Helping Paws offers holiday special on adoptions By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
K
ids adore baby animals and now is the purr-fect time to adopt. The Helping Paws no-kill Animal Welfare Association is running a holiday special on the adoption of kittens through the end of the year. Just imagine the joy on your children’s faces when they find kittens under their Christmas tree or playing next to the fireplace. “We would love to see all of our kittens have a home for the holidays! That’s why we are starting a special today, December 11, 2015, through the end of the month on all our babies and teens. $30 off the regular adoption fees – so all kittens under six months are now $100 and those six months but less than a year are $70. All are spay/neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped and have 30 days of free pet insurance.” Anyone who has, now or in the past, pets can do the math and figure out that the costs for the services alone are worth more than Healthy Paws is asking. Plus, you are assured of the animal’s good health and safety when

HUNTLEY — The model train club at Sun City Huntley is at it again. Their annual Holiday Train multi-level display opened on November 21, the weekend before Thanksgiving, and will remain open through Sunday, December 27. This elaborate display has four sizes of track gauge with 11-12 trains running at any given time. Each gauge of track has its own level so that even the smallest trains can be easily seen. “We have a few new buildings,” Don Espeseth, president of the Kishwaukee Valley & Eakin Creek Model Railroad Club says of this year’s display. “We have a house afire with fire engines.” The Holiday Train display has a huge appeal. Espeseth tells me that they anticipate about 1500 children coming to enjoy the display this year. Plus, “for every child that shows up, we have two adults.”
“We had 700 people on Grandma/Grandpa Sunday,” club member Rich Porto tells me. Two high school groups have come to Sun City to sing. Operation Life Saver has come over. “Operation Life Saver promotes railroad safety. They come out and have a lot of different giveaways.” They expect more groups to arrive throughout the holidays to enjoy the model trains. These groups will include seniors with disabilities from Deerpath and groups from the Heritage Woods Continuing Care facility by the fire station. The train display is free and the Kishwaukee Valley & Eakin Creek (KV & EC) Model Railroad Club will be giving away three Lionel Train sets again this year. “These are not cheap tin things. They will last a lifetime,” Porto says. Chartered in 2002, the KV & EC Model Railroad Club chose their name to reflect the topog-

you pick them up to take them home. This could be the best bargain of the year. “Our kitten room is filled,” Director Sharon Fabian tells me. Many pet stores get their animals from puppy and kitten mills. These facilities have irresponsible breeding practices and focus more on the bottom line than on the health and welfare of the animals. Animals from these mills may have expensive health issues later on in life due to the poor breeding practices and unhealthy living conditions of the mills. When you adopt a pet from a shelter, the funds are used to

help more animals who have been discarded, lost or left behind. Animal shelters provide a warm, safe place for animals to stay until their family comes to take them home. The animals are checked by veterinarians and receive their shots and any needed medical care before they are adopted into a family. Thus, you are assured of a healthy pet when you adopt from a shelter. Founded in 1971, Helping Paws is the first animal welfare organization established in McHenry County. ComEd battery storage OKed for Marengo By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MARENGO — At the Dec 14 Marengo City Council meeting, members approved an annexation that will grant space for use as a storage facility for ComEd batteries used for the area’s power grid. There were a total of seven votes cast with only a single ‘no’ vote. Said vote was cast by Alderman James Regelin, citing concern for property values in the area as the driving reason for a ‘no’. The approval also grants the special use permit necessary for the facility’s operation as a battery storage location in and of itself. The annexation itself accounts for over 8 acres of land, while less than 1 acre will be allocated for the covered storage facility(s) itself. The annexed property lies on the northwest corner of the intersection of Route 20 and Ritz Road in Marengo. The main focus of the facility will be to protect the area from power surges in the event of storms and other potential hiccups in the grid. In the event of a large surge, the
batteries will take the hit and absorb the extra power instead of forcing it into our homes. The location was chosen due to the close proximity between it and the ComEd substation in town. The substation is also on Ritz Road, but on the corner of Ritz Road and Railroad Street, a short distance from the 20 intersection south of Railroad Street. The facility is unlikely to be operational until between the end of 2016 and the early half of 2017. Battery developing company GlidePath Energy Solutions will be working on the project in the upcoming year. The facility will not be manned by personnel, but will be monitored on a remote system similar to off-site tech support. GlidePath, based out of Elmurst, will be able to see the functionality of the batteries and control them over a computer network they develop to suit the needs of this site. The company currently operates two other locations and is working on a third in McHenry which will go live before the Marengo location.

raphy in and around Sun City Huntley. The club is organized to provide its members with an active, entertaining and participatory organization for the many different facets of model railroading. Members are interested in all gauges of model railroading from the smallest “Z” gauge through increasingly larger gauges “N”, “HO”, “O” and “G”. “We are the only club in the nation that runs four gauges,” Espeseth and Porto agree. “Sometimes we run five gauges.” Their permanent clubhouse houses four active gauge sizes in their daily activities. The Holiday Train Display can be enjoyed in the Prairie Lodge Social Lounge, 12880 Del Webb Boulevard, Huntley, Illinois 60142. The layouts, featuring four different gauge trains will be operating through Sunday, December 27, 2015. Weekday running times will be 11 am til 3 pm. Weekend running times will be 11 am til 5 pm. There may be extended hours depending on other activities in the Lodge.
