he Helping Paws Animal Shelter in Woodstock volunteers found a wonderful place in the shade to escape the sun and enjoy the breeze on Saturday, August 1. Dogs and volunteers came out to very visible locations at Coldwell Banker in Crystal Lake and Nature’s Feed in Spring Grove for National Pet Adoption Weekend. I chat with Helping Paws Director Sharon Fabian and ask her about the fresh outbreak of dog flu in McHenry County. “We’re just being very cautious, taking better precautions and doing all ‘meet and greets’ outside.” The Helping Paws animals should be fine “as long as people don’t bring their dogs nose-to-nose” with the healthy dogs. “We’re not having ‘Paws in the Park’ due to dog flu but we will do it in June next year,” Fabian tells me. ‘Paws in the Park’ is a huge adoption event and fundraiser for the Helping Paws Animal Shelter. Adoption events are important to them because, “85% of our dogs come from kill shelters, 15% are relinquishments.” Fabian continues, “We do donate food out to the public. We don’t want people to have to relinquish their dog if we can help it.” The next event on the schedule for 2015 is the 2nd Annual Paw Crawl around the Woodstock Square. $40 will buy you five drink tickets for Saturday, August 22, and an official event T-shirt. Last year, the Paw Crawl raised

over $10,000 for Helping Paws. There were 267 participants in the event. Right now, Helping Paws is selling raffle tickets for $5 per ticket. The winner will receive a ‘Dining Through Woodstock’ prize worth over $650. Meanwhile, kids are playing with the three dogs who brought their Helping Paws volunteers to Crystal Lake today. Shaggy is a two year old terrier mix who is enjoying all the attention he is getting. April is a black four month old Aussie/Lab mix who will eventually reach 40-45 pounds. She is very loyal and will instinctively round up the kids for you and herd them home. Jack is a seven month old beagle who doesn’t want to sit still. He is very excited at all the new friends he is making today. As always, the animals adopted out from the Helping Paws Animal Shelter are healthy, well fed and have received medical treatment, including being spayed/neutered. Helping Paws is a no-kill, non-profit organization that is now in its 40th year of operation in McHenry County. To help them raise funds, to donate food or supplies or to adopt an animal, visit them online at www.helpingpaws.net or call 815.338.4400. You can also purchase’ Dining Through Woodstock’ Raffle tickets or reserve a space at the 2nd Annual paw Crawl online, by calling or by visiting them at 2500 Harding Road, Woodstock, IL, 60098.

Continued from page 1 show that the kids thoroughly enjoyed. Volunteers will be attending the tents that will provide shade along with Thomas & Friends storytelling and videos, a play table, coloring sheets and temporary tattoos. It takes a lot of volunteers augmenting the museum staff to run an event that can handle 14,000 visitors a day and keep everything running smoothly. Volunteers are provided by local area high schools, P.A.D.S. of Elgin, Habitat for Humanity and other area organizations. Some of these volunteers have been returning to the event for years to help and to enjoy the visitors. Crossing guards and sales clerks are also volunteers. When you see someone cleaning up fallen food or doing other maintenance, be sure to thank them for volunteering their time and efforts to help at ‘A Day Out With Thomas’. As a special treat, this year Thomas is bringing his friend Percy. For an additional $10, you can ride Percy’s train also. Rides last about 20 minutes.

If you are not actively riding the trains and streetcars, you can view all the train displays. More active things for the children to do include a playground, a large pile of sand and inflatable bounce houses and slides. There is plenty to do to keep the young ones busy and happy from the time the gates open at 9:00 am until they close at 6:00 pm Everyone from the age of 2 and older must have a ticket. Tickets can be purchased online. If you want a specific time for your rides with Thomas and Percy, it would be wise to buy your tickets online. Many train ride time slots will already be filled up by the time the gates open. You can purchase tickets for ‘A Day Out With Thomas’, or get more information about the Illinois Railway Museum at www.IRM.org. The Illinois Railway Museum is located at 7000 Olson Road, Union, IL, 60180 The museum can also be reached by calling 815.923.4391

