It’s Great…to be Square! By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT
S
quare dancing is a uniquely American tradition with its roots in both English Morris dancing and European social dances such as quadrilles and cotillions. It has also been the official national folk dance of the United States since 1982 when Ronald Reagan signed an Act of Congress. In McHenry County, the Woodstock Squares and the McHenry B’n’B Square Dance clubs cohosted a free Intro to Square Dance party on the evening of Thursday, September 7. Members of both clubs came out to be ‘Angels’, providing new visitors with partners and assisting them in learning the calls and steps. First time dancer Boni Anderson says, “I am here to try. It is a fun experience.” Lottie Buckbee is calling the steps tonight, alternating the job with caller Bob Asp. “Square dancing is a wonderful sport,” she tells me. “There is no other exercise or activity that is as much fun. You can exercise and dance at the same time. It’s also an exercise for the mind. There is no need to have ever danced before. Anyone who can walk can square dance.” Proof that square dancing is exercise for the mind is the fact that a number of colleges around the country teach a ‘Square Dance as Math’ course. “Square dancing is fitness for the mind and body,” says Christine Steffy of the Woodstock Squares. “You are listening to the caller and you have to respond correctly. You are walking to the music. You can easily do 5000 steps a night.” “People wear a wide variety of clothes,” she continues. “You want to be comfortable when you learn. You meet all kinds of people. You can dance as much as you want, or not.”
“It’s aerobic,” Marge Machacek of the McHenry B’n’Bs says. “You can dance across the United States. You can dance across the world. All the calls are in English no matter what the country. You just have to get used to the accent. Two years ago, we had a caller from Japan at the national conference. Last year, he came back with 20 people from Japan.” Donna Carpenter, who has been inducted into the Square Dance Hall of Fame, says, “It’s a really nice activity. I’ve been doing it for 40 years. It’s a pleasant social evening. It almost becomes a way of life. It is particularly nice for singles to meet others in a nonthreatening environment.” “We welcome singles and couples of all ages,” Buckbee tells me. “We like all ages from age 10 and up,” Barb Zamastil adds. “Kids love it. One family started dancing last year and they dance a lot. Lessons are every Thursday. No partner needed. Club members come out to dance with learning dancers.” The McHenry B’n’Bs [Bachelors and Bachelorettes] started out as a singles club,” Steffy says. The McHenry club of B’n’B Square Dancing is the local branch of an international square dance organization. Both clubs dance at the McHenry Township Building B, Recreation/Senior Center at 3519 N. Richmond Road, Johnsburg, IL 60051. Lessons are on Thursday evenings. The club dances are on Fridays with the clubs alternating weeks. Wahoo! It’s the Fall Fun Festival By Anne Eickstadt,

School is back in session. Days are getting shorter and cooler weather is well on its way. There are still a lot of seasonal activities we can be enjoying before we pull out the sleds and skis. A popular place to visit at this time of year is Donley’s Wild West Town in Union during their Fall Fun Festival. The grounds are decorated with shocks of corn and photo opportunities that are set up exclusively for this event. Bales of hay are set out for decoration, for sitting on and for kids to clamber over. The cowboy shows continue entertain us at 12:00, 2:00 and 4:30, with one of the shows changing to become a special Halloween presentation with cowboy zombies or other such monsters. Pumpkin painting tables are popular with children under 12 competing for the prize – a return pass for next year. The top three eligible pumpkins, as chosen daily by select judges, will win this coveted prize. The judging is at the end of the day so winners will be notified by mail. You can try your skill at archery, lassos, slingshots, popguns and, for the adults, tomahawk throwing. The Kiddie Pedal Cars, Carousel and Canoes are popular with the children. Some kids make a beeline for the Pony Rides. Kids and adults alike can thrill to the Runaway Mine Cars roller coaster. The ¾ scale model C. P. Huntington train offers two different experiences during the Fall Fun Festival. At some trips, the train will travel down to the Pumpkin Patch where you can trade the beads you received when you entered the Wild West Town for a pumpkin that you can take home with you. At other scheduled times, the train will enter the Spooky Tunnel with its special effects, skeletons, spider webs and whatever other spooky things have made their home in the gloom of the cavern. Face Painting and karaoke are always fun choices. The Ice Cream Parlor and Fudge Shop can satisfy your munchies. Souvenirs

