ways, but Pease, owner of both Super Mix and sister company Super Aggregates, opted to seek an additional 80 acres of use as this proposed quarry. His request for a special use permit was approved. Pease’s quarry will be located on the west side of Route 23 just south of Pleasant Grove Road. The tor center. According to Pease’s proposal, the quarry will not be visible from the road, and the currently proposed entrance will be across from Meyer Road, which intersects on the North side of Pleasant Grove. Pease still needs to receive approval for annexation to have the quarry within Marengo city limits. If all goes according to plan, Marengo would be able to reap the benefits of this new quarry through both sales and property taxes. The fees for mining extraction, as well as the cost of annexation, are yet to be determined. Although the board opted to proceed at this time, the plans still need final approval with all the financial figures finalized from the City Council during a future hearing. During that hearing, the public will have an opportunity to voice their concerns, some of which, including potential for pollution, have already been brought up. Pease and Super Mix/Super Aggregate will also need to plan for the potential reconfiguration of Meyer road that’s been proposed. In the event Meyer Road is moved, a different temporary entrance would need to be in place for the quarry.

Putting small acres to work workshop series announced

URBANA — The University of Illinois Extension local foods and small farms team is sponsoring a series of workshops on a variety of topics to help people who have a few acres learn ways that they can put them to use. Dates and locations for the 2015-2016 workshop series, “Putting Small Acres to Work,” were recently announced. The workshops will be offered between Dec. 5 and April 2, at four locations throughout Illi-
nois. Topics and presenters will vary at each location. Topics at some locations may include: social media; small flock poultry; asparagus; pumpkins; brambles and chain saw safety; managing wildlife; how to grow a hobby into a farm business; hops; small orchards; organic/low-input vegetable gardening; sheep; ducks; and composting for livestock producers. “Putting a few extra acres to
work can bring in additional income, provide an opportunity to experiment with a new enterprise, or develop an interest or hobby for its educational or entertainment value,” said University of Illinois Extension local foods and small farms educator Deborah CavanaughGrant. For more information about the series, contact CavanaughGrant at 217-782-4617 or cvnghgrn@illinois.edu.

Life sans canine: Takes some getting used to

hen you no longer have a dog the world is a different
place. The barks of other dogs resound and seem louder than they were before. When a neighbor’s dog barks and wakes you in the early morning or late night it doesn’t so much annoy, but provokes a twinge of sadness. When you no longer have a dog you don’t have to worry about dog-hair dust bunnies or running out of dog treats. You don’t ever have to read the label on dog food for the hundredth time to make sure real meat is the number one ingredient. You can save money at the grocery store because dog food is expensive. When you no longer have a dog you notice other people with their dogs. It seems as though everyone else has one. They are walking on the street or playing fetch or post-

ing cute dog photos on social media. Sometimes you scroll through them, other times you try not to. When you no longer have a dog you can walk freely through your yard without constantly having to look down to avoid stepping in the doggy doo – although this takes some getting used to. It’s hard to walk freely without looking down when you’ve done so for so more than a decade. When you no longer have a dog you can take an evening stroll without bringing a plastic bag along. You don’t have
to pause at every fire hydrant or telephone pole or carry the plastic bag home once it is full. When you no longer have a dog and the humans in your life are unavailable, sometimes you take walks alone. When you no longer have a dog leaving the house is simplified. You can be gone all day without having someone let the dog out or feed her lunch. You don’t have to secure a spot at the kennel when you go on vacation. There’s a certain freedom to that. When you no longer have a dog there is no one to wag her tail when you come home. And when you return after a long weekend, you don’t have to worry about anyone peeing on the floor because they are so glad to see you. When you no longer have a dog shoes don’t get chewed. No one chases the cats or
drags her butt across the carpet. There are no dog toots to smell and you don’t have to be concerned about anybody ransacking the neighbor’s garbage and coming home with a tuna can stuck to her tongue. When you no longer have a dog, you don’t have anyone begging for a tummy rub. No one kisses you all over your face or sniffs you in unseemly places. When you no longer have a dog, sometimes you dream about dogs and sometimes even about the one you used to have. Sometimes dogs can talk in your dreams. Those are the good dreams. When you no longer have a dog and you hear creaks or noises from upstairs you automatically think it is your dog and then remember she is gone and it couldn’t possibly be her. You wonder how long it will be before creaks and noises become just creaks and
noises. When you no longer have a dog, suddenly puppies take on a whole new level of cuteness and you think, “Maybe,” but then just as soon, “Maybe not,” because you know your heart isn’t ready yet. It may never be. But you never know. All this – good and bad – is okay, because if you no longer have a dog it means that at one time you did. In doing so, you experienced unconditional love and a companionship like none other. That is a gift. And I believe if you no longer have a dog, it is a gift waiting for you in heaven. Because all dog owners understand: it wouldn’t be heaven if dogs weren’t there.
go natural and now I don’t even think about it. Except for how easy and wonderful it is to not color my hair. We are adaptable, resilient, versatile, flexible creatures and that is wonderful. Give yourself credit for being more amazing than you realize. When Prince Charming and I did the no sugar, no alcohol, no gluten, no dairy thing, so many people expressed, “I could never go without (fill in blank).” Never say never. I used to think I would never do lots of things. And holy cow, here I am, fit as a fiddle. Big and small ways, we get used to anything, so make it for the better. Think about how when you rearrange furniture, for example. Don’t you love it and get used to it right away? Or how you quickly get used to where things
are when you drive a rental car? Or how you couldn’t imagine life with a baby and now you could never imagine your life without kids? We get used to all kinds of change! Keep creating a new normal for yourself. One that includes you doing things you never thought you would and trying things you never thought and letting go of things and people you never thought you would. You can get used to anything so make it for the better! You just might surprise yourself. I sure do. And now excuse me, while I go find my toothbrush. recently touched a tile in my shower (it looked like it was poking out a tiny bit at the corner) and it fell off. Oops. That led to a total bathroom remodel. (Because we’re crazy that way.) I LOVE our new bathroom but that is not my point here today. A gutted bathroom meant I had to use the shower and toilet in our lower level. I had thought it would be an incredible hassle (and race against time) to have to run downstairs to pee first thing in the morning. Turns out my bladder is not the size of a peanut and can go all night and then some. I got used to showering downstairs in what had been the “boy bathroom” and I quickly got used to brushing my teeth in the kitchen sink and putting on my
make up at my bedroom dresser. Now that my bathroom is done and gloriously wonderful, I caught myself heading downstairs to use the toilet and I went to the kitchen sink looking for my toothbrush. “They” say it only takes 21 days to make a habit, and in this case, it’s true. We are liked trained monkeys. (I mean this with love, I’m one of them.) Go to a foreign country and you will get used to all kinds of toilets, and water with no ice, and warm beer. Customs and habits and how things are vary and we can vary our own. It is great news that we can get used to new things. For example, my breakfast back in the day was a Pop-Tart and a Dr. Pepper. I evolved over time to having to start my day with yogurt and granola, and now I much prefer

