Crystal Lake Goes Purple By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

illiams Street is flowing with the color purple. Canopies, tree ribbons, T-shirts and plants are all in shades of purple in honor of Lupus Awareness Month. Saturday, May 7, is the date of the 4th Annual Crystal Lake Lupus Fundraiser. The event is to support 18 year-old Taylor Kassel and the other individuals who live with lupus. Taylor’s mother, Bonnie, and her family are joining with the Crystal Lake community once again to spread lupus awareness. “We are the only place in the country that does this. The volunteers and community have shown their support throughout the years and the items that have been donated are spectacular. Words can’t even describe how generous the community has been.” This year offers many raffles and prizes while a DJ sends lively music wafting up and down the street. Red Nose Day I

By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

t’s time to get your funny on and help Comic Relief make a difference for kids who are in desperate need of help. Red Nose Day has raised over $1 billion over the last 25 years to help children and young people be safe, healthy and educated. On May 26, people across the country will be wearing red noses, running FUN-raisers and even watching the two-hour NBC special with top comedy artists and musical performers from around the world. Comic Relief, Inc. in the USA works in conjunction with its sister organization Comic Relief UK in “a shared vision of a just world, free from poverty and the mission to drive positive change through the power of entertainment.”

A Red Nose Day pen is perfect for those who wish to join in but can’t wear the red nose at work.

“Created by writer/director Richard Curtis in 1985 (“Love Actually,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “About Time”), the idea of Red Nose Day was built upon the foundation that mass media and celebrities can help raise money and awareness of poverty to save and change millions of lives.” In 2015, Red Nose Day raised $23 million. This money was split - with half used here in the United States addressing the immediate needs of young people living in poverty. The other half has been spent in some of the poorest communities in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Funds in the United States were given to food banks across all 50 states to help feed hungry children and families. Money was spent to get kids the resources they need to learn and read and have a safe place to go after school. American children in low income and homeless families now have access to essential medicines and care. In Africa, children under five are receiving lifesaving vaccinations and families now have clean water and sanitation. Over $1 million was spent for disease preventative drugs. Children, pregnant women and others

abroad gained access to malaria drugs, bed nets and HIV drugs. The number of people dying of malaria in Africa has decreased by more than half since 2000. HIV infections in Africa decreased by 33% between 2005 and 2013. Funds from Red Nose Day helped support the Legal Resource Centre in South Africa which represented the community in the “landmark legal case that ruled that land, seized under apartheid in South Africa, be returned to the people of Elandsloof” in 1996. Red Nose Day supports the prevention of domestic violence, works to improve attitudes towards mental health issues and helps young people at risk of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Funds are also

used to support rights for disabled persons and raise awareness of elder abuse. They have helped over 1.2 million children in the world’s poorest countries and Africa to get an education. They helped increase adult literacy in Uganda by 73% in 2010 alone. On Thursday, May 26, you can join comedians, celebrities and superstars in “an inspiring cultural phenomenon that unites people from all walks of life in the interest of saving and changing lives across the globe.” You can find official red noses, hats, mugs, pens and more at your local Walgreens store. Information about Red Nose Day can be found online at www.rednoseday.org or www.comicrelief.com.

The annual Milk Days festival in Harvard is operating for the 75th consecutive year in 2016. The festival began in 1942 and is one of the longest running celebrations in the state of Illinois. In response to this historic milestone, the city and committee involved in the project have chosen to pay homage to its history. In order to accommodate this year’s additions, the festival will operate for four days, June 2 through June 5 this year. Before the festival even begins, the town is also hosting an open house in honor of the heritage behind the Milk Days celebration. The open house, slated May 14, offered attendees five hours to bask in the history behind Harmilda, the town’s Milk Days mascot, and Milk Days itself. Set at Starline Factory, the open house, aptly titled “Relive the Memories”, intended to serve as a kick-off point for the 2016 celebration. Starline Factory often hosts portions of the Milk Days celebration including

