arinades and vinaigrettes help make almost any meal a little tastier. Many can be purchased already mixed and bottled and found in the grocery aisles. Sometimes, buying untasted, we find that we do not like it, and it sits – unused - in the refrigerator until past its ‘use by’ date. For those who are tires of wasting their money, there is a unique shop in downtown Crystal Lake called ‘The Olive Tap’. “You can taste what you are getting before you buy it,” owner Robert Sherry says. Located at 68 N. Williams Street in Downtown Crystal Lake, this store is an olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting emporium. It is set up so that visitors can sample taste each of the products to decide which they prefer before they buy. “Purchases are bottled from the same tank, so you get exactly what you like.” Robert “Bob” and Lori Sherry opened the Crystal Lake location of The Olive Tap on August 1, 2012. It began when Bob quit his job. The company he worked for down-sized. While Bob kept his

Crystal Lake South High School neighbors to receive settlement By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

CRYSTAL LAKE — After filing suit seeking just under $316,500 in attorney fees last month, attorneys for the neighbors of Crystal Lake South High School and District 155 have agreed on a final number to resolve the lawsuit for the bleachers. The final number awarded to the plaintiffs for attorney fees in the case is $273K, just over $30,000 less than what was asked for originally. The parties met and came to a resolution on Mon. Feb 8. The District’s insurance will be covering the funding for said amount. The fees will help pay for the time put into the case over the course of two plus years, accounting for nine representatives (three paralegals, six

attorneys) and various other expenses incurred. The resolution comes after the announcement by Crystal Lake City Council at the beginning of February granting approval for District 155’s revised bleacher plans. The bleachers have been reduced to nine rows on the side closest to neighboring homes already. The present order requiring full demolishment has been put on hold and will be ruled on early in March. The school is hopeful the order will be removed in light of the zoning approval. The financial agreement was quite a stretch for the District. Approximately $240,000 separated the original proposed numbers. District 155 attorneys proposed approximately $78,500 be awarded when the original request was brought

forth. The final awarded amount more than tripled their proposal. The specifics of what was struck or reduced were not available to the public. The original proposal from Tom Burney and his associates who represented the plaintiffs did not include any of their mileage or travel time in relation to the case. Had those been included, the number would have been even higher. The current zoning approval calls for the physical bleacher situation to be resolved with construction upon approving a bid. Plans call for construction to begin in the Spring once the weather improves. The District hopes that the whole situation would be resolved and new construction completed by the time football season begins in the Fall of 2016.

The Fabric of Our Lives By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

Colors are everywhere. They are in vivid shades, jewel tones and pastels. They are seen in patterns and batiks. They completely fill the Material Girl Fabric Shop. Material Girl opened its doors in 2010 in the location previously occupied by The Fabric Shop owned by Millie Gieseke. Susie Fox purchased the business, ending 101 years of Gieseke presence in the historic Downtown Crystal Lake business district. Herman Gieseke built the Gieseke Department Store in 1909. His son, Les, was born there in 1915. After Les took over the business from his father, he moved its location a couple times but he always remained on Williams Street. Les married Millie Smida in 1939. She had worked in the Gieseke Department Store selling lingerie and drapery fabric. In 1957, Millie opened a separate store, The Fabric Shop, next to the theater building. After the building flooded, she moved the store across the street to 21 N. Williams where she stayed until she sold the business to Fox. Fox remodeled and renamed the store. Material Girl opened its doors in June, 2010. “It’s been great! It’s been fun!” Fox tells me. The shop has transitioned from primarily carrying fabric for clothing, upholstery and draperies. While it still carries these materials, it now special-

Burger King coming to Cary By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