are easily found in the toy store and gift shops. You can also dress up in Western or Victorian outfits and have your photo taken as a remembrance of your exciting day. If you want to play a trick on someone, you can have a friend or loved one arrested and thrown into an authentic strap-iron jail cell. Kids of all ages thoroughly enjoy the Wild West Town’s Gold Mine. Panning for gold, even gold pyrite or Fool’s Gold, is very nearly addictive. Gold fever can strike without warning and most everyone wants to try to fill their gold bag. The Fall Fun Festival is an annual favorite and families return year after year to enjoy the seasonal event. You might even spot a celebrity or two mingling with the visitors. Donley’s Wild West Town is designed for families with children under 12. It has plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained throughout the day. It is open on weekends

Going for a Stroll
By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT
The McHenry County Farm Stroll is back. For one day only, Sunday, September 25, a dozen unique farms are welcoming visitors to stroll around, take a tour or just see what they grow and sell. “Farm Stroll is a wonderful opportunity to get out with family and friends, or on your own, and see actual working farms,” says Brenda Dahlfors, of the McHenry County Extension, Master Gardener Coordinator. “The kids can see that fruits and vegetables don’t really come from the store. And how many adults have been on a working dairy farm?” she continues. “I heard there is a newborn baby alpaca at the alpaca farm.” “Many of the stops will also have demonstrations, hay rack rides and things to touch, taste, and smell.” Patyk’s Farm Market and Greenhouse in Richmond grows fruit, vegetables, annuals, perennials, herbs, goats, cows, turkeys and chickens. They also make milk soap. Von Bergen’s Country Market in Hebron covers 1200 acres. They raise 20 varieties of squash and pumpkins, sweet corn, tomatoes, muskmelon, peppers, and a variety of fresh vegetables. They also offer local pies, breads, jellies, pickles and more. Harvard Eggs, Feed and Produce has eggs, turkeys, poultry, meat, produce, hay, honey and beeswax as well as yarn from their sheep and llamas. You can learn about beekeeping, wool-spinning and weaving while you visit. They are an excellent source for beekeeping items. Cashmore’s Produce and Ponics in Harvard uses vertical hydroponics to grow their plants as well as traditional organic methods. They offer organic produce, lettuces and kale and more. Cripple Creek Ranch is a horse training and boarding farm. They give riding lessons, train horses and do equine rehab. AlsPACAs of Dutch Mill Farm in Harvard will let you get up close and personal with their alpacas if you wish to feed the animals. Spinners and weavers will be on site. Alpaca fibers in several colors and finished goods will be available. RowSchell Ridge Vineyard in Marengo grows more than 1000 vines. They will demonstrate how wine grapes are grown and how wine is made in northern Illinois. Cody’s Farm & Orchard is a family business offering seasonal vegetables, apple

Fantasy – family style It’s the trending Sunday sensation more popular than selfies in restaurants or commercials during the Super Bowl. In a word, it’s fantasy football. According to the New York Post, via the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker, roughly a quarter of the U.S. population played fantasy football last season. Millions of those aficionados were women. That includes two at my house – my daughter and me. (Who doesn’t like a good fantasy?) Every. One. Is. Doing. It. (You, me, all of us!) We’re drafting a team. Conducting scientific football research. Choosing a lineup. Paying attention to the flex, and I’m not referring to football muscles. We’re living the fantasy. We tune in on Sunday (and Thursday and Monday) and hope to high heaven we can score enough points this week to beat our daughter’s team, which she’s aptly named “The Gurley Squad” for obvious reasons. At least that’s how it goes at my house. We don’t call them Sunday fun-days for nothing. My family is fairly low-key about the game. Many fantasy fanatics win and lose big bucks each week through online fantasy sites, which are games of skill and technically not gambling or illegal. I can assure you nothing illegal is

