Diva’s Attic

I love this shop,” says Rayanne Lee. “Great, unique finds at reasonable prices. I really like to shop local and this place is a terrific spot that meets my regular shopping needs for gifts and personal treasures.” Diva’s Attic originally opened eight years ago in Woodstock, at a location on Main Street. It remained there for a year and a half before the three partners who owned it moved the shop to 106 N. Benton Street on the historic Woodstock Square. This move was made to improve its retail location. Two years ago Stephanie Drougas became its sole owner. Her former partners opened a shop just up the street. “I’m leaning more toward new apparel, home furnishings and home décor,” says Drougas. “I work with local artisans, jewelry, furniture and unique consignments.” Customer Julie Caldwell Downie says, “Stephanie was wonderful! So nice to come in and feel like we’ve been friends for years. I bought two lovely necklaces that I love.” She also promises to return soon. “There are some new lines coming in for spring,” Drougas tells me. “There’s some really fun stuff like Sanuks sandals which are made from recycled yoga mats. The ‘Dear John’ line is new. It comes with a note.” The note is actually a ‘Dear John’ letter. The gal is breaking up with him because he has “ruined every nice pair of denim I’ve ever owned.” Whether you are looking for clothing that truly expresses your personal style or home décor items that elevate your surroundings to the next level, Diva’s Attic is definitely worth checking out. Diva’s Attic can be found online on Facebook. Or you can reach the store by phone at 815.338.3482.

Pioneer Center for Human Services imperiled By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
MCHENRY — Pioneer Center for Human Services is a 501(c)3, non-profit charitable organization that provides direct services to more than 4,800 individuals. The organization also provides education and outreach to schools and community organizations reaching over 10,000 additional individuals. The Pioneer Center has several locations in both McHenry and Woodstock. “We engage people of all abilities through innovative, effective, compassionate services. We employ, develop and support
exceptional people to achieve individual and organizational excellence. We are committed to being progressive industry leaders. We govern our resources with integrity to realize our mission & vision.” The lack of an Illinois State budget has had a crippling effect on the Pioneer Center. Approximately 78% of the Center’s funding comes from government institutions. Because of the state budget issues, only a small part of that revenue has gotten to the Pioneer Center and it has quite often been delayed. Currently, the State of Illinois owes millions of dollars to the
Pioneer Center. Some of the programs crippled by this situation are: respite care, group homes and at-risk youth mental health services. In many cases, this means that the Pioneer Center has been providing services to thousands of people for months without payment. Although they have been trying to absorb the financial blow gracefully, the programs and the clients are starting to be affected. *As of February 15, the Madison Group Home clients have been merged with the Wheeler Group Home and the Madison Group Home will be closed. * On March 2, Traumatic Brain
Injury Services will be transitioned to the Epilepsy Foundation of North Central Illinois. * On March 18, adult psychiatric services will close and over 1200 people will need to find new providers. * With each change or closure, the Pioneer Center will be reducing staff. If the State budget impasse continues much longer, these changes are only the beginning. The Pioneer Center is asking for your help to keep the 18 behavioral health programs and the 14 developmental disability programs open. You can help by contacting
your local legislator and by writing to your State legislator. The Pioneer Center is offering templates for postal mail and email for your letters to your representatives in local and State positions. These templates can be found at www.SavePioneer.org, a community campaign to raise awareness and funds to keep vital services and programs alive during the State budget crisis. They are also asking for donations of any size to help the Pioneer Center though this difficult situation. Further information can be located online at www.pioneercenter.org or call 815.344.1230.

