Summer Market is open By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

T

he Farmers’ Market has returned from its winter home at the McHenry County Fairgrounds to the historic Woodstock Square. Tasty, colorful fruits and vegetables have been carefully cultivated throughout the winter months and are ready for your dining and snacking pleasure. The shop vendors on the Square love May through October when they can dash across the street for fresh food for lunch and fresh groceries. The market supplies organic and home grown fruits and vegetable in season, delectable baked goods, honey, cheeses and tender, natural beef, pork, poultry and eggs. The farmers offer perennials, bedding, heirloom and ornamental plants, fresh flowers and hanging baskets. You can also find organic soaps and body products, knife sharpening, crafts, sheep and alpaca fiber products and yarn. The kettle corn vendor wagon is parked right in the middle of the action also. Established in 1982, the Woodstock Farmer’s Market set up in various locations until 2007 when the farmers approached the City Board to allow the market more room and visibility. In 2008, the market gained access to the Park itself and music became an established part of the farmers’ market. The Winter Market from November through April began in 2010 to create a continuous supply of local produce throughout the year. This award-winning Farmers’ Market is known as a ‘producers’ market, which only allows products that are grown, produced or made by the local Farmer or Artisan. Each vendor space is inspected by a member of the Farmers’ market Board of Directors. “That means that you will only find the freshest, tastiest, in-season produce and healthy locally-grown plants. Of course, our other products; beef, eggs, pork, honey, wine, cheeses, etc. are all grown or produced locally by the vendors you’ll meet at the market.” You can try new and different farm-fresh vegetables each time you visit or you can opt for the Community Supported Agriculture option and purchase a share/subscription to receive an agreed upon amount of fresh produce, meats or eggs on a

Motorola building in Harvard sold at auction By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

HARVARD — The auction for the former Motorola building began at just $2.7 million on April 18. The auction ended in the winning bidder spending $9.3 million on the property three days later. Motorola had built the property in 1997, and the space has been vacant since Motorola ceased operation in 2003. The projected cost to replace the structure as it sits exceeds $250 million. As of the end of the month, the property was still in escrow, meaning funds were being held and had not been transferred to complete the sale at that point. A final closing date has not been released.

The auction company, Ten-X.com, has the. The name of the winning bidder has not yet been released. Once the property closes, the owner’s name will become public knowledge in tax records. The auction occurred after most recent owner, Optima International. Defaulted on the property taxes at the site. The company spent under $17 million to purchase the site in 2008. The property was never inhabited after their purchase. In fact, Optima has not heated the property in several years which has been a cause for concern. They originally listed the space for sale shortly after closing in 2008. What the building will become under the hands of a new owner remains to be

seen. Accounting for 1.52 million square feet and including outdoor amenities such as two helipads, walking trails, and ponds, the space could be used for a number of things. At the peak of Motorola’s operation, daily foot traffic exceeded 5,000 people. If the site becomes operational

again, the economic impact and number of jobs created would be substantial in the Harvard community. The property includes a cafeteria, daycare facilities, fitness center, auditorium, and spans across four buildings, several of which are multiple stories in height. The prop-

erty is the largest commercial space in McHenry County. Since the identity of the bidder has not been released, there has been no indication what the purpose for the property may be. The City of Harvard will ultimately be able to approve or deny its use once the new owner takes over.

Human Race sees over 1,000 participants By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

CRYSTAL LAKE — In its sixth consecutive year, the McHenry County Human race was able to bring even more people together than in years past to help raise money for a variety of causes. The race allows anyone to participate and donate proceeds to a nonprofit of their choice. Where most fundraisers focus their efforts to one charitable foundation, the Human Race gives

Franks measure to provide property tax relief passes house SPRINGFIELD — Continuing his fight to provide property tax relief for struggling homeowners, state Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, passed legislation out of the House on Thursday that will help limit the growth of property taxes in Illinois. “For years, I have been fighting to reduce property taxes, especially when home values decrease because our taxpayers and homeowners desperately need relief,” Franks said. “If property taxes keep rising like they have in recent years, homeowners will simply not be able to stay in their homes, which would be devastating to communities across the state.” Franks’ bill expands the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (PTELL) statewide, with the exception of home rule units of local government, and freezes future tax levy increases. In 1991, state legislators passed PTELL as a way to protect homeowners from exorbitant tax increases due to rising home values. Under the current law, the ceiling of 5 percent or the rate of inflation on any property tax increases has gone from protecting

to many. The race, which covers a length of 5K, donated to a total of 67 charities in with the funds raised in 2016. The event took place on Sunday, April 24 at the McHenry County College in Crystal Lake and was organized by the Volunteer Center of McHenry County. The proceeds for the event first go toward covering its expenses and helping promote the volunteer center itself. The remaining profits, approximately 60 percent, are donated

to the chosen charities. Each participant’s registration fees, which varied between $30 and $45 per person, helped make the event such a huge success this year. In the first five years, total donations exceeded $360,000. Donations can still be placed online at http://www.mchumanrace.org/Donatetoacharity.htm until Thursday, May 5. Once donations have closed, the Human Race will provide the year’s total donation amount.

Projected numbers are were between $70,000 and $75,000 following the conclusion of the race itself. The race went smoothly with mild weather in the mid 50’s. With over 1,100 people between participants and volunteers, the clear skies were a welcome weight off everyone’s minds. The theme of “Get Your Hero On” was clearly evident as many runners wore things like batman and superman logos sprawled across their shirts. Some took

their support all the way and donned full costumes while running. The donations went towards helping those with physical disabilities, autism, learning disabilities, daycare, sexual assault victims, animal shelters, and more. A full list of sponsors as well as more information about the Volunteer Center can be seen online at the Human Race website noted above. Hopefully the 2017 race is even better than this year!

