FOX LAKE — On the morning of Tues Sep 1, Lieutenant Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was gunned down and killed in the line of duty. Gliniewicz had been on the force for 30 years and had previously served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. Lt. Gliniewicz was 52 years old and in his death left behind his wife and four children. His death marks the first on-duty death in the history of the Fox Lake Police Department. According to the dispatch Lt. Gliniewicz radioed in to on the morning of his death, he was pursuing three males; two white, one black, whom struck the officer as acting suspicious near the intersection of Route 12 and Sayton Road in Fox Lake. The area the tragedy took

place in is described as rather desolate with a lot of empty fields and abandoned buildings. Lt. Gliniewicz was LT. JOE pursing the GLINIEWICZ three men on foot when he lost connection with dispatchers. His body was found by responding officers in for back up just after 8 a.m. The two responding officers immediately began to search for the suspects. When the fallen Lieutenant was found, his firearm was missing. As of Thursday evening, whether or not Gliniewicz was killed by his own weapon had not yet been divulged. A manhunt was launched almost instantly
after his body was discovered and utilized over 400 additional police focusing on an area of approximately two square miles. The search concluded over 14 hours later at 10:30 p.m. The firearm was recovered near the scene on Thursday, but the suspects have remained at large. The manhunt for the three men has continued with reduced manpower and a large radius through Thursday. Neighborhoods throughout the town continue to be canvassed by officers in search of the three men. Police are contacting local businesses and homeowners in search of any potential clues or security footage. As of Thursday evening, one homeowner’s security camera footage had been sent to Homeland Security for review. In addition to Fox Lake Police, U.S. Marshals, ATF,
FBI, the Illinois State Police, officers throughout the Northern Illinois area, and SWAT teams were assisting in search efforts. On Wednesday, Fox Lake schools were closed to ensure the safety of staff and students alike. Police presence remains increased while the subjects are still at large. Community members held a vigil in remembrance of the fallen Lieutenant on Wednesday evening at Lakefront Park. Masses of people, many holding signs with “G.I. Joe”, a nickname the Lieutenant held, showed their support publicly throughout the day and at the vigil itself. A press conference was held on Thursday and the hunt has no signs of slowing down. His family, alongside fellow officers and an outpouring of the community, stood tall in their belief that the men responsible
for the murder of Lt. Gliniewicz would be found soon. Funeral arrangements have been determined for the fallen officer. His visitation will take place at Antioch Community High School, located at 1133 Main Street, on Mon. Sept 7 beginning at 9 a.m. A funeral will follow beginning at 1 p.m. and the procession will lead attendees to Hillside East Cemetery following the service. Burial will be at 450 E. Depot Street in Antioch. Anyone with leads regarding the at-large suspects in this case are strongly encouraged to call local police, 911, or the Lake County Sheriff’s office at 847-549-5200 as quickly as possible. Tips can also be sent to Fox Lake Police Department at 847-587-3100. Lieutenant Gliniewicz will be sorely missed by many.

Take flyers door to door. • Notify authorities, local animal shelters, vet clinics and police to report your dog missing. • Tell the search party NOT to chase or call the dog. Have them sit and toss treats to the side of the dog to lure the dog in. • Post ads in the Lost and Found section of Craigslist and other internet sites and on the Facebook page of Lost Dogs

