A Dozen Years of Farmer’s Markets By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
WOODSTOCK — The Woodstock Farmer’s Market is bursting with every color in nature on Saturday, September 5. Booths surround the Square, filled with fruits, vegetables, flowers and greenery, meats and sausages, and kettle corn. Jan and Len Sosinski have been a part of this market for 12 years now. Their land spans acres in both McHenry and Lake Counties. They grow sweet corn, rhubarb, raspberries, gooseberries, currants, mulberries, beans, popcorn, pumpkins and more. “It’s been a hard year with the weather. A lot of our stuff is late this year,” Jan tells me. “We don’t have any greenhouses so we are totally dependent on the weather. We had to put a lot of our crops in late.” They still have a variety of fruits and vegetables in their booth. They also have an extensive display of jam, jellies and vinegars. Jan says, “I wanted to come to the market earlier and I didn’t have anything else. I got a grant through the Woodstock Farmer’s Market and my husband and I took advantage of it. We took the course [Food Preparation License], took the test and passed it. I was able to get the licensing. I make all the jams and jellies.” One of them is ’Carrot Cake Jam’. “I always tell people to get a graham cracker, spread a little jam on it and instant dessert.”

Jan and Len are assisted at their booth by their daughter, Chris. “She’s a big help to me when we set up,” Jan says. Chris has organized a portion of the booth to display her hand-crafted macramé jewelry.

CRYSTAL LAKE — The clouds are drifting and the sun is playing hideand-seek over the lake as art lovers wander through the grounds of the
Dole Mansion on Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6. People are moving in and out of the artists’ booths that are covering the lawn of the mansion. The 1st Annual Art Fair at the Dole is underway.
“This mission focused fund-raising event will truly reflect what the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park is all about. You will be wowed by the simple, intimate, elegant and inspiring experience,” says Executive Director Siobhan Cottone.

“We are excited about our first art fair. It is a fundraiser for the Lakeside Legacy Foundation to preserve the Dole Mansion.” “This event showcases all mediums of art – visual arts, performance arts, culinary arts. That’s what Lakeside is all about. We are thrilled to have over 50 fine artists participating. They were all juried in. We already have a lot of response from artists who want to come back next year.” The fair features art mediums spanning a wide range. The artists are displaying digital art, paintings, photography, wood, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, furniture, metal work, glass and leather/fiber arts. “We also have a market inside,” Cottone tells me, “with wine, cheese and chocolate. We hope next year to have more vendors.” Continuing through the Dole Mansion, one comes to the elegant Listening Room where musicians are skilled in performance arts. “The Listening Room is only 2 ½ years old. It’s one of the best music rooms within 50 miles,” says Roger Reupert, Program Manager. Dedicated on September 13, 2012, the Listening Room was made possible by the generosity of a special group of individuals from Beach Cite, Inc. “The chairs, sound system and [initial] monetary donation came from Orange Beach, Alabama,” Reupert continues.

McHenry native patrolling Middle East waters with U.S. Navy By LT Philip Fortnam, Navy Office of Community Outreach
MANAMA, Bahrain — A 1997 Marian Central Catholic High School graduate and McHenry, Illinois native is serving overseas aboard the U.S. Navy Coastal Patrol Ship USS Whirlwind (PC-11), living and working at a Navy base in Manama, Bahrain. Lt. Cmdr. Bethany Busch is the commanding officer of the Bahrain-based ship. Bahrain is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Arabian Gulf. As the commanding officer of the Whirlwind she is responsible for operations, safety, and managment of a crew of 30 sailors. “For a junior officer, patrol craft are great and offer the chance for early command,” said Busch. “I’ve never met harder working sailors than those on the Whirlwind.” The Whirlwind was commissioned in 1994 and is one of the Navy’s 13 Cyclone-class ships designed for coastal patrol and interdiction surveillance. These ships provide the U.S. Navy with a fast, reliable platform that can respond to crises in a shallow water environment.

