Memorial Day Veterans Display By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

t all began with a simple question, ”Why do we celebrate Memorial Day?” If you ask Vietnam veteran Butch Borchardt, things start to happen. Krista Coltrin, Economic Development Coordinator of Woodstock, calls it, “A really exciting collaboration.” Borchardt and Coltrin had a discussion regarding Memorial Day in Woodstock. Then Coltrin sent out an email to Woodstock business owners. “City Hall is fantastic!” Borchardt says. “Within an hour of their email, people were calling, ‘We want to help! We want to help!’” That first hour brought in five phone calls and then word of mouth brought interest from more businesses and more veterans.
}Memorial Day is about remembering the dead, particularly veterans. It is about honoring the veterans that fought beside us. If what we are doing is educating the public, then it is worthwhile. It is an honor for me to honor them.”
— Butch Borchardt
Members of Woodstock’s VFW Post 5040 are loaning their uniforms and military memorabilia for a two week long Memorial Day display. “The purpose is to bring to light the stories of local veterans. To show our gratitude to veterans for what they have done.” “Memorial Day is about remembering the dead, particularly veterans. It is about honoring the veterans that fought beside us,” Borchardt says. “If what we are doing is educating the public, then it is worthwhile. It is an honor for me to honor them.” Krista Coltrin says, “I’m tickled about how it has all come together. The intention is to display their stories and memorabilia for a week before and after Memorial Day, depending

on the store and the veteran. There are at least eleven decorated windows on and around the historic Woodstock Square, showcasing veterans – both men and women – from World War II to the present.” Barry Mishler is one of the veterans participating. His story and memorabilia are in the window of ‘Down 2 Earth’ on the Square. “It’s quite an honor to be in the window,” he tells me. “Those people that didn’t help this year will wish they had. It’s a huge project and will be even bigger next year. Next year, I will be helping him [Borchardt] out. I’m excited about doing it.”
As you shop in Woodstock, keep an eye out for the veteran displays and read their stories. The tales of local men and women who answered their country’s call to service. Seek out veterans and thank them for putting their lives on the line to keep us safe. As likely as not, their humble response will be along the lines of, “It was my honor and privilege to serve.” Here is a little more information about Memorial Day: “Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was initiated to honor the soldiers for the Union and Confederate armies who died during the American Civil
War. Celebrations honoring Civil War heroes started the year after the war ended. The establishment of a public holiday was meant to unify the celebration as a national day of remembrance instead of a holiday celebrated separately by the Union and Confederate states.” “The holiday became known as Memorial Day and was expanded to include the deceased veterans of all the wars fought by American forces. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday.” Further information about Memorial Day can be found online at www. publicholidays.us/memorial-day.
Inaugural Bernotas Viking Strong raises over $8K By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
After announcing the inaugural Bernotas Viking Strong 5K race, no one knew how much money would be raised for the cause. Richard F Bernotas Middle School in Crystal Lake was attempting to raise funds for the National Alliance of Mental Illness and help combat the rising suicide rates in our area. The race took place at Lippold Park on May 1. The 5K run/
walk was geared toward the whole community, with special concessions on registration fees for Bernotas students to help encourage participation. Tagged with the line “Break the Silence”, the event wound up raising $8,210 for the NAMI. The donations were procured by over 400 participants who ran or walked during the event. Students were charged a flat $5 registration fee while other participants’ fees varied from $25
to $50 depending on age and sign up date. The event began at 8 a.m. and did not end until the last participant crossed the finish line. By focusing on the NAMI and the concept of suicide, the school and community were able to rally together to help eliminate a growing struggle amongst teens and young adults. The stigma surrounding suicide presents a unique challenge when discussing it
in a public forum. By holding such an event, the school was able to acknowledge the trouble and help work toward finding a solution. A student from Bernotas had committed suicide in the previous year. Students were able to speak to staff and counselors, but the 5K event was the first large group function derived from the tragedy. In addition to the 400 plus participants in the 5K itself,
there were also numerous volunteers providing their time and energy to coordinate the event. Nearly 25 organizations helped by providing donations in other ways, such as food and beverages or sponsorship for the event itself. The community really rallied together with the school to make this such a success. District 47, which Bernotas is a part of, intends to host another Viking Strong 5K in the future.