Radiothon 2 held in Diecke Park By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

HUNTLEY — Two Dudes & the Duchess are sitting on the front porch of WHRU-LP 101.5 FM radio station when I arrive on Saturday morning, August 1. Located in Diecke Park at 11419 S. Route 47 in Huntley, the station has been broadcasting live since 6 p.m. Friday. They will continue broadcasting live until 6 p.m. tonight. This Radiothon is raising funds to sponsor shows and take care of station expenses. WHRU-LP 101.5 FM is a non-profit organization and cannot sell commercial time to businesses. Selling commercial time would make the station a ‘for profit’ group. So, everyone is pitching in today. I spot the Dining Duo sitting at a table to the side of the front porch taking donations. Two Dudes & the Duchess are currently doing live interviews. The Woodstock Opera House has a representative discussing their current shows and upcoming events, www.woodstockoperahouse.com Next up is George Richardson of Richardson Adventure Farm, 909 English Prairie Road, Spring Grove, IL 60081. He discusses the new amphitheater, pig races, 750 foot long zip line, carousel, jumping pillows and 100 foot slide. “We want to have a number of different activities for the young, the middle-aged and the elderly. We want to provide an alternative to computer games,” he says. The Richardson Adventure Farm corn maze has a hockey theme this year. It features the Stanley Cup and the Chicago Blackhawks this year. When the interviewers ask how a corn maze can look so precise when viewed from the air, Richardson explains the process. The corn maze is planned months in advance.

The Dining Duo sit to the side of the porch, taking donations for the radio station.

Once a theme is determined, the maze designer goes to work to figure out how to make the maze in the requested design. The corn is planted, then, about

one month later, the designer comes with a program to cut a computer-precision pathway through the field. Following the designer’s portion of the work, Richardson does more ‘clean up’ along the pathways to keep them neat until the corn is tall enough and the maze opens to visitors. Richardson’s will also be hosting several events this year such as a Savage Race, an obstacle race and a timed race through the corn field. More information about Richardson’s Adventure Farm can be found online at www.richardsonadventurefarm.com After Richardson’s interview, Jaki Berggren, executive director of Visit McHenry County comes up to chat with Two Dudes & the Duchess. She tells listeners that tourism in McHenry County is up 20% this year from last year. [Good work, tourist attractions!] She also informs us that the new Visitor Center in Huntley, which had its Grand Opening on June 18, will be getting signage proclaiming it to be a visitor’s center during the first week of August. They can be found online at www.visitmchenrycounty.com The interviews will continue until 6 p.m. tonight, Saturday, August 1. Donations will be accepted whenever you wish to make one. Huntley Community Radio WHRU-LP 101.5 FM can be located online at www.huntleyradio.com. Their program schedule can be found there and you can listen online at any time. Two Dudes & the Duchess can be found on air at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Dining Duo airs on Mondays at 11:30 a.m., Thursdays at 12:30 p.m., and Fridays at 4:30 p.m.

Sheriffs Office investigates fatal motorcycle crash CRYSTAL LAKE — On August 2, 2015, at approximately 11:10 a.m., McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 3-vehicle crash on Northwest Highway (US RT 14) east of Sands Road, in unincorporated Crystal Lake. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2009 Yamaha Raider S motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Northwest Highway at approximately 11:10 a.m. Sunday when it entered the westbound lane of travel striking two vehicles; a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a 2014 Ford Fusion. The impact caused the Yamaha to exit the north side of the roadway where it came to a rest in the tall grass. The driver of the Yamaha, Vincent E. Franchi, 50, was not wearing a helmet. Crystal Lake Rescue transported Vin-

cent to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Chevrolet, Daniel R. Williams, 45, and his passenger, Lori L. Straub, 45, were not injured and were wearing their seatbelts. The driver of the Ford, Thomas A. Wiley, 44, had minor injuries to his left wrist and was treated and released on scene by Crystal Lake Rescue. Thomas was wearing his seatbelt and there was airbag deployment in the vehicle. An investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, Crystal Lake Police Department and the McHenry County Conservation District also assisted at the scene.