CARY — Summer 2016 will be the first time a Burger King is operational in the city of Cary. It will also mark the first time Burger King operates a drive-through only restaurant in the United States. The restaurant will open at 60 Route 14, just south of the intersection at Route 14 and Main Street. Construction of the building itself will be off site. Once the building is prepared, it will be brought to the location and installed. The concept is modular according to design company N3 Real Estate. The restaurant is the first of its kind within the chain, but not the first of its’ design. The Cary Village Board approved the restaurant in a 5-1 vote on Tues Feb. 9. The only ‘no’ vote in the meeting was due to the size of the land accommodating the restaurant. The plans only call for enough space to accommodate 12 cars in the drive thru at one time. There will be two entrances as well; one on Route 14 and one on Jandus Cut Off Road. The restaurant will be one of many in the area between Three Oaks and Silver Creek Roads in Cary. Zoning approved a condition-use permit to allow the drive-thru to exist and a variance due to the low number of parking spaces that will be on site. The big hope is that a new business will generate additional interest and economic growth in the area. Burger King will be competing with restaurants such as Kojak’s, Dairy Queen, McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s all within a short distance. Current projection for the restaurant is that it will open in the summer this year. Patrons who enter the drive-through from Route 14 will need to circle the building, while those using the entrance on Jandus Cut Off can drive straight in. There will be no walkup service, nor are they currently entertaining the idea of expanding the restaurant at this location in the future.

Marengo OK’s new quarry By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

MARENGO — After the Marengo zoning board voted to approve the plans for an additional Quarry in Marengo in October, Marengo City Council voted in favor of the annexation of said land on Mon. Feb 8. The approval comes over a year after the land was acquired by Super Mix Inc., in conjunction with Supper Aggregates, in January 2015. The quarry will be built at the southwest corner of Route 23 and Pleasant Grove Road. The city has agreed to annex the 80 acres required for the quarry itself into the city. The entire 255 property has special-use permit for mining and zoned as manufacturing. The city approval was not unanimous. The expectation for the quarry is to operate for 20 to 30 years as a quarry. Following that and assuming all the minerals have been extracted from the area, the land could be a small body of water for a neighborhood development that may occur at a later date. The roads and entrances surrounding the quarry will be maintained

by the land owner, not the city. The city’s annexation agreement for the land requires that Super Aggregates pay for fees related to the annexation and zoning costs up to $10,000. The agreement also spells out that the owner pays .05 per ton to the city. That accounts for sand and gravel or any other material excavated from the area. Additionally, they must pay $50 per acre at the time annexation occurs. The city will be including the money from the quarry as revenue annually, with a projection of $45,000. The proposed plans keep the quarry from being visible from the neighboring roadways. The entrance is expected to be across from Meyer Road on Pleasant Grove. The new quarry will have an existing quarry neighbor to the south, which is owned by Prairie Material Aggregate. The only potential change on the horizon at this point would come if Meyer Road is moved. In the event that were to occur, the proposed entrance will need to be reconfigured. An estimate for quarry completion is yet to be provided.

Publisher seeks stories from local folks BOONE COUNTY — Hometown Memories Publishing Company intends to save a big slice of local history before it’s lost forever. Karen Garvey, Senior Editor at Hometown Memories Publishing, is asking local folks to share their memories for a living history book. She invites anyone with yarns about the “good old days” in Northwestern Illinois to write them down and mail them to her for possible publication in the book. The hardcover coffee table book will contain tales of bygone years from people who actually lived them. To encourage participation, Garvey is offering a $250 award for the most appealing story. There will also be two $100 runner-up awards and a cash award for best picture. “I’m not looking for genealogy,” Garvey said. “What we want to save are true stories about things that once were commonplace but are virtually unknown to today’s generation. The contributor’s

descendants will love them for it. Life today is not what it used to be.” For example, any golden-ager could tell an interesting tale about things like wringer washing machines, downtown cowboy movies on Saturday, radio drama programs, feed sack dresses or old fashioned outhouses. “Stories like these are not only great fun to read, especially for old-timers, but they’re usually left out of the official history books. I hope some of these books will still be around in 200 years so that people will know that old-timers were more than a name or a faded picture. But that we were real people with real lives,” Garvey said. Especially wanted for the book are stories that involve humor, odd, unusual, frightening or mysterious events, romance stories (“How I Met My Spouse”), local myths and legends and ghost tales. The deadline for story submission is April 30.