30th Annual Cops on Top
I
By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
f you are wondering why there is such a large police presence at the Dunkin Donuts shops on Friday, May 20, wonder no more. Illinois Law Enforcement is raising money for the Special Olympics with their annual jab at the cops and donuts jokes. All the police departments throughout McHenry County and the entire state of Illinois are out on the rooftops, balconies, drive-throughs and lobbies of the nearest Dunkin Donuts shops. They are drawing interest from passersby, selling T-shirts, hats and coffee mugs and handing out coupons for free coffee and donuts. All this is to help out special needs children at the Special Olympics. “The most important thing is the Special Olympics,” Lieutenant Wagner tells me. “The money raised here provides those kids the opportunity to compete and participate. We appreciate all the support we get when we do these events.” At the Woodstock Dunkin Donuts location, the landlord will not give permission for the police to be on the roof, so they are spending their time in the lobby and at the drive through. Cars are lining up to support Cops on Top and the
Special Olympics. Deputy Amy Knop says, “This is one of the fundraisers done year round for the Special Olympics Illinois. The first leg of the Special Olympics Torch Run will begin in Barrington this year and be carried to McHenry.” There it will begin the second leg of its journey throughout Illinois and continue until it reaches the Special Olympics site in Bloomington-Normal and the law enforcement officers hand it off to one of the athletes. The athlete and the officer will run together to light the Special Olympics flame which will mark the beginning of the games. The next Special Olympics fundraiser in McHenry County will be the Huntley Police Department Classic Car & Hot Rod Show on June 4. Defenders’ recycling drives held in Woodstock WOODSTOCK — On Saturday, May 14 the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County (EDMC), who has held recycling drives in McHenry County since the early 1970s, held their drive for the first time in Lake in the Hills at the Public Works Department. Thanks to their spectacular volunteers and the assistance received from Lake in the Hills, they were able to collect 11,000 pounds of TVs and monitors in addition to the other items usually collected: household and auto batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, Styrofoam, all kinds of tapes, CDs and DVDs, and used clothing and tennis shoes. More than 100 cars brought items to be recycled. Recycling drives are being scheduled in different towns throughout McHenry County for the remainder of the year. On June 11, they will be in Harvard at the Village Hall, 201 W. Diggens Street and on July 9 in Algonquin at Jacobs High School. Arrangements are being made to come to a town near you in the future. REFLECTIONS By Steve Sauders
T
he Vietnam War was brutal for those of us who fought it on the ground. Our military performed with tenacity and distinction little understood. Many people, however, blamed us warriors for an unpopular war waged half-heartedly and unsuccessfully from Washington. They clearly demonstrated what they thought of the war and those who fought it for them. Academia, the media, and the elites spurned our service while glorifying the enemy. Right had become wrong. Vocal and subtle slurs and jibes subjected Vietnam veterans to antagonism and loathing. The stigma tore open the wounds and spit on the graves of my buddies. These blows to my dignity as a young combat veteran remain tender even after fifty years. I survived one solid year of war, then my countrymen shot me in the back. Fire of such caliber tore a jagged hole through me. We were castaways, marked as crazed pariahs, lepers afflicted with a nitro-glycerine menace— “post-Vietnam syndrome” was the smear. We were the refuse of a lost war, unexploded ordnance, duds to be sidestepped. Today those who branded us will not look us in the eye. Vietnam veterans returned confused from the war in which we had invested our young lives and sought no return. Many reacted to the homegrown incoming fire like an in-country firefight—we went to ground. It jinxed a homecoming of the spirit. Peace is more than just the absence of war. I rode the brakes on my sensibilities and resolved not to squander a life that had been spared, eager to harness the opportunities of America the beautiful. My country right or wrong; I love her so—for keeps. Contrary to the shrill scorn for Vietnam veterans, most had met severe tests there and scored well. Many years after the war, a placid pride crept into me. It balanced the comedown, embarrassment and guilt plaguing me from public disdain and because, unlike so many I had known, I survived with all working body parts and a full tank of blood. It joined other unspoken attitudes shaped by
Marengo Police Beat On Wednesday May 18th, 2016 the Marengo Police Department charged Nathaniel A. Loudenbeck 24 of 606 E. On Wednesday May 18th, 2016 the Marengo Police Department charged Jordan L. Sandersfeld 21 of 110 E. Prairie St. Apt. 9 for the alleged offense, Unlawful Possession of Cannabis. Mr. Sandersfeld was released with a notice to appear in court. On Friday May 20th, 2016 the Marengo Police Department arrested Michael V. Ryan 33 of 213 N. Hale St. Apt. B in Marengo for the alleged offenses, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of Hypodermics. Mr. Ryan was transported to the McHenry County Jail.
wartime. I harbor no regrets that I fought there or for what I did there, but bear some for what I did not do. As a 19-year-old in Vietnam, I took for granted the vivid camaraderie borne of war’s wild circumstances. I was blind to many sentiments under death’s cold stare. Later I learned that these attachments were priceless beyond compare. In Vietnam we haggard grunts supposed we were the lowest of wretches on the planet, but we never stood so tall. A few of my platoon survivors of the war and its shameful aftermath gather in our old age, bonded in the past and in a powerful fellowship borne of the inexpressible experience of war. We know each other’s dark place. None can articulate the sentiment, but all feel its muscle. It is an elegy to and a celebration of for-
lorn sacrifices. In 1967, as I left the “bush” for the last time, whopping chopper blades drowned my elated shout of “Airborne!” They lifted me upward, homeward, away from my rifle platoon forever. As the Huey slowly rose, my right arm went up in salute to those left behind, to those gone before, to all that we had been and done, to our teenage savvy of a world of suffering, injustice, evil and love—and to all that we had risked and endured that none can say. I was buoyant; the moment seemed as an ascent to heaven. But it was to be a low height. I would be anchored there always. The shooting stopped, but there was no cease-fire. I hold that salute. My body left that doomful place, but my youth and its unbroken heart never boarded that helicopter.
