ormally, I like to take my holidays one at a time. I don’t want to hear about Halloween before Labor Day or Christmas before Halloween. However, if you want to participate in this Christmas event, you have to meet the October 15 deadline. So, Merry Christmas, everyone! In September. National Wreaths Across America Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in December. This year, that date falls on December 12. This event began several years ago, in 1992, when “a Christmas tree farmer in Maine found that he had a surplus of wreaths – decided to place them at Arlington National Cemetery in the oldest section so none of the veterans would be forgotten.” The Christmas tree farmer is Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine. “With the help of Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, arrangements were made for the wreaths to be placed at
Arlington in one of the oldest sections of the cemetery, a section which had been receiving fewer visitors with each passing year.” With plans underway, “James Prout, owner of local trucking company, Blue Bird Ranch, Inc., generously provided transportation all the way to Virginia. Volunteers from the local American Legion and VFW Posts gathered with members of the community to decorate each wreath with hand-tied bows. Members of the Maine State Society of Washington D.C. helped to organize the wreath-laying, which included a special ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” This ceremony continued quietly for several years. In 2005, a photo of the wreaths adorning the snowcovered gravestones hit the internet. “Thousands of requests poured in from all over the country from people wanting to help with Arlington, to emulate the Arlington project at their National and State cemeteries or to simply share their stories and thank Morrill Worcester for honoring their
nation’s heroes.” “Unable to donate thousands of wreaths to each state, Worcester began sending seven wreaths to every state, one for each branch of the military and for POW/MIAs. In 2006, with the help of the Civil Air Patrol and other civic organizations, simultaneous wreath laying ceremonies were held at over 150 locations around the country. The Patriot Guard Riders volunteered as escort for the wreaths going to Arlington. This began the annual ‘Veterans Honor Parade’ that travels the east coast in early December.” “In 2014, Wreaths Across America and our national network of volunteers laid over 700,000 memorial wreaths at 1000 locations in the United States and beyond. We were able to include ceremonies at the Pearl Harbor Memorial as well as Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the sites of the September 11 tragedies. We accomplished this with help from 2047 fundraising groups, corporate contributions, and donations of trucking, shipping and thousands of helping hands. Our goal of covering
Arlington National Cemetery was accomplished in 2014 with the placement of 226,525 wreaths.” “This year, the VFW Post 4600 Ladies Auxiliary, McHenry, IL, goal is to place wreaths at the following locations: St. John the Baptist Church Cemetary, The Woodland Cemetery and St. Mary of the Assumption Church Cemetery.” Each wreath costs $15.00. Sponsorship levels are: Individual = 1 wreath for $15.00; Family = 4 wreaths for $60.00; Small Business = 10 wreaths for $150.00 or Corporate = 100 wreaths for $1500.00. To donate wreaths for these McHenry County locations, please make out checks to : Wreaths Across America – a non-profit organization – and mail to: Cinde Prusko, 1807 Grandview Drive, Johnsburg, IL, 60051. ‘Rusty Gold’ Collector Cars to be auctioned Oct. 2 and 3 By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
They might not appear impressive to the general public but collectors and rehabbers will positively jump for joy at the opportunity to buy the autos in the “Rusty Gold” Auction. Scheduled for the first weekend in October, the “Rusty Gold” Auction features over 600 vehicles from the collection of Lew Lazarus. Lazarus is the general manager of Collector Cars, Ltd. It is a family owned business that has been in the auto business
for 102 years. Collector Cars, Ltd. will continue to thrive for many years. However, they are anticipating the arrival of a new shipment of cars and have run out of room to put them! Therefore, they are clearing up space in their lots by auctioning off their lifetime collection of classic cars. Starting in 1913, Lew’s father operated a GM dealership. He ran it until he died 60 years later. The family continued with dealerships in Forreston and Oregon, Illinois. Owning the dealerships gave the Laza-
rus family many opportunities to collect cars from off the lot and from trade-ins. Lew, himself, has been featured in many articles over the years. The “Rusty Gold” Auction will include a ’25 Flint, a ’41 Packard coupe with dual side mounts, a ’41 Packard limo Le Baron body – 1 of only 7 ever manufactured, a ’49 Cadillac convertible and a Henney World War II military ambulance. In an unprecedented event, 2 other Henneys will also be sold