Drug induced homicide arrest made in death of woman CRYSTAL LAKE — A Crystal Lake man has been charged with drug induced homicide in the death of a 29-year-old McHenry woman after a nearly

Shortly after deputies arrived, the scene was turned over to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force (which includes Lake in the Hills Police Department). Detective’s recovered evidence indicating the victim, a 29-year-old woman, may have ingested heroin prior to her death. During the investigation, detectives determined that Herman B. Franks introduces property tax, school funding reform measure

Used cellphone drive launched to aid soldiers serving overseas MCHENRY COUNTY — In recognition of the sacrifices made by active-duty personnel, state Rep. Jack D. Franks, D-Marengo, is partnering with the nonprofit Cell Phones for Soldiers to make his district office in Woodstock a permanent drop-off location for used mobile devices that will help servicemen and women stay in touch with loved ones at home. “The courage and selflessness of our men and women in uniform is simply remarkable,” Franks said. “It’s important that we do all we can to help them stay in touch with family and friends back at home.” Cell Phones for Soldiers donates gently used cell phones to Mindful eCycling to be recycled. The proceeds raised are then used to purchase prepaid international calling cards for American soldiers serving overseas. According to their website, Cell Phones for Soldiers distributes more than 3,000 calling

cards each week to bases around the world. For every donated phone valued at $5, Cell Phones for Soldiers is able to provide two and a half hours of free talk time to deployed troops. The organization was founded in 2004 and has since provided more than 210 million minutes of free talk time through its calling card program, Minutes That Matter. “Cell Phones for Soldiers gives residents a convenient way to thank the brave men and women serving on our behalf across the world,” Franks added. “If you have an old mobile device sitting in a drawer, it can provide servicemen and women with precious time in the company of their loved ones.” Franks’ district office is located at 1193 S. Eastwood Drive in Woodstock. For more information, please call 815-334-0063 or email jack@jackfranks.org.

Dodging the storm isn’t easy sometimes W e are at the lake and they are swimming – despite the gray clouds and looming weather, which threatens to dampen everything except their spirits. They seem oblivious to the oncoming onslaught, even though the air hangs heavy and dark, even though it is late afternoon – prime time for summer storms. I walk down to the beach. They are as unaware of me as they are of the overcast sky. I sit on the dock with my toes in the water watching them jump and dive. Splashing. Laughing. Dunking each other the way brothers do. The youngest looks up and sees me. “You don’t have to watch us,” he says. He is right. They are old enough to swim together without me being right there. The days of required constant supervision are gone. “I know,” I say. “I just want

Jill Pertler

SLICES OF LIFE

to.” My son, familiar with my motherly weirdness, accepts my presence and goes on dunking. Sometimes it’s like that. Motherhood. Parenthood. We sit and watch them because we want to and we can. Because they are in the water and we are on the dock. They are on the court and we are on the bleachers. They are outside and we are at the window. They are on the field and we are in the stands. They are on stage and we are in the audience. They are sleeping in bed and we linger at their doorway

Sometimes in quiet moments of contemplation, when the world seems to stop and we are alone with our thoughts, we ponder who they are and the vulnerability they create in us. We reflect on a love so great we couldn’t have imagined it had we not experienced it firsthand. Such deep thoughts can make us teary and emotional, and when this happens we try not to let them see us in such a state because they wouldn’t understand. Think us silly, even. At least that’s what we believe. Thunder rustles in the distance. The storm is growing closer. “Thunder,” I say. “Time to get out.” After years growing up at the lake they understand that lightning and swimming do not mix. Without any of the usual arguments, they head toward me and I ready the towels to loop over their shoulders and shelter them from the wind.