When he got home that night, his wife asked if he had been drinking at lunch. “No, you know me better than that,” Bob replied. Lori asked that question because, in the middle of the day, Bob had been slurring his words – a sure sign of over-work and sheer fatigue. The following day, Bob turned in his notice and quit. Bob & lori promptly took an unanticipated vacation to Canada. On their way back home, they stopped at a store similar to the one they have now. “My wife and I fell in love with the idea.” Some research found ‘The Olive Tap’, which was just beginning to consider franchising. A year later, their franchising program was worked out and the Sherry’s opted in. “Our customers experience incredible taste and quality as a result of our proprietary olive oil evaluation process and strict standards. All of our Extra Virgin Olive Oils are tested to meet or exceed U.S. and International Standards. No heat, steam or chemicals are used to extract the oil (cold pressed).” The olive oils are artisan produced, mono-varietal and custom-blended to exhibit a full range of flavor profiles from mild to robust. “The flavored olive oils are produced using the ‘Agrumato’ or ‘Infusion’ methods for authentic taste.” This ensures that they have exquisite flavor while retaining their well-known and clinically proven heart-healthy, cancer-inhibiting health benefits. The Olive Tap will work closely with you to ensure you like the flavor you will purchase. It will also provide recipes so you can create superb flavors in your vinaigrettes and marinades. For an extra “wow” factor, you can also find gourmet olives, bread dippers, culinary accessories and cookbooks while you are visiting. For special friends and unique gifts, The Olive Tap offers personalized labeling for weddings, showers, anniversary celebrations and private or corporate events.

Super ads fall short of being super

E

verything about the Super Bowl is super. Super teams. Super players. Super stadium. Super day. Super parties. Super national anthem. Super halftime show. Super fans. Super nacho cheese sauce in my slow cooker. And of course, my personal favorite, super commercials. When it comes to the Super Bowl, football is only part of the day. Advertisements during the big game have become so popular they create a conundrum for viewers. When to replenish your beverage – during the game or during the commercials? You really don’t want to miss either so most of us do what I call the penalty flag dash. The hype surrounding a 15 or 30 second spot for Doritos is almost as exciting as the game itself (not to mention the birth of a baby). The anticipation grows during the days preceding Super Sunday. Which will have the better ad – Coke or Pepsi? Who’s not going to be themselves until they eat a Snickers bar? How will the Clydesdales and Labrador pups tug at our heartstrings this year?

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE

=Unfortunately for me, they didn’t. The majestic horses weren’t teamed with little puppies in the name of selling beer. Instead the company opted for a British actress who lectured viewers saying people who didn’t listen to her message were a, “shortsighted, utterly useless, oxygen-wasting human form of population.” While her message was a fine one, I’m not sure how calling millions of people useless will lead to increased beer sales. But I’m no advertising guru. Even so, I would have preferred a few puppies. In a year where the Panthers faced the Broncos, it seemed fitting there were a number of ads that featured animals. I’m always in favor of a cutesy, clever critter commercial. You’ve got to love the inge-

nuity and inspiration that went into the wiener dog ad. It takes nothing short of creative brilliance to come up with the idea of dressing a wiener dog like a wiener. And then (wait for it…) multiplying the effect with dozens of wiener dogs and having them run toward people dressed as giant bottles of ketchup, mustard and other assorted condiments. That’s the exact sort of unique cleverness I tune in to see each year – even though this one made me lose my appetite. I enjoyed the talking grizzly bears, especially the one that claimed to be vegan. (Gotta love the sarcastic humor of bears.) Another favorite was the sheep singing a classic Queen song. A cappella. In perfect harmony. Who even knew sheep could sing? The marmot spot pushed a bunch of cuteness buttons. Plus it educated a few of us about marmots, which I’ve always called ground hogs. Prior to last Sunday, I’d never even heard of a marmot. Varmint, yes. Marmot no. Not that I’m mistaking one for the other. But if it looks like a rodent and walks like a rodent…