Crystal Lake dispute turns into police search, lockdown By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CRYSTAL LAKE — On the afternoon of Tues Sept 1, an alleged dispute in Crystal Lake escalated to a police search and area schools being on lockdown. Daniel Hawkins, a 23 year old Crystal Lake resident, was charged with aggravated assault after an accusation states he was wielding a firearm in the 1700 block of Somerfield Lane that afternoon. Allegedly Hawkins and another man were in a verbal altercation outside a home on Somerfield where Hawkins drew a firearm and
pointed it at him. At first news outlets reported this was related to the shooting death of Lieutenant Gliniewicz earlier that day in Fox Lake, but that was quickly corrected. The two events are unrelated. Responding officers to the complaint executed a search and developed a perimeter around Hawkins’ residence as well as the subdivision the home is located in. Officers were under the impression Hawkins was inside the residence, but after they attempted to enter and apprehend him to no avail, the perimeter was lifted. During the search, all non-emergency traffic was
barred on Golf Course Road between Miller and Village roads for two to three hours that afternoon. Responding officers quickly opened the area once they determined Hawkins was not in the home or neighborhood. Nearby schools in Districts 300 and 47 were placed on lockdown as Hawkins was not immediately found. Crystal Lake Police ultimately issued a warrant for Hawkins arrest and schools were removed from lockdown and operating as usual by Wednesday. Hawkins turned himself in to the police department on Wed Sept 2 peacefully. He
Local minister arrested and charged with possession of child porn WOODSTOCK — Rev. Timothy Williams, 50, was arrested Friday, August 28 at his home in the 500 block of Brookdale Road, Woodstock, and charged with six counts of Possession of Child Pornography. An eight-month investigation began in early January with a Cyber Tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office executed a search warrant at Williams’s residence in July. As a result of that warrant, electronic evidence was removed from Williams’s home. Images containing child pornography and online chat messages with reference to child pornography and other deviant sexuality were found on Williams’s computer. Williams was a minister at the Heritage Baptist Church in Greenwood, Illinois. He was removed from the church website a day after the Sheriff’s
Department executed the warrant on his home. Further investigation into the matter will continue. Anyone having information regarding Williams is encouraged to contact the McHenry County Sher-
iff’s Department at 815-3344750. Williams is currently in the McHenry County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He was charged with six counts of Child Pornography, each a Class 2 Felony.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office investigating single vehicle crash MARENGO — A 65-yearold Marengo man was pronounced dead at the hospital, Friday, August 28, after the vehicle he was driving crashed in the 7000 block of Maple Street in unincorporated Marengo. Preliminary investigation indicated that the 65-yearold’s 2003 Dodge truck was traveling southbound on Maple Street when it exited the roadway to the east, then returned to the roadway, and again exited the roadway to the east causing the vehicle to roll over.
The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge, Michael Meyerhoff was transported by ambulance to Centegra Hospital in Woodstock and later flown by helicopter to St. Anthony’s in Rockford, where he later died. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. There was no airbag deployment. An investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit and the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office. Members of the Marengo Fire Protection District assisted at the scene.

Two Marengo men charged with burglaries of lawn equipment MARENGO — Two Marengo men were arrested and charged Friday, August 28, with a series of area burglaries that netted more than 40 pieces of commercial-grade lawn equipment, such as backpack leaf blowers; weed trimmers; hedge trimmers; and similar tools, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The pair allegedly targeted landscaping businesses’ trailers. Terrance McNulty, 26, and David Westra, 27, of the 800 block of Woodland Lane, Marengo, were charged with various counts of burglary, theft and criminal damage to property following a twomonth investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. The MCSO took its first related burglary report to a landscaping business in the Woodstock area on July 29th. Over the next several weeks, the Sheriff’s Office took nine more reports of burglaries to landscaping businesses. Information developed
by the MCSO led to McNulty and Westra as being possibly involved. The Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant, with the help of the Carpentersville and Marengo Police Departments, and was able to gain enough evidence to arrest McNulty and Westra. McNulty and Westra are currently in the custody of the McHenry County Correctional Facility. The Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone that believes they may have information that could assist with this investigation to contact our Investigations Division at 815-338-2144. Terrance McNulty, a 26-yearold male and David Westra, a 27-year-old male were both charged with 9 counts of burglary (Class 2 Felony), 9 counts of theft (Class 3 Felony), 1 attempted burglary (Class 3 Felony), and 1 criminal damage to property (Class A misdemeanor). Their bond amounts and next court dates are still pending.