Area school to host 5K benefit for suicide prevention By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MCHENRY COUNTY — 2015 was a year riddled by suicide deaths in the McHenry County community. Two teens within District 155 committed suicide in March of 2015. There were also suicides in the area by adults which made headlines due to their graphic nature. As a result, the Richard F Bernotas Middle School in Crystal Lake will be hosting a fundraiser to help combat suicide in the form of a 5K run/ walk. The fees generated from participants will be donated. The 5K, which will take place at Lippold Park on Sun. May
1. Named ‘Bernotas Viking Strong 5K’ with the tag line “Break the Silence”, the race will begin at 8 a.m. sharp, and will end once all participants have reached the finish line. The fees for participation are in waves. The first wave, which runs through March 15, is $35 per adult, $25 for 13 and under, and $5 for students at Richard F Bernotas. Following the March 15 cutoff, the fees go up to $45 and $35 respectively for those outside the school until the day of the race. Day of registration will be $50 per person. Bernotas students will not have a fee increase. The funds will be dispersed
to the NAMI, or the National Alliance of Mental Illness. The goal is to make people more aware of the rising depression rates in teens and young adults to help abate the occurrence of suicide in our area. The 5K is one of many events held in the county bringing light to the burdens people feel when depressed in recent years. In 2014, a benefit concert was held in the Woodstock Square for the same purpose; raising awareness. Community involvement is key in helping continue these types of events. Registration for the race can be done online at https://register.itsracetime.com/
MercyRockford Health System breaks ground on new Cherry Valley clinic By Matt Helm Reporter
CHERRY VALLEY — The MercyRockford Health System held a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of its Rockford Health Physicians Cherry Valley clinic, located at 1475 S. Perryville Road on Feb. 12. “Improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve is central to our mission, and we are continually researching areas where health care services are needed,” President and CEO of MercyRockford Health System Javon R. Bea said. “We are excited the digging has begun and soon construction will be underway. Before you know it, we will be providing Cherry Valley and the southeast quadrant of Rockford a beautiful clinic with medical diagnostic services close to home.” The project will cost an estimated $3.5 million. The 8,000 square foot facility will provide care for all ages including family medicine, podiatry, lab and x-ray services and sports medicine. “Cherry Valley was one of the areas we assessed needed health care services,” Bea said. “Family and sports Dr. Brian Michalsen will relocate his practice to this new location. The YMCA will be our next door neighbors which is kind of neat, so we look forward to treating sports injuries from there as needed.” According to the drawings and proposals the new building will feature “floor to ceiling windows in the spacious lobby, providing energy efficient construction to support the green initiatives of MercyRockford.” The project will bring six new positions to the facility. The Cherry Valley location is expected to be complete in the fall of 2016. MercyRockford also has plans to open a new regional specialty referral hospital and medical center on I-90 and Riverside Blvd. “Senator Dave Syverson and I met with Governor Bruce Rauner to share with him a summary of the tremendous contributions the MercyRockford project on I-90 and Riverside Blvd will
make to the Rockford region and to Illinois. To say the governor was excited about our project is an understatement,” Bea said. The new hospital will feature a “state of the art” women’s and children’s hospital. “The new hospital reflects our commitment to providing the highest level of care for women and children in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin,” Bea said. “The location is convenient for patients on both sides of the Illinois/Wisconsin border. Additionally the facility will provide jobs for physicians, caregivers and support staff.” The hospital will cost $485 million, making it the largest project of this nature in Rockford. MercyRockford promises economic growth and viability for Rockford and the state of Illinois, including 1,500 new
jobs and 300 acres supporting the economic development of hotels, restaurants and convenience stores. MercyRockford is the largest provider of Medicaid services. The women’s and children’s hospital will generate nearly $30 million annually in referrals from Wisconsin facilities that will “allow for the continued hospital services on the west side of Rockford.” The Cherry Valley facility will refer its patients to the 1-90 and Riverside Blvd. location. The hospital will finish construction in January 2019. “The new hospital will benefit our entire region,” Bea said. “We are very excited to offer such a wide array of new specialists to meet the needs of our patients.” More information on the MercyRockford Health System can be found at mercyrockford.org.
