’Andrea Banquets in Crystal Lake is the location of the first Dinner/Auction Fundraiser for the Northern Illinois Fire Museum (NIFM). The parking lot is lined with a number of historic fire trucks and equipment the NIFM seeks to preserve. Museum Curator, Steve James, is happy to talk about the machines. The oldest piece on display is the 1856 Hunneman pump. It was built by a student of Paul Revere. “This is a horse/hand drawn vehicle that is hand pumped. It can be easily moved by one man. It has been donated to the NIFM by the Harvard Fire Fighters Association.” “When a call for help went out during the Chicago Fire in 1871, Harvard responded. The Hunneman and 15 fire fighters were loaded onto a flatbed railroad car. The railroad provided the flatbed, an engine and a coal car along with an Engineer and a fireman. Intervening towns knew who they were and where they were going and “highballed” them straight through. They reached Chicago in 75 minutes, a new speed record for that era. They battled the fire in the Tannery District

for two days. “Upon completion of their assignment, they loaded the Hunneman back onto the flatcar and returned home.” Another vehicle on display also came to the NIFM from Harvard. This one had been utilized by the Harvard Rural Fire Department which was a
separate group from the Harvard City Fire Department. The two groups merged in 1960. A 1972 Maxim truck belonged to the Chicago Insurance Patrol. While not a part of the fire department, patrol members would respond to fire alarms also. They would
bring tarps to throw over people’s belongings, file cabinets, etc. to prevent water damage from the fire hoses. The Chicago Insurance Patrol operated until the fire department no longer allowed them to enter burning buildings. Several other vintage vehicles are also present, each
carrying its own unique piece of fire fighting history. Once these machines disappear, their history will also be lost. They are currently housed in a rented building just outside of Marengo that needs many repairs. These repairs

MCHENRY — McHenry’s Veterans Park is dedicated today to a Patriots in the Park Family Fun Day. The Joe’s Wish Foundation is hosting this hometown picnic “to give back to a community of patriots who have been supportive in helping raise funds to support our local military families, veterans and veterans’ causes.” Colorful canopies shelter booths which cover a large segment of the park. The vast majority of booths are dedicated to veterans and their causes. Collier House, for example, offers temporary housing for families in crisis who have lost a loved one in the service of our country. Their 2015 campaign is to reach out to Gold Star families – families of those who have died in battle. The next Collier House
fundraising event will be a Spaghetti Dinner on November 7. www.collierhouse.org The McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission will educate vets about the benefit programs available to them. They can help with transportation and financial assistance and they will advocate with the VA for benefits, pension and healthcare for veterans and their families. The McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission has had an 80% success rate with cases this year. They are located at the McHenry County Government Center Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Woodstock, Illinois, 60098. District 155 court case ‘Clear the Shelters’ Day costs city over $225K cleared the shelter at MCAC! By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CRYSTAL LAKE — Legal fees for the ongoing battle between District 155 officials and the City of Crystal Lake have run upwards of $225,000 to date, and the case is not over yet. The case, which began two years ago this month, is ongoing with the state’s Supreme Court. Illinois Supreme Court first heard the case in May after agreeing to take the reigns in late January of this year. Their decision has not been disclosed at this time. While the city continues to combat the blatant disregard for zoning rules and ordinances put forth by the bleacher construction, which initially cost $1.18 million, the district has only incurred just over $70,000, or approximately 1/3 of the city’s cost, in legal fees themselves. Insurance has paid over $300,000 to date, and the district’s law firm has taken the Supreme Court appeal on a pro bono basis, alleviating some of the additional costs it would have incurred as a result. The district did receive a proposal in late May to remove the structure
and place them in what most would call a more appropriate location on the property, away from neighbors and displeased residents. According to the last court ruling in October 2014, the school is accruing daily fines and penalties for the various infractions of city zoning to the tune of $5,000 per day. Should those fines ever reach fruition, the District’s expenses would exceed $1 million in fines and more than cover legal representation for the city in this instance. The soonest a decision could be reached in the case by the Supreme Court would be in September. If the district does not have to pay the accruing fines, the cost will likely affect not only city residents, but those throughout the entire district, which covers an additional four cities/areas outside of the 60014 zip code. If the court decides they find the case in favor of the city and the residents, the District will incur costs upwards of $4 million. That fee will address relocating the bleachers according to plans by FGM Architects provided to Crystal Lake Planning and Zoning Commission.
Sheriff ’s Office investigates a two-vehicle traffic crash WOODSTOCK — Two drivers, Roberto Rivas, 59 of Garden Prairie, and Elijah Drake, 18, of Belvidere, remain in critical condition Monday morning after a two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday at 2:36 p.m., in the 17200 block of Kishwaukee Valley Road, unincorporated Woodstock, Illinois.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the 18-year-old’s 2006 Volkswagen Passat was traveling eastbound on Kishwaukee Valley Road at 2:36 p.m. when it veered into the westbound lane of travel and struck a 2011 Toyota Scion. There were no passengers in either car.
MCHENRY — There are no adoptable cats or dogs left at the McHenry County Animal Control and Adoption Center (MCAC). By 2:30 Saturday the crowd was gone, MCAC staff was exhausted but happy and all of the four-legged adoptees were settling in with their new families. This morning the cages are empty and the volunteers have no animals with which to play. On August 15, MCAC adopted a total of 22 cats and dogs, joining more than 30 shelters across the Chicago area by waiving adoption fees and participating in “Clear the Shelters” Day. This annual event, sponsored nationally by NBC (locally NBC 5) and Telemundo, helped shelters find homes for more than1000 animals throughout Chicagoland and upwards of 18,000 across the country. “Clear the Shelters” began in Texas as a partnership between area NBC and Telemundo affiliates and local animal shelters. The idea caught on and now hundreds of shelters across the country come together for one day in August to waive adoption fees and clear the shelters. “We are in the business of finding homes for all adoptable animals.” said Dr. Lisa Lembke, Veterinary Manager for MCAC, “Waiving the adoption fee for one
day each year not only helps clear the shelters, it reminds people that shelter animals often make wonderful forever pets .” The following story, shared by Kara Plonczynski, Volunteer Coordinator for MCAC, exemplifies the success of the event; “My favorite story was the very last adoption. Baby is a black cat (strike one in shelter world) who does not get along with other cats (strike two in shelter world). Baby has a frost bitten ear, which is missing (strike three, especially on a day where everyone else “seems” more attractive). Well she was our only girl left. We had been closed for about a half hour and I was about to put her back in her cage when I saw a gentleman get out of his car and walk to our closed doors. I met him at the door to tell him we were no longer open and he asked if we had a cat. I could not resist (he reminded me of my dad, and was wearing a Veterans hat) my heart melted! I brought him in and he sat down. Baby crawled out from under the cages (she had had a long chaotic day and I can’t help but think she was very lonely and a bit broken hearted....I know I was for her). She walked up to him and pushed her head into his hand. The rest is history.”