I’ve saved the best for last. One word: puppy-monkeybaby. By creating a creature with the head of a pug dog, the body and tail of a monkey and legs of a baby (complete with diaper) the ad coined a new term for all things weird in less than 30 seconds. Plus the little critter had a rattle and wasn’t afraid to shake it. I used to be afraid of clowns. Now I have to worry about a puppy-monkeybaby hiding under my bed. The Super Bowl: more than 100 million people tuned in this year – some to watch the game, some to watch the commercials (and all to eat nachos). Now we wait. For a whole 12 months to see which teams make it to the big game and which commercials to our flat screens. Like many of us, I’ll be watching eagerly to find out. Because as effective as the marmot and monkey-puppy-baby were, next year I really hope they bring back the horses and the puppies. The love-hate relationship with my messy desk is now love

T

here’s no good or bad, no right way or wrong, however it takes some unraveling of firmly established beliefs to get tothat conclusion. For example ,some adults feel guilty if they don’t clean their plate at meal time. Leaving food signifies being ungrateful. You have to eat every morsel because children in other countries are starving. The idea of wasting food feels like you should go to prison or hell. But when you can take a step back and survey the situation from right here right now, cleaning your plate does not have to be mandatory. Maybe cleaning your plate when you have overserved yourself is not good for you. That food can be tomorrow’s lunch, the dog’s dinner, or go to the compost pile. Simply notice how you feel on this topic. Truly there is no right or wrong, only the meaning we attach. For most tasks, including eating, we operate on autopilot. We hold on to beliefs we don’t even realize we have. If you were raised to clean your

Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST

plate, you might notice someone at a restaurant who leaves food and you silently judge them. Or, someone else might judge you who licks the plate clean as a bit extreme and assume you had to fight for every drop of food when you were young. Oh, the stories we tell. The good news is we are the ones in charge of editing. I used to get down on myself for my messy desk. At the end of a busy day, there were papers, papers, papers, pens, phone, waters glasses (yes, more than one), reading glasses, file folders, sticky notes. A week could go by before I put things back into their proper place or create a new client file or address all the sticky note to do’s. Yet I would berate myself

for the mess. I felt like a chump. Who am I to tell anyone how to organize anything when my desk is a mess? A chat with a former client set me straight and I am forever grateful. “Ugh, my desk is such a mess!” I exclaimed. “So what’s wrong with that?” she replied. That gave me pause. I assumed the entire world thought a messy desk was “bad” and such a statement didn’t require explaining. “Why can’t you look at a messy desk and see it as a sign of success?” Ingrid asked. That stopped me dead in my tracks. Piles of paper equaled “bad,” not success. A “good person” always kept things neat and tidy. That was my story. “What is on your desk?” Ingrid continued. “Papers, piles of papers. Notes from client conversations. I jot down pertinent ideas and capture golden nuggets they say as we talk.” Ingrid set me straight. “When you look at your desk, see all your clients and all the love and good work that is happening

there. A messy desk means you are busy helping a lot of people. That is a wonderful thing. A desk with no papers on it would mean you are not doing anything. A clean desk would not be a good business.” Hmm. Time to edit my story. “Don’t you think Einstein had a messy desk?! Do you think he cared?” That made me laugh. I know what’s in my piles. I address my to do list. I create more order when it feels right to do so. So today, I smile. I see my messy desk and know it’s the result of a wonderfully busy successful day. I wouldn’t have it any other way. (Kelly Epperson Simmons is delighted with the piles on her desk and will file them as soon she sends in this column. And checks Facebook. And gets a snack. Boone County Expo advertises local businesses, services By Matt Helm Reporter