Fourth Friday at the Starline Gallery has added a new feature to their popular art show events. By special arrangement, the Stanchion Pub in the Starline Factory has a casual meal available for 4th Friday attendees. The Stanchion Pub, located at the 306 W. Front Street entrance of the Starline Factory is providing burgers and brats on Friday, August 28. It is a build-yourown-sandwich bar with condiments, cole slaw and a dessert available to choose from. (Delicious, by the way.) “The Stanchion Pub is available for rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, casual occasions and small groups,” John Ullrich tells me. Ullrich is part of the management team for the Starline Factory. “The 279,000 square foot building has gone through extensive renovations in the last few years.” The building now boasts a new elevator and sprinklers and
all safety regulations have been met yet the function rooms still hold their unique historic feel. “We are primarily a banquet venue. The Pub can handle small functions with a BBQ theme. On a 4th Friday, we average about 600 people. We have a 3500 square foot kitchen that can handle four functions at a time. There are no warmers, the food comes straight out of the ovens.” One of the banquet rooms is the Starline 1883. This is a “2-tier function room.” It has a main room and a large balcony. VIEWPOINT
The gifts of summer E
ach day comes bearing gifts. But not in the way you might think. I wake in anticipation of the presents they have left for me this time. “They” are not leprechauns or Santa’s elves. The gifts in question come from my kids. Yeah, I find it hard to believe myself. When I enter the kitchen each morning, I’m guaranteed at least one cardboard pizza round left over from the last night’s midnight feast. Pizza cardboard is much too valuable to toss in the trash, if they could locate the trash (which I’m not sure they could). They also leave me charred pizza nibbles at the bottom of the oven. In a word: yum. Almost as steadfast as the cardboard are errant ramen noodles, which are sure to be scattered on the countertop and (on good days) the stovetop. Sometimes soggy ramen rem-
nants rest in the sink, but only on those rare and lucky days ending in Y. Also in the sink I find hardened, congealed and coagulated food scraps on plates and forks. It’s like a little guessing game. What scrumptious morsels did they partake in during the wee hours of the morning? They’ve also taken to baking cakes. At midnight. They eat the whole thing because they know I wouldn’t want to be tempted by cake first thing in the morning. My needs are their priority and as a mom my pride surges. They do allow me to clean the cake pan, which I guess is their way of sharing the experience with me. The floor – oh the floor! It is probably the best part. Cheese puffs, candy bits, grapes, potato chip crumbs and even sticky red juice globs all scatter across the floor in a random pattern that demonstrates their artistic
Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE
talents. It is a wealth of sticky, crunchy foodstuff and it is mine to deal with. All mine. Candy wrappers stuffed behind the computer or TV are like little treasure hunting finds. Bright and lively all yellow and orange, they practically scream joy – either that or sugar high. Cups half full of juice, soda pop or milk litter flat surfaces in the kitchen and beyond. Except I suppose litter is a poor choice of words because it connotes negativity. Them leaving me their extra drinks is thoughtful and generous. They drink less so I can access their leftovers. How sweet is that?
Despite their inability to find the garbage for most things, I can always rest assured it will be heaping and waiting to be emptied. Sometimes one of them makes late night coffee (the best time for coffee so I’m told) and most (but never all) of the coffee grounds are dispensed to the trash. The rest wait for me on the floor next to the garbage can. I give thanks it was a near miss. They were trying. There’s yet another reason for gratitude: at least one of them has successfully located the garbage. They also move furniture, depending on the activity of the evening. Sometimes, as I am hefting a chair or table from one place to another, I fantasize about what they were doing and how much fun they were having while rearranging the living room. Dirty socks, crumpled T-shirts and discarded shorts only ensure my job stability as the
prestigious CLO (Chief Laundry Organizer) of the household. The same goes for damp towels, which may be located in any room, as long as they are heaped on the floor. Towel bars are so 1990s. Ditto that for using a towel more than once. That would be gross. Well, more gross than leaving dirty socks and wet towels lying all over the house. I suppose I’m to blame for these gifts. Don’t be too hard on me. Summer is short – as is life. Sometimes you have to pick your battles (and dirty socks) and learn to laugh at the rest of it. Or at least know they didn’t go to bed hungry, see the glass as half full and (of course) let them eat cake. Jill Pertler is an award-winning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. The Brady Bunch and today’s pop culture generation gap
S
ome things get lost between the generations, like mainly pop culture references. I exposed my boys to much of the music of my youth, but I failed them in the TV trivia department. My sons, age 21 and 22, cannot name the six Brady Bunch children. They both knew Marsha, and one named Peter as well. People my age are shocked at this lack of basic knowledge. My guys shrug and say that show was on twenty years before they born. Some things that I expect “everyone” to know simply do not matter to millennials. They did know Popeye and that he ate spinach to get strong, but they didn’t know his lady friend was Olive Oyl. They had heard of Underdog, but didn’t know the name Sweet Polly Purebread. They knew Jonny Quest. When I asked if they knew had a thing for “the little red-haired girl,” no reply. Not interested. And I bet they don’t give a rip about the new Charlie Brown movie coming to theaters in the fall. I get it. I’m not interested in much of their viewing habits. That’s the true generation gap; not that we don’t know each other’s “stuff,” we simply aren’t that intrigued. Some of what my sons find funny bounces right off of me. We agree on some things (Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart), but a marathon of The Hangover movies, no thanks. The nature of life is different strokes for different folks, and some of it is age related. Some of today’s pop culture fascinates me. The recent gaming tourna-

