Antique Shopping & Chocolate By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

S

pring has arrived and people are spending more time getting out of the house. The lure of the road beckons us. Many people are seeking out collectible antiques and vintage items while on their drive in the sunny weather. One such place to seek collectibles is the Crystal Lake Antique Mall. It is home to dozens of dealers of antiques and collectibles. Its 8000 square feet of area houses items for the home such as furniture, lamps, pottery, glassware, artwork, kitchenware. It holds vintage clothing, jewelry, hats, bags and purses. Vinyl records, tools, linens, toys, World War II memorabilia, Depression

glass and other collectibles round out the various types of unique items which can be found. If you make your way from the parking lot (free, unmetered parking) entrance all the way through to the Williams Street entrance, you might find the cherry on top of your shopping trip to be chocolate coated. That segment of the building houses Mellie’s Chocolate & Co. Mellie’s delicious candies are made on the premises, fresh, homemade treats to enjoy on the spot or to take home with you. Or both. Or you can opt for their very fine ice cream. Though housed under the same roof, on the corner of Crystal Lake Avenue and Williams Street, the Crystal Lake Antique Mall and Mellie’s

Chocolate are two separate businesses. Mellie’s is open from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm. The Crystal Lake Antique Mall is open from 10:30 am until 5:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday, it extends its hours from 10:30 am until 8:30 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the antique mall is open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. It also hosts special events and Fireside Chats with experts and special guests discussing collecting antiques, restoring antiques and other topics. The Crystal Lake Antique Mall can be found online at www.clantiquemall.com or on Facebook at Crystal Lake Antique Mall. Mellie’s Chocolate can be seen on Facebook at Mellie’s Chocolate & Co. Marengo Artist is Featured Artist at Fourth Friday Event By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent

“Kishwaukee Heron” won a People’s Choice Award at the very popular Fourth Friday at Starline Gallery.

he March, 2016, Featured Artist of Fourth Friday at the Starline Gallery in Harvard is Paul Turnbaugh of Marengo. This honor gains him a plum position at a very popular, wellattended art event in which to display his artwork. In the past few months, Turnbaugh has won the People’s Choice Award for both his “Morning in the Heartland” and his “Kishwaukee Heron” art at the Fourth Friday events. If that wasn’t enough, Turnbaugh has been selected to design the State of Illinois’ Gold Star monument in Springfield to honor families who have lost a loved one in military service. “I’ll be designing all the graphics on the granite,” he says. “My son is a veteran of the Army Infantry. I paint a lot for military organizations, so I’m always painting military themed and patriotic images.” Turnbaugh is an Illinois native who headed to California for advanced art training. He returned to Illinois to raise his family and moved to Marengo a couple of years ago. His work as an illustrator led him in many directions included doing advertising and illustrating children’s books. Once he turned from illustrat-

Marengo dispatch to move to McHenry By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

On Monday, March 28, the Marengo City Council voted to approve a proposal for McHenry Police Department to handle dispatching for local calls. The vote also approved a radio upgrade for the Marengo Police Department. The move comes after the state of Illinois issued a mandate requiring a reduction in dispatch locations to be half the size in counties with over 250,000 residents. The bill, called Bill 96, addressed the use of systems which did/do not have a public safety answering point. The McHenry Police Department already handles a lot of calls from other locations. Other departments in the area which will be utilizing McHenry as the consolidation occurs include Woodstock and Harvard. McHenry currently handles Marengo Fire and Rescue services, so the move of the police dispatching to the same center makes sense. The department also handles Union fire as well as Johnsburg and McCullom Lake

Police Department dispatching. The large volume being handled by the McHenry Department generated the need for expansion. As a result, the location for dispatching has been named the McHenry County Northeastern Regional Communications Center, which has been operating for nearly a year’s time. The list of dispatching being handled by the center is likely to continue to increase as the consolidation must be completed before the start of 2017. Marengo’s current dispatch was situated out of Lake in the Hills. That agreement ends April 30 and services will be out of McHenry from that point forward if all goes according to plan. In the event of unforeseen difficulties, services will remain with Lake in the Hills until McHenry is prepared to take over entirely. The cost will increase with the move, but by less than 5% as of this time based on current numbers. Fees are subject to change based on the volume of calls received.

Continued from page 1 ing for others to painting by his choice, he could begin doing what he truly loves. He gets inspiration from nature, wildlife, hunting, fishing, small towns and rural life. “It’s far more satisfying than illustrating ever was.” This year, Turnbaugh is branching out in a new direction with his work. “I have added guitars to my art,” he says. “They’re members of my family. It’s time I did their portraits.” Turnbaugh’s artwork can be viewed online at www. wildheartland.com. He is also active on Facebook at Wild Heartland, Painter.

A rite of spring: Dance of the Woodstock at McHenry County Conservation District MCHENRY — McHenry County Conservation District invites you to witness the Dance of the Woodcock, an annual rite of spring, on Tuesday, April 12 from 7:30-9 p.m. for adults and families ages 8 and up; or Wednesday, April 13 from 7:30-9 p.m. just for adults, ages 14 years and older. Both programs are held at The Hollows Conservation Area, 3804 U.S. Hwy. 14, Cary. The woodcock is normally a very shy and elusive bird. In the spring however, the male performs a courtship display that is a joy to behold. The performance, which we will

most likely hear more than see, includes acrobatic flight, beautiful song and a floorshow. Dress for the weather and don’t be late, as he is very particular about the time and place of his performance. Registration is required by April 8. This program is free to McHenry County Residents/ $5 for non-residents. Registration is accepted online at MCCDistrict.org by phone at (815)-4795779, by mail-in and drop-off at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake or drop-off only at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
