it’s apple picking time!

By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT

“We have a wonderful crop this year,” says Sue Ellen Arndt. “The apples are really looking good.” Saturday, September 3, is opening day at Prairie Sky Orchard in Union, Illinois. Cars are pulling in early and everyone is eager to pick apples. “The Honey Crisp and the Gala are ready for picking. We have a bountiful crop. Our guys mulched all summer to help retain moisture. I think it will be a very good year, a fun year,” Arndt tells me. “The Zestar is a newer apple. It is a late August apple. A lot of people have never tried it. It has a kind of a

We also serve apple pie (you can get it with ice cream if you like) and apple dumplings. People tell us we have the best apple cider donuts around.” The donuts are also only available on weekends. leading to the park. “The police said traffic was backed up all the way across town,” says festival volunteer Steve Cesarz. “Attendance was fantastic.” “Friday, we parked about 3000 cars containing 3-4 people each. A conservative estimate is that 8-9000 people attended,” Kelly told me Saturday morning. “We expect even more today.” The fair gates opened at 6:00 am on Saturday and Sunday and remained open until the 9:30 pm closing. Harvard’s first Balloon Fest offers far more than just hot air balloons. A carnival offers games and rides; live bands perform each day and local groups perform demonstrations such as aikido. A zip line, climbing wall, inflatables join a craft fair and other activities are provided. Food, a beer tent, and Rocky the Raptor! Of Jurassic Adventures Chicago appear throughout the event. A balloon night glow illuminates the evening in a breathtaking display each evening. While most of the hot air balloons fly both early morning and evening, one balloon stays at the fairgrounds to provide tethered balloon rides. Anchored at four corners, the balloon carries passengers about 30 feet into the air before returning to earth. “I do this every weekend,” teth-

ered balloon pilot, Glen O’Connell says. “I don’t have many openings in my schedule.” O’Connell is licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a hot air balloon pilot. It takes about a year of training to fly a hot air balloon, assuming you already have a FAA pilot’s license. The balloon training includes written, oral and flight tests as well as logging flight hours. To take passengers up, the pilot must undergo even more training and obtain a commercial pilot’s license. The balloons themselves must be built to FAA standards and undergo a 3-4 hour inspection for every 100 hours of flight time. Even then, weather conditions can put a stop to all flights before they get off the ground. The pilots will not take passengers up in stormy weather or high winds. “Safety is our primary concern,” Kelly says. “The pilots are very experienced. Most of them are local, from northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin. We also have pilots from Arizona and Iowa, just because they wanted to come and fly here.” The hot air balloon pilots that helped make this festival a huge success are listed at the event website www.harvardballoonfest.com. You can also visit their Facebook page at Harvard Balloon Fest.

McHenry County Board green lights I-90 and Route 23 interchange At the Tues. Sept 6 meeting, the McHenry County Board voted in favor of helping fund the prospective interchange for I-90 and Route 23 south of Marengo. This vote comes after Marengo City Council approved documents and agreements in early August relevant to the various financial contributions necessary to move ahead. Their approval involves a $2.7 million commitment from the county to the project. The rest of the funding will be allocated to state agencies. The City of Marengo has invested approximately $350,000 on studies, annexation, and plans surrounding the proposal to date. There is still additional annexation necessary to have the space needed for the interchange construction. The project is expected to cost approximately $32 million once everything is completed. The bulk of the expense will be paid by the Illinois State Tollway Authority as well as the Illinois Department of Transportation. The construction will involve building

on and off ramps as well as bridge expansion and reconstruction. The interchange will be the first ANNE EICKSTADT PHOTOS and only in McHenry County. The There are many new products available at Prairie Sky Orchard this year. gateway linking I-90 to Route 23 will provide a more direct route into not only Marengo, but north into Harvard as well. Projected economic impact exceeds $538 million on the low end and over $1.5 billion on the high end. Whether those numbers will be accurate or not will remain unknown until the interchange is up and functional. The current projection is to have the interchange completed in full during 2020. The County vote saw only a single no from Diane Evertsen out of Harvard. All other board members were in favor of the project. Now that the County has given its approval, bids are being sought out for review. Bid collection should be complete this fall. The project has been merged into the current McHenry County Transportation Plan. Current timeline expects that the bridge will be reconstructed next year in 2017 and ramp construction will begin after that project is completed.

ginia, Crystal Lake, Ill., on March 30, 2015, and the Fifth Third Bank branch located 1745 S. Eastwood Dr., Woodstock, Ill., on April 15, 2015. Michael L. Feterick, 46, was sentenced to 49 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay restitution of $7,062. Feterick, who pleaded guilty on May 25, 2016, admitted that when he entered each bank he presented a note stating, “Money, no dye pack,” to a bank teller. Both tellers provided Feterick with money from the tellers’ drawers, and Feterick then left the banks. Feterick was arrested on April 15, 2015, by the FBI and officers of the Crystal Lake and Woodstock Police Departments, at a hotel in Algonquin, Ill. Feterick has remained in federal custody since his arrest. The sentencing was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Michael J. Anderson, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of Federal Bureau of Investigation; John L. Lieb, Chief of the Woodstock, Illinois Police Department; and James R. Black, Chief of the Crystal Lake, Illinois Police Department. The U.S. Marshals Service, and law enforcement officers of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and the Algonquin, Illinois Police Department assisted in the investigation. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph C. Pedersen.

