Connecting Deployed Troops to Home By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

rian Halwix of Union founded ‘Home Connection’ to support our troops overseas. “We send all kinds of stuff. We have jerky and cookies and coloring pages. We have teamed with Stauffer’s, the makers of animal crackers. Soldiers use the boxes as ice breakers with the locals. The kids love to color our logo. They also give boxes to newly deployed soldiers and enjoy some of the boxes themselves.” When soldiers are deployed overseas, they are separated from family, friends and everything they grew up with. The ‘Jerky for Troops’ organization is where Halwix learned how important packages from home can be. “I chaired that organization for three years,” Halwix tells me. “It became a lot more personal, talking to the soldiers and seeing pictures.” Jerky is one of the items most requested by troops serving away from home. “All of the jerky that we at Home Connection have made

nybody and everybody is welcome to come,” James Regelin, Marengo alderman, tells me. “This is not a church event, it is a community gathering for soup and camaraderie and building bonds with neighbors.” Since the day its doors
opened on October 13, the community Stone Soup Kitchen has been located at the First Presbyterian Church, 203 W. Washington Street, Marengo on Tuesdays. “We offer a variety of soups every Tuesday from 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm. We have a lot of volunteers coming forward.” The variety of soups can range from vegetable soup to chili and dill
pickle soup to chicken and/or beef.” Donations have come from “Knights of Columbus from Sacred Heart, MORE, the First Presbyterian Church of Marengo, the Methodist Church of Marengo, McHenry York Rite and members of Marengo Lodge 138. Helen Lindow and Don Lockhart have offered monetary donations to help buy supplies.” Panera Bread, Trio Lounge, Swiss Maid Bakery in Woodstock and other businesses have also been donating supplies of bread, rolls, cookies and soup for the Stone Soup Kitchen. In fact, the Trio Lounge has also allowed Stone Soup soup makers to make soups in their kitchens.
Regelin chose the event’s name from the Stone Soup folktale.: Once upon a time, somewhere in post-war Eastern Europe, people jealously hoarded whatever food they could find, hiding it even from their friends and neighbors. One day a wandering soldier came into a village in the evening and asked to stay for the night. “There’s not a bite to eat in the whole village. Better keep moving on.” “Oh, I have everything I need,” he said. “In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you.” He asked to borrow a large cauldron, filled it with water, and built a fire under

it. He reached into his pocket and brought out an ordinary looking stone. He carefully brushed it off and dropped it into the water. Hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers came to the village square. The soldier sniffed the “broth”, licked his lips in anticipation, and hunger began to overcome their skepticism. “Ahh,” the soldier said to himself, loud enough to be overheard, “I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage – that would be good enough for the Mayor.” Soon a villager approached, holding a cabbage he’d

