WOODSTOCK — The Thanksgiving weekend Tag Days fundraiser is now completed. ‘Tag Days’ is the time when the Rotary Club and volunteers from other service organizations shake their cans [collection cans] at various locations in Woodstock to support the holiday food and gift program: Christmas Clearing House. Donors during Tag Days are given a tag to wear on their coats to show their support. “We count on the community and their spirit of giving – giving of their time and money to make this a success,” says Laura Cullotta, Tag Days cochair. “We are hoping businesses come out and help as a team building effort.” Friday, November 27, sees the teen Rotary club, Interact, actively collecting for the Lighting the Square event. On Saturday, the adults take over the fundraising. The Christmas Clearing
House is now in its 45th year. It was founded by the Woodstock Girl Scouts in 1970. The Rotary Club of Woodstock started running the event in 1972. The program ensures that our friends and neighbors have a wonderful Christmas. Last year, more than 1300 families, including 2400 children, from Woodstock and Wonder Lake received gifts and food baskets. In addition, food baskets were provided to 250 of the community’s seniors. The Rotary Club of Woodstock was founded in 1967. Woodstock Chamber office to relocate By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
WOODSTOCK — After many years on the historic Woodstock Square, the Chamber of Commerce has sold its’ current home in hopes to better serve the community by relocating. The Chamber’s new home will be inside the City Hall building at 121 W Calhoun St. starting in 2016. The building, while not on the Square itself, is still in close proximity to the old location. The move comes after years of struggle for the Chamber to handle the financial burdens of property upkeep in their own location. The sale price of their soon-to-be former location was recorded at $175,000. In lieu of their own building costs, the hope is that Woodstock’s Chamber will be able to turn their focus back to the community. After a series of changes in directors vention District, approximately and Chamber leadership as a 25 officers then conducted an extensive ground search of the area using thermal imaging and ATVs while boats equipped with sonar scoured the river, all without results. The search was eventually suspended because of darkness, and resumed at about 8 a.m. Tuesday MARENGO — Two vehicles with the assistance of McHenry were involved in a personal County Emergency Management injury traffic accident Monday Agency (EMA). whole, the new building comes at a time when they are already able to start with a clean slate. The new office will be in the basement of the city hall building and will be used at no cost to the Chamber itself. The Chamber expects to be operating out of that location in full by mid-January. The existing location will be open during the transition. Given that the new location is not in a location as frequented by visitors as the Square is, the Chamber is working with Read Between the Lynes, a local bookstore located at 111 E Van Buren, to produce a “visitor center” of sorts. The store is open seven days a week with longer hours
Search for older handicapped man ends body-matching description found in Fox River MCHENRY — An 8-hour search of a mixed-use area north of McHenry, Illinois, Tuesday resulted in the finding of a body matching the description of a 69-year-old mentally handicapped man who had been reported missing from his home along the Fox River the previous evening, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday. A search helicopter from AirOne Emergency Response Coalition, conducting a sweep south of Ill. Rt. 120, observed what appeared to be a body in the river at the end of a private pier. McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies were directed by the Air-One pilots to the site in the 500 block of Mineral Springs Drive in unincorporated McHenry, where they located and secured the body. Roger T. Little had been reported missing Monday at about 8:30 p.m. by his brother, with whom he lived in the 2800 block of north Villa Lane, also in unincorporated McHenry and an area containing private residences, the Chapel Hill Golf Course and farmland. Responding deputies searched the residence and outbuildings and a complete neighborhood canvass was conducted followed by an attempt to develop a trail using canines. of operation than the Chamber office itself. This means it will be more easily accessible to the public. With the move, the Chamber hopes to better serve the needs of the community and focus more on the businesses and people that make Woodstock such a great place to live. Woodstock is not the first city in McHenry County to give their chamber a “reboot” in recent years. The City of Marengo also realigned the focus of their Chamber efforts and have seen great success. Hopefully Woodstock is able to achieve the same success with their transition. Any questions can be directed to the Chamber 815-338-2436.

Crystal Lake businesses compete in gingerbread contest By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
D
owntown Crystal Lake has developed a unique fundraiser formed as a gesture of goodwill and giving back to the community. A number of businesses in the downtown area are displaying Gingerbread Creations. These are displayed near a countertop Salvation Army kettle. Everyone is invited to view each Business Gingerbread Creation and vote for their favorite. Voting is simple. Every dollar deposited in the Salvation Army kettle corresponding to the Business Gingerbread Creation is worth one vote. The business that collects the most dollars/votes by Christmas Eve will be the winner of the 2015 Business

Gingerbread Creation Contest. In reality, the Salvation Army and the people they serve in our community are the true winners. So, keep in mind, this is the only time that it is legal to stuff the ballot box! The current list of participants includes: Agnes Oh!, Benedicts La Strata, Crystal Lake Bank & Trust, Crystal Lake Natural Health Care, Evolve, Giorgio’s Pizzeria & Pub, Kitchen Outfitters, Le Petit Marche, Marvin’s Toy Store, Out of the Box, Penny & Izzy’s, and Yours & Meyn. If you are inspired to bake your own gingerbread creation, you can join the 13th Annual Gingerbread Contest and register at Kaleidoscoops, 53 N. Williams Street, Crystal Lake. The public will be able to vote for your entry – but this time there is only one vote allowed per person. Here are the recommended recipes:
Gingerbread Recipe 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup molasses 3-1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. ginger 1/4 tsp. cloves 1/3 cup water Cream butter and sugar thoroughly with electric mixer. Beat in the molasses. After blending all the dry ingredients, add alternately with the water to the butter-sugar mixture. The dough might become too stiff, so the last flour addition may need to be blended by hand. At this point the dough may be refrigerated for up to one week. Make sure you take it out 3 hours ahead of baking to become workable. 2-3 batches will be needed for each house. To bake gingerbread, place about 1/3 of the dough on a

cookie sheet that has been lightly greased with oil. Using a lightly dusted rolling pin, roll the dough to approximately 1/4 inch thickness. A dampened towel under the cookie sheet will prevent it from slipping while rolling. Trace pattern onto dough. Remove extra dough and bake in 375o oven for 8-10 minutes. Make sure the dough is baked all the way through. After baking, let the gingerbread cool on the cookie sheet for 10 minutes. While warm, place the pattern back on top and trim around the edges. After 10 minutes, remove to cooling rack and cool completely. It is best to bake the house 48 hours before building. Recipe provided by Melody Stanko Royal Icing 3 Tblsp. meringue powder 4 Cups sifted confectioner’s sugar 6 Tblsp. water (1 T. less for stiffer icing) Beat all ingredients at low speed for 7-10 minutes, or until
icing forms peaks. Store in air tight container. To give decorations a shiny show effect, add 1 T. corn syrup to1 cup royal icing Instructions and helpful hints can be found online at www.downtowncl.org.