McHenry County College moves toward vehicle sustainability By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
CRYSTAL LAKE — With electric vehicles becoming more and more prevalent, McHenry County College has added electric charging stations to two of its locations. The stations, which are presently free, are just the beginning of the college’s sustainability plans. The first station is at the Shah Center, near Centegra Hospital off Route 31 in McHenry. The main campus, located at 8900 US Highway 14 in Crystal Lake, houses the other two charging stations, both of which are located in parking lot B, the lot nearest to the Luecht Conference Center. Through the end of the standard 2015-2016 course sessions, the use of these stations will be free of charge and open to the general public constantly. The charging stations are run off of the solar array, which was just completed by the school in December of 2014. The array is comprised of 336 panels and was funded by a grant the school was awarded by the state’s Green Economy Network. Whether or not the charging stations will remain free in the future will be dependent upon statistics of the use for the first year. It is possible the school will charge a fee for cars utilizing the chargers, the structure of which is to

be determined should the need arise. Ultimately the school is looking to reduce their use of nonrenewable energy to promote a longer lasting educational environment. The Earth Science and Energy Resources courses at the school had been working with four of the panels used in the solar array prior to its construction in their coursework. The college has also recently added offerings, in conjunction with Midwest Renewable Energy, for noncredit courses pertaining to solar power use. By adding these courses, the school has continued to expand their career path options for continuing education attendees. The charging stations provided by MCC make up nearly 1/4 of the stations throughout McHenry County. A total of eight additional charging stations are equipped at various other locations in the area. Drivers utilizing electric vehicles can find the locations of said stations via “Plugshare” which has a downloadable application, or the company’s website. Users input their exact location or zip code and are shown all stations in the area. The stations are then divided further into residential, public, high-power, and in-use groups so users have the most up to date information about availability.
mission.” The Whirlwind is 179 feet long, 25 feet wide and is powered by four diesel engines and can reach speeds of more than 40 mph. Its armament is made up of 8 total machine guns and two grenade launchers: two MK 38 25mm machine guns, four .50 caliber machine guns, two M-60 machine guns and two MK 19 40mm automatic
grenade launchers. With approximately four officers and 25 enlisted comprising the ship’s company, jobs are highly varied which keeps the ship mission ready — this includes everything from washing dishes and preparing meals to handling weaponry and maintaining the propulsion system. As a member of the crew,
Busch and other Whirlwind Sailors know they are part of a forward-deployed naval forces team that is heavily relied upon to help protect and defend America on the world’s oceans. “Every CO in the Navy wants to be deployed, it is the most coveted position in the Navy to be doing the mission every day,” said Busch. In addition to the Whirlwind, another seven Cyclone-class coastal patrol ships and two Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship are forward deployed in Bahrain. The world is increasingly complex and crewmembers aboard the Whirlwind, as well as the other forward-deployed naval vessels in Bahrain, assist with assuring international sea lines between the Middle East and Europe remain open and help protect against possible maritime threats. As a Sailor with numerous responsibilities, deployed halfway around the world away from friends and family back home, Busch said she is learning about herself as a leader, Sailor and a person. “I appreciate the diversity of people and what each person brings to the table,” said Busch. “The support of family and friends back home is so meaningful for everyone serving in the Persian Gulf.”

