The defendant was convicted after a jury trial on April 30, 2015. McHenry County Sheriff seeks public safety communications accreditation The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies offers accreditation programming in the areas of Law Enforcement, Public Safety Training Academy, Public Safety Communications, and Campus Security. Although these are distinct programs that effectively serve stand-alone organizations, there are circumstances where a public safety agency may be able to leverage the work in one program to address the requirements of another. This is limited to organizations like the McHenry County Sheriff’s office that have acquired advanced accreditation in Law Enforcement and are now seeking accreditation in Public Safety Communications so long as they meet the enrollment criteria. The Sheriff’s Office was awarded Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation July 26, 2014.

The standards upon which the Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program is based reflect the current thinking and experience of public safety communications executives and accreditation experts. APCO International (Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International, Inc.), the leading communications membership association, was a partner in the development of CALEA’s Standards for Public Safety Communications Agencies and it’s Accreditation Program. This relationship continues today as APCO recognizes the achievement of CALEA Accredited Public Safety Communications agencies and supports accreditation. CALEA Accreditation requires the Communications Section to develop a comprehensive, well thought out uniform set of written directives. This is

one of the most successful methods for reaching administrative and operational goals, while also providing direction to personnel. CALEA Accreditation standards provide the necessary reports and analyses a CEO needs to make fact-based, informed management decisions. Accreditation also requires a preparedness program be put in place so the Center is ready to address natural or man-made unusual occurrences. Being CALEA Accredited can limit a communications center’s liability and risk exposure because it demonstrates that international recognized standards for public safety communications have been met, as verified by a team of independent outside CALEA-trained assessors. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to be the first agency in McHenry County to obtain this

Recent busts add to drug and property seizures A recent flurry of narcotics-related arrests, search warrants and assets seizures has kept the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police Narcotics Task Force busy along, with several cooperating local jurisdictions, and pushed dramatically upward the totals of assets seized and narcotics confiscated this year, Sheriff Bill Prim said Thursday. A total of $345,000 in U.S. currency combined with the estimated dollar value of real estate, vehicles and other property is now more than $865,000 for 2015. In addition to a joint investigation with the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force earlier this week that resulted in the arrest and charging of a McHenry County man, and the confiscation of about $240,000 in U.S. currency, the MCSO Narcotics Task Force served two search warrants Tuesday and Wednesday in Crystal Lake and unincorporated Wonder Lake, respectively. A routine traffic stop Tuesday night in Crystal Lake led hours later to the search warrant there. The combined amounts of narcotics and

cash found in the car and the home was 135 grams of cocaine; 184 grams of cannabis; 32 amphetamines pills; 52 hydrocodone pills; 5 of alprazolam; 3 of clonazepam; 1 of vyvanse and over $3,200 in U.S. currency. Following up on information obtained during that operation led to the Wonder Lake search warrant, which netted an additional 45 grams of cannabis. The investigation continues into the Crystal Lake motorist, who is the owner of the home there, and another individual who owns the Wonder Lake residence. “We have also seen significant numbers of weapons taken off the streets,” Prim said. “Over the past six months we have seized 7 assault rifles, 10 handguns and 2 shotguns.” Two private residences and a total of 41 vehicles add to the mounting tallies since January 1. “We are confident that none of this property or equipment will ever return to the wrong hands to be used for ongoing, largescale criminal enterprises,” Prim said, “which is the best result of all.”

Fraternite of Notre Dame hearing postponed By: Samantha Fetzner Reporter

The McHenry County Zoning Board did not hear the Fraternite of Norte Dame’s petition to request permission for what ultimately equates to expansion. With one of the seven members of the zoning committee out during their most recent meeting, the Fraternite’s attorney requested the delay due to the numerical challenge they faced. In order for their request to pass, five members of the zoning board need to approve it. There were only six members present on July 15. The request came after several tumultuous months of township meetings where the group was denied by their local governing body. Following an appeals meeting three months ago in April, the township was rallied around with a petition with over 800 signatures from community members standing their ground and voting ‘no’ to the Fraternite’s requests. What the group is currently attempting to do is add new structures to their location at 10002 Harmony Hills Road in rural Marengo. The proposal would allow them to incorporate a winery/brewery, commercial kitchen, and private school with on-site boarding to their land. Said structures would be solely usable by Fraternite members and not open to the public. Ten years ago the Fraternite was granted a condition use permit which scoped for ten additional buildings. The scope of that permit has not been fully completed to date. Neighbors

