Crystal Lake Market Opens

Harms Farm is chock-full of greenery and family crafted jams, mustard, and other delicious condiments.
By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
Depot Park by the train station in Crystal Lake is a hotbed of activity on Saturday, June 4. Canopies line the meandering walkways, each with fresh goodies to check out. It is the opening day of Crystal Lake’s Farmers’ market. My first stop is at ‘Firefly Confections’ with Sandy Aravalo and Julie Allaway. “I started the business five years ago with decorated cookies for parties, special orders and online,” says owner Aravalo. “From there, I started making caramels and wrote a book, then came back to cookies. I won the 2015 Barnes & Noble Bake Off.” Aravalo’s book “Artisan Caramels: Classic and Inspired Confections” contains recipes with step-bystep instructions. It is available at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon as well as at Aravalo’s website www.FireflyConfections.com. “I’m here for looks and charm,” Allaway tells me. ‘The Aspiring Kitchen’ booth is my next stop. Bob De Palma is the owner of
this business which makes “Food for the soul.” Today, they are offering Sushi grade tuna and Great Lakes whitefish, both smoked and fresh. “I like to be creative in the kitchen with sauces. Our fish comes from all over the world. We do all natural things, make veggie burgers, change it up from week to week,” he says. Their newest creation is “Gotta Have It Sauce.” It is vegan, dairy free and gluten free. The sauce is created with fresh vegetables and is good for dips and mixes. www. theaspiringkitchen.com From there, I visit Dawn’s Bread. “Dawn’s Bread began as a one-woman bakery which sold bread and baked goods at local farmers’ markets and fairs.” The business has grown and has become Le Petit Marche at 19 N. Williams Street, Crystal Lake. Fans of Dawn’s Bread make Le Petit Marche a regular visit to continue to enjoy the deliciousness of her baked goods. www.petitmarche.biz Harms Farm catches my eye next with its tables of plants, flowering, fruiting

Fathers Gone Fishing? By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
Father’s Day has always provided a dilemma for kids. “What do you want, Dad?” often gets the response, “Nothing” or “I don’t need anything” or some variation of this theme. This leaves kids scratching their heads, guessing, and ending up with something goofy - like a weird tie or a deep fat turkey fryer. Here’s an idea that won’t cost anything, won’t be tossed in a drawer forever and won’t set the backyard on fire. Take your dad fishing! It isn’t far. The McHenry County Conservation District is taking full advantage of the Illinois Free Fishing Days on Friday through Monday, June 17 to 20. By coincidence, these days fall across Father’s Day this year. During these four days, anglers are allowed to fish on public bodies of water without a fishing license. All State of Illinois and local site regulations still need to be followed but no license is needed. This is the perfect opportunity to learn how to fish if you haven’t ever fished before or for dads to get out by the lake, plant a fishing pole by the water and take a nap. The McHenry County Conservation District is hosting two events during this time. On Saturday, June 18, from 9:00 am until noon, the Rush Creek Conservation Area, 20501 McGuire Road in Harvard is holding a Hooked On Fishing family event. They will be holding demonstrations, giving safety tips and awarding prizes. You can bring your own equipment or borrow theirs children get first preference of poles. Children must have adult supervision. You do need to pre-register if you wish to take part in the
planned events. You can register online at www. MCCDistrict. org; by phone at 815.479.5779; visit or send a letter to Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake, 60014; or drop off your registration at the Lost Valley Visitor Center at Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood. Registration must be in by June 17 at noon. On Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19, MCCD is holding their Hooked On Fishing event at The Hollows Conservation Area at 3804 U.S. Highway 14 between Crystal Lake and Cary. Sign in begins at 9:00 am and the event continues until noon. ANNE EICKSTADT PHOTOS McHenry County News Once again, pre- You can take part in the planned events or spend quiet time by yourself out by the lake. registration is required if you want to join in on the planned demonstrations and contests. “Hooked On Fishing gives families an opportunity to try out the sport of fishing for free, as well as spend quality time outdoors together,” says Dan Hibbler, Conservation District Police Officer. It’s a great chance to spend a morning, day, or weekend of quality time with dad and, BONUS, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to give him a gift that he will enjoy and remember for years. You can get complete details at www.MCCDistrict.org.

