Christmas Clearinghouse in Action By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

R

otary’s early December Tag Days event collects funds to assist families and senior citizens to have a Merry Christmas. Saturday, December 19, sees hundreds of volunteers brave the cold and the snow to deliver food and toys to the right places. “It’s quite an operation,” says Kim Larson. “I’m in charge of coordinating the list of recipients. This year we’re going to be serving about 1110 families. The number is down a little, so that’s good.” “We couldn’t do it without the Moose Lodge,” Denise Graff Ponstein tells me. “They are providing breakfast for our delivery drivers. We have a budget of $5400 this year and we are giving toys to over 1900 kids. Toys for Tots helps us. We get a lot of our toys from them. We also receive toys from local companies that collect them for us. Then we can spend more money on food.” These two seasoned Rotary Christmas Clearinghouse women are constantly in motion even as they talk with me. “If you came back

in an hour, I wouldn’t have even a minute to talk to you.” Larson stays at the front to keep things moving while Graff Ponstein takes me to see the lower level of the building. The old Farm & Fleet building is currently owned by Harley-Davidson whose Woodstock showroom has moved across Route 47 to the old K-Mart building. I am astounded by the sea of food boxes and gift baskets that cover the lower area. A constant stream of volunteers moves these boxes to conveyer belts which glide them towards the open door “They get a whole turkey dinner and a box of food. They receive: a turkey, 2 cans of green beans, 2 cans of creamed corn, 2 boxes of stuffing, milk, a loaf of bread, rice, pancake mix, scalloped potatoes, cereal, chicken noodle soup, a bag of fresh potatoes, carrots, saltines, and 6-8 fresh fruits or vegetables,” Graff Ponstein tells me. Volunteers pack these boxes and baskets into lines of cars, SUVs, vans and trucks for delivery by still more volunteers. The vehicles are directed into position by volunteers

positioned all along the way from the street. Then the flow of traffic is directed back out again in a magnificent display of experience by the men keeping everything in the parking lots going

smoothly. “We thank the community of Woodstock and the surrounding area. It warms our hearts that, for 43 years, they have embraced and supported Christmas Clearing

House.” Further information about the Christmas Clearinghouse and Rotary Club of Woodstock can be found online at www. rotaryclubofwoodstock.com.

Where did New Year’s customs get started?

H

By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

appy New Year! It’s time to eat, drink and make lots of noise. But does anyone remember where these customs started? Today, Italians ring church bells, North Americans sound sirens and blow party horns to bid the old year farewell. In the early American colonies, it was the sound of pistol shots which served that purpose. Guns were fired in ancient Thailand to frighten off demons and the Chinese used firecrackers to rout the forces of darkness. Food and drink can symbolize good fortune, prosperity and the richness of the year to come. Ring-shaped treats such as donuts symbolize ‘coming full circle’, green food symbolizes the color of money and beans represent coins. In Spain, they eat 12 grapes at midnight for prosperity, the Dutch have ‘olie bollen’ fritters and the Irish enjoy ‘bannock’ pastries. Rice promises prosperity in India and Pakistan. In Gaelic, ‘wassail’ means ‘good luck’ and is drunk in parts of England. The Scottish enjoy spiced ‘hot pot’ for the

same reason and, in Holland, toasts are made with hot, spiced wine. The French use champagne and kiss at midnight to mark the first moments of the new year. The purifying effect of fire is used in many countries to drive away the bad spirits of the past year so that the new year can arrive unsullied and uncorrupted. The Scottish festival of ‘Hogmanay’ has parades of men swirling enormous blazing fireballs over their heads as they march through the streets. In Panama, they burn effigies of celebrities and politicians on bonfires. New Year’s resolutions are said to have their beginning with the Babylonians as early as 2600 B.C. as a way to reflect on the past and plan ahead. In Scotland, an important part of the new year celebrations is the custom of ‘first-footing’. The first foot to cross over the threshold after midnight will predict the next year’s fortune. Those considered especially ‘fortunate’ as first footers are: new brides, new mothers, anyone born on Jan. 1, and those who are tall and dark (and handsome?). If you would like to influence the coming year, you can also try some of

these customs: On New Year’s Eve, wear brightly colored underpants – yellow or green for money or red for love [South America] Open your doors and windows so negative energy will leave and good energy will enter your house. Do not remove anything from your house on New Year’s Day – some believe that you will keep on losing things if you toss anything out. Do not wash your clothes on New Year’s Day or someone in the household will die that year. Keep money in your pocket to keep money flowing in. You can also scatter coins on the floor if you prefer. Fill your water containers. Having empty containers cause you to have an empty life throughout the year. Wear polka dots for luck. Do not eat chicken or fish for your New Year’s Eve celebrations. These animals are foragers and, in the Philippines, that means bad luck for the next year’s food supply. If you are not superstitious and would still like to influence the coming year,

consider taking part in one of the many Polar Bear Plunges on New Year’s Day. Most of these raise money for charity so your efforts will have an effect for those in need of a bit of assistance. You will also have a good feeling about yourself as a great beginning to the fresh start of the New Year.