World-class violin maker in Marengo By Anne Eickstadt Correspondent
MARENGO — Martin Brunkalla is sitting behind a display of fine stringed instruments as I approach his booth in Woodstock. “This is something I did part-time since high school. I have been doing it full-time since 2000,” Brunkalla says. Before that, he designed automated manufacturing systems. “The work was sent overseas.” Brunkalla is now a highly trained ‘luthier’, a person who makes and repairs stringed instruments. ‘Luthier’ is based on the word ‘lute’, an ancient stringed instrument. Brunkalla grew up “building stuff” with his father and broth-
ers. He started with “models of planes, trains, automobiles, rockets and boats. At age 12, he and a few brothers were the first kids on the block to achieve manned flight. Based on principles of building a flying model as taught by his father, Martin and the boys built a glider with a wingspan of 22 feet. After a short but spectacular flight, his parents encouraged activities that didn’t involve leaving the ground. The 9 year old test pilot was not seriously injured.” Upon high school graduation, he worked as a machinist in his father’s job shop and “learned a great deal about how things worked and how they were designed and manufactured.”
These skills brought him many job opportunities. These led to him becoming “Director of Engineering for a firm specializing in custom manufacturing systems.” Throughout the years, Brunkalla maintained an interest in stringed instruments of all types. He learned how to repair and customize them. Determined to learn to create a better instrument, Brunkalla studied everything he could find on the subject. He then found that Manfred Reinl, third generation master violin maker, lived a short distance away. Brunkalla “had the tremendous privilege and good fortune of ‘inheriting’ a good portion of the accumulated knowledge
and wisdom” of the late Reinl. “I started as a violin maker,” Brunkalla tells me. “I build from scratch. I start with a log, dry it and I build it. I use a wide variety of woods. I try to do a lot with tonewoods”. ‘Tonewoods’ is a term that generally refers to woods believed to possess tonal properties. They are used in the construction of stringed instruments. The sonic properties of wood vary dramatically between species, weight and density. Each piece of wood is unique. In general, heavier woods hold notes well and have a bright and articulate sound, which are all good attributes for a instrument. Light weight woods may sound indistinct or muddy. Medium weight woods fall in the middle and are the usual preference. Walnut, maple, spruce and
cherry among others are good tonewoods. One of the more exotic and unusual woods Brunkalla has worked with is ancient kauri. This wood “was dug out of a peat bog in New Zealand. It has been carbon dated to 50,000 B.C. I made mandolins, violins and a few guitars” from ancient kauri. Brunkalla often creates instruments for people who have been referred to him by happy customers. His instruments are played by musicians such as Grammy Award winning members of Nickel Creek and the Queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent. You can find more about Brunkalla instruments online at www.brunkalla.com. Or visit his Facebook page at Martin Brunkalla

Continued from page 1 Club Road, Woodstock, IL, 60098. This larger space will be open on Saturdays from 9 am until 1 pm. Many of the vendors at the Farmer’s Market offer a CSA option. Community Supported Agriculture allows customers to buy ‘shares’ or ‘subscriptions’ to receive an agreed upon amount of fresh produce, meats or eggs on a regular basis.
But whether you purchase a share or simply come to the Farmer’s Market and buy whatever appeals to you, the Farmer’s Market is an excellent opportunity to find farm-fresh foods, try different types of vegetables and actually meet the people who grow the food and raise the animals. The farmers get to meet the people they help feed and build relationships with
them, learn their preferences and give them cooking tips. The food doesn’t get any fresher than when it comes straight from the farm. More information on the Woodstock Farmer’s Market can be found online at www. woodstockfarmersmarket.com Sosinski Produce can be located on their Facebook page.