A referendum geared to taking some of the politics out of redistricting won’t be on the Nov. 8 general election ballot. The state Supreme Court on Aug. 25, in a 4-3 vote along party lines, kept the referendum off the Nov. 8 general election ballot. That despite petitions signed by 570,000 registered Illinois voters who wanted to have future state and federal legislative lines drawn by other than the majority party. “Given the narrow interpretation of the Illinois Constitution by the courts, the only apparent way to change redistricting is through legislative action,” State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Sycamore, said. “That will take a lot more public pressure on legislators than they feel today.” Still, he was optimistic. “With the current voter dissatisfaction with both established parties, perhaps a miracle will happen,” he said. State Rep. Joe Sosnowski, RRockford, said Aug. 25, will be remembered as the day when the voices of 570,000 Illinois voters were suppressed by a court system’s partisan vote. In his dissenting opinion, Justice Robert Thomas stated, “The Illinois Constitution is meant to prevent tyranny, not to enshrine it.” Sosnowski said the map-process is rigged. “The political games are so entrenched in Illinois’ history that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly where it became about advancing a party’s initiative rather than the people’s, but the rise of [House] Speaker [Michael] Madigan’s influence in the mapmaking process after the 1980 census providing a starting point.” “We need this [redistricting] reform in all states, but Illinois especially highlights why the system is broken. Residents want balance, compromise, and good government,” Sosnowski continued. “The counterweight, who fear political retribution from the Chicago machine, blindly ignored the will of the people and the common sense of the Illinois Constitution.” Pritchard said this was the second unsuccessful attempt in as many years to place a constitutional amendment before voters. Efforts to revise the way district boundaries are drawn became intense after the 2010 revisions orchestrated in Illinois by the Democratic Party. For example, state Senate District 35 lines were changed to pit two popular, incumbent senators against each other in the Republican primary election. Sen. Dave Syverson from Rockford, with more than 20 years in office, defeated Sen. Christine Johnson from Shabbona and ultimately was returned to office. On the congressional side, in District 16, longtime U.S. Rep. Donald Manzullo and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger opposed each other in the Republican primary with Kinzinger winning. “There is a nation-wide push among states to create independent maps as a way to prevent gerrymandering,” Pritchard said. “Even President Obama advocated for such a system before the Illinois General Assembly earlier this year.” Together, Pritchard and Sosnowski represent all of Boone County. The Boone County Board at its Aug. 17 meeting voted 11-0 to support placing the redistricting referendum on the general election ballot.

Appreciation from columnist to readers, to another columnist By

KELLY SIMMONS Columnist

before my column came out, our pastor’s message was on the word “integrity,” and I told him we must have been reading each other’s minds, and then when you basically used the same idea in your column, I was blown away.” My response was of course that great minds think alike. It delights me that a woman who is 88 contacts me via email. Then to learn that she is independent, been in a wheelchair her entire adult life

REAL ESTATE

and still submits a regular column to her local paper is inspiring. Helen then sent me via snail mail a copy of the story of her polio. It was written so long ago, she said, that it was done on her antique typewriter. Seeing typed pages warmed my heart. Reading the other stuff she sent intrigued me too. An interesting character, this Helen Perrine. She commented on my marrying a Simmons and stated that she is related to the Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons. “His father and I were first cousins or his grandfather and my mother were siblings.” Helen also confided that she wrote a book, only 20 copies, for her family to outline their life history and get it all documented.

They are lucky to have it. Paper-clipped to one of the columns she snail-mailed me was a Christmas card from 2015. The scene was a beautiful winter landscape, a horse-drawn sleigh on the snowy path through the woods to the church. It was lovely. and then I noticed it was hers. Helen painted it, “in her 88th year.” Again, this lady is a force to behold. She had written to me originally when I wrote about holding on to one word to be the anchor for your upcoming year. That was what her pastor had talked about in his “integrity” message and what she had written about in a way that same time. Helen saw a piece on TV about a guy who makes jewelry with one word embossed on it that could

be the word to define your future. She wondered what Einstein would have selected and if Martin Luther King would have selected Dream. She wrote to me that her word would be Imagination. I love it. Thank you, Helen, for being a shining example that life is up to us to make it wonderful and full. I believe I will still write when I am 88, and hopefully someone will still find me interesting then. For now, signing off to Helen and all readers, with deep appreciation. Cheers!