The oncoming weather is making me feel protective. It’s hard to explain the surges of motherhood that can roll in out of nowhere, much like a summer storm. They reach the safety of the dock before the first raindrops hit and we sprint toward shelter and I wish it could always be like this. Running together to the safety of the cabin. Dodging the storm. Sitting on the dock keeping them safe from thunder and lightening. And everything. But that can’t happen. Won’t happen. Because that is not how life works – not how it’s supposed to be. As hard as that is. We can’t always keep them safe. It isn’t always as easy as hearing thunder and knowing it’s time to get out of the water. Sometimes it’s impossible to dodge the storm. Sometimes we won’t get there in time to help them. Not because we wouldn’t

if we could; but because it isn’t possible. Because we aren’t supposed to be there all of the time every time. As they go through life, they will stumble and they will fall (much like we did). Most times they will get up. It’s possible there may come a time when they don’t. That is the truth. Thankfully, most days we don’t contemplate this. You can’t as a parent or you’d die from the worry and anxiety and the fear of all the things that could or might go wrong. So you walk down to the beach. And you watch them from the dock and track the storm from the safety of the cabin. And you try to drink it all in and appreciate it for what it is. Moment by moment. And you realize the best and most you can do is give thanks for days like these. For simple times when being together is enough. When it is more than enough.

Book lover finally partakes of audio book fiction and is hooked

I

am currently listening to an audio book, a new thing for me. I know “books on tape” have been around for a long time, it has just never been my thing. I like to read the “real” book with my eyeballs and when I’m driving I prefer to listen to music or nonfiction selfhelp kind of stuff. We had a recent road trip so we thought a little audio fiction could be good fun. A book in the background did not work. We discovered that when my Prince and I are driving, we like to talk or take in the scenic beauty. If I am going to turn on a story, I want to listen intently. When I am with my sweetie, I prefer to converse with him.

SPRINGFIELD — The Senate is scheduled to reconvene Aug. 4 in the Capital City as Illinois enters its second month of the new fiscal year without a balanced state budget. One of our top priorities will be to reject a cost-of-living pay increase for Illinois legislators. House Bill 576 was approved by the House of Representatives July 28, and is now pending in the Senate. Tourism is on the rise in Illinois, as the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Tourism reported 3.5 percent increase in 2014. With the annual Illinois State Fair just weeks away, this increase in visitors could mean big crowds in Springfield. In other news, a recently released Department of Corrections’ quarterly report on the state’s prison population revealed that though still overcrowded, the prison population is the lowest it has been in almost five years.

Only when we decided to drive on home through the night did I turn on the book. My Prince took a turn napping while I drove. It was dark with nothing to look at and no one to talk to, so I tried the book. I loved it. It kept me awake for hours on the highway. However, this Nicholas Sparks story is eleven CDs. We didn’t finish it on our journey home. There are two readers and they both speak very slowly. Maybe that’s how all audio books go or maybe it’s just this one, but I am a fast reader so I thought I would just go get the book and read it myself to finish it up quickly. Instead I’ve been listening to the CDs in bits and bites as I run errands around town

Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST

or drive into Chicago for a meeting. The slower pace is a good change for me. The narrators inflect differently than I would in some places so that interests me. The story interests me too. This morning I started the last CD when running errands in my car and since it is the final wrap up, I brought it in the house to finish it up. Right now I am trying to type while I listen. Not working.

My brain cannot be engaged in writing and fully listening at the same time. I’ll be back in a few minutes. It’s just about done.... Ah, satisfying ending. Of course somebody died, as happens in many Sparks novels, but it was what I would deem a satisfying read. Or listen. Not all books provide me a satisfying ending, and yet I find that satisfying too. I don’t like predictable. Some fiction really gets me thinking. And that is why we read. To take us out of our known for a little bit and provide with us with a glimpse of something we may not have pondered. To see the world or a relationship or even a town with a different perspective is good.

