omemade, Homegrown is the theme this year for the McHenry County Fair. From the time it opens at 7:30 am Wednesday, August 5, the fair teems with animals, vegetables, fruits, crafts and, of course, baked goods and other kitchen products. Antiques, Art and Photography Shows allow more McHenry County skills, talents and abilities to be displayed throughout the run of the Fair. The Midway, carnival rides, food and vendors give alternatives to passive viewing of the many displays. Wednesday night brings the McHenry County Queen Pageant. On Thursday, a petting zoo opens and shows of various types begin to be performed. A magician varies his shows with displays of hypnotism, bands perform periodically and contests draw in children and adults. Loghoggers is an organization of chainsaw log carving artists. Joe Stebbins is the Loghogger representative at the McHenry County Fair. He is scheduled to give several demonstrations of his art each day of the fair. Stebbins has been chainsaw carving for 11 years. “The process is a lot of fun,” he says. “It is a series of fast decisions.” Stebbins usually does custom work on tree stumps and the like. He only does about 8-12 fairs a year. He will have 16 carvings completed before 3 pm on Sunday when they will be auctioned off. That is, if enough logs are provided. He only has 12 right now. www.loghoggers.net

On Friday, the 4-H Fun Horse Show begins. “It’s ‘Bribe Your Horse Day’,” the announcer remarks as the girls attempt to get their horses to follow them into the arena by carrying feed buckets. The horse is to follow a girl around a barrel and back to the edge of the arena. The quickest time for this activity wins. A Boot Race follows the bribery. Each rider removes one of her boots. The boots are carried across the arena by Boot Holders. The horses race to the boot holders, the riders dismount and pull on their boot. They then run back across the arena with their horse for their prize. www.4-h.org Friday, August 7, holds the 1st Annual Lip Synch Contest at the McHenry County Fair. It is being judges by the members of ‘Blend’, an a capella singing group who is performing at the fair this year. [They are quite good.] At noon, registration for a Pedal Push event begins. This is open in categories from 3-4 years old and up to adult. Miss McHenry County and her entire court participated in both the pedal push and the lip synching. www.blend-acappella.com All of these activities continue from Wednesday through Sunday, August 5 – 9. In addition, the fair holds a MotherDaughter Look-Alike Contest, a Celebrity Look-Alike Contest, a motocross event and a demolition derby. World War II Veterans honor ceremony held By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
The second Sunday of August is designated National Spirit of ’45 Day. It is a celebration of the end of World War II. At 4 pm in Veterans Park in McHenry, crowds have already filled the park, the band is playing ‘40s music and dancers fill the ‘dance floor’ in front of the central gazebo. Several rows of seating are designated for World War II veterans and their families. These rows are filled. Along one side of the park, canopies shade food services and relics of World War II in the way of
military uniforms, helmets, medals, tools and weapons. Another space holds displays of the covers of ‘Time’ magazines from World War II depicting political and military leaders. These covers come from the US, the United Kingdom, China, France and other European countries, the Pacific Theater and other places around the world. At 5 pm, the band is interrupted for a special broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System. The President of the United States and Commanderin-Chief of the Armed Forces, Harry S. Truman is announcing the end
of World War II. The Color Guard, dressed in white uniforms, promenade along the walkway toward the gazebo and present flags. The National Anthem is played and then we all say the Pledge of Allegiance. Rev. Bill of St. Paul’s leads us in prayer. He was a chaplain during the Korean War. At this point, a helicopter from Homeland Security does a flyover to honor the veterans who are present. This is the 6th Annual Spirit of ’45 event in McHenry and it is receiving national recognition. Mayor Lowe presents a speech recognizing the World War II veterans, “You did what
you needed to do. You came back, went to work, raised families and taught us that freedom isn’t free. You are the most humble generation. You don’t talk about it [your experiences during the war] but it is important to all of us that we understand it.” In 2010, Congress declared the second Sunday of August as a day of remembrance for World War II veterans. Today, for the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, each of 28 veterans is being honored with a certificate of