going on at my house. We’re just competing for the family trophy. That, and bragging rights. While I’m relatively new to the adventure, the idea of fantasy football was conceived in 1962, with the first draft occurring in 1963 in Oakland, California. It was a small enterprise back then. Because of the intricacies of scoring by hand in the pre-smart phone era, the game grew gradually over the next few decades until the immediacy of Internet magic took hold. Fantasy football websites and apps have brought the game to the masses – including non-football types like me. This is my second year at the game, so I’m pretty much a pro. No matter that I came in last place last season. I was a rookie, and everyone knows you can’t expect too much during a rookie year. (My name’s Jill, not Ezekiel.) During the off-season, I acquired a vast amount of knowledge about running backs – full

write this to you before I go to France and you will read while I am there. This trip has been planned for a long time. We are taking off the entire month of September to be on holiday in the south of France. The Europeans take off the month of August. Our schedules worked better for the fall. When we first announced our journey, people exclaimed with delight and enthusiasm. But far more shook their heads and asked, “Aren’t you afraid?” No, we’re not. France tourism has obviously declined due to the terror attacks that have occurred there this past year or so. One MILLION fewer people have visited France in the first six months of 2016 than in years past. Many people, at least one million, are indeed afraid. I liken it to New York City. That city was attacked and many people were killed. It was horrendous and defies comprehension. Does that mean it is not safe to go to New York? The sad truth is that anything could happen anywhere at any time. I could be at an event in Chicago and tragedy could strike. With any trip, in these days since 9/11 and the attacks across the world, one must be more aware and extra cautious. But to stay home simply because of a “what if,” does not make sense. Travel brings me joy. This trip with my Prince has been a joy to anticipate and I’m sure will be a delight every day. We do not have plans to be in Paris, but not because of fear of attacks. My husband is not a big city guy. We will spend a leisurely month exploring the south, mainly Provence, and enjoying a slower pace of life. I do find it bittersweet that the state of the world is one of such mixed emotion. For all those who have a bit of good-natured envy that we are off to France for a month, there are just

as many who shrink back in fear and think we’re foolish. Some people have a fear of flying and that keeps them from getting on a plane. Now the fear of terror attacks keeps people from traveling. That is sad. I choose to focus on the good. I lived in France for a year a decade ago. At that time, there were riots and burning of cars and buildings in Paris and Toulouse, where I lived. It was much exaggerated in the media. My friends were told it was not safe to travel to France and they are so glad they trusted their intuition and came any way. The trip of a lifetime could have been spoiled by fear. The only evidence of any turmoil at that time was one instance of armed guards at the airport and the sniffing dogs. I’m okay with that. When things are a bit shaky, the security steps up a notch. My hubby and I are not foolish and do not go looking for trouble. It is my wish in these last days before we depart that any one who speaks of our trip does so with a smile and a glimmer of “Oh, I wish I was off to France too!” There will always be Chicken Littles and those who think the sky is falling. I see the sky as blue and beautiful. I plan to drink wine, eat fine food, and stroll the Cours Mirabeau with my beau. I wish myself a bon voyage and I will tell you all about it when I return. Au revoir! Kelly Epperson Simmons can be reached at PO Box 2324, Loves Park, IL 61131, or info@kellyepperson.com.
and half; they run the ball. And receivers – the wide kind; they catch the ball. And tight ends, who stand on the end and can both block bodies and catch the ball. There’s also the quarterback, but we all know what he does. A successful fantasy lineup requires expertise in fine-tuned research, extensive knowledge about player capabilities, insight into the sport and an awareness of sudden and unexpected changes to the game (Gronk). It all boils down to grilling my husband and three boys who, unlike me, have all the qualities listed above. I figure if I ask them lots of questions, their pigskin know-how will transfer over to me via famil-
ial osmosis. So far it’s working. They’re willing to provide me with insider insight as long as I make them nachos on game day. I figure it’s a fair trade. (Or maybe that’s a waiver?) Besides, I won during week one! Not only that, I had the highest scoring team in my league, and I didn’t even play Cam Newton a blunder, perhaps, but Denver’s defense spooked me. Sorry, Cam! It’s not often you can brag about beating your daughter at football, but this week, I’ve got the rights. It’s a proud parenting moment. If my winning ways continue, I could take the trophy home this year.
But, I best not count my touchdowns before the two-minute warning. I’m up against my husband this week and it’s likely to be a tough match. He’s got Andrew Luck and a possible Gronk to my Cam and Beckam Jr. Either way, we’re both winners. Because you know what they say… The family that plays (and eats nachos) together stays together.
