Musical Opportunities

By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

“I

f the purpose of an education is to systematically develop the mind and capabilities of every child, it is clear that music has a unique and necessary role to play,” says Donald A. Hodges, University of North Carolina. Music has long been known as a way to improve a child’s learning ability. “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning,” Plato said centuries ago. “Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education.” Which cause me to wonder why music has been removed from many school’s curriculum. Parents and children who are interested in adding music to the learning process must now find their own independent source of music learning. One of these places is the Player’s Bench in Crystal Lake’s historic Old Town. Located at 87 N. Williams Street, The Player’s Bench opened in 1973. It was founded by two dentists who couldn’t find a place for their own children to learn to play musical instruments. It didn’t really take long for them to realize that they were better at the practice of dentistry than they were at running a music business and they sold the store to Joe Ornelas, a music teacher and professional musician, in 1976. Ornelas expanded and remodeled, gradually adding more

teaching studios, a sound room, a guitar repair shop and a rental department. In 2014, Ornelas retired and the shop came under the new management of music teacher Jason Erlenborn and his wife, Molly Clough, experienced in retail on Williams Street and lifelong Crystal Lake resident. Today, the Player’s Bench has over a dozen experienced teachers who are also professional musicians. They come from a

wide array of backgrounds and teach many different styles of music. They can instruct beginners, intermediate and advanced music students. They offer lessons in brass, woodwind, percussion and stringed instruments, including keyboards. You can learn music theory, songwriting and improvisation in jazz, pop, rock, funk, bluegrass, country and blues. Lessons are offered Monday through Saturday.

“Music programs can literally remodel children’s brains in a way that improves sound processing which could lead to better learning and language skills,” says Nina Kraus of Northwestern University. The Player’s Bench boasts instrument repair specialists with decades of experience and the Rental Department can offer both sound and lighting equipment as well as rental instru-

ments. The store is open 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday and from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Saturday. Whatever your needs for music lessons to musical performances, The Player’s Bench has a lot to offer. You can find them online at www.playersbenchmusic.com or on Facebook at Players Bench – Music Store.

oodstock has many restaurants and fast food establishments. However, when I am on the go in Woodstock’s Historic Square, one of my favorite places to stop is at Swiss Maid Bakery. Not only are their sandwiches fresh and flavorful but I can pick my dessert as well. They serve a choice of cookie with each sandwich but I can never seem to leave without adding a doughnut or other pastry to my bag. It’s no wonder that the desserts are so good when you consider the fact that the ownphoto by Anne Eickstadt ers are the fifth generation They always have freshly made cookies on hand to grab and go or to bring to an event. of bakers in the family. McHenry County home price averages increase in 2016 By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

The average price of home sales in McHenry County in 2016 compared to 2015 shows over a 7% increase for the first quarter. The average price of a detached home closing in the first quarter of 2015 was $191,070 according to Midwest Real Estate Data, while the first quarter of 2016 was $205,597. The number of homes sold increased as well, from 720 in 2015 to 754 in 2016.

Values are on the rise and market time is down in comparison to recent years as well. The total volume of homes moved in the first quarter of 2016 was $155,020,321 for detached properties. The 2015 total was $137,570,571, meaning over $7 million in increased sales for the first quarter alone. Market time was down 10 days at 130 average compared to 140 previously. The highest sold home in the first quarter 2015 was $680,000,

New grocer taking over Woodstock Wisted’s location By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

After the Woodstock Wisted’s location closed its doors in February, new grocer ShopFresh, will be opening its doors in May. Wisted’s closed the doors at 330 N. Eastwood Drive after 10 years of operation in the Woodstock community and two dozen employees were left without positions following the closure. ShopFresh is hoping to be able to hire some of the people who were working at Wisted’s at the time that store closed. The store’s closure was the second in a years’ time for the Wisted’s name. The only Wisted’s store still operating is the Marengo location now housed under the Piggly Wiggly brand. The ShopFresh lease began April 1st. As part of the appeal to open in the storefront, Woodstock City Council will be voting on a proposition that would provide tax incentives for the company. The current proposal outlines two-years’ worth of reimbursement to the store from city sales tax up to $200,000.