Agency personnel and members of the Community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 beginning from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. CALEA Accreditation strengthens an agency’s accountability, both within the agency and the community, through a continuum of standards that clearly define authority, performance, and responsibilities. CALEA Accreditation facilitates an agency’s pursuit of professional excellence.

in the rural community have raised concerns about their Fraternite’s lack of consideration in construction hours and their tax free status. The overwhelming majority of community response has been in opposition of this project from the start, including the original conditional use permits which were granted in 2005. Several hearings have already been held in regards to this matter as it moves through the appeals process, but the vote will take place at 1 p.m. on Wed., July 22. Tom Zanck, attorney for the Fraternite, has definitely showcased his expectation that the group’s request will be approved. Ultimately, final say will fall in the hands of the County. The zoning board voted to remove over half of the 16 conditions in the permit and stated an additional four needed to be amended in order to be approved. They will hold their final vote and pass their findings on at that point. Following the Zoning Board’s r e c o m mendation, the County Board will ultimately approve or deny the Fraternite’s requests based on the information Purchase provided.

VIEWPOINT You don’t have to be a

farmer to enjoy growing things I

n my heart, I am a farmer – at least during the summer months when I’m outside tending my garden. I love growing things. I enjoy the feel of moist black dirt between my fingers. I get a sense of satisfaction when my seedlings sprout. I even take pleasure in the achy, sweaty feeling I get after a day spent outside moving dirt and pulling weeds – doing good work. Real, honest work in the garden with Mother Nature as my boss and my husband as my supervisor. (Not really, but I let him think so.) But even though I truly dig gardening, I am not a farmer. Nor is my husband a farmer. I’m a writer who is sometimes a farmer at heart. Transoccupational would be the trendy term for it. My husband and I are a pretty good team in the garden. I pull weeds. He hauls dirt. We express satisfaction with the

height of the tomato plants and anticipate the first pea pods and squash blossoms. We marvel at the ever-vigorous growth of the indestructible, immortal mint. Over the years we’ve learned growing things involves a never-ending learning curve. (There’s a parenting analogy in there for anyone who wants to harvest it.) We’ve also learned that gardening success comes not only from what you plant, but where. Plants are social beings and garden relationships are key to a robust crop. You don’t have to be a farmer to reap the benefits of companion planting. Strong smell-

S-E-X. Both birds and bees can pollinate, but bees are better known for this skill. Garden plants produce flowers. Some plants develop male and female flowers, others are hermaphrodites; their flowers are twofers – male and female at the same time. For plants to produce fruit (most things in the garden, even tomatoes and cucumbers, are technically fruit) pollen from the male part of the plant must make its way to the female ovaries. Here’s where the birds and bees come in. I don’t want to get all R-rated, but as bees collect nectar from flowers, pollen clings to their tiny bee feet. As they flit about the garden, the pollen is distributed to a female flower (or portion thereof) and the deed is done – pollination! Flower sex at its finest and it’s all made possible by busy bees (or in some cases butterflies, bats or even the wind). They

flutter from bloom to bloom in search of nectar seemingly oblivious to the flora life cycle they are helping to perpetuate. Summer’s in full bloom in my yard and my husband and I are busy bees ourselves with weeding and watering and – hopefully soon – harvesting. We aren’t farmers, but you don’t have to be an official farmer to enjoy growing things. We started with kids and moved up to tomatoes and beans – if you consider that an advancement, which it probably isn’t. I guess that’s okay with us. It is summer. We are outside. And we are having fun pretending to be farmers together. Feels pretty good to me. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. ing herbs like basil, dill and green onions protect tomatoes from insects and slugs. Beets like bush beans (but not pole beans). Corn likes cucumber. Nasturtium is an edible flower that deters bugs and aphids. Ditto that for marigolds. You can also eat pansies. They look pretty in a salad. Some plants experience irreconcilable differences and do not make good neighbors. Cabbage and cauliflower prefer to stay away from one another. Beans don’t like garlic or onions. Lettuce and celery may both be green and crispy, but they don’t like growing in proximity to each other. Garden plants possess more (or less) social skills than I ever would have imagined. Another interesting aspect of gardening is sex – most specifically (and literally) the birds and the bees. What I’m referring to is pollination, which in plant circles means