of the NIFM’s limited budget. Therefore, the Northern Illinois Fire Museum is seeking a new home. “We need a building. We need money for a new building,” says NIFM Secretary Tom McDermott. Vice President Corky Carlson tells me, “Our ideal home is a 10,000 square foot building. We need visibility and a sign.” Today’s fundraiser is an effort to obtain what they need to build a new home. They have a possible site for a new building if they can acquire the funding. Woodstock Car Show to benefit food pantry By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
WOODSTOCK — The third Saturday of August has been dedicated to the car show for 15 years. The streets around the Park are closed for the evening and every parking space holds a show car. When those are filled, cars are parked in the streets. Music flows from the Gazebo in the Park, gentle breezes stream through the streets and the setting sun sends its rays dancing and gleaming off the shiny vehicles of the show. Food vendors are stationed around the Park. During its early years, the proceeds from the show went to the Youth Services Bureau. When those organizers stopped doing the show, one family (who wish to remain anonymous) took over. This is the fourth year that Deb and her family are organizing the car show. The proceeds go to a different organization each year. Last year, the proceeds went to Helping Paws. This year, the proceeds are going to the Woodstock Food Pantry. “On the third Saturday of

The list includes Chuck Ruth at Alliance Contractors, Inc. who donated a steer; the music by Double J DJ and Paul at Inverse Squared Productions; food vendors; monetary and raffle donations; trophies and dash plaque donors. The dash plaques for today’s show were designed by Deb’s daughter and son-in-law. As Deb looks around, she is a bit disappointed at the turn out. A storm has discouraged people from coming. “People don’t bring their hot rods out in the rain. It poured earlier today. We are down 100 cars. Normally, we are pushing 300.” They will not be able to give the Woodstock Food Pantry as much as they would like to. The show offers 20 trophies plus a Best in Show which are awarded at 8:30 pm. A 50/50 Raffle drawing occurs immediately following the trophy presentation. The Raffle tables have their winning numbers drawn at 8 pm. It is very well planned and the show volunteers are making everything run smoothly at the 4th Annual Woodstock on the Square Benefit Car Show.
