Christmas Clearing House 2016
By Anne Eickstadt,

he Woodstock Rotary Club has held Christmas Clearing House deliveries to those who are elderly, housebound or needy for over 40 years. This year, the Parker Family – Brendan, Sarah, Hannah [age 6] and Will [age 3 ½] have volunteered their services for the event once again. “We’ve done Christmas Clearing House deliveries of gifts and food before. This is our first year standing and collecting during Tag Days. It is a good opportunity for our kids to learn to give back to the community,” Brandon says. “We delivered about a dozen last year,” he continues. “When you see the looks on people’s faces, especially if they did not know that their neighbors or someone nominated them to receive a gift box or even if they do expect it…” Brandon’s face lights up as he thanks back. “It’s pretty cool when you go to pick up [food and gift boxes] and see all the people volunteering. And when you consider all the effort it takes to organize everything. It’s unbelievable.” “The Rotary Club is a great organization that gives back to the community. When you look at the family members that are participating in the Christmas Clearing House, they are all local.” “I work for the fire department. We house Christmas Clearing House at some of our stations. We try to get our members to participate whether delivering or giving.” The Rotary Club’s Christmas Clearing House has a new address this year. The food and gift baskets will be based at 14400 Washington Street, Woodstock, IL. It is the former site of Americast Concrete Products. It is two miles west of Dairy Queen on the north side of the road. A Christmas Clearing House banner will identify the location. That is where volunteers will pack boxes and baskets into lines of cars, SUVs, vans and trucks for delivery by still more volunteers. The vehicles will be directed into position by volunteers positioned all along the way from the street and back out again. Deliveries will be made on Saturday, December 17, from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm. Recipients of these deliveries will receive gifts and a box of food. “They get a whole turkey dinner. They receive: a turkey, 2 cans of green beans, 2 cans of creamed corn, 2 boxes of stuffing, milk, a loaf of bread, rice, pancake mix, scalloped potatoes, cereal, chicken noodle soup, a bag of fresh potatoes, carrots, saltines, and 6-8 fresh fruits or vegetables,” Denise Graff Ponstein of the Woodstock Rotary Club says. Volunteers are welcome to show up to help bag toys on Wednesday, December 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and to pack food boxes on Thursday, December 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. “We thank the community of Woodstock and the surrounding area. It warms our hearts that, for 44 years, they have embraced ANNE EICKSTADT PHOTO McHenry County News and supported Christmas Clearing House.” The Parker Family, Brendan, Sarah, Will (age 3 ½) and Hannah (age 6) are all pitching in to raise money for Further information about the Christmas Clearinghouse the Rotary’s Christmas Clearing House which delivers gifts and food to housebound, elderly and families in and Rotary Club of Woodstock can be found online at www. need during the Christmas season. rotaryclubofwoodstock.com.
Solarz officially new Marengo Police Chief By Samantha Fetzner REPORTER
In the last week of November, after acting as interim police chief since July, Richard Solarz has been named the permanent new Police Chief in the city of Marengo. Solarz, formerly a Sergeant with the department, has been a member of the Marengo police force for nearly 24 years. Solarz had been a Sergeant since 2003. He
started with Marengo Police Department in 1993. Hallman, Solarz’s predecessor, left the position after three separate stints as Police Chief with the city. He took a position at the University of Wisconsin. Hallman had been Chief for four years during his last term when he left for his new position. Solarz’s appointment to the position was unanimous when the Maren-
go City Council voted for him as interim chief earlier this year. Before coming to Marengo, he worked with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department from 1990 to 1993. During his time as Sergeant in Marengo, Solarz attended and completed the FBI National Academy program which he graduated from in 2012. Other experience on his resume includes work with the McHenry County Major
Crimes Task Force, and time served as a United States Marine. Remaining in the position of Police Chief, Solarz will oversee 16 people including a single detective, two Sergeants, and nine Officers. His promotion to permanent Police Chief will increase to $102,263 annual salary immediately, up approximately $2,500 from his previous pay. Scheduled pay increases through Novem-
ber 2018 account for an additional $12,000 plus assuming he remains in the position. Thus far his appointment and retention of the position has been well received by the city and its residents. He has already begun creating a more communal and personal relationship between Marengo officers and residents/businesses through community introductions and increased presence at area events.
CLC former choir director allegedly had sex with past students By Samantha Fetzner REPORTER
Crystal Lake Central High School’s now-former choir director, Justin Hubly, has been accused of having sex with former CLC students. Hubly was arrested on Tuesday, Nov 29 by the Crystal Lake Police Department after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Hubly had been under investigation for the incidents
in question since October when reports were first filed. Two of the alleged victims have been cooperating with the police department in their efforts to uncover the truth. Detectives have interviewed multiple people in relation to the case and have found enough evidence to move forward with charges at this time. Hubly, who is 35 years old, has
been the school’s choir director since 2004. According to the arrest records from the Crystal Lake Police Department, he was arrested on two counts of battery and one count of unlawful delivery of alcohol. He was released on a $10,000 bond shortly after his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec 27. The names of the two female alleged victims have not been made public
at this time. Reports by the accusers state that Hubly was providing liquor and then proceeding to engage in sexual behavior and activities with his former students in his own home in Crystal Lake. Since the investigation was opened in October, Hubly was suspended by District 155 shortly thereafter and submitted his resignation,
which was accepted by the District at the beginning of November. During his 12-year career with District 155, he had also acted as a director of student activities and also spent five years with the District 155 Education Association as their acting president. The investigation is still ongoing and active at this time. More details will be made available as the case progresses.