Time goes by so fast when raising kids
y husband and I have always tried to make our family a priority. It is the one aspect of parenting we can agree on. Still, after years of planning kidfriendly vacations, chaperoning field trips to the zoo or museum, warming the bleachers at youth sporting events and attending school holiday concerts, I have the nagging feeling I could have (should have) done more. I wanted to do more. But then I got tired. Or crabby. Or with each rising and setting of the sun they grew a day older and I just ran out of time. Time. Now there’s a four-letter word that’s working against us. It’s a concept, really. When they are 2, it seems neverending. When they are 12, it feels like you’ve still got lots of time. And then suddenly they are 18 or 20 – or whatever it is that makes them adults – and it has ended: the time for reading “Go Dog Go” or the magic of the Tooth Fairy or accompanying them to the restaurant restroom or myriad responsibilities and opportunities parenting of kids when they are kids provides. Thinking back on it all, there never was enough time. My husband and I did our best, but there is always more you can do. More quality parenting to be had. And while we appreciated memorizing every line of “Toy Story” when we were watching it for the 137th time and embraced our breathlessness as we ran behind the wobbly

overs with parenthood. You only have right here, right now. You do the best you can with what you have that day – that moment – and you hope it is good enough, because you never quite know for sure. So the guilt seeps in sometimes. Okay, oftentimes. Adding to this are the parent comparison charts. Everyone seems to be able to do so much – and to post it on social media immediately. I’m glad I didn’t have to keep up with Facebook when my kids were young. This week I’m anticipating high school graduation and sighing a lot. My son came home last week with
his cap and gown. (Sigh.) And his final yearbook (Sigh.) He attended his senior banquet. (Sigh.) He is finishing up his last tennis season. (Sigh.) The senior slide show is this week. (Sigh.) Graduation is on Friday. (Deep sigh.) He is my third. You’d expect it might get easier with practice, but it doesn’t. Or maybe I’m simply a slow learner. Someone asked me if I thought I’d cry on Friday. The answer is yes; I’ll probably cry. I know I’ll cry. But we call those happy tears. Bittersweet tears that come when the privilege of experiencing a certain
moment in time causes your eyes to water uncontrollably. I will cry. But I will also relish the moment for what it is. I will hug my graduate. I will congratulate others I’ve known since they were in diapers. I will take pictures and post them on Facebook. And I will bring Kleenex. Lots and lots of Kleenex. What goes around comes around
am heading back to France. Ten years ago I was living in the south of France with my then-husband and two sons. Before going, I did not crush on France or harbor fantasies of Parisian cafes and Eiffel Tower kisses like so many people do, but once I arrived, I fell head over stiletto heels. Smooch smooch, bisoubisou, cheek cheek. Ooh la la. The food, the wine, the art, the architecture, the history, the beauty, the Old World charm, the culture, the pace of life, it all moved me. France cradled me in her arms and spoke to my soul. “Joie de vivre, the joy of living, take it home with you,” she whispered. And I did. When we moved back,
my writing career and speaking career officially took off. Talks of life in France led to talks of living your joy led to talks of writing your joy. I still speak and coach on joy and writing, but I let the French stuff fade away. I thought perhaps folks would get tired of France stories and I didn’t want to hang my hat on past “glory days.” But it keeps popping back up. Americans are fascinated with the French way of life. Rightfully so. One of the lessons in my joy life mastery program is called What Would A French Girl Do. I recently gave a talk on that topic for a women’s networking group in Chicago. We all want the quiet confidence of a French woman.

TROUBLE BATHING?
Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST Even though it has been nearly a decade since I lived as a French woman (well, an American woman with really bad French but cute boots and skirts), the need to share the secrets of that way of living is back in play. Partly because I continue to live the joie de vivre and my glory days are now my every days. Since that time away, I started on a different kind of journey, a journey into me. My path has led me to my Prince Charming and our amazing fairy tale life. I don’t need to go to the City of Lights because I have a beautiful romantic life right here. That makes people curious and they want to learn how to achieve their own version of the joie de vivre in their work life and love life. It is my joy to teach it. It is also my joy to be going back to France. For the pure joy of it. My prince and
I are taking the month of September to simply go live in the south of France. Our home base for most of the month will be Aix-en-Provence. The anticipation of it brings joy. Over the next six months, we will savor the planning and I will let you in on another secret. It has been a while since we have done a group trip, and you keep asking for one. Readers joined me in Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day in 2010 and we did an Alaskan cruise in 2012. It appears a group trip to France is revealing itself for 2017. If the idea of a magical week in the south of France (not Paris) brings you joy, pencil me in. Details will be announced when they are firmed up. It is interesting how things come back around. I thought France was part of my past, a defining part for sure, and it is exciting that it is part of my present and my future. You never know what unexpected fun lies just around the corner. Take a peek. And take it in. That is what a French girl would do. Kelly Epperson Simmons teaches and speaks on joy and writing. Invite/ Write/Share your feedback at info@ kellyepperson.com.
