obert Di Silvestro was born in Italy. He was raised in France. At the age of 11, he watched an artist painting and decided that was what he wanted to do with his life. “I want to be an artist,” he would say. “You’re going to starve,” he said was the inevitable response. At one point, an uncle added this advice, “Commercial sign artist.” Di Silvestro took that advice. He learned to hand letter signs while at the Paris School of Beaux Arts in France. He moved with his family to Chicago in 1960 where he discovered calligraphy. “I thought it was the most beautiful work I had ever seen.” Discovered by accident, Di Silvestro had happened upon a calligraphy studio while searching for work. He stayed up for hours every night practicing. “I would make strokes until 2 or 3 am. Until I couldn’t move my arm anymore. The only way to be employed by the studio was to do calligraphy. I had to earn my position.” He practiced seven - eight hours a day for weeks before he applied for
a job. “Are you still up? What are you doing?” his mother would say. “You’re crazy!” “There were ten artists. I was the youngest.” He made quite a lot of money - $3.28 an hour. He created diplomas, certificates, testimonials, and other distinguished documents for 20 years. He learned to embellish letters in gold and with elaborate borders. This is called ‘illuminating’ and is a product of the Middle Ages. ‘Engrossing’ has developed out of that practice but is more delicate in nature, using finer strokes in place of the heavy border styles of illuminating. A single document – hand-lettered and embellished in this way could take seven hours and cost hundreds of dollars. Within two years, Di Silvestro was able to purchase property. Within four years, he owned a new car and took a six-month vacation to Europe. He had worked hard and earned the ‘American Dream’. Success. When he returned to America, the job was waiting for him. Marengo resident graduates, joins local PT practice By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MARENGO — Stephanie Egan, 26, recently graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northern Illinois University last month. Stephanie, a lifelong Marengo resident, has spent the last 20 years gaining the knowledge and experience necessary to become a Doctor. She and her dog Maddie still reside in Marengo. When Dr. Egan is not learning or working, she enjoys cooking, swimming, and water tubing. Egan first graduated as an honor student from Marengo Community High School in 2007 where she was also a member of the school colorguard. After high school, her education continued at McHenry County College where she received her Associates of Science degree in 2009. She then transferred to Northern Illinois University where she completed her undergraduate studies in health and human sciences before pursuing her doctorate program for physical therapy. Stephanie excelled throughout school and in her course of study, also performed her clinical school requirements at local establishments such as Fair Oaks Health Care Center and Centegra Milestones Therapy Center. Stephanie’s interest in the physical therapy field began when she worked for a company called Sports Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists. She worked with the company between 2008 and 2009, and has attributed her time there as sparking her desire to become a Physical Therapist. “I was inspired by one of the therapists to continue my education. I also enjoyed watching patients progress throughout their plan of care,” Egan explained. While working toward her degree, Stephanie became a licensed Massage Therapist and began working at Cortiva Institute of Massage Therapy as a part-time

instructor in 2013. She is currently completing her last term of classes at the Institute. She has held her massage therapy license for over 7 years to date. With her graduation and new title, Egan has accepted her first professional full-time position at Crystal Lake Physical Therapy Inc. Located at 530 Rockland Rd. Suite 500, the brand new practice is owned and operated by Emily Craigen, DPT. Egan will be the second physical therapist at the practice. The company opened in April and has already been able to expand and add to their practice with Stephanie joining the staff. CLPTI provides outpatient treatment for a variety of conditions including athletic injuries, men and women’s health, plus much more. Interestingly, the two DPT professionals were first introduced at Sports Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists where Egan’s interest in the field began. “I genuinely enjoy working with patients who suffer or have suffered from orthopedic and/or athletic injuries,” stated Egan. For more information on the practice and their services, please visit CLPTI online at http:// www.crystallakept.com/. Congratulations to both CLPTI and Egan on their continuing achievements!

• BEAUTY
Continued from page 1 to become a partner but that opportunity was denied to him. So he left his well-paying position and started his own business. Returning to the advice of his uncle, Di Silvestro turned back to commercial sign painting. He is the owner of RD Signs 1t 1143 Seminary Avenue in Woodstock. (Next to Beef Villa.) He has been a commercial sign painter since the 1980s. “I go past businesses without a sign and I wonder, what do they do? They will spend thousands on making a business beautiful, but spend little on a sign. People don’t know what the business does. A sign works day and night and lasts 5, 10, 15 years. Why not do it right the first time?” Di Silvestro’s passion remains in calligraphy. His office includes a studio where he teaches
calligraphy to prevent this lost art from dying out. “With the experience I have, students think they will pick it up and learn in a month or two. Unfortunately, it takes a LOT of practice to get it right. It takes years to master.” His new dream is not only to teach calligraphy but also to locate artists to rent studios in his building. He would love to see these artists find success in a creative environment with others of like mind. Robert Di Silvestro and his calligraphy studio can be found at RD Signs “A Sign of Distinction” located at 1143 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock, IL, 60180. He can be reached at (Signs) 815.479.1924 and at (Calligraphy) 815.575.3940. Or you can email him at rdisilvestro@msn.com.

Each piece of work that Di Silvestro does is lovingly hand crafted. His calligraphy work takes dedication and patience to master.