Lighting of the Square 2016 By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT
While the Christmas season seems to start sooner and sooner each year, it officially starts on the Friday following Thanksgiving. This year, that date falls on Friday, November 25. In Woodstock, they celebrate with the Lighting of the Square. Shops stay open late, several of them setting up special displays or offering coffee and hot chocolate to visitors. A community choir directed by Woodstock High School Choral Director Paul Rausch serenades us with holiday music from the Square’s gazebo. Thousands of people gather in the Square, waiting for Santa Claus to join the local dignitaries and help Miss Woodstock flip the switch to light the park and the Woodstock Square. Even more people fill the shops to take advantage of the holiday event specials which are being offered. Youth from the Woodstock Rotary Club are collecting for the Christmas Clearing House which delivers gifts and food to the housebound, the elderly and to families in need. Miss Woodstock 2016 can be seen moving around the Square before her appearance with Santa. Woodstock Willie visited Read Between The Lynes bookstore before his appearance on stage as well. The Mix N Mingle is filled with small business venders who are taking advantage of the large number of Christmas shoppers seeking unique and special gifts, ornaments and decorations for the holidays. Carol Swinford has brought a miniature Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to the Square. Rudolph, who is portrayed by Hawk, a mini who is currently in training to become a therapy horse. “We like to expose him to lots of new situations,” Swinford tells me. A nativity scene provided by the First United Methodist Church of Woodstock is set up on the lawn of the Old Courthouse Arts Center. Long lines of people are filling the sidewalk, waiting to climb the stairs to view the Gingerbread House Contest sponsored by the Friends of the Old Courthouse, visit the Clayworkers’ Guild of Illinois Annual Holiday Sale, and/or visit the December art exhibits on display. The Woodstock Opera House is

hosting its annual Christmas Tree Walk. Over thirty trees have been decorated this year by local groups and service organizations for this display. The Christmas Tree Walk is open to the public during the Opera House’s normal business hours through December 31. The buildings around the Square and along its side streets have been outlined with linear LED lighting. The 6000 linear foot lighting is nearly twice what has been used in previous years. The trees in the park glow with more Italian twinkle lights than ever before. Continuing the holiday spirit, Santa’s Hut opened its doors once Santa arrived following the lighting ceremony. He was trailed by families wanting to visit with him. Santa will be taking visitors from 5:00 pm on December 9, then from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on December 12 to 16 and December 19 to 23. On weekends, Santa will be at home to visitors from 2:00 to 5:00 pm [Dec. 10 & 11, 17 & 18] and 5:00 to 7:00 pm on December 19 to 23. Once again, the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring free carriage rides around the Square. Terry Leonard of Harvard with his horses and carriage will be stationed in front of the Opera House on Fridays and Saturdays from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and Sundays from 2:00 to 6:00 pm until December 18.