the bed races and more. The open house also hosted the first ever “Harmilda’s Night Out” performance and display a variety of history in the form of awards and memorabilia from the last ¾ of a century. Books to commemorate the anniversary are also available for sale at $5 per piece. A variety of other souvenirs are being sold to help fund the open house as well. Attendees of the open house also receive an opportunity to pre-purchase their entry and parking passes for the festival. Each year between 150 and 175 people volunteer their time and efforts to make the Milk Days festival possible. This year, being four days instead of three, will require even more effort and time. Additions to this year will include an entertainment tent with live musical performances, puppet shows, and more. The festival will continue to take place at Milky Way Park. Edwards Apple Orchard readies for upcoming fall opening By Emily Hanlin Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau Ag Communications

POPLAR GROVE — For my 10th birthday, my grandmother surprised me with my very own apple tree. I know kind of an odd gift for a young girl, right? But, EMILY HANLIN to this day, it is still my favorite. When I was younger, I ate apples every day! My father and I planted my tree in our backyard and now 10 years later, we enjoy big, juicy, Red Delicious apples every fall. At the time, Red Delicious apples were my favorite. Now that I am older, I have found a few other varieties I like even more. Ken and Barb Hall of Poplar Grove have a hard time picking out their favorite variety since they have 15 to pick from in their very own back yard! The Halls are the third generation and the current owners and operators of Edwards Apple Orchard, Inc. What is now a family orchard and farm market, started out as a dairy farm. In 1964, Barb’s parents, Bob and Betty, converted their dairy operation to what would soon be a local favorite in the fall. In 1984, Ken and Barb came to work on the farm. Before they decided to come back to the family business, Ken worked as an agronomist and Barb was a high school teacher. They purchased the operation in 1990. A little over 50 years later, Edwards Apple Orchard provides a gathering place for family fall traditions. There are 16 members of the Edwards family still working

on the farm to provide seasonal fruit to the community. However, there is much more to the experience of visiting Edwards Apple Orchard than just purchasing fruit. On the farm, family activities include you-pick apples, pumpkins, and raspberries. Fresh apple cider and warm donuts are also for sale. The store offers an assortment of fudge, gifts, and specially foods that celebrate the fall season. In The Cider Cellar, you can order a BBQ pork sandwich or slice of hot apple pie. The “down on the farm” theme is really felt here as you can sit on a milk can while you enjoy your snack. Visiting the animal farm and “driving” retired tractors in the play area is always a hit with the young visitors. During the fall season, Barb and Ken play very active roles in making sure the operation runs smoothly. Barb manages over 260 seasonal employees and Ken works on the logistics Photo by Emily Hanlin of the crops and sales portion. VIEWPOINT Old, young or none of the above? Page 12 - May 19, 2016 / McHenry County News

F

or most of my life I viewed myself as old. Even when I clearly wasn’t. It’s about perspective. The memories are vague, or even nonexistent, but when I was 2 I got a baby sister. By age 3, I’m pretty sure I thought I was old. For sure much older than my sister, which I held over her head – until I hit 30. When I was 5 and someone asked my age I no longer had to fold any of my fingers in toward my palm. I got to hold up my entire outstretched hand. I remember feeling like this was a big deal (because it was!). Plus I went to kindergarten. That most certainly qualified me as old. When I was 8 I was finally allowed to ride my pink banana seat bike by myself to the corner store to buy Laffy Taffy. That sort of responsibility and

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE

independence is reserved for those who have attained a certain level of experience and sophistication in life. Hence, in my eyes, I was old. When I was 10 I reached a new level of oldity: double digits and double hands. Having two numbers in my age was exciting and practically screamed maturity, as well as the privilege of having my mom drive me to the mall so I could get my ears pierced. The age of 16 is a milestone in nearly everyone’s

oldometer. The importance of 16 candles on the cake can be summed up in two words: driver’s license. I no longer needed a parent to drive me to the mall; I could get there on my own. Anyone old enough to drive a car is old – at least old enough to drive a car. Everyone believes they are old at 18. And why not? You can do lots of grown-up things, not the least of which is refer to yourself as an adult. It’s a privilege you’ve been waiting for your entire life. At 20 you are no longer a teenager and that has old written all over it. Looking back, of course, I was probably more kid than grown up, but I didn’t know it at the time because I considered 20 old. The same goes for 25. And (eek) 30, which was a biggie for many of us.