Another Wisteds closing the doors By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MCHENRY COUNTY — Having started with three locations in McHenry County before merging with PigglyWiggly a few years ago, the Wisteds chain will be down to a single store come March. The Woodstock location announced the intent to close at the beginning of February. The decision comes after the Huntley location was closed within the last year. Following the closure, the Marengo store will be the only to remain open. Until the store is gone for good, they will be offering discounts on all merchandise in the store, excluding tobacco and alcohol products. As of mid-month the discount was 20% off each item. They will not be restocking anything between now and closing to have as little unclaimed as possible. Store hours will continue at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until February 28. The store was first opened approximately 10 years ago. There has been no direct acknowledgement as to why the store is closing, but it is likely due to the large number of alternatives in the Woodstock area. Jewel, Wal-Mart, and Aldi have locations within a short drive of the Wisted’s storefront. All of those locations have a large offering than Wisted’s did as well. The store’s lease ends with the passing of the month. The store’s employees, approximately two dozen, will be without employment as well. The lifespan of the Marengo store seems more promising than these two. Huntley’s location also had to battle with Jewel, Wal-Mart, and Aldi locations nearby. The Marengo store only has one competitor, Sullivans, which is on the opposite end of the smaller town. Wisted’s has more ties to the community in that area. The storefront currently occupied by the Wisted’s location will be available once Wisted’s clears out and there is potential for the space to come with incentives for new businesses in hopes of growing the economy.

Hearing loss doesn’t have to be a problem BOONE COUNTY — Hearing loss can be a life altering affliction that is a common occurrence for people worldwide.
According to the Center for Hearing and Communication, “48 million Americans have significant hearing loss,” 14 percent of which are in the change of life between 45 and 64-years-of-age. The odds of hearing loss only
increase with age. One out of three people will experience some degree of hearing loss after the age of 65 and two out of three people will experience certain degrees of hearing loss after the age of 75. In Illinois alone, there is an
ing on me, slobbering on my face, licking my neck and fondling me. I love him and it’s all okay with me, but I sure don’t need any touching from anyone else. When Mel comes home, I’m all sucked out!” Because our culture sells lots of products based on romance, we’re doomed to think we want stuff we really don’t want when it comes to it. What we really want is love and companionship. We want a cozy fire, long walks on the beach or in the mountains, and time to share good food and good times with another person. But advertisers want us to want boats (romance), diamonds (romance), fancy cars (romance) and fine clothes (romance). If you were looking for a mate to spend your life with and you had to write out what you want, would you ever say: “I love long walks on the beach in a designer coat and shoes, dripping in diamonds, with keys in my pocket to a Maybach Exelero (eight million bucks) to drive to my waiting yacht?” No, love is not champagne and fancy yachts, but we’re pulled to consider it. Look at what this person who was trying to sell yachts had to say: “The yachting life is one filled with romance, luxury, relaxation and class. Today’s yachts are filled with more technology, gadgets, and amenities than most five-star hotels. In them you can find bars, swimming pools, hot tubs, 1000 thread count linens and oh so much more. Here are the ten most
expensive yachts in the world.” Okay, I went through the list and I did want the octopus. That’s my friend (well we’re fellow Washingtonians) Paul Allen’s yacht. A little-known fact about Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen’s superyacht, which he calls “Octopus,” is that it houses two submarines. One can hold 10 people and drive for up to eight hours. The other can be controlled remotely. It’s been loaned out for Google Earth’s “Explore the Ocean” project, as well as for documentaries on Discovery Science Channel. That’s pretty cool, but now it’s off the subject of romance. Carl Jung said, “The fact that we say ‘romance’ when we mean ‘love’ shows us that underneath our language there is a psychological muddle. We are confusing two great psychological systems within us and this has a devastating effect on our lives and our relationships.” In the book We, by Robert Johnson, he writes, “The task of salvaging love from the swamps of romance begins with a shift of vision. Real relatedness between two people is experienced in the small tasks they do together: the quiet conversation