The incentive would help alleviate the cost of modifications to the location which are projected to be $500,000. The store’s plans include offering unique, homemade stuffed meats on site as well as having six-day a week delivery for fresh produce. By offering more fresh and unique products, the company hopes to differentiate itself from the other grocers nearby. Struggling sales were part of the problem that caused Wisted’s to close its doors. The modifications to the building would allow the company to focus more on the products they specialize in. ShopFresh has already been granted $4,000 from the Harvard-Woodstock Enterprise Zone to get the process started. Assuming plans progress in a timely fashion, the May opening would leave the storefront closed for just over two months. That is a big appeal for the city of Woodstock in regards to approving the proposed incentive. The longer a storefront remains closed or unused, the harder it becomes to re-generate community interest.

compared to $925,000 this year. 2016’s lowest sold home was recorded as $12,299 compared to $7,500 in 2015. In both 2015 and 2016, the price range with the highest number of sales was $150,000-$199,999. In 2015 that number was 157, and this year 175. Attached homes in McHenry County continue to move on a smaller scale. In 2015, the first quarter moved 159 properties with an average market time of 95 days and average price of $114,909. The highest sold home was $310,000 and the lowest was $32,000. $18,270,509 was the total volume of attached home sales last year in the first quarter. This year, 170 homes were closed with an average market time of 83 days. Volume was up to $21,854,560 and the average price was up to $128,556, with the highest being $324,500 and the lowest $40,000. Properties on the market during the first quarter of 2016 was a staggering 2,480 detached homes and 417 attached. 968 detached and 202 attached homes were under contract at the end of the quarter. The highest priced listing was for a single family detached property listed at $18,775,000, with the minimum being $1. With a mild winter, the number of homes on the market is noticeably higher. Spring is noted as being the most booming time of year for real estate, so the number is bound to increase as weather improves as well. The housing market appears to be steadily improving as 2016 continues.

Harvard Motorola building being auctioned By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

After Motorola closed the doors on its Harvard location in 2003, the property has sat completely vacant. There have been many potential uses thrown around in the time since then, however none have panned out. The 1.52 million square foot property, originally built in 1997, remains vacant as it begins the 13th year since Motorola operations ceased. The building is the largest commercial property in McHenry County. The property has been purchased in the years since Motorola closed, however the owners have yet to put it to use. Current owner is a company called Optima International based out of Miami, Florida. Optima spent less than $17 million to buy the building during the beginning stages of the economic slump in 2008. The projected cost to replace the structure as it sits exceeds $250 million. The location saw over 5,000 employees daily at the peak of its use in 2001. When Optima purchased the property five years later, immediately tried to market it for sale, but has not spent money on upkeep or improvements to appeal to commercial buyers in the area. The

company has a tax lien in place for 2014 and did not heat the property in the last several years, nor has it kept up on general exterior maintenance. Now, eight years after their purchase, the property is being auctioned off online by Ten-X.com (previously auction.com) and JLL, a commercial real estate brokerage headquartered out of Chicago. The bid starts at a mere $2.7 million between April 18th and April 20th. The tax lien against Optima is significantly less than that amount. The property has not only four separate structures, but dual heliport pads, cafeteria, daycare facilities, fitness center, auditorium, and outdoor trails as well. Assuming the property sells at auction, the use would need to be approved by the City of Harvard. The city’s Economic Development Corporation hopes that the auction will draw a buyer with the intention of using the property instead of allowing it to sit vacant any longer. The economic potential for job growth is substantial. Even if the building only used 1/5 of the employees Motorola used, that would still be an incredible draw for potential work in the area.

VIEWPOINT Monday melancholy starts out the week Page 4 - April 14, 2016 / McHenry County News

O

h, the dreaded Monday. We all experience and endure it; although depending on your specific schedule, your Monday might fall on a Thursday. Still, we understand the concept of Monday melancholy (or Thursday melancholy, as the case may be). I’ve never been one to shy away from Mondays. It’s as good a time as any to get things done and put things off. But I have to confess: lately they’ve been getting to me. I find myself feeling listless and unmotivated on the first day of the standard workweek. You know what they say, when life gives you lemons… In this case, when life gives you a Monday, I say make it a three-day weekend. Unfortunately, that’s not typically possible. Like it or not, we’ve

all got to deal with Mondays upwards of 50 – or maybe even more – times every year. Science backs me up on this: Mondays are unavoidable. Research has proven that each morning when you wake up, there is a 14.2857 percent chance the day will be a Monday. You can’t argue with numbers because numbers don’t lie – and not just because they can’t talk. I for one am not going to give 14.2857 percent of my days over to melancholy. There are good things about Mondays. Sure there are. You just have to click your heels together and believe. Monday marks the beginning of the workweek. Opportunities for accomplishing tasks and attaining goals spread out in the days ahead, waiting to be conquered. Monday is filled