The moral is that by working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved. Regelin hopes that Marengo’s Stone Soup Kitchen will bring the community together in the same way for the greater good of Marengo. Each Tuesday, people come
in greater numbers to sip soup and chat with each other. A small basket is set out for any donations made to help cover the costs of ingredients. Regelin wants to not only draw members of the community closer together but also help those who are hungry. At the end of the school day, they want to see the kids come in for soup and sides and to talk with each other. At the end of the work day, the Stone Soup crew want to see everyone who did not come in for lunch. They will also give what is left to those who are hungry so even the homeless have food. Museum puts vintage Christmas on display UNION – Pin Dave Harms down and this veteran nurseryman admits you can’t top a live, fragrant pine for Christmas. But that said, if you are going to embrace an artificial you could do a lot worse than a vintage aluminum tree. Germany may have exported ornaments here, but the aluminum Christmas trees he hung them from were homegrown. Trees were 2 to 8 feet tall, in colors that ranged from pink to teal. Some were flocked. Others boasted lights on the branches or in the base. Manufactures included Metal Trees Corp., Holi-Gay Manufacturing and Flocking Specialties Inc. in Chicago; and Aluminum Spe-
cialty Co. and Mirro Aluminum Co. in Manitowac, Wis. It is estimated Aluminum Specialty, alone, sold some 4 million signature Evergleam brand trees between 1959 and 1969. After all, they were novel, shiny and spoke to a nation fixated on technology. “I see it as a moment in time, when we had space exploration coming on and all of these new things being made out of aluminum,” Harms said. Harms and his antiquing partner, Lynne Eltrevoog, are bringing about 70 aluminum trees, manufactured between 1958 and 1969, to the McHenry County Historical Society Museum as part of this year’s Holiday Open
House. Harms has staged holiday displays at the museum for the past nine years. He began collecting Christmas memorabilia in 1980, when he first set out to find a lighted tree stand like the one his grandparents used when he was a child. Fearing the stand would leak and short out the lights, Harms said, they never turned it. “The fact that grandpa and grandma never had it working drove me nuts,” said Harms, who grew up in Morton Grove and now lives in Crystal Lake. The wintery feel of the aluminum Christmas tree forest is completed by white backdrop, donated by Miceli Drapery Co. of Union, and by many holiday
pieces Harms has collected during the more than 35 years he as been a member of Golden Glow of Christmas Past – a worldwide club for collectors of antique Christmas items. They include molded elves and angels; plastic 5-foot Santas and a snowman, once given away by Polk Bros. appliance and furniture stores in 1962; as well as color wheels, aluminum candy canes, lighted decorations, sleds, a working Lionel train. Those attending the Dec. 5 open house at the museum, from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. at 6422 Main St. in Union, will have an opportunity to play Christmas 45s on a working Wurlitzer jukebox ($1 donation per song),
Resources, and McHenry County Audubon will be on hand between 9–11 a.m. at three locations along the Fox River to help the public search for eagles: McHenry Dam, Algonquin Dam, and Carpentersville Dam. Volunteers will have scopes and binoculars available for use at each location. Maps to the locations are available at www. MCCDistrict.org. The final part of the day’s event, Eagles of Illinois, presented by the Illinois Raptor
Center and sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled for 11 a.m.to Noon at Prairieview Education Center in Crystal Lake. Those who are registered will get to see the power and beauty of these truly magnificent birds of prey and meet a Bald Eagle and a Golden Eagle. Highlights include other birds of prey that are commonly misidentified as eagles. Program is free to all ages but space is limited and registration is required, (815) 479-5779.

Admission is free. Eltrevoog said the price of aluminum likely means its return in Christmas trees is unlikely. A 7-foot tree that sold for $80 in 1960 now commands up to $3,000 on eBay. Pink varieties, in particular, are in demand. “When I look at the whole aluminum forest, I laugh,” Harms said. “People are obsessed with them or equally horrified. “The first year I did this a couple came during the week and I just happened to be here. It turns out they worked on an assembly line making these during college,” Harms said. “I love hearing the family stories about whatever it was at Christmas time. It was such a great time for me as kid.” The aluminum Christmas tree forest will remain on display from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday Dec. 8 through Jan. 8 and on weekends by special appointment. For information call 815-923-2267 or visit www.GotHistory.org. The museum is closed Dec. 24, 25 and 31, as well as Jan. 1.
Algonquin Starbucks to serve evening menu following liquor license approval By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
As is the case with several other area locations, the Algonquin Starbucks at 1352 E. Algonquin Road will begin offering a small variety of beer and wine. The chain store’s “evening menu” is sweeping across the area. Huntley, Crystal Lake, Lake in the Hills, Dundee, and Schaumburg are amongst the other closest stores offering the same menu. After receiving approval for their Class F liquor license, the store is allowed to serve limited alcoholic offerings alongside more substantial food such as appetizers and small plate meals. Nearby
Cary is also considering adding a Starbucks location that may ultimately offer the evening menu as well. The approval for the liquor license came as no surprise. The Lake in the Hills location started service of the evening menu in early November. The other Algonquin location as well as the Huntley store started in October, and Crystal Lake received their licensing in August. The menu is new in the area. Schaumburg was the closest location to offer the menu previous and had been doing so in Woodfield Mall since 2012. McHenry County now has a total of 5 locations operating with the evenings

Compromise reached in Crystal Lake South football bleachers issue By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
After being removed down to the ninth row, neighboring property owners and District 155 have reached an agreement to keep the bleachers intact pending proper zoning approval from the City of Crystal Lake. Demolition, which started in October, originally called for this same level of tear down. The agreement comes after a lengthy negotiation process between not only the school and the property owners, but the City as well. The agreement ceases the pending demolition order- for now. Judge Michael Chmiel, the same Judge who ordered the removal of the bleachers over a year ago, signed off on the agreement in mid November, approximately 13 months after his original tear-down ruling. The school district now has an additional four months- until midMarch 2016- to get the proper permitting and approvals on their zoning requests for the bleachers. The agreement does not void the original destruction order- but rather it buys the district time to come up with an alternative
plan to leave some of their original investment of $1.2 million in working order. The school district’s zoning application will need to present a number of ‘fixes’ to appease the neighboring property owners as they devise a new bleacher plan. The main concerns that have been voiced by those owners include storm drainage, noise restrictions, and privacy concerns. The school will need to approach each issue with a palpable solution to gain the full green light and avoid further legal action from the community. As of November 25, District 155 had not yet filed their zoning application with the City of Crystal Lake. The current intent of the District is to relocate the press box as well as the home bleachers to the East end of the field, away from the neighbors. The construction costs for relocation and construction are expected to be $1.5 million at this point. The original timeline proposed for this project included submission of zoning requests in November, which has not yet happened. If the requests are not filed soon, construction could be pushed beyond the first quarter of 2016.