Columnist provides update of the 30 days of clean eating adventure
O
ur 30-day clean eating adventure is over. I feel amazingly proud. To go thirty days without a cookie is a feat. I almost made it. If you follow me on Facebook, you know I had a moment of temptation. My firstborn son was home for a week. I made cakes and cookies to celebrate his college graduation. (Yay for my Aerospace Engineer boy!) I didn’t eat any sweets the day of his party. The leftovers on the counter the next morning called out to me. “Hey, long lost friend, what’s up? Why are you not eating cake for breakfast? Why are you not eating cookies every hour on the hour? We miss you. We are here to please you.” Oh my. I wanted cake. I wanted a cookie. No one was around. I had been doing great on this eating adventure and had not really wanted any sweets. It hadn’t been a battle of wills or me wrestling with temptation. It had been going quite easily. But this morning, it felt wrong to leave those home baked treats beckoning me and me ignoring them. I couldn’t keep being rude. So....... I grabbed a very small fork (because that is less incriminating) and took a tiny bite of Cake 1. Much to surprise, it did not taste good at all. I took a tiny bite of Cake 2. Didn’t do anything for me. I ate a piece of cookie. It was okay but nothing like the scrumptious treat I remembered. It was no big deal. I didn’t feel the desire for more. I closed the lids and pinched myself. Those treats could sit on the counter and I no longer felt like I was missing out. I think the earth shifted on its axis at that moment. These past 30 days, we focused on healthy foods, smaller portions, eating slowly, drinking more water. You know, common sense. Along with that, we have used the supplements of a company I have fallen in love with (editors won’t let me name
Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST
names in print, but the company has been around 35 years, starts with an A, and has the word bonne in it.) I’ve lost six pounds and Prince Charming lost sixteen. We’re going to keep on with the protein shakes (they’re yummy and keep me feeling full) and we’re trying out other products too. It has been such a hit for me that I joined this company as a consultant so I can get the products cheaper. (I will hook you up. Message me.) Thirty days went fast and was not at all full of suffering. I look forward to desserts of melon instead of cake and a banana as a snack instead of a cookie. For you, that may be no big deal. For me, a crazy wonderful shift. To have my skirts not feel tight feels great. My belly jiggle is noticeably less. People are telling me how good I look and even used the word from my youth “skinny.” My energy stays level all day, no slumps. My hot flashes are pretty much gone. All from watching my diet and using some protein powder. It’s a modern miracle. Did I add more exercise during these 30 days? Nope. Did I feel hungry? Nope. Did I crave sugar? No. Did I eat out at restaurants? Yes (Bonus: much cheaper tab when you don’t drink alcohol.) Did I go to social functions? Yes. Was it a “success”? Absolutely. I am wowed. Everything in life is an experiment, and this turned out so well, we’ll keep at it. Who knows what the future holds! (Kelly Epperson Simmons likes not having a belly roll. Teach your children about school bus safety MCHENRY COUNTY — School bus transportation is safe; however, according to the National Coalition for School Bus Safety, 17,000 children are injured annually in school bus-related traffic accidents nationwide. Nearly one-fourth of these accidents occurred while children were boarding or exiting the school bus. Wisconsin law is clear in that as a driver, if you approach a legally marked bus with flashing red warning lights, you must: Stop at least 20 feet from the bus. This applies both to vehicles approaching from the rear and from opposing lanes. All lanes of traffic must stop for the school bus except in opposing lanes if the highway is divided with a center median. No vehicle may proceed until the bus resumes motion and turns off its flashing red warning lights. The stop arm on the bus is an added communication device for other drivers, but lack of the extended arm is not a reason to pass a bus whose red lights are still flashing. For parents of students riding a school bus, it is important to have your children adhere to the following guidelines. These guidelines will help ensure a safe trip between home and school. At the bus stop: Always walk to the bus stop. Never run. Walk facing traffic. Have your child wait in a safe area away from traffic and the road. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals for your child to board. Watch for red flashing lights and the stop sign to be extended, and cross only when all traffic has stopped. Look left, right, and left again before crossing. Exiting the bus: When being dropped off, have your child take 10 giant steps away from the bus, remember that the bus driver can see your child better when they move away from the bus. Have your child always use the handrail when entering or exiting the bus and have them always remain seated until the bus stops. If you leave something on the bus, never return to the bus to get it. The bus driver may not see you come back, and they may begin moving the bus. Also, if you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver before you attempt to pick it up so they will know where you are. Be aware of traffic on the roadway. Drivers are required to stop for all legal school buses; however, not all do. Have your child watch carefully before crossing the roadway. Remember that in rural areas the speed limit is higher which makes it more difficult for a driver to stop quickly.