Old Courthouse friends announce contest winners
By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT
The Friends of the old Courthouse are raising awareness of the Old Courthouse in Woodstock by holding a Gingerbread House Contest this year. This fundraiser will be raising money for continuing further restoration and renovations in the building. Their aim is to raise the $5 million needed to restore the buildings to full public use. “We are running the Contest in conjunction with the Lighting of the Square,” says Vice President Sue Stelford. “Because we have the Christmas Tree Walk in the Woodstock Opera House. Now we have the Gingerbread House Contest here. We thought it was a great fit.” “We have twenty-three entries for four categories: Business, Civic Group, Families, and Children. Each category has a Winner and an Honorable Mention award. Tonight is People’s Choice. They can mark their ballots to vote for their favorite.” The Gingerbread House Contest opened to the public at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 25. By 7:00 pm, Stelford says, “We made over 100 ballots and we ran out of ballots a long time ago. We have had at least 600 to 700 people so far. We will still be staying open until 8:30 or 9:00.” The Old Courthouse is one of the few pre-Civil War courthouses still left standing in Illinois. Notorious prisoners held here include Eugene Debs who was involved in the Pullman Strike of 1894, and gangsters Dapper Dan McCarthy and Hymie Weiss. The Old Courthouse and the Sheriff’s House next to it have been featured in motion pictures such as Groundhog Day and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The Friends of the Old Courthouse have also been raising awareness of the historical significance of the Old McHenry County Courthouse and Sheriff’s House on the Woodstock Square by attempting to break the Guiness Book of World Records record for the longest cartoon strip by a group. With the permission of Chester Gould’s family [Chester Gould is the creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip], a member has copied off hundreds of panels from Dick Tracy comic strips. People are encouraged to trace the images onto a translucent piece of paper taped on top of the image. The Friends had hoped to complete it last fall, but fell a bit short of the mark. “We are still at three quarters of the way,” Stelford tells me. “Next spring we will start up the Dick Tracy comic strip again during Fair Diddley. Last year, during Fair Diddley, we had about three hundred people join on that day alone.” The Fair Diddley craft show is usually held on the second weekend in May. However, in 2017 the 49th Fair Diddley will take place on May 21 on the historic Woodstock Square.
Marengo police beat On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Gennine L. Vasquez, 30, of Marengo for the alleged offenses; Driving with One Headlight, Driving with a Suspended/Revoked Drivers License and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle. Ms. Vasquez was released with a notice to appear in court. On Friday Nov. 18, the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Michael E. Baker 20, of Marengo for the alleged offenses; Two Counts of Burglary, Three Counts of Theft and One Count of Criminal Trespass to Motor Vehicle. Mr. Baker was transported to the McHenry County Jail. On Tuesday Nov. 22 the Marengo Police Dept. arrested Nichole R. Depew 37, of Marengo for the alleged offense; Retail Theft. Ms. Depew was transported to the McHenry County Jail.
‘Christmas 2016’ is the Winner entry in the Family category. The name of the contributing Family is not listed on the display.
The Winner of the Children’s category for Gingerbread Houses is ‘Greeley’s House’. The display does not mention the Child’s name.

The Classic Cinema Woodstock Theatre received the Winner award in the Business category.
The Winner ribbon for Civic Group goes to the Woodstock Community Choir.
“Next fall, we plan to have a murder mystery dinner with a silent auction,” Stelford says. “We will present our Guinness Book of World Records plaques then. One will stay here [at the Old Courthouse] and one will go to City Hall.” www.friendsoftheoldcourthouse. org.