BELVIDERE — The Belvidere Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual business exposition the Boone County Expo (BoCo) at the Community Building Complex of Boone County on Saturday, Feb. 6. The event featured two floors of vendors equipped with business information and samples, as well as food for purchase on the lower level. “I come to the BoCo event because it helps get the word out for my business but also I find it helps me keep connected to the other vendors here who give me work,” Deb Kemp said. Kemp owns Fast Lane Threads, which offers custom screen printing and embroidery. “We do a lot of local business logos,” Kemp said. “At this event I do printing for the Boone County Council on Aging, the Main Street Players, the Gardeners Club and the Veterans Association just to name a few. I’m one of the few businesses here; a lot of the booths here are for service oriented organizations.” The Community Building saw a constant flow of foot traffic as people perused the different booths, many of which were interactive. The Boone County Arts Council displayed original artwork by students from Belvidere North High School and patrons could vote for their favorite. “The Boone County Expo absolutely helps get our word out there, especially for older people like me who aren’t all that savvy with social media,” Boone County Arts Council President Sherry Lindquist said. “Our mission is to enhance the arts and enhance life by advo-

cating for the arts in Boone County.” The Boone County Arts Council encourages those interested to look forward to the Student Art Show in May. Also advocating for the arts at the Expo were the Main Street Players, Boone County’s community theater organization. “We’ve been doing shows here for 21 years I believe,” Vince Melillo, one of the vice presidents of the Main Street Players, said. “It’s a good way to get together and meet a lot of nice people. It’s fun and it’s local and it brings something to the community.” The Main Street Players are putting on “The Odd Couple” Feb. 12 through Feb. 14 and Feb. 19 through Feb. 21. The

show is double cast with an all male and all female performances, with half-priced discounts for those interested in seeing both versions of the show. “’The Odd Couple’ is a classic and we think audiences will get a kick out of it,” Melillo said. “We get people who have never done shows before and who have never acted, helping work on the set, painting, building, ushering and working with the sound. You develop a lot of different skills and in the process make a sort of theater family.” Information about tickets and times can be found at mainstreetplayersofboonecounty. com. The Boone County Expo

featured 58 booths, including community organizations, businesses, colleges, hospitals and even politicians. Manley’s Belvidere Ford and Lincoln advertised their new location. “We have a guessing game for how many keys are in the jar and the person with the closest guess gets a year of oil changes,” Stephanie Jones said. “We are the second oldest Ford dealership in the world and I think it is important for us to be involved in community events to let people know what’s new with us. We have a fantastic new location that is fresh, new and modern. Our show room is bigger so you can fit more cars. It really reflects how we want to present our-

selves.” Brothers Jack and Tom Ratcliffe represented The Grange, well known for sponsoring the Boone County Fair. “We do community service projects throughout the year,” Tom Ratcliffe said. “We are promoting the Flora Grange. All seven chapters own and operate the fair, but we are always looking for new members. This spring we are working on the Safety Town event for Boone County kids to learn about bicycle, weather and other safety workshops.” The Boone County Expo covered a wide scope from local businesses to the arts, agriculture and beyond, showcasing the many worthwhile services Boone County has to offer.

Urban moms have been invited down on the farm in an effort to enhance their understanding of where the food that citizens are eating comes from. A collaborative effort has been established by the Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois corn, soybean, beef and pork producers.