Continued from page 1 distinguished service. Kay Harlow will be 100 years old this year. She is one of the ‘Rosie the Riveters’ who supported the war efforts by taking on essential jobs on the home front. These women worked in manufacturing and in the munitions industries. By 1943, women made up 65% of the workforce in the aviation industry – over 310,000 strong. In Veterans Park, doves are released and we hear the report of a 21 gun salute. ‘Taps’ is played by buglers surrounding the park. They follow up with ‘America the Beautiful’. Robert E. Prinzing is one of the buglers. He tells me, “When I became an Eagle Scout, I got a letter from President Truman.” He entered the military two days following his high school graduation. During World War II, Prinzing served aboard the USS Wisconsin BB-64 as the personal radioman of the admiral. He moved on to become a member of a UDT, an Underwater Demolition
Team. UDT is the precursor of the Navy Seals. Prinzing spent 12 years in the military. He left his UDT to get married to Marilyn, a stewardess for Capitol Airlines. Prinzing began working in the fire service. “She made more in a week than I did in a month,” he smiles. Prinzing and Harlow are part of what is known as the Greatest Generation. They put their country, their faith, their friends and family ahead of themselves. They worked for the common good, for the benefit of everyone in their community, not just for themselves. They began to build the foundation for a better future for their children and future generations. Thank you for your service, both overseas and at home. We salute you. It’s All About Kids By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
“
One day a child can seem perfectly healthy, playing soccer. The next, he is in the hospital.” Mark and Kim Martin are witness to this situation. In 1998, their son Thomas was unexpectedly diagnosed with brain cancer. “He would be 25 now if he had survived,” Mark says. Thomas passed away at the age of 9.
Our long term goal is to provide assistance to one family from each of McHenry County’s eighteen school districts. We’ve found this process richly rewarding and welcome you to join us in this ongoing and worthy endeavor.” However, while he was still in the hospital, Thomas began making a difference in the lives of the other pediatric cancer patients. His Christmas wish was for 25 hats for his friends who were going through chemotherapy with him. This request inspired the first Hat Mixer. “When Thomas attended, his eyes grew as big as saucers when he viewed the 500 hats donated by those in attendance.” Annual mixers, galas and live auctions continue to support children living with cancer in McHenry County and pediatric cancer research. In addition to the 2000 hats that have been collected for young cancer patients, ‘It’s All About
Kids’ is able to help four families with their medical expenses. “The child has to be under 18, demonstrate a need and live in McHenry County. We have a cap of $10,000 per family. Any money we have extra goes to the Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago for research,” says Mark Martin, president of ‘It’s All About Kids’. The group’s expenses are minimal: printing costs and event expenses. They take a ‘bare bones’ approach in their non-profit, volunteer organization. These tactics have resulted in ‘It’s All About Kids’ being able to contribute up to $10,000 to each of 34 families of children living with cancer and over $150,000 for research. On Saturday, August 29, ‘It’s All About Kids’ is holding its 18th Annual Gala Fundraiser. It will be held at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock from 5:30 – 11:30 pm. A semi-formal event, admission is $100 per person. It will include a 50/50 Raffle, silent and live auctions. For the first time, they will have on-line bidding as well as live bidding. “We will have fireworks at the end, weather permitting,” Martin tells me. “Our long term goal,” their brochure explains, “is to provide assistance to one family from each of McHenry County’s eighteen school districts. We’ve found this process richly rewarding and welcome you to join us in this ongoing and worthy endeavor.” Monetary donations and inkind contributions are welcome. Regional Fire Museum looking to relocate By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MARENGO — Presently located in rural Marengo, the Northern Illinois Fire Museum is seeking a new space to call home. Hosted at the 9204 South Route 23, also site of the Meyer Material Pit, the Museum is in search of a new location within the next year to ensure continuing operations. The existing lease runs into 2017, but officials are antic-