Belvidere celebrates National Day of Prayer

BELVIDERE — May 5 is a special day – a day set aside by Congress known as the National Day of Prayer. Millions of Americans will gather at town halls, churches, post office flagpoles, and various venues to pray for their nation and their leaders. President George Washington was the first to call for a National Day of Prayer and throughout American history succeeding Presidents have followed a tradition of calling out to God Almighty for His wisdom, guidance, and blessing upon America. We are at a crossroads in our nation. America groans under the weight of unemployment, crime, immorality, war, civil unrest, terrorism, healthcare crisis, taxes, and natural disasters. This year’s National Day of Prayer theme, “Wake Up America, is a call for a return to the God of Fathers in reverence for His Holy Name.” “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.” Isaiah 58:1a. In Belvidere the National Day of Prayer the service, Circle of Prayer, will be held at Big Thunder Park at noon. There will also be a Belvidere National Day of Prayer Breakfast at the Community Building Complex at 7:30 a.m.

International Pilates Day Celebration, May 7, will feature open house and demonstrations by local Pilates Instructor Cathy Huffman. Pilates Day is an international event celebrated on the first Saturday of May every year to foster the public’s appreciation and awareness of the Pilates Method. This year, Pilates of Woodstock and Cathy Huffman will be hosting one of only three events in Illinois. On May 7 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Pilates of Woodstock is holding an open house and will be conducting demonstrations of the Pilates system of exercise at their studio in the Woodstock Square Mall located at 110 S Johnson St., Woodstock. Created in 1912 by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Method of exercise is a “whole body” exercise that involves the whole being – mind, body and spirit. Joseph Pilates believed that physical fitness was the first perquisite of health and happiness and designed exercises and equipment designed to condition and strengthen the body. Pilates is a challenging, but low impact, highly efficient system of exercise that trains multiple muscled groups at once. Focusing on developing safer, more efficient patterns of motion, Pilates provides a refreshing, full body workout that develops a strong core, creates an evenly conditioned body and improves flexibility. Used for years by professional dancers because of the efficiency and safety, Pilates is increasingly becoming the exercise system of choice for professional sport teams, elite athletes and individuals looking for a holistic approach to health and fitness. Free and open to all, Ms. Huffman will be happy to show you how the Pilates method can provide health and wellness benefits regardless of your current training program or physical condition. For more information on the World Pilates day, contact Cathy Huffman at 847-421-5244 , by e-mail at cathy_huffman@ comcast.net or visit http:// www.pilatesofwoodstock.com

Artists invited to third Annual Woodstock Plein Air 2016

T

By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

he Old Courthouse Arts Center is inviting artists to participate in a weeklong Plein Air event in Woodstock. The event runs from Saturday, May 21 to Saturday, May 28. Winners will be awarded cash prizes. Artists may submit no more than two paintings during this contest. “Plein Air” art (for those who, like me, first thought that it was simply a typo) is, “…nothing more than painting from life, utilizing direct observation to gather information, along with responding visually and emotionally to the subject at hand,” according to the Plein Air Painters of America [PAPA]. The Woodstock Plein Air event has two segments. One is the week long main event paint of a scene in beautiful Woodstock. The hardest part for the artist will be choosing which scene to paint. The town can proudly display many historic buildings, bell towers, tree lined neighborhoods, cupolas, Victorian homes and a popular farmers’ market on the historic Woodstock Square. The second segment of the Plein Air event is a Quick Paint on Saturday, May 21. Entrants will have 2 ½ hours to create, sign, frame and securely wire their painting and turn it in at the Old Courthouse Arts Center. Picturesque Woodstock has been the site of several movies including ‘Groundhog Day’, scenes in ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’, ‘The Hearts of Age’ by Orson Welles and “A Matter of Principle’ from the early 1980s with Alan Arkin. It has also been featured in TV episodes of ‘Restaurant Impossible’ and MTV’s ‘Catfish’ as well as several commercials. If producers love the look of Woodstock for big and small screen, the painter will obviously have plenty of views to choose from.

This Victorian building, the Bundling Board Inn, located just off the historic Woodstock Square might be chosen as the subject of a painting in the Plein Air event.

Anyone who wishes to enter this event must register by May 14 with a $30 registration fee. Late entrants, May 14 – 27 will pay $35. All of these paintings will be for sale. The event will end with a reception and awards ceremony on May 28, 6-8 pm. The paintings will be exhib-

ited at the Old Courthouse Arts Center throughout the month of June. Anyone who wants to support the arts in Woodstock can come and watch art being created and/or purchase the finished works to beautify your home or office. A complete set of rules and a registra-

tion form can be located online at www. oldcourthouseartscenter.org If you are interested in more information on the Plein Air Painters of America, they can be found online at www. pleinairpaintersofamerica.com or you can visit them on Facebook at Plein-Air Painters of America.

homeowners to harming them as real estate values plummeted during the Great Recession and have risen at a slower pace than before the recession. “Government at all levels must continue to look for ways to increase efficiency and cut wasteful spending before increasing taxes,” Franks said. “I look forward to continue working to reduce the overall tax burden on residents and to rein in wasteful and unnecessary government spending.” House Bill 696now moves to the Senate for consideration.