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE

with possibilities. Going to work on Monday gives you a nice break from weekend chores like scrubbing toilets or cleaning out the garage. A Monday morning commute gives you a break from life, but not traffic. It can be a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future, but not send or receive text messages. You can rock out and sing loudly to the radio on your choice of station without your kids or spouse changing it on you,

which can be irritating, even on a Saturday. As you are making your commute, remember to smile. It’s Monday! If you do, you’ll be ahead of the majority. According to Internet lore, most people do not smile on Monday until 11:16 a.m. and that’s probably because by that time they are anticipating lunch. Monday is a good day to put things off until tomorrow. You’ve got lots more time to complete the project with a Friday deadline, which seems a long way off on Monday. Procrastination and Mondays go together like wine and cheese. While procrastinating on a Monday, you can take the chance to catch up on all the social media activity you missed over the weekend (during your breaks and lunch, of course). You can view photos

of all the exciting things your friends did while you were home cleaning the garage. Monday rhymes with funday, which is a great time to test the pairing of wine and cheese alluded to earlier (after work, of course). Sometimes the sun is shining on Monday. In fact, according to highly accurate Internet statistics, it is the least rainy day of week. That makes it a Monday sun-day, which beats out rainy days and Mondays any day of the week. Finally, Monday’s a great day to count your blessings. When you do, I’m pretty sure you’ll decide Monday’s not so bad after all. Besides, at the end of the day you’ve only got three more to go – until Friday.

The brain works in mysterious ways when it comes to song lyrics

I

f you are not familiar with Pandora online radio, you create your own station by typing in the name of the artist you want to hear. Pandora plays that group or artist and other songs by folks in that same general mood or genre. Imagine my delight the first time we created a Barry Manilow station. Song after song was pure joy. The Barry was followed by The Carpenters, then Air Supply, then Lionel. On and on, old delights came on. Bread. Chicago. Neil Diamond. Kenny Rogers. Big names of my once upon a time mixed in with lesser remembered singers like Paul Davis’s “I Go Crazy” or “Baby Come Back” by Player. (Yeah, haven’t heard those in forever but you will know the words.) Of course I know all the words to every Barry song, every Karen Carpenter line, and I can lip sync Air Supply like nobody’s business. But I was surprised at all the songs that came on that I had not heard in years (decades) and had forgotten even existed,

and yet I could sing along word for word. The brain works in mysterious ways. I cannot recall what I had for dinner last night, but give me a song from 1974 and I know it. And the 80s too. I had forgotten that music producer Quincy Jones put out an album, but when “Just Once” came on, I knew every word. James Ingram was the singer for that one. I looked it up and it’s from 1981 when my teen brain was obviously a sponge. For certain things. Ask me about geometry and I will remember….not much, but words to songs are etched in my cerebral cortex. The science behind it would say that perhaps it was the time of life or the emotion attached. Or maybe they’re just great songs.

Come on in...the door is open!

Bike Trails, Antiques, Parks, Museums, Golf and More in Northwest Illinois

But oh yes for emotion. Young hairbrush microphone divas across the land would lip sync along to these songs, long before there was karaoke or lip sync battles. It was just young girls clutching their hearts and singing songs of heartache and happily ever after. Not for show, just for the joy of it. I can’t help myself. I close my eyes, and silently belt out with deep emotion and shoulder heaving along with my beloved singers. There is nary a clunker in the bunch as the Pandora plays on. I don’t

However, that same parent would not be allowed under FMLA to take time off for the death of a child. In fact, the average bereavement leave for a person who