ipating being asked to leave early for undisclosed reasons. They have been housed at their current location for over a decade. The Museum board members are hosting a fundraiser in an attempt to procure more funds for the impending move. Presently the museum only hosts approximately one tour per month. In their attempt to find a new location, the board is expressing interest in a setting more conducive to the
traditional museum layout. They have numerous pieces of machinery, equipment, and vehicles that would be on display for attendees to look at and learn about. The history of the items housed in the museum spans for well over a century. The initial fundraiser will be held on August 15 at D’Andrea Banquets, located on the far East end of Crystal Lake off Route 14. Preliminary expectations for the cost of a new space to house the Museum are
Thymes scheduled to open in October By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CRYSTAL LAKE — Thyme Farmer’s Market is finally slated to move into the old Dominick’s location on Route 14 in Crystal Lake. After acquiring a lease agreement in the building over half a year ago, the grocer has taken time to remodel 29,000 square feet of the retail location to best suit their needs. The Crystal Lake location will be the sixth in operation. Other locations include Mount Prospect, Deerfield, and Fairview Heights. They also operate in six additional states throughout the Midwest. Additional locations opening soon are Downers Grove, Naperville, and Joi-
let. Thymes will be leasing from owner Berengaria Development, which bought the 66,000 square building. The rest of the building, located at 5340 Route 14, is fully leased. Other storefronts include Target, Buy Buy Baby, and Kohls. Prior to Berengaria buying the space, the unit had been vacant for over a year since Domick’s ceased their operation. By the time Thyme opens, it will have been just short of two years. Thyme notes their strategy as a simplistic one, focusing on the food they offer and doing without the bells and whistles of unnecessary add-ons in their stores. First time visitors will notice an immediate difference
between their layout and that of Jewel or Wal-Mart Supercenter. The aisles are unnumbered. Gluten-free and even vegetarian/vegan fanatics will find numerous food options within the walls of Thyme once they open their doors. Although a specific date has not been announced, the chain is anticipating a mid-October opening. They are one of several larger storefronts featuring new locations along the Route 14 corridor. Also opening soon is Burlington Coat Factory in the former Toys-R-Us and Marshalls space near Jewel. Hopefully the new businesses will generate additional economic growth in the area.
in the $250,000 range for optimal space. Should the numbers not be feasible, Museum officials would consider smaller space and adjustments or scheduled equipment substitutions in a new location. Ideally, they would like to house the museum and an attached space to generate further income to grow the operation as well. The banquet tickets will be $30 per person, allowing attendees to enjoy lunch and an auction between 11 a.m.

Reduced fee water testing for August MCHENRY COUNTY — In recognition of Safe Drinking Water Month, McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will offer reduced fee water testing for individual well water users from August 1 to August 31. Residents can have their well water sampled for coliform bacteria and nitrate for $18. Testing your well regularly is the only way to determine whether the well water is safe to drink as many contaminants are colorless and odorless. Water from a public or municipal water system is regularly tested for contaminants regulated by Federal and state standards.
Bacteria and chemicals can get into well water and contaminate it in different ways. Some bacteria and chemicals occur naturally. Contaminants such as nitrate can come from animal waste, wastewater, flooded sewers, polluted storm water runoff, fertilizers, agricultural runoff, or decaying plants. High levels of nitrate in drinking water can cause illness in young children and pregnant women. Coliform bacteria are microbes found in the digestive systems of warm-blooded animals, in soil, on plants, and in surface water. Sterile sample containers from the Department are required and are available at
and 3 p.m. A wide variety of items will be offered during the auction, the most appealing of which include various vacations. In the unfortunate event the Museum does not secure enough funds for their upcoming move, they would ultimately need to sell the various items and equipment currently housed within it. For more details or to plan a visit to the museum itself, refer to the Northern Illinois Fire Museum website at ww.nifm.net.
