Faith & Family Day returns By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
W
ith over 400 people attending the first Faith & Family Day in Marengo last year, the event proved so popular that the Marengo-Union Clergy Alliance brought it back this year. Bounce houses, inflatable slides and water games, anchor one end of the event on Washington Street while a craft fair and a display of wooden chairs from the Summer Art Project hold down the other end of the event near Main Street. Food vendors occupy Taylor Street to keep attendees fed and hydrated. A Hospitality Cart cruises throughout the event, assisting the elderly, the infirm, the tired and “too hot” kids get to where they are going. Local bands provide music during the entire event. The concert at the end of the day showcases Danny Gokey. Gokey became nationally known with his appearance in Season 8 of American Idol. He won viewers hearts when they learned that he auditioned for the show just four weeks following his wife’s death in July, 2008. A huge fan of the show, Sophia Gokey passed away from complications following her third surgery for a congenital heart disease. Danny Gokey finished third in the American Idol competition and began recording songs and travelling with the American Idol tour. In 2009, he began the Sophia’s Heart Foundation to help disadvantaged children. He also started his own line of eyewear to benefit the foundation. He remarried in 2012 and has two children.
Some Faith & Family Day visitors speculate how much it cost to have Danny Gokey perform today. While the exact figure has not been disclosed, “We had a lot of generous donors,” Pastor Wade Heimer of Marengo First – Assembly of God church, tells me. “Danny Gokey was also very generous with us.” “The crowd at the end was bigger than last year,” states Heimer. “It was hard to keep count. People filtered in and out. When it got too hot, they would go home, then come back.” He also says, “We had more church participation this year. Nine churches were involved.” Supporters of Faith & Family Day include: George Regas and Thrivent Financial who provided the stage for the bands; the Union Lion’s Club; Intren; Mr. Freeze; Kay & Joe’s; Cody’s Farm; Rev. Keck Mowry; Don & Sue Lockhart; Jumper’s Jumpies; Zion Lutheran School; Marengo Dental; Advanced Disposal; Lindsey NAPA Auto Parts and the Marengo-Union Funeral Home. WXMR 94.3 FM Marengo Community Radio is represented at Faith & Family Day by Pam Gitta, DJ for ‘New Stuff Saturday’ at 10-11 am, Saturdays, and Jayme Sandman, station manager, who works with the students at Marengo Community High School. “Give us a listen!” they tell me. You might be able to catch Danny Gokey on Marengo Radio if you tune in. They can be found at 94.3 FM on the radio or online at www.wxmr. org Information on Faith & Family Day can be found online at www.faithandfamilyday.com.

Summer toy drive kicks off Toys for Tots campaign By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
WOODSTOCK — The indoor shade of the Mixin Mingle is very welcome after the sunshine and heat of Saturday, July 25. The Woodstock Square is hosting the usual Farmers Market but it is Christmas in July at the Mixin Mingle, located at 124 Cass Street, Woodstock or online at www.mixinmingle.com. The 2nd Annual Toys for Tots Toy drive & Fun Fair is in full swing by midday. “There aren’t enough toy drives in the summer,” Cory Lockwood of WHIW 101.3 FM Harvard Community Radio says. “The idea was born because a lot of people are strapped at Christmas.” Lockwood is partnering with Michelle Rentschler of Girlz Just Wanna Have Fun Events to organize and run today’s fun fair and toy collection. “Last year we got three boxes full ,” Lockwood continues. The City of Woodstock and Toys for Tots both asked us to have this event again.” Today, visitors receive goodie bags and free children’s
hair styling. Also available are face painting and tattoos (temporary, not real). These are provided by some of the supporting businesses present at the Mixin Mingle. Abbie McCully, independent consultant for Lilla Rose flexible hair accessories brought an elf assistant to add to the holiday ambiance. Toi Rivers, CEO of Noir 23 is present as is Marjie Lullo, independent consultant for Jamberry nail wraps. Michelle Rentschler is doing double duty by representing Mary Kay Cosmetics at the event as an independent consultant as well as co-hosting the fun fair for Girlz Just Wanna Have Fun Events. Also supporting today’s fun is Denise Heisner of Juice Plus and representatives from 31 Gifts, Malibu Bay, Tastefully Simple, Young Living, Partylite, Pzazz, Scentsy, Younique, and Mary & Pat Jewelry. All donations received today will be given away at Christmas to children in need. Toys for Tots is an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. “The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver,
through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens,” says the official Toys for Tots website located at www.toysfortots. org Toys for Tots plays an active role in local communities, uniting members of the community in a common cause – providing joy for children. Besides the toy drive during October, November and December, Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators can develop other activities throughout the year. These can include golf tournaments, bicycle races and other voluntary events. They are designed to generate interest in Toys for Tots and increase donations of toys and monetary donations. WHIW 101.3 FM can be seen online at: www.whiw. org. Girlz Just Wanna Have Fun Events can be found on Facebook at: Girlz Just Wanna Have Fun Events. See photos on page 4.