ment, The International (TI), is one such phenomenon. The prize pot is about $18 million and most of it is fan funded. Video gamers around the world chip in a buck and they tune in to see the top teams play a video game. They also come in the flesh. A huge stadium in Seattle was filled with fans watching the teams battle it out on a huge jumbotron screen. TI is in its fifth year and I am wowed by the whole thing, but I have no desire to watch. My
younger son had it on while I was in his room so he explained a bit to. The game they play is DOTA2, Defenders of The Ancients. There is much strategy in choosing their heroes. That was the part I saw. Very slow and not compelling viewing. When the game started, it made no sense to me and I shrugged and walked away. I simply do not care. Much like my sons do not care about what rocked my boat as a kid. No big deal. As it should be. Progress, innovation, technology, expansion, I’m all for it. If it weren’t the norm, we all would still be playing jacks and kick the can. A little nostalgia is good. My sons learned to play jacks and marbles when they were kids. But today’s kids get tablets when
they’re two and many never go in a car without an electronic device. I am not passing judgement or lamenting. Our granddaughter is five and she loves hanging with us. Our time together is lowtech. She loves to dig in the dirt, plant flowers, go to the park, draw and paint and create. Every once in a while we watch a movie. This winter when
we do turn on the telly, I think I know what I will introduce her to. “Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!” Some things can simply skip a generation. (Kelly Epperson Simmons grew up watching the Brady Bunch on Friday nights. Write info@kellyepperson.com or PO Box 2324, Loves Park, IL 61131.)

Wind in the (Fox)Willows By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
The overnight downpour has lightened into intermittent showers on the morning of Saturday August 29. Rich’s Foxwillow Pines Nursery is holding a Hosta Sale, Bolivian Arts & Crafts Fundraiser and a Conifer Rendezvous. The Eyres have rounded up a distinguished group of experts for a full day of plant education and entertainment. They have placed all of this within gorgeous surroundings of slow-growing and unique trees and plants. “We are a nursery that specializes in dwarf and unusual conifers and other unusual plants,” Susan Eyre says. “We know we have increased the variety of plants in the Midwest.” The Conifer Rendezvous is a garden event which features several different activities today. Rich & Susan Eyre, owners of Rich’s Foxwillow Pines Nursery, Inc., have been foresighted enough to set up tent canopies to keep participants out of the wet weather. They are also providing coffee and baked goods in the morning and bringing in pizza for lunch. At 10:00 am, Tom Micheletti begins to identify hostas for people who bring in a leaf from their unidentified hosta plant. Micheletti is the founder and first president of the Northern Illinois Hosta Society. He is also a former president of the
American Hosta Society as well as the Midwest Regional Hosta Society. Also, at 10:00 am, “Tips of the Trade: Pruning Conifers and Other Trees” begins. Dave Graham, Registered Wisconsin Landscape Architect (#137) and ISA (International Society of Arborists) Certified Arborist (#311) discusses the basics of pruning trees, especially conifers. Here are a few of his tips: “Sterilize your pruning tools with a 10% bleach solution or alcohol to prevent spreading pathogens.” “Disease can go in through the root system, or up top or by bugs who feast on tree wounds.” “As long as your shears are sharp, it’s fine.” Keep your tools sharp whether they are loppers, saws, shears or scissors. “Make cuts when the branches are smaller. Do not leave a large wound.” “Trim at an angle so it drains off water.” A Hypertufa Workshop begins at 11:00 am. Master Gardener Cindy Hayden shows us how to create a ‘fake concrete’ planter for small alpines, mini conifers (she is also a bonsai expert), hostas, sedum, succulents and more. At 1:00 pm, author Mark Zilis of A to Z Perrenials discusses hostas. He has run Q & Z Nursery for 22 years and has introduced hundreds of new hostas. He has authored “Mark Zilis Field Guide to Hostas”, The Hostapedia” and “The Hosta
Handbook.” He has brought copies of his newest book with him. Zilis is followed by “30 Plus Sedoms in 30 Minutes” at 2:00 pm. Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennial Garden is our speaker for this specialty. Horvath has been breeding plants for over 20 years and has developed more than 50 unique plants. He is the author of “The Plant Lover’s Guide to Sedoms”. All proceeds from the hosta sales throughout the year go to assist Heifer International in their efforts to end world hunger and poverty and in caring for the earth. Heifer, Int. provides resources to help struggling families build sustainable futures. Each family who receives help from Heifer, Int., passes help along to another family and sets up a cycle of change as each family partners with Heifer, Int. and assists another family by passing on help, resources and training. The Bolivian Arts & Crafts Sale proceeds will go to the non-profit organization Mano a Mano, International as they build schools, clinics and roads in Bolivia. They also work on irrigation projects there and provide airplanes for medical emergencies.