Tips to give unique, meaningful gifts this holiday season
(StatePoint) Making your list and checking it twice? Coming up with unique items for all your family and friends in a short period of time is not always a simple feat. Luckily, there are many easy ways to make everyone on your list feel special. Customized books While literature always makes a great gift, a personalized book will make reading time extra appealing, and a cherished present that will never be forgotten. Personalized book companies let you make your gift recipient the hero of a unique story, complete with the person’s name and photo. Personalized candles Turn the gift of a treasured candle into something even more personalized by incorporating photos and messages on the candle label. Make a statement by picking a fragrance with your recipient in mind, tied to special memories you share. To create made-to-order combinations for your friends and family, consider Yankee Candle, which offers several customization options that allow you to personalize everything from the label design to embellishments in the wrapping. Their lineup of fragrances includes Buttercream, Lilac Blossoms, and Sparkling Cinnamon, conjuring fond memories of everything from a walk
through flowery fields to a favorite holiday dessert. Personalized candles, which are easy to design, also make thoughtful hostess gifts for all your holiday festivities this season.
DIY gift basket A standard-issue gift basket will be appreciated, but to show you truly care, consider customizing each gift for every recipient. You can make unique creations by taking favorites
into consideration. Is your gift recipient a dog lover? Does she have a sweet tooth? After stocking baskets with goodies customized to their tastes, adorn each one with unique garlands, ribbons and
bows. This holiday season is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of all the easy, customizable options available to make each gift thoughtful and unforgettable.

equipment is becoming a critical issue. Because of unforeseen circumstances, many drop-off locations have closed their doors. Lakewood’s Public Works Facility is one of the few places in the area still taking E-waste. Large quantities may make it hard for this service to continue unless other towns help. Your municipality or township can easily start a similar collection program. It is an opportunity for towns and social service providers to work together. With the ground level, self service POD, residents pull right up and easily unload their unwanted electronics. Of course, some folks don’t follow rules and just toss things in willy-nilly. They are careless? Inconsiderate? For the most part, people do the right thing, making this doable for any community. The electronics container is easy to fill. What then? There are a number of options that can be customized to meet your citizens’ needs. Pallets and gaylords (heavy duty boxes) stored in your facility are exchanged on an as-needed basis. Fill purchased storage POD and schedule a pickup of gaylords and large items when full. A semi-trailer is delivered and, once filled, a pickup and empty trailer is requested. Meet the needs of your town. Start your own Municipal Electronics Recycling. Chicago Logistic Service and E works have a mutual working relationship to provide electronic recycling services to municipalities, townships, private businesses and individual residences.
Your electronics will be fully disassembled in the United States with most of the work being done here in Illinois. The parts will be sent off to processers for reuse. Both businesses are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. The big question is: what’s the cost? Based on the data collected, the proposed annual cost per household is $13.14. The estimated cost based on the current tonnage collected would be $6.57. And finally, if all manufacturer credits are applied, $2.61. You don’t have to worry about being the first, you were chosen to lead, so LEAD!!! You, me, we, us, and those throughout McHenry County who are not here tonight, will all be the first together.” Santowski told me, ”This only needs to be put in place for about a year. The newer televisions are all recyclable and made of plastic. The old TVs have lead in them.” If interested, contact: Chicago Logistic Service, 501 Davis Road, Elgin, IL 60123 or Kenneth Santowski, 847.429.1926, cls@chicagologisticservice.com E works Electronic Services, 1201 Estes Avenue, Elk Grove Village, IL, 60007 or Lou Fyda 847.997.5191, lfyda@eworksesi.org If you believe this is a worthwhile and environmentally responsible plan, please let your Photo by Anne Eickstadt town councilmembers or mayor Ken Santowski, with the wind in his hair, at the November know.