or two, or several,” Nichols said. During Natasha Nichols’ presentation, I gained an insight of how vital programs like this can be. I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm. So, as a farmer, I sometimes forget how unfamiliar some consumers are with the farming practices. I recently saw a quote from Damian Mason, a motivational speaker, thatdirectly follows this concept. “Only one percent of Americans are farmers and 85 percent of America is so far removed from agriculture, they do not understand what we do, even when we tell them.” I now understand that for those who do not know, the processes we, as farmers, use on a daily basis to grow the most reliable, available, and reasonably priced productsmay be worrisome. that not only talk about farming habits, but take consumers to the farm and give them the opportunity to see for themselves farming practices in action are very beneficial. I feel society as a whole can profit from an “open barn” policy. Learn more about this program at www.watchusgrow. org and check out the Ag All Around Us event on Saturday, March 5, hosted by the Discovery Center in partnership

with the Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau. This event is to celebrate National Agriculture Week (March 13 through March 19). EAST PEORIA — The weekend of Jan. 23, I had the opportunity to attend the Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders Conference hosted at the Embassy Suites Hotel in East Peoria. The IFB Young Leader Committee planned a jam packed conference for their members ages 18 to 35. The conference included, Matt Rush, a motivational speaker, on “There’s a Snake in My Bumper”, Ashlie Miller and Neil Mylet on “Dreaming BIG with Rural Roots”, breakout sessions held throughout Saturday, silent and live auction, and much more. Through the breakout sessions held on Saturday, I was able to listen to Natasha Nichols, a Chicago blogger who finds interest in sewing, cooking, and trying new things. In 2013, this city mom of four had the opportunity to participate in the Illinois Farm Families Field Mom project. This program welcomes Chicago-area mothers to local farms to answer the moms’ questions about how food is grown. “The Field Moms will tour four Illinois farms and an Illinois grocery store between February and October to see how farmers care for their animals and the environment,” Linda Olson, Consumer Communications Manager with the Illinois Farm Bureau, said. According to Olson, over the past five years, five groups of Field Moms have “taken a tour of a pig farm, corn and soybean farm, dairy farm and beef farm. They ride along as crops are planted and harvested. While there, the Field Moms will have a chance to speak with farmers and food producers who will answer their questions about healthy food and nutrition.” During Nichols time as a Field Mom, she had the opportunity to visit the Old Elm Farms in Sycamore, Ill. On Old Elms Farms, Steve and Jolene Ward raise hogs. “Our family farm is part of the Illini Farms network – a larger family farm that works with contract growers to raise pork. We take care of young pigs after they leave a nursery. When the barns are full, we have a total of 3,000 pigs that we raise to market weight (250 to 300 pounds),” Steve Ward, a member of the Illinois Farm Families, said. Going into the program, I thought that I might be pummeled with information that was one-sided. “Thankfully it wasn’t,” Nichols said. “We met farmers from both sides of the GMO stance, and both were able to present their viewpoints – some were passionate – with great detail so that we as consumers, could make better informed decisions on choosing our food from the grocery store.” Nichols described the large amount of information that she gained through the experience. “All farmers don’t subscribe to the same way of farming at all. Lots of farms are fam-

ily entities,” Nichols said. “The women and children are involved heavily, sometimes even being the head farmer, we often think of Pa tending to the farm and Ma tending the house. Farms have gone technical. Lots of GPS guided planters to make the most out of the acreage and ensure that no row is overlooked, or planted in twice.” Nichol’s left the program with some very valuable information. For example, “I learned that chickens that are marked FRESH not FROZEN are most likely gluten-free, because they haven’t been injected with any type of broth prior to freezing,” said Nichols. “It’s the broth that has components of gluten, which makes marking packages gluten-free a bit extra. I’m not saying that we can eradicate all misinformation with just that one fact, but it was a starting point for me to share. None of my family has gluten sensitivity, but it was information that I could pass on to the many friends who are sensitive.” To see such passion about the agriculture industry from a person who’s not directly involved with production agriculture was very inspiring. The Illinois Farm Families Field Moms program, along with hosting tours to local farms, hosts a day of giving for the women participating in the program. “We volunteered at a local food bank, and I was able to take my oldest son, Nathaniel so that he could see what goes into providing food for families that may not be able to make ends meet for a month