ur semi-spontaneous Vermont vacation in June provoked a true spontaneous road trip to the Smoky Mountains this past 4th of July weekend. My Prince Charming and I packed up some snacks, hiking shoes, the old-school paper atlas, and headed south. We have a hankering for mountains. We wanted to see if it matters what mountains. PC had been to the Smokies in years past, and I had too but didn’t recall much. The area is as pretty as they say, and Gatlinburg is as touristy as they say too. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is absolutely worth the trip. Millions of people go there every year for a reason. We sang Ronnie Milsap as Smoky Mourntain rain accompanied us on and off as we played. The heavy mist, the occasional downpour, and the gray clouds didn’t obscure the beauty of the namesake park. The North Carolina side is just as magnificent. We did a

whirlwind tour of small towns that we would never have visited from simply looking at the map but were told by various peeps to see (Franklin, Highlands, Cashiers, and Murphy, in case you were wondering.) With limited time this trip, we ventured on back to Chattanooga. Surprisingly, it was my favorite. What I’ve learned so far this summer: I love mountains. I want them available, I like to see them, I do not need to live on one. Mountain driving, not my strong suit. Guard rails, when they appear, are comforting. Yellow lines dividing a two-lane road are not a given, and I like roads that are wide enough to sport such a yellow line. I’ve learned the motion sick-

ness bracelets with the acupressure points are my best friend on the narrow, twistyturney steep dropoff roads. I’ve learned that no matter how tightly I hang on to the handle inside the car, it will do nothing to save me if we go careening off the side of the mountain so I learned to relax my grip. And take a deep breath. If it’s my time, it’s my time; and falling off a mountain with my Prince would be a good way to go. I’ve learned that I am not a dare-devil. Well, I already knew that. My Prince climbs up rocks like an 8-year-old boy. I go a little bit, but not as high or as far or to the edge. I’ve learned that one of my favorite things is taking pictures of him taking pictures. He has a good eye and gets great shots. I’ve learned that an afternoon ice cream cone is always a delight. I’ve learned it’s good to pack bug spray and rain ponchos. I’ve learned I

Gas prices drop in the last week after peaking out STATELINE — Average retail gasoline prices in Rockford have fallen 4.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.68/g as of last Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 139 gas outlets in Rockford. This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.76/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com . Including the change in gas prices in the stateline area during the past week, prices last weekend were 77.8 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 13.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 3.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 81.2 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “After areas of the West Coast saw hikes at the pump, things are finally beginning to cool with gas prices declining in all but 15 states versus last week,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. “While California, Arizona and Nevada all saw price increases versus a week ago, the tide turned late in the week when prices peaked and now are moving lower again. Refinery issues were primarily the catalyst for the increase, and unfortunately refinery issues now have begun to plague the nation’s mid-section, leading to increases in the Midcontinent region, but rest assured lower prices will be coming back in the weeks ahead. With oil nearing $50/ bbl, there’s a very good possibility that by midfall, gasoline prices could fall under $2/gallon in a growing number of states,” DeHaan added.

shown on his display stand or he will create a surprise. Most of the kids request a surprise. Sass intently inspects the person who has requested a surprise. Then he begins to twist and bend the balloons into surprisingly intricate objects. Scepters and swords, ray guns and alien or ninja hats appear. Penguins, jet packs and a unicorn steed that fits a child’s waist never fail to delight the recipient. Imagination flows and smiles appear. The 2nd Friday Woodstock Square Art Walk holds art of every type. It ranges from music and performance art to collector items, statues, stoneware and paintings. It even includes something as ephemeral as balloons. The remaining 2nd Friday art events this summer will occur on August 14 and September 11. I am told that August 14 will feature a sword swallower. For further information on these events, please visit Facebook at Woodstock Square – Public Places.

Vendors outside include a kettle corn booth, brats, burgers and hot dogs and a veteran who makes all natural personal care products. ‘Honestly Inspired’ has been around since 2007. Jenny Griffith, owner, says, “I started doing it [making soaps and products] for my family and it just exploded.” The things she created for herself and her children found a customer demand that just kept growing. “I don’t make things that don’t work,” she explains when I inquire about her mosquito repellent. If I don’t have to put toxic chemicals on my skin to keep mosquitoes away, I am a happy camper. It can be found online at www.HonestlyInspired. net or on Facebook at Honestly Inspired Across Washington Street next to the museum is the Schuette Building. The museum is running a White Elephant Sale here today. You can also find vintage clothing and used books inside while plant sales are taking place on the corner outside.