McHenry County coffee shop location may serve alcohol By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MCHENRY — Coffee industry magnate Starbucks is trying to maneuver their way into a new industry. Posing the idea of an aptly titled ‘evenings menu,’ the company is selecting various locations throughout the country to test their new plan. The Starbucks corporation has approached the Village of Algonquin for permission to try selling alcoholic beverages at one location in particular. The Starbucks shop located at 790 S. Randall Road is poised to be one of the first to test the evening offer-
ings if approved by the village. The ‘evenings menu’ poses more than just alcohol, however. In addition to adult beverages, the company is toying with the idea of small dinner-type dishes and hot appetizers as well. Presently the company produces hot and cold coffee, teas, blended beverages, and breakfast style breads and pastries, which can be warmed up upon request. There are also limited numbers of refrigerated foods to choose from. Adding the evenings menu would bring a new dynamic to the corporation. Starbucks is not attempting to be a full service bar. The details unveiled
state’s liquor commission. Although the idea is still very much up in the air, such a change to Starbucks menu, here in our area and in all other locations, will most likely change the dynamic of the store. Customers who have become accustomed to quiet nights at the coffee shop while tackling work and studies may ultimately be battling to keep their focus if alcohol becomes readily available. Whether any given person partakes is a personal choice, but the building will likely see a lot more dinner type traffic and conversation than they do presently.
thus far show a focus on craft beer and wines, servicing a particular pallet as opposed to seeking generic return. During the last Algonquin Committee meeting of July, trustees did vote to increase the number of Class F, which limits sales to beer and wine only, from 7 allowable licenses to 8. The Village Board will vote on the matter the first week of August. Approval by the Board does not guarantee Starbucks the eighth license, however. Regardless of the amount of licenses allowed by the village, the company will still have to formally apply for a license and receive approval from the

Add college savings account to back to school list STATELINE — Make sure a college savings plan is on your back-to-school list. For $25, anyone can open a college savings account. You do not need to be a parent. You do not even need to be related to the child. For $25, you can set the expectation that college graduation is attainable. A child who knows they have a college savings account is seven times more likely to attend college. An account can be opened at www.illinoistreasurer.gov. Click College Savings and choose either Bright Start or Bright Directions. Both will launch the path to success. You do not need to be an investment expert to open a college savings account. Most people choose a fund based on the age of the child. However,
if you enjoy picking specific investments, you can do that, too. Of course, it is best if you can add a little bit of money each month. But if you cannot, do not let that stop you from opening an account. A college degree or technical school certificate puts a person in a position to succeed. We know that educational attainment is the best predictor to employability. That is because employers associate a degree or certificate with a person who is dependable, responsible and trainable. “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest,” is a quote often attributed to Benjamin Franklin. As you prepare to send your loved one back to school, show them their college savings plan so they know they can be a part of the American Dream. 212406