Happy New Year

Seneca Ladies’ Literary Society book launched By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

SENECA — In a standing room only event, Read Between the Lynes in Woodstock hosted the launch for the Seneca Ladies’ Literary Society’s new book about the history of their club. The Seneca Ladies’ Literary Society [SLLS] was founded in 1855. “Their aim was to reach and learn together and to contribute to the common good,” says the book’s introduction. “This collection of memorabilia from the SLLS is intended to provide a glimpse of what life was like for the spirited American women and what their neighborhood literary society meant to them.” “SLLS was founded to help save Mount Vernon – now the most popular historic site in America [It is also the first historical preservation site.]- along with Mount Vernon Societies that sprang up all over the country to purchase and preserve Mount Vernon. “Tens of thousands of women’s groups were created in the 1850s to participate in the movement to buy George Washington’s estate for the public. Mount Vernon’s fundraising goal was met in 1858 but the Seneca Ladies didn’t stop meeting. In 1998, ‘Life’ magazine featured an article an women’s reading groups crediting the Seneca Ladies’ Literary Society with being the oldest club it could find among the 500,000 then in existence.” Carol Halma, current president of SLLS, says, “A lot of friendship went on in that group. Women would walk, ride on horseback or come by buggy because they wanted the socializing.” Seneca Township is located between Woodstock and Union in McHenry County. It is centered around the tiny community of Franklinville on Franklinville Road. A history of Seneca, IL, published in 1922 by the Mussell

Publishing Company mentions the SLLS: “The Seneca Ladies’ Literary Society of this hamlet was organized in 1855, and has been in continuous service ever since. The first work undertaken was to help raise funds at a charge of five cents each two weeks, for the Mount Vernon Association. It early established a library and exerted an influence for good in various ways. It has now adopted and is supporting a French orphan. Mrs. Martha Rose, now of Marengo, was an early librarian there and is still an honorary member on its rolls.” While gathering information about SLLS for the club’s history, Judy Beth-Hervert searched the McHenry County Historical Society’s archives for SLLS

records. She located 30 bound ledgers of club minutes along with several scrapbooks. “It’s like opening time capsules,” she says. “When people open up the book, they’ll get a feel for how special the group was and is.” “Some ladies are fourth or fifth generation in SLLS,” comments Marie Howell Evans. “Figuring out the genealogy of SLLS is no easy thing. We have mothers to daughters-inlaw, but always there is a strong continuity.” “They had, at one time, 500 books. They had to replace them because they wore them out,” says President Carol

Halma. “They referred to it as a ‘travelling’ library. They had a catalog.” The book of the “Seneca Ladies’ Literary Society” is very much a group effort. Many SLLS ladies and members of their families spent time locating material, scanning photos, writing and putting everything together into a cohesive whole. Pamela Gerloff became the editor and is ultimately respon-

sible for the finished product. [$29.95] Which is, by the way, an excellent depiction of the history of what life was and is like in rural areas of McHenry County. that incorporates natural foods you’re excited to try, and begin to make small swaps. If it seems like an adventure, you’ll be inspired to avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, and stick to those that provide energy and key disease-fighting properties. Excellent examples of power-packed foods include bananas, dark leafy greens, black beans, avocados, strawberries, peas, quinoa, almonds, chia seeds and rolled oats. Shopping tip: these foods are typically located around the perimeter of the market. Mealtime magic at home Take a few minutes each week to make meal plans. Preparing and consuming mostly homecooked meals will train your palate to enjoy more healthful fare. And it’s worth the effort to know exactly what’s in each dish. Over time, you’ll learn to cook creatively with wholefood ingredients. Heathy eating can be a breeze with a wealth of mealtime ideas that take 30 minutes or less to prepare. A high-performance blender, like the Vitamix 780, makes it easy to whip up plantbased concoctions like smoothies, soups and whole-food juices -- even healthy sorbets made from nothing but frozen fruit. The blender has five touchscreen pre-programmed settings and an LED control panel to quickly create recipes with a single touch. Stick to It Now that you’ve committed to a whole foods-centered eating regimen, ensure old habits stay in the past. Take a few moments to write down scenarios that might sidetrack you and how to avoid them. For example, partner up with friends or loved ones to form a support system and encourage each other to make healthy choices when getting together for occasional meals out. And lastly-- it’s okay to indulge here and there. You will be successful if you are happy about your choices and don’t feel restricted. Focus on this new approach to eating to set out on the right course to optimal health. Understand what whole foods are, how to include them in your diet, and work with a support system. You’ll be well on the way to long-term success.