Most of it is a blur after that. The older you get, the faster time flies. I remember my parents telling me this; I didn’t believe them. Now that I’ve become them I understand the truth of their words. Somewhere around mid30-something I found designating myself as old wasn’t as alluring as it had been when I was 8. Instead of the sweetness and privilege of Laffy Taffy, extra years meant responsibility. The prestige of a mini van. Replacing acne wash with wrinkle cream. Fighting the dreaded muffin top. Wearing comfortable shoes. Fine print that seemed finer and fuzzier. I’ve been old most of my life, or so I thought. And now that I’m older than I ever was before, I’ve decided I’m as young as I’m ever going to be. It’s a change in perspective

and it works for me. Besides, old or young, it’s what you make of it. Age may be an unyielding (and everincreasing) number, but it doesn’t have to be. Oh sure, the calendar will change and technically so will the digits that designate how old (or young) you are. But you get to decide – whether you choose to be 8 years old or 88 years young. As for me, right now I’m somewhere in between. But young at heart. Hopefully always that. ‘Life is like a box of chocolates….’ I don’t even need to finish that sentence. You just completed it for me. Maybe even with a Forrest Gump accent. You can’t refer to life being like a box of chocolates without picturing Tom Hanks sitting on that bench. Or maybe also uttering, “Mama always said….” We cannot predict what images or phrases will become part of our pop culture. Some just stick and take their place in our common lexicon. And of course, some things fade away. Pop culture refers to popular and we all know what is popular today may not be so tomorrow. “Sit on it, Potsie.” Now I’m dating myself. You may remember that, you may not, but that idiom from the television show Happy Days did not become part of our lasting

collective lingo. I would like to think that everyone knows what I refer to when I say, “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia,” but alas, some do not. Just like many people today will have no reference if I say, “Judy, Judy, Judy.” (And supposedly Cary Grant never did utter three Judy’s in a row.) (And if you under 40, Marcia is from The Brady Bunch.) My sons will make comments and I know that they are quoting some show or movie or pop culture reference by the way they say it, but I do not know the origin. And usually I don’t care. That is the real sign of the generation gap. The FOMO (fear of missing out) or not being “cool” by knowing the “in” phrases is replaced with a shrug indicat-

ing that I really don’t mind being out of the loop. Some pop culture simply becomes part of our culture. Many business coaches and motivational speakers latched on to Yoda Speak. “Do or do not. There is no try.” The Stars War world is not just fictional, it is accepted as part of what we all know. If you say a person breathes heavy like Darth Vader, people all across the world will know what you mean. It’s not a movie reference so much as

common knowledge. And my spell check knows that it’s Vader, not Vadar. There are many examples of people, places or things, that get morphed into our current world. Call someone a muggle and most folks will know what you mean, even those who don’t give a rip about Harry Potter. A muggle is someone with no magical ability, in case you don’t know. You can look it up. What I love is that these phrases and ideas didn’t exist until a writer dreamed them up. One person’s imagination launches something that takes hold and becomes part of us. That is thrilling. A writer can never predict what will get rooted in pop culture. It’s not something that can be planned or forced. It just happens. I wonder if JK Rowling gets goosebumps when she hears someone use the word muggle in daily vernacular and not in reference to her stories. When she was a struggling writer sitting at the café penning her

stories, never could she know that the world she was creating would lead to a new entry in the Oxford Dictionary. To me, that is very heady stuff. Writers make up words, but not all of them take their place in history. Catchphrases may be even harder to linger through the changing times. As of this writing, “bazinga” from The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper is not an entry in the Oxford online dictionary. Pop culture is on my mind because this week as I write is Star Wars day. May the 4th. Even TIME magazine writes about this unofficial holiday. George Lucas must feel wowed by it all. Even if you are not. May the force be with you.