Tenderhearted tough guys – and Chippy
I
was all set to write this week’s column about an incident that happened yesterday when I was cleaning lettuce from the garden and came across a lovely green caterpillar. The creature wriggled in the sink, stretching upward, trying to find a foothold for its escape. I called my son’s attention to “Greenie,” and he plucked the critter from the sink and headed toward the back door to put the little guy outside. “Don’t put him anywhere near the lettuce,” I said. I was all set to write about a day earlier this summer when my husband and I found two baby squirrels dead in the middle of the road near our driveway and he got a shovel and dug a hole and we buried them in our backyard. I was all set to write about caterpillars and squirrels and a few more of my family’s critter-related habits when our cat let out a low, guttural meow in the dining room. Instinctively, I got up and stood on my chair. When my son (in the family room) bolted from the couch toward the cat and exclaimed, “Oh my goodness!” I knew my initial analysis of the situation had been correct. We had a crisis on our hands. When my cat lets out a deep, raspy meow, it’s because he is announcing, with pride, that he’s brought home a trophy. After years of cat ownership (or more correctly, being owned by cats) I’ve learned a cat’s trophy is often alive. Hence my perch on the chair. “It’s a chipmunk!” My son announced. “And it’s alive!” A chipmunk in the dining room. Things could have been worse. Once it was a snake. A live chipmunk meant one thing. I jumped down from the chair knowing we were now in rescue mode. I grabbed the cat and ran upstairs to put him in the bedroom while my son stood guard over the chipmunk. With the cat safely out of the way, I returned to the scene of the crime. Chippy (we gave him a nickname) sat rigid under the table, undoubtedly scared out

of his little chipmunk mind. Our plight was further complicated by the piano – an old and heavy upright – also in the dining room. If Chippy ran under it, we were in trouble. It was clear we needed reinforcements. I went to get a big brother. The two boys and I surrounded the table, assessing our options. One son stood in front of the piano, blocking access. The other held a plastic cake cover. In one deft movement the cake cover became a chipmunk cover. We had the little guy secured. Next we slid a large book under the cake cover to create a floor for Chippy and we carried him out to the backyard. “Run free, little Chippy. Run free.” After a moment’s hesitation, he did. And we returned to the house. Back to the everyday routine of normalcy that makes up our lives. We let the cat out of the bedroom and he is strutting around like a 14-year old declawed chipmunk stalker who still considers himself boss of the neighborhood. His tail is riding high. He is confined to the house for a while, to give Chippy a chance to recoup and recover, but the cat doesn’t much care. He knows how awesomely great he is. Some days I think I live with too many rough and rowdy guys – and I’m not referring to the cat. Today wasn’t one of them. Today we saved a chipmunk’s life. In the scheme of things that’s something. At least around here it is. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Don’t miss a slice; follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

and gourmet food currently offered by Seasons by Peg. Lynes is opening conversations with local food vendors such as Pirro’s which offers American Old World-Style Pasta Sauces. She would like to enlarge
the store’s offerings of edible items. She is also beginning discussions with local vendors of non-perishable items. She plans to expand the children’s and the young adult sections of the bookstore. She will
include arts and crafts as well as educational toys. Lynes is considering using the large tree

oodstock’s home town bookstore has flourished on the historic Woodstock Square. Just down the street, Seasons by Peg has also been an established and successful part of the business community in Woodstock for years. For the past eight years, Seasons by Peg has been known for its ever changing stock and window display. The store is always stocked with seasonal home décor items from small to large. With the recent announcement of owner Peg Fenstermaker’s retirement, everything in the store is going on sale (50% off of non-food items). The closing of Seasons by Peg means that the retail location will be available for another business and Arlene Lynes is jumping at the opportunity this presents. By moving just one block, from 129 Van Buren Street to 111 Van Buren Street, Read Between the Lynes will be gaining more room while maintaining an excellent shop location. Lynes plans to keep the candies and coffees, ice cream
in the store as a center for story-telling and reading books to children. For those who write, Lynes will be adding an area for stationery and cards and will be enlarging the store’s selection of journals. Another new segment of the store will be filled with souvenirs of Woodstock which will be perfect for gifts for friends and relatives as well as for visitors to take home as reminders of the time they have spent in Woodstock - home of the movie “Groundhog Day”. It has also been named “America’s Prettiest Small Town” by the Ladies’ Home Journal. Read Between the Lynes will be moving into the new location in early October. The Grand Opening is being planned for Saturday, October 24. For more information, Read Between the Lynes can be found on Facebook at: Read Between the Lynes. Season’s By Peg also has a Facebook page. It is located at Seasons by Peg.