when the day’s upheavals are at rest, the soft word of understanding, the daily companionship, the encouragement offered in a difficult moment, the small gift when least expected, the spontaneous gesture of love.” With babies and Johnny Mathis behind me, I put romance in its proper place years ago. Of course I get vicarious fixes watching Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant and Richard Gere (not a threesome), but instead of wishing I were in their shoes, I’m able to shift my vision and just enjoy their drama while I luxuriate in my clean, cozy peaceful home with my husband of 28 years in whose happiness is vital to my own. That’s love. As Robert Heinlein wrote in his 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land: “Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” That’s so simple, isn’t it? The happiness of the other is essential to our own and we can practice that without a yacht, a fancy car, or Louis Vuitton luggage. And don’t forget the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. When romance is gone

xperts claim romantic love lasts from 18 months to three years. Mother Nature must know this so once she makes a connection; she has to work fast if she wants more babies! In 18 months she can put out one baby and one on the way (giving the mother a little recoup time) and in three years she can produce three. Done! That’s what happened to me anyway and I blame it all on romance. This will date me, but I have three children thanks to Johnny Mathis. When he sang Misty and those luscious tones flowed from his lips to my ears, “Look at me, I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree,” bang…I was pregnant with Michael and wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d come out bi-racial I was so in love with Johnny. Chances Are (one of Johnny’s biggest hits) rang in Peggy Ann and Wild is the Wind pulled Joanna from her non-physical place in the universe to a place in our home. The marriage lasted 15 years mainly because my ex was a workaholic and gone most of the stint and well, I was in love with Johnny. Mother Nature knows what happens after babies. Romance flies right out the window and it’s mainly the baby’s fault. Ask any nursing mother if she needs anyone to touch her. One mom told me something that bordered on pornography if you didn’t know she was talking about her infant son. “Every two hours he’s suck-

SENATE WEEK IN REVIEW: February 8-12
SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois General Assembly welcomed President Barack Obama to the Capitol Feb. 10—nine years to the day he announced his candidacy for President in downtown Springfield—to speak about the need for bipartisanship and reforms to the political process. Obama is the just the fourth sitting president in Illinois history to speak to the General Assembly. Occasionally joking about his time as a former State Senator, from 1997 to 2004, and reminiscing about memorable moments with colleagues from both political parties, the President stressed the need for compromise and encouraged state leaders to set aside rancor and embrace bipartisanship to accomplish good things for the people of Illinois. President Obama called Illinois the “microcosm of America, where Republicans, Democrats, Independents and good people of every faith and ethnicity share certain bedrock values.” He called on the General Assembly to listen to all of these diverse voices to help “bridge differences” and find common ground on the state’s most important issues. Republican lawmakers and the Governor have consistently expressed their willingness to compromise on a budget and reforms in order to end the state’s current budget impasse. To date, the state’s legislative Democrat leaders have refused to come to the negotiating table on any reforms. It is my hope that the President’s message of bipartisan cooperation and compromise will resonate so we can work together to address the significant challenges Illinois faces. President emphasizes need for redistricting reform In his speech, President Obama not only called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to solve our state’s problems, but also stressed the need for redistricting reform. Redistricting reform is an initiative proposed by Gov. Bruce Rauner and long supported by the Senate Republican Caucus, which has spent years introducing proposals to change Illinois’ current process that allows elected officials to draw the state’s legislative and congressional boundaries. We have long underscored a point the President made during his Wednesday address, when he declared that, “American politicians should not pick their voters, voters should pick their politicians.” School districts statewide waiting for Senate President’s next move School districts across the state will be nervously watching Senate President John Cullerton’s next move after he told WBEZ during the week, “I don’t think any school should be funded until Chicago schools are funded fairly.” Such a statement makes some wonder if legislative Democrats plan to hold hostage funding for downstate and suburban schools in an attempt to bail-out Chicago Public Schools with nearly $500 mil-