That is why I love travel so much, it opens my head and heart to new ways of being. Reading does that too. So I am a new fan of audio books. All I currently have are nonfiction that purposely makes me think beyond my horizons. Fiction can do that too. I know I’m a little late to the party, and the audio book industry has been doing just fine without me as a fan, but now that I am one, look out. The editor in me still finds places I would tweak but for the most part, I enjoy. I am learning and soaking in the story and the story telling. And now I know I can do so from my car. I love my everexpanding world. Now, off to the library!

SENATE WEEK IN REVIEW: JULY 27-31 hike for lawmakers that took effect on July 1 was rejected in the House on July 28 by a vote of 101-1. House Bill 576 could be considered by the Senate when they reconvene on Aug. 4. Because of the way that state law is written, legislators are automatically given a cost-ofliving adjustment—essentially a pay increase—each fiscal year. Though lawmakers rejected these automatic pay increases in past years, the Democrat-controlled Legislature failed to stop the automatic pay increase from taking effect in Fiscal Year 2016. In response, Senate Republican lawmakers joined together to sponsor Senate Bill 1083, which removed the cost-of-living adjustment; however, that bill was not called by Democrat leadership for a vote in the Senate. Republican legislators joined Gov. Rauner in criticizing the pay hikes, and called for Democrats to take action on Republican legislation to eliminate the cost-of-living adjustment for the Pay hike rejected next fiscal year. After extensive criticism from The original salary increase Republican lawmakers and Gov. called for an additional $1,600 Bruce Rauner, a two-percent pay for cost-of-living expenses to be

added to legislators’ base salaries. If allowed to go into effect, the automatic pay increase would cost the state approximately $283,200 per year. Illinois sparks tourists’ interest Illinois continues to welcome growing tourist numbers and their economic benefits for the fourth straight year in a row. According to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Tourism, Illinois witnessed a 3.5 percent increase in visitors from 2013, hosting approximately 109.4 million tourists in 2014. These tourism figures and travel expenditures have been linked to the generation of more than $36.3 billion for the state’s economy, a total of $2.7 billion in state and local tax revenues and the creation of 5,000 new jobs throughout Illinois. State Fair set for Aug. 13-23 Started originally as a showcase of Illinois’ agricultural industry, the annual Illinois State Fair has evolved throughout the years to include a variety of exhibits and activities.

Scheduled to run Aug. 13-23, the State Fair promises something for everyone to enjoy. From the iconic butter cow to favorites like the high-dive show and the agriculture tent, the State Fair has attractions for every taste and interest. The State Fair is also host to a number of entertainment options such as tractor pulls, horse racing, the Twilight Parade and well-known performers in the Grandstand, including Sammy Hagar, Rascal Flatts, The Fray and Austin Mahone. From 7 a.m. to midnight, visitors are welcome to come out and enjoy some good food, fun rides and great entertainment.

bers continue to be a concern as state resources are stretched. According to the Department of Corrections’ quarterly report, Illinois’ prisons had 47,483 inmates in custody as of May. Although a decline in population figures is promising, state prison facilities are only designed to accommodate 32,000 prisoners. To combat overcrowded prisons, Gov. Rauner issued an Executive Order in February creating a commission charged with identifying ways to reform the criminal justice system of Illinois and reduce the prison population. The commission’s goal is to have the prison population drop by 25 percent over the next 10 years. To read the full quarterly report, visit the Department of Corrections’ Web site.

