The Pigs R Us Catering company was popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Owners Bob Packard and Kent Thomas created their own BBQ sauce for the business. They realized they needed to stop doing weekend events if they wanted to spend any time with their wives and children. So they closed the business and went on to other jobs. Packard and Thomas retired from those jobs six years ago. Still friends, they developed Two Fat Guys Gourmet Barbecue Sauce based on their original recipe from their previous business, Pigs R Us. That original flavor is now known as their ‘Spicy’ flavor of BBQ sauce. “Spicy is great on chicken, fish, steak, everything,” Packard tells me. “We are proud of our all natural ingredients. WOODSTOCK—State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, delivered a letter on March 4, 2016 formally requesting McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi petition for the appointment of a special prosecutor to fully investigate questions raised by Franks and Louis Kosiba, head of the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), regarding the pension benefits awarded McHenry County Board members who may not meet legal requirements for eligibility. Franks also requested today that IMRF begin proceedings to remove members of the McHenry County Board from the pension system that may be deemed ineligible. “The allegations being made against members of our county board are very serious in nature
and deserve a full investigation,” said Franks. “We have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that taxpayers are not paying lifetime pension benefits to anyone who is not eligible. When such pension abuse is suspected, taxpayers deserve an independent investigation to establish the facts and protect their interest.” Documents released by Franks and Kosiba earlier this week show 18 of 24 current members of the county board signed affidavits that they worked the numbers of hours necessary to qualify for IMRF although there is no evidence that they have done so. IMRF guidelines require the county to conduct annual audits and evaluations to determine if the individuals are actually working these required hours. Franks’ request that the
county share the results of these audits revealed that no such audit has been conducted. McHenry County requires 1,000 actual hours worked in order to be eligible for pension benefits, but IMRF indicates that it is unusual that part-time elected officials meet this requirement. IMRF requires participants to certify that they have worked 1,000 hours if they are seeking a taxpayer-funded pension. The affidavits signed by McHenry County Board members indicate that any attempt to falsify proof of eligibility can be punished as a Class 3 Felony. The State’s Attorney of McHenry County serves as the lawyer for the county board and therefore cannot investigate the matter himself due to a conflict of interest.
District 155 to pay City of Crystal Lake CRYSTAL LAKE — Over two and a half years after the bleacher debacle began for Crystal Lake South High School, the resolve is finally in sight. The school and city have reached an agreement where the school will pay fines in the amount of $260,000 for the violations incurred by the construction of bleachers in 2013. Following this decision, the school now has final numbers for both the city as well as the neighbors who filed suit in the first place, bringing closure much more near for the situation. Per McHenry County Court’s previous ruling, the fines could have been over $5 million due to the length of time the bleachers remained intact after the order to have them removed was invoked. The fees left a wide range, and per the lowest per-day amount, the city could have been entitled to a minimum $600,000. The $260,000 final price was less than half that projected minimum amount. Fines could have been $1,000 per day. Ultimately, the funds for the fines will go toward covering legal fees incurred by the city during the legal process. Utilizing the money in that manner we alleviate some of the costs which will be incurred by residents in the Crystal Lake area. Earlier this year, the neighbors’ received a similar amount for their legal fees during the battle. The amount received by the neighbors, the plaintiffs in the original dispute, was $273,000. As of this time, there are no more expected financial woes in this case. The only piece of the puzzle left presently unsolved is the bleachers themselves. A plan is in place, but the bleacher construction will not be finished until later this year if all goes according to plan. District 155 hopes to have the properly zoned and approved bleachers completed in time for fall Football during the 2016-17 school year. The City and Building/Zoning committees have greenlit all proposed plans and now that the weather has improved,
construction could begin any time. The case has helped set a precedent that schools must
abide by the zoning rules and regulations put forth by the cities they reside in.