McHenry County Starbucks to serve alcohol in three locations
Deputy Maness passes less than one year after shooting By Samantha Fetzner Reporter
MCHENRY COUNTY — Deputy Dwight Maness, one of the McHenry County responding officers involved in the October 2014 shooting in Holidays Hills, passed away on September 14. Maness, who was recovering from gunshot wounds inflicted during that horrific event, died as a result of blood clots in his lungs. Whether or not those clots were a result of his shooting injuries is yet to be determined. Maness and partner Khalia Satkiewicz were both wounded in the event. Maness and Satkiewicz, along with Eric Luna, were responding to a well being call at Scott Peters’ home in Holiday Hills when Peters opened fire on the officers. Peters, using an automatic weapon, shot both Maness and Satkiewicz in the legs. Maness also suffered a second gunshot injury to his back. He had been attempting to rehabilitate and recovery from the injuries he sustained at the time of his death. His partner, Satkiewicz is also recovering. The third officer, Luna, was not

MCHENRY COUNTY — After coffee franchise Starbucks announced their plans to seek out approval for a menu including beer and wine at a location in Algonquin during August, they have moved forward with three separate approvals. The Starbucks stores in Algonquin at 790 S. Randall Road, in Lake in the Hills 343 Randall Road, and Crystal Lake’s location at 6000 Northwest Highway Unit 13J. The franchise’s alcoholic offering will go live as early as late October in what’s being called Starbucks’ “evenings menu” at the Algonquin location. The Lake in the Hills Village Board unanimously approved the company’s request with a 5 - 0 vote in mid September. Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake will likely roll out their additional menu later in the year.
injured. Maness’s assailant, Peters, was convicted on attempted murder charges in April. He was sentenced to 135 years in prison by a McHenry County jury in June. If Maness’s death is found to be a result of the injuries sustained during the shooting, Peters could be facing murder charges. His initial trial lasted only 3 days before a guilty verdict was delivered. It is unclear at this time how long the determination will take, or whether Peters will be brought back to court. Funeral arrangements for Deputy Maness are being held Saturday, September 19th. The public will be welcome between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. His fellow policemen and women will be walking through after the public viewing. All events will take place at Woodstock North High School, followed by a funeral procession to Maness’s final resting place. Any questions regarding the services should be directed to the McHenry County Sheriffs Office. We thank Dwight Maness for his service and his bravery in the line of duty.

MCHENRY COUNTY — After the Zoning Board of Appeals voted majority in favor of Fraternite’s petition request in late July, The McHenry County Board itself was quick to reject the expansion request. Final vote was 20-3 in favor of rejecting the organization’s expansion request. The Appeals board vote would have been sufficient had it been a super majority, however they had a 4-3 vote in favor of the petition, forcing a Board vote situation. The rejection falls in line with Coral Township officials and residents who have actively spoke against additional space for the organization. The Fraternite’s request included requests that had previously been made, approved,

by the Board prior to the vote. Extra security measures will be put in place to ensure safe consumption on the premises including an ID system, an ‘inhouse’ only policy for alcohol, and clear glasses for guests to use during their visit. None of the stores have expressed a desire or need to expand with the additional menu. By operating in the same space, stores will have no downtime as they transition into offering the “evenings menu”. Starbucks is in the process of meticulously selecting what other areas will be tested for this offering. The only location in the area currently utilizing the “evenings menu” is in Schaumburg at the Streets of Woodfield Mall. That particular location was one of the first in the Chicagoland area to utilize this menu in 2012. Their reach with the additional choices has been successful.