lion in additional funding. President Cullerton has proposed a state bailout of Chicago Public Schools (CPS), which are facing a $480 million budget shortfall. Senate GOP lawmakers have stressed that they will not bridge the gap for the ailing school system at the expense of downstate and suburban communities. Chicago schools already benefit from sweetheart deals that suburban and downstate schools don’t receive. A recent report from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) confirmed serious inequities exist in the state’s system of education funding, which Senate Republicans first highlighted in a 2013 report. According to ISBE, during the 2014-2015
school year, Chicago Public Schools received $256 million more from a special block grant than they would have if they were treated like every other school district in the state. According to the report, “CPS received $474,870,400 from FY 15 and FY 16 appropriations….CPS would have received $219,301,959 had the district been reimbursed in the same manner as other districts.” When looking at Chicago Public Schools enrollment numbers, despite only serving about 19 percent of the state’s student population, CPS receives approximately 36 percent of the combined statewide appropriations for special education; free lunch and break-
fast programs; low-income students; early childhood education; and through a windfall from the Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax and the PTELL adjustment. In the 2015-2016 school year, Chicago Public Schools’ overall funding for these six grant lines provides $565 million more than CPS would receive if funding was consistent with student enrollment. Illinois Senate Republicans Go Red in February During the month of February, my colleagues and I are working to raise awareness about ways to prevent heart disease in recognition of National Heart Month. While heart disease certainly affects both men and women,
the risk factors are much higher in women between the ages of 18-55. Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. Senate Republicans will be joining members of the Conference of Women Legislators and health officials in wearing red for the annual Go Red Day at the Capitol on Feb. 17. The goal of the event is to spread awareness of heart disease in women, and to encourage them to schedule a WellWoman Visit with their doctor to get a full overview of their heart health.
Where’s the peanut butter? I
t was a normal unassuming typical Tuesday, the day the peanut butter went missing. I couldn’t believe it myself. Although looking back, it shouldn’t have been too big a surprise. But I’m jumping ahead of the story. I enjoy a piece of peanut butter toast on occasion. Last Tuesday was going to be one of those occasions. I took out the bread and the toaster and opened the cupboard to fetch the peanut butter. It was gone. I was puzzled at first, thinking perhaps someone put the peanut butter in an alternate location. I looked behind other items on the shelf but the tea bags and hot cocoa were not hiding the peanut butter. I checked the likely places in the kitchen: the fridge, pantry and cupboards and came up empty. I went to my boys’ bedrooms and looked on the dressers, bookshelves and under the beds. There wasn’t a ground peanut to be had. I even rummaged through

the garbage. Maybe someone tossed the peanut butter in there. Stranger things have happened. I’ve found cutlery, plates and cups in the garbage on prior occasions (but that’s another article). After all my searching, I remained – in a word – peanutbutterless. (And hungry.) I was perplexed. We don’t purchase the little snacksize peanut butter. Our jar is economy-grade and hefty. There weren’t many places one could stuff a large jar of peanut butter. Nor did I think someone had eaten the entire jar. That would take some doing. The people living with me are capable of enormous consumption. They are mostly teenage boys and teenage
boys are notorious for their eating aptitudes. I don’t want to brag, but my boys can down an entire box of Triscuits while waiting for the oven to preheat so they can cook and eat a whole pizza (or two). And that’s just an afterschool snack. But a nearly full economysize jar of peanut butter would be a little much – even for boys with gargantuan snacking talents. Still, I knew I hadn’t touched the peanut butter. It had to be one of them. It was a mystery, and my middle name is practically Scooby Do, so I did what any ordinary, 2016 CSI-inclined mom would do. I sent a group text: “Who took the peanut butter?” I typed in the frustrated-face emoji to further communicate my angst. My husband, who is well versed in our weird and wacky life because he has also retrieved forks and spoons from the garbage, replied with the smiley face emoji. That guy gets me. I had to smile.