WOODSTOCK—On Saturday, April 9th, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County (EDMC) will conduct a recycling collection for fluorescent tubes, Styrofoam, electronics, and batteries from 9 a.m. until noon in front of the Soil & Water Conservation District building at 2222 S. Dead Street, just south of Route 14, in Woodstock. They continue to collect certain items, which are not usually accepted by curbside programs, and which would be harmful to the environment if put in a landfill. Specific donation amounts are requested for household alkaline and rechargeable batteries ($0.50 per pound), car batteries, fluorescent tubes ($0.50 - $1.00 each), TVs and computer monitors ($0.50 per pound up to $30 is asked for each TV or monitor). Donations offset the costs of transportation and proper recycling for those particular items. The group will accept clean polystyrene foam such as Styrofoam, VHS and cassette tapes, CDs and DVDs, packing peanuts and reusable, un-popped bubble wrap and electronics (most anything that plugs in or runs on batteries). EDMC will also accept any kind of cloth items, including clothing, linens and rags, clean and bagged as well as shoes, tied together by their laces and placed in the bag. Aluminum cans are accepted as a donation. Environmental Defenders’ recycling drivers are held on the second Saturday of each month, at various locations in the county. For information about the recycling schedule and types of materials accepted, visit the group’s website at mcdef.org/recycling or find it on Facebook at facebook.com/EnvironmentalDefenders. Become a new member of EDMC at the recycling drive, at the Basic or higher level, and get two coupons to recycle a television or monitor for free. An alternate site for electronics, Styrofoam, & batteries is Chicago Logistic in Elgin (847)-429-1926. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is a 501 ©(3) notfor-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and volunteer action on pollution prevention, sustainable land use and energy and natural resource conservation. Donations are encouraged and are tax-deductible as charitable contributions. MCHENRY — Did you know that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease? Unfortunately, as a nation, we’re becoming more inactive. Adults spend more time at work than ever before and according to the American Heart Association (AHA), less than 30% of high school students get enough daily physical activity to keep their hearts healthy. On Wednesday, April 6th, McHenry County hopes you will take a 30-minute walk to raise awareness for National Start Walking Day, sponsored by the AHA, which coincides with National Public Health Week, April 4-10. Research shows the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, improve blood pressure, lower the risk of obesity, enhance mental wellbeing and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. There is no right time to walk. Whether you prefer starting your day with a brisk walk., or unwinding after your day, walking is a great way to help keep healthy. Asking a friend to walk with you or taking several 10-15 minute walks each day are effective ways to help you start. For more information, visit www. heart.org or contact McHenry County Department of Health at 815-334-4510.

Open burning restrictions starting Saturdays and Sundays in April

MCHENRY — McHenry County Department of Health reminds county residents of the Public Health Ordinance restrictions regarding the open burning of landscape waste. Municipalities may further restrict or prohibit open burning; please check with your municipality. Where a more restrictive Ordinance does not apply, the open burning of landscape waste is limited to Saturdays and Sundays in April, May, October, and November from dawn to dusk. The burn area must be a minimum of 100 feet from any habitable structure and 50 feet from a detached garage, shed, barn or other nonhabitable structure. No burning is permitted when winds are greater than 10 mph. Only landscape waste generated on the site may be burned. The burning of any materials other than landscape waste, such as garbage, paper, cardboard, construction materials or animal waste is prohibited. The department of Health strives to provide a timely response to all complaints of open burning including some evening and weekend responses. However, residents may also contact any local law enforcement or fire department or fire protection district with a complaint. Agencies who respond to open burning are responsible for a variety of issues. All responses are prioritized; and an immediate response is not always possible. To report a fire that is an emergency or life threatening, please dial 911.

Daytime burglaries in Minooka MINOOKA — The Minooka Police Department is investigating a pair of residential burglaries that occurred on Monday, April 4th and another burglary that took place on Thursday, March 31st. In all three incidents, the burglaries occurred during the daytime hours when the victims have been at work, the doors to the homes forced opened with

cash and jewelry stolen. Residents are encouraged to take measures to secure their homes to avoid being burglarized. With the evolution of technology, home security options seem valuable these days, from exterior camera systems to alarm systems. A lot for the crimes we solve are because of our citizens as they are the eyes and ears of

the Village. With these recent incidents, we need everybody to keep an extra eye out for your neighbor. Anyone with information on the burglaries can call the Minooka Police Department at (815)-942-9667. Callers will remain anonymous and rewards of up to $5,000 may be given for information that leads to an arrest.

April is National Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Awareness month MCHENRY — During April’s National STD Awareness campaign McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is partnering with McHenry County College (MCC) to hold an “STD Awareness – Know Your Status” clinic at MCC. For $20, testing will be performed on Monday, April 11, with confidential results (and treatment if needed) available on Monday, April 18. The testing consists of a urine sample and a blood draw. Consulting and education is included with all testing. Each year about 20 million new sexually transmitted disease (STD) infections in the U.S. are diagnosed. Almost half of them are among young people between 15 to 24 years of age, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In McHenry County 642 cases of Chlamydia, 32 cases of gonorrhea, and 5 cases of syphilis were reported in 2015, along with 131 people living with HIV. Chlamydia is the most frequently reported STD and is known as “the silent infection because the majority of men and women experience no symptoms. Of the 642 Chlamydia cases reported in McHenry County, 67% of these

cases were in the 15 to 24 year old population. There are effective ways to diagnose and easily treat STD infections. Testing and knowledge of infection are vital to reducing the consequences of these diseases. Chlamydia and gonorrhea – the two most commonly reported infectious diseases in the

U.S. – are also among the most serious and preventable threats to women’s fertility. MCDH offers confidential STD diagnostic testing twice weekly by appointment. Call MCDH at (815)-334-4500 for more information or to schedule an appointment. To learn more about STDs, visit CDC at www.cdc.gov/std.