To read more about the daily schedule and pricing discounts for groups such as veterans, senior citizens and Family Day go to the Illinois State Fair webBills signed into law site. Gov. Rauner took action on a number of bills during the week. Health Department reports first West Nile Virus positive mosquito batch in Boone County BELVIDERE — The Boone County Health Department announces that a batch of mosquitoes collected on July 28 in the 61065 zip code, has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). To date, Boone County has no positive birds or human cases of WNV. WNV is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people with the virus have no clinical symptoms of illness, but some may become ill three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Only about two people in 10 who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness. Illness from WNV is usually mild and includes fever, headache, and body aches, but serious illness, such as encephalitis and meningitis, and death are possible. Individuals over the age of 50 have the highest risk of severe disease. “The Health Department is

operating four mosquitoes monitoring sites and reviewing data from throughout the county to identify “hot spots” for the mosquito that carries WNV,” Cindy Frank, Administrator of the Boone County Health Department said. The Health Department is urging residents to prevent mosquito breeding and to prevent mosquito bites. Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: discard old tires, buckets, barrels, or any water holding containers. Poke drain holes in tires used as bumpers at docks. Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris. Keep trash containers covered. Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use. Drain unused swimming pools. Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water. Change the water in bird baths and plant urns at least once a

week. Store boats upside down or drain rainwater weekly. The Boone County Health Department also recommends practicing the three “Rs”-reduce, repel, and report. Reduce exposure Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night. Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires, and any other receptacles. Repel When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks when outdoors. Mos-

quitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection. Don’t apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin. Do not spray repellent on the skin under your clothing. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants. Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing from dusk to dawn or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times. Report The Health Department is monitoring freshly-dead birds, such as crows or blue jays. The

birds must not show any signs of decay or trauma. To report a dead bird, call (815) 544-2951. Be prepared to give the location, date, and time you found the dead bird. You may also contact the Health Department to report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards, and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes. The Department is relying on county residents to help identify and report potential mosquito breeding areas in and around underdeveloped or abandoned residential building sites and swimming pools. SwedishAmerican wins national organ donation award ROCKFORD — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it is honoring SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, for excellence in support of organ donation. SwedishAmerican was among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for reaching the Silver level of achievement for conducting activities that promoted enrollment in state organ donor registries. This is the third consecutive year SwedishAmerican received the silver status and the fifth year SwedishAmerican has won the award. SwedishAmerican conducted awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors and community members about critical need for organ, eye and tissue donors. By doing this, SwedishAmerican increased the number of potential donors on the state’s donor registry. The hospital earned points for each activity implemented between August 2014 and April 2015 and was awarded silver recognition through the Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL) Hospital Campaign.

“I want to thank our hardworking and dedicated staff who helped make this possible,” Nursing Supervisor John Patterson said. “We are honored to achieve this award. But most importantly, we are honored to advocate organ donation and help donor families have a feeling of purpose surrounding the loss of a loved one.” To learn more about donor and tissue donation and transplantation from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, visit www.organdonor.gov. About SwedishAmerican A division of UW Health, SwedishAmerican is dedicated to providing excellence in healthcare and compassionate care to the community. The organization serves residents of 12 counties in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through a dedicated and caring staff, a major acute care hospital and a free-standing outpatient cancer center in Rockford, a medical center in Belvidere, a network of 30 primary care and multi-specialty clinics and the region’s largest home healthcare agency.

Realtors announces $1800 raised to purchase, donate school supplies

By Kathryn Menue Staff Editor

STATELINE — The Nanaksar Sikh Temple will open in Rockford at 714 3rd Ave on the corner of Kishwaukee Street and 3rd Avenue. The former Catholic Church will now be a place for religious worship, spiritual lectures, meditation, inter-faith conferences, and to educate people, neighbors, and the overall community with religious tolerance and drug awareness. The 30,000 square-foot building, which includes a basement with two additional stories, is currently under renovation. During the renovation, the Sikh Temple will preserve all religious symbols and pictures belonging to the faith of Christianity and donate them to local Christian Churches. “Hopefully, the temple will be open for worship in the middle of September,” Nanaksar Sikh Temple coordinator Baba Ji said. However, the grand opening for the Sikh Temple will not be until the middle of April in 2016. This will be the first Sikh Temple in the area. Before, people would have to drive to Chicago, Milwaukee, or Madison to find such a place of