Veterans Day holiday falls on November 11 and currently is designated as a day to honor all who have served in the military. This date is linked to formal end of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The first Armistice Day in the US was celebrated on November 11th 1919 proclaimed by President Wilson An Act approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November a legal holiday, as a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace known as “Armistice Day”. Then, June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. (Congress, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” ) In June 28, 1968, was signed The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 ) moved Veterans Day to the 4th Monday in October, but many states did not agree with that, and continued to celebrate the holiday on November 11. New law have caused so much confusion, that finally President Gerald R. Ford September 20th, 1975, signed Public Law 94-97, and returned the Veterans Day to its original date, beginning in 1978. Now, Veterans Day falls on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls.

Four-step plan for procrastinators o, you want to get organized at home and you have stuff to do and you don’t want to do it? What’s that all about? I think I might have the answer and with a little bit of help from a friend, I have a four-step solution for you. Little help from a friend This week, I talked to a very funny woman and she was so inspirational, I just had to share her humor and wisdom with you when it comes to being a procrastinator. Kristina is my

Zumba teacher and has agreed to do a series of fun and lively exercise videos for my Club Organized website. She’s just adorable and so inspiring when it comes to getting herself to take care of things she tends to put off. Kristina is an amazing ball of fire! Her personal story is compelling. (I keep telling her she has to write a book.) She weighed almost 200 pounds on her 40th birthday and when she saw the photos from her party, those pictures were the turning point for her. She showed

me photos and told me that although she was grinning and looking happy in them, she was miserable and she decided to do something about it. I’ve known her for four years and my guess is she weighs about 120 pounds. I can’t imagine her being 200 pounds, but she has the photos to prove it! She loves to show them to her classes, inspiring women to get fit and be healthy. When we talked the other day, she told me about her problem with procrastination and how she’s solving it. Although she hasn’t read my books she knows about my inner child Nelly. She hasn’t gotten around to naming her inner child but she’s sure she has one and hers is rebellious and loves to play! She told me she came up with a plan which is really working and it involves her inner child. Kristina’s four-step plan for procrastinators Step one: Make a list of the things you’re putting off and arrange them in a priority. Tell your rebellious inner child she gets to put off doing anything on the list for two hours. Use your timer. Step two: In the first timed hour do whatever you want to do. Be free. Call it your freedom hour. Let the kid in you decide what to do and mind her. Step three: In the second hour go outside and play in the dirt or do whatever you like to do outside. Maybe it’s walk, or garden-
ing, it’s all up to you, but it’s your time outside. Again time yourself. Step four: When your two hours are up, set the timer for one hour and work on a procrastinatory (Kristina’s word) task. One of the things she’d been putting off was figuring out how to heal her financial problems. She’d been to a conference where she remembered one of the speakers saying, “When you have a financial problem, often the money you need is right under your nose.” Kristina took one of her procrastination-solving hours to figure out what to do about her income. In that hour it dawned on her that she and her two daughters bounce around in their huge home and really live in less than half of it. She went to a construction school down the road from her home and asked the owner if any of the school’s students needed housing. He told her his students were always looking for rooms. Her home is so convenient and close to the school that she has been able to rent out the upstairs to four students and she and her girls are happily living in the basement which has a full kitchen. She now brings in an amount of money that helps her live comfortably and stay on a budget that doesn’t run up credit cards. Kristina said, “All because I quit putting off figuring out what to do!” She loves playing with her
inner child and letting her play before she works and she told me she gets so much accomplished even in that play time. Often it’s easy to do what I call the Scarlet O’Hara. Scarlet said in Gone with the Wind, “Oh, I’ll think about it tomorrow.” If you’re procrastinating some figuring out time, put your timer on and go play, then after you’re all played out, spend an hour figuring. Who knows, you may even come up with some solutions while you play. Speaking of procrastinating, when I wrote my latest book The Joy of Being Disorganized, I used writing that manuscript as a carrot. Because it was such a joy to write, I began putting off my valued daily routine! I had to tell my inner child that we were going to write after we got the other important things accomplished. If you’ve tried to get organized in the past and you’re still struggling, I know this book can change your life, because it’ll change your perspective. It’s available on Amazon and I’d be thankful to you for checking it out! For more from Pam Young go to www.cluborganized.com. You’ll find many musings, videos of Pam in the kitchen preparing delicious meals, videos on how to get organized, and ways to lose weight and get your finances in order, all from a reformed SLOB’s point of view.