Over the years we’ve learned sometimes you have to laugh at the oddity of any given situation. It’s either that or go crazy. And if we went loco, who’d be around to search for the peanut butter? Within three minutes of sending the first text, I’d heard from all the innocents, who were adamant about their peanut butter deficiencies. Then I got the message I’d been waiting for. The confession. Indeed, one child did take the entire jar of peanut butter – for a school project. What can a mom say to that? School projects trump breakfast any time of the day. I beamed with pride; my son went to the effort of remembering he had a school project. Then I reached for the strawberry jam. My stomach was rumbling and the toast was just about ready. The Chinese New Year has ushered in the year of the monkey
M
ake that the fire monkey. Each zodiac animal rolls around every twelve years so it will not be monkey time again until 2028. The emphasis this go-round is the element of fire. Fire monkeys are known to be ambitious and adventurous, a good omen for the year for us all. The color red is part of the big celebrations in China, as it chases away bad luck. I perhaps can add more red to my wardrobe. Perhaps red lipstick or red streak in my hair. Now that would be fiery. It’s fascinating to me that the Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world, as is “regular” New Year’s Day, which shows we like to party and that “new year” is arbitrary. China does follow the Gregorian calendar but the ancient Chinese calendar, based on lunar phases, solar solstices, and equinoxes, remains traditionally significant. Families come together to feast and pray and give thanks for their blessings. Always a good thing.
Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST
We in the Western world like to look for guidance from the Chinese astrological calendar as it may carry more weight than run of the mill new year resolutions. I was born under the sign of the dragon, as was my prince. I like being a dragon, as it is the only sign that is a mythical creature. Dragons are said to be lucky, flexible, eccentric, imaginative, artistic, spiritual and charismatic. The attributes for each of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac are all positive, of course. We may think of a rat as yucky, but those born under that sign are given the characteristics of Intelligent, adaptable, quick-witted, charming, artistic, sociable. If someone calls you a pig,
you can claim if you were born in the year of the pig that your qualities are honorable, philanthropic, determined, optimistic, sincere, sociable. How we view our animals shows our cultural bias. I love this kind of stuff but it reminds me how much we look outside of ourselves for validation. We want to know the horoscopes and predictions for the year ahead. How about we say: It will be as good as you allow it to be. In my “research” for this column, I found the same information on Chinese New Year posted over and over across various sites. I googled “predictions for 2016”. There were articles on the presidential election and the economy, but I clicked on the one mentioning Nostradamus’s predictions for 2016. The article opened with “if the world hasn’t ended by 2015….. Hmm, not much psychic ability there. Let’s make our own predictions. We’ll have a new president in 2016 and still will have an economy. We will have weather. We also have our own
internal economy and our own thermostat. I choose my world, my way. (We Dragons are eccentric, after all.) I have come to see that when I look for the best, I get even better. And when I look for the worse, I get that too. More of our life is own doing than we realize and it doesn’t matter if you were born a sheep, an ox, or a monkey. Enjoy the celebrations. Look for the serendipities. Latch on to the confirmations of who you are: “Why, yes I am brave, just like the tiger” or “You bet I am the epitome of punctuality. I was born under the sign of the rooster, you know!” Have fun with the Chinese New Year. Just plain have fun. Don’t wait for a calendar or horoscope to tell you so. for the United States to come back stronger than ever. “When President Obama spoke to the General Assembly on Wednesday, he invoked the legacy of Lincoln in order to promote a better politics for the nation. I believe that this better politics should start here in Illinois. We need to put aside the petty partisan games that have dominated Illinois in the last year and come together to heal our state from this self-inflicted budget crisis. The people of Illinois deserve better. “When the Civil War con-
cluded, President Lincoln did not attempt to settle any scores or humiliate his defeated opponent, though many wanted him to. Instead, he focused on uniting a broken nation so that it may once again rise to become a shining example for the rest of the world. If he could do this during those trying times, surely the governor and legislators can do the same under less difficult circumstances and come up with a budget we owe the memory of our state’s greatest statesman that at the very least.”
