n March 5, 2016, the Hemmen’s Cultural Center in Elgin hosts the Applause Dance Competition. The Goin’ Solo Dance Teama wins the Platinum Award for their performance of ‘Chandelier’ (the video) by Sia. Choreographed by Rio Ottolino, this event is the team’s first performance in front of a live audience. Rio also brought home the High Gold award for her solo performance of ‘California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas. “There is an old quote that says to ‘dance like no one is watching.’ I say, ‘not to dance like no one is watching, but to dance like everyone is watching.’ When I dance and choreograph, I want the dance to mean something to the audience,” Rio says. “I don’t just want to be another studio in a playbook.” “I am also very excited to have been invited to perform at the upcoming Harvard Business and Community Expo on April 9. We will be performing there around noon and then again at 1:30. My team will be joining me along
Double the Fun with the Illinois Railway Museum By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
UNION — The Illinois Railway Museum is beginning its 2016 season with not just one but two events on Sunday, April 3. Firstly, it is Opening Day at the IRM with hours from 10:30 am until 5:00 pm. The museum will be open weekends in April. It will be open seven days a week beginning Mother’s Day, May 8. It will be open daily until the end of September, then open on weekends only through October. A full schedule of events listing dates when electric cars, steam trains, diesels and trolleys will be running is available online at www.irm.org. Special events such as the 26th Annual Vintage Transport Extravaganza (August 7) and A Day Out With Thomas (August 13 & 14, 20 & 21 and more can also be found on this site. Secondly on April 3, you can join the members of IRM in a train straight out of the ‘70s as we tour the Chicago Transit Authority’s “L” lines. We’ll ride CTA’s historically painted, 2400 series cars on our excursion which will cover the north, south, west and northwest sides of the city.
The cars used for this expedition were retired from regular passenger service on October 31, 2014, after 38 years of service. We will be riding in cars which have been restored to their original Bicentennial-inspired livery. As an added treat, a special prize will be awarded to someone who dresses in 1970s fashions. Pull out your elephant bells and disco duds, use hairspray for that authentic “big hair” look and enjoy a blast from the past. Fare will be $50.00 per person and only 140 advance tickets will be sold. If any tickets are available on the day of the excursion, the price will be $55.00. The train will leave at 8:45 am from the Dempster-Skokie terminal on the Skokie Swift/Yellow Line. It will return at about 6:00 pm following an entire day of sightseeing by train. This historical jump backwards in time is a fundraiser to support preservation and restoration of the Illinois Railway Museum’s CTA transit collection. Tickets can be purchased online at www. irm.org The Illinois Railway Museum is located at 7000 Olson Road, Union, Illinois, 60180.

MCHENRY COUNTY — The primaries for our November presidential election were held on Tuesday, March 16 for Illinois residents. Although turnout was high, there were a number of problems with the electronic polls set up at various locations in McHenry County. As a result, the McHenry County Clerk, Mary McClellan, issued an immediate emergency order to have polls remain open until 8:30 p.m. throughout the county. Unfortunately, some locations did not receive word and closed to the voters at the original 7 p.m. time. The two locations which did not remain open until 8:30 p.m. were in Algonquin and Crystal Lake. Voters were turned away at Bethany Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Algonquin. The cause for extended voting times came after the electronic check in at voting sites was reported to be malfunctioning in the morning. The check-ins were the only thing affected by this outage; nothing relative to vote count was problematic. The townships affected by the
technical mishap were Algonquin, Chemung, Door, Dunham, Grafton, McHenry, and Nunda. The earliest reported checkin error happened shortly after polls opened. Polls opened at 6 a.m. and the first report of the issue happened at 6:30 a.m. The system had been operating properly to accommodate early voters on Monday, March 15. Original poll closing time was 7 p.m. which would have allowed 13 hours of voting to occur. Due to the glitches, the additional 90 minutes were added to accommodate for the error. Some of the people who were told polls closed at the affected locations were able to vote after a lengthy delay. There were several reported issues with the voting itself, most commonly with limited ballot availability. Several reports of voters only receiving the option to cast ballots for the federal races were acknowledged. Some people in Johnsburg were unable to cast a vote on a proposed tax referendum. In regards to the presidency, the winners of primary voting were Hilary Clinton as democratic front runner, and Donald Trump on the republican side.

MCHENRY — Louis A. Bianchi, McHenry County State’s Attorney, announces that Michael Tatera, 54, of West Allis, Wisconsin was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. On January 12, 2016, a McHenry County jury found Mr. Tatera guilty of a two-day trial. The evidence presented showed that Spring Grove Police stopped the defendant after being observed driving around barricades and through a closed road in downtown Spring Grove. Once stopped, the defendant was evaluated for DUI and was arrested after showing signs of impairment. The defendant has been convicted on eight prior occasions of the offense of DUI in Wisconsin, thereby making this conviction a Class X felony. This case was investigated by the Spring Grove Department. Assistant State’s Attorneys John T. Gibbons and Robert Ladd prosecuted the case.

Food vendors staying safe, legal at farmer’s market DEKALB — As farmers markets continue to grow in popularity and visibility, they are attracting more producers with a wider variety of farmfresh goods for sale. Increased product diversity at more farmers markets is a great thing for shoppers seeking local foods, but it also means that more attention will be paid to keeping those consumers safe and healthy. As such, farmer’s market vendors in the state of Illinois have some new and updated regulations with which they need to be familiar. “Local food producers have a great reputation for providing consumers with fresh, tasty, wholesome products,” Andy Larson, Local Foods and Small Farms Educator for University of Illinois Extension, said. “We should all work to keep that reputation by staying up-to-date on the guidelines that maximize safety and transparency for our customers.” Join Extension Educators Marilyn Csernus (Nutrition and Wellness), Andy Larson (Local Foods and Small Farms), and Grant McCarty (Local Foods and Small Farms), as well as DeKalb County Health Department personnel Greg Maurice (Director of Health Protection) and Dawn Nance (Food Inspector), for a practical discussion of farmer’s market rules and regulations. Topics will include: the updated Cottage Food Law, including what prepared products can be legally sold at a farmers market; the Illinois Farmers Markets Food Product Sampling certification, including sanitation guidelines and how to get trained; transparency provisions for displaying origin of products being sold at farmers markets; and requirements for safe transport and sanitary handling of “potentially hazardous foods” This program will take place on April 8 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Blank Slate Room at the DeKalb County Community Outreach Building, which is located on the DeKalb County Health Facility campus at 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. Registration is only $5 and can be completed online at go.illinois.edu/farmersmarketregs. Please register by April 5 to guarantee a seat and materials. Please call (815) 732-2191 with additional questions. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please contact your local Extension office.