Antique quilts on display at Woodstock Opera House

WOODSTOCK — Nine antique quilts from the McHenry County Historical Society’s collection will be on display Jan. 5 through Feb. 29 at the Woodstock Opera House. The quilts, dating from the 1860s through 1950s, are available for public viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in the Community Room gallery. They also may be seen before, after and during performances. The fourth annual show features several unique patterns, ranging from a “Robbing Peter to Pay Paul” design to a 1880s “Crazy Quilt” featuring odd shapes and a haphazard pattern, to a snowflake variation dating from the 1930s. The “Double T” celebrated an 1868 marriage in Crystal Lake and a “Bear Paw” variation was quilted by Henry P. Allen in 1898 for his daughter – one of five children he and his wife, Louisa, raised

on their Woodstock farm. For information about the society or its Heritage Quilters, visit www.gothistory.org. The group’s newest raffle quilt, “Pieceful Garden,” is reminiscent of the 1930s and features a a simple nine-patch block with a consistent yellow center; a Jacob’s ladder block of white and pastel colors; and a center medallion of appliqued flowers. True to its name, it consists of a whopping 856 blocks! Early quilts often had many scraps of coordinating fabric, and this was the norm during the Depression and 1930s. While this is not a true charm quilt of the period, where every piece is of a different fabric, it gives the impression of great variety. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be at around 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the McHenry County Historical Society Museum in Union. The winner need not be present. For information, call 815-923-2267. Courtesy photo

This 1930s pinwheel design was quilted by Emma Honert, who lost her husband and village trustee, William, in a gravel pit accident on Dec. 2, 1908. The father of seven was buried alive and died of a broken neck. Emma survived by taking in laundry and working for the McHenry County Butter and Cheese Co. in town. In the 1920s she moved to Elgin to be near her married daughter but returned following her death in 1943. She was buried in the Union Cemetery.

Fraternite files suit against McHenry County Board By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

After the McHenry County Board declined their petition at the end of the 3rd quarter of the year, the Fraternite of Notre Dame remained silent. That is until they filed a lawsuit in mid-December accusing the board of discriminating against the organization due to their religious beliefs. According to the documents filed with the courts, the Fraternite and their attorney(s) allege that the Board committed six different infractions by voting against the proposed permitting. The Fraternite have operated out of their location in the rural Marengo area since being approved for initial permits in 2005. The board nixed the Fraternite’s latest proposal by a majority vote during a September Board meeting. The vote came after several months of propositions given to the county’s Zoning Board of Appeals. That department had a 4 to 3 vote in favor of the proposal. The Board however did not feel the plans were acceptable, with a massive 20 to 3 vote in opposition of their requests. The Fraternite’s expansion plans included a gift shop, nursing home, boarding school, and winery/ brewery which would have been exclusive to its members and therefore not open to the public.

A vast majority of neighbors in the Coral township area vocalized their opposition to the proposition by signing petitions and showing up at meetings. Many residents stated the Fraternite did not adhere to acceptable construction times and were often disruptive with construction throughout the night. There was also notation which stated that the already approved requests for certain aspects of construction on site had not been completed since they have been approved a decade previously. The lawsuit alleges that the rejection of the proposal is unlawful due to other similar operations in the area. The Fraternite’s attorney(s) cited statues for the federal Religious Land Use and Religious Freedom Recreation Act in their allegations. The Fraternite is seeking an overturn of the existing decision by the Federal court system to allow their proposal, as well as pay for their legal fees during this process. Whether a federal court will agree with their allegations remains to be seen, but the statistics certainly favor the existing decision. With over 800 signatures from Coral Township residents in opposition of their expansion, it is unlikely the area and the Fraternite will ever be in agreement regarding what is and is not good for our area.