As with the approval process in the other two approved locations, staff members from the Lake in the Hills store were on site during the Board’s meeting to field a series of questions. The board inquired as to what the company, and more specifically store, policy would be to ensure safe alcohol consumption, how serving minors would be avoided, and what effect the additional menu would have on the logistics of the location itself. Beer and wine are not the only pieces of the “evenings menu” being rolled out in this proposal. Beyond alcohol, these locations will also serve dinner-style food and hot appetizers. These will be in addition to the standard menu offerings. Loyal customers should not be concerned; all the traditional Starbucks favorites remain in tact. Staff for the stores were quick to thwart concerns posed

and unfulfilled over the course of 10 years. This expansion proposition called for variances to allow an on site winery and brewery, private school, boarding space and a commercial kitchen. A major sticking point with neighbors and fellow community members was the exclusivity of the project. All of the on-site buildings in their location at 10002 Harmony Hills Road in rural Marengo are not open to the public. The rejection, accompanied by a petition with over 800 signatures from community members in Coral Township sighting unreasonable work and noise hours, was quick in comparison to the appeals process. The lack of neighboring support played a large role in the overall decision. None of the Board members spoke in favor of the Fraternite’s request, but several
acknowledged the group’s mission and efforts as a whole to be overwhelmingly positive. The group is often cited for their assistance with those in poverty. Had the Fraternite’s operation been located elsewhere, it is quite likely it may have been approved. The requests they were making were largely commercial in nature, and the location is very rural. Not one opposing person commented negatively on the group’s beliefs or general intent. The members of the Fraternite on site during the vote were visibly angry, some of them verbally accusing members of discriminating against their religion. In the end, the vote simply came down to the logistics of the area in comparison to the proposal of the Fraternite, and the Board did not feel the two aligned.
Letter to the Editor I couldn’t resist writing in regard to your excellent article in the Sept 8 issue of the BDR titled “Woodstock Square Park holds BarkA-Paw-Looza 2015,” held to support Rescued Dogs Resource Center. While world affairs become more chaotic by the day, after millennia of animal abuse and cruelty, companion animals are getting more attention than ever before. The BDR’s story describes a great event and lists resources where people can acquire a pets instead of buying from mass producing kennels that sell via Internet or pet shops. Mass produced rarely means quality. The main pitfalls of breeding in large numbers are health issues and lack of socialization. People may get a shy, spooky animal often with bad temperament. Health issues can cost the new owners thousands, ending in euthanasia despite extensive treatment.
Respectable breeders breed in small numbers and do not sell via Internet or pet shops. Most respectable breeders also prove the quality of their animals in the show ring. Quality means breeding only individuals with a healthy ancestry with good temperament. There is one more category that falls in between mass producers and respectable breeders, namely, backyard breeders, who breed a few purebred dogs just to make money, regardless of quality. They too should be avoided. Unethical breeders make millions and the pets and the public are their victims. It is best to protect yourself by acquiring your next pet from a respectable breeder, or better yet, save the life of one of the millions of abandoned pets waiting in shelters for a new home, instead of having to be killed to make room for more abandoned pets. The public has the power to stop
the senseless over-breeding once and for all. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. pet buyer, it’s in your hands. By supporting mass production of innocent little furry creatures, you support the continued carnage. You have the power to stop so much suffering. Only you! Think about it. To have the power to stop an entire cruel industry. Wow! To return to the event, free microchip scans were offered by the Lost Dogs of Illinois group. The group’s representatives also offered advice on what to do in case a dog is lost. Several animal shelters and rescues had adoptable dogs available. Their addresses, websites and Facebook pages are listed in the article. If you did not have a chance to read the article, find it on the BDR’s website, www.BelvidereDailyRepublican.net. Karen Gadke Capron, Ill. (815) 569-2642

Fashion Designing in McHenry County
F
By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
ashionistas in McHenry County will be delighted to learn that they can find designer outfits and still ‘shop local’ to support their community. Cynthia Ashby has been designing clothes for 23 years and moved her studio to the Starline Gallery in Harvard in October. “I design for the woman who does not subscribe to the fashion trends. This woman is on a perpetual treasure hunt, collecting pieces to mix and layer, creating different combinations and infinite choices for her wardrobe,” Cynthia states. “Basically, I make women’s clothing. My designs have texture, longer lengths, and different lengths. I use a lot of natural fibers: linen, cotton, wool and some silk. I make some sheers with nylon mesh.” “I was very young [when she started designing clothing] so basically, it just evolved. I made my own clothes, then started selling them to boutiques. I did it all through college. It paid my rent. Eventually, it paid off my student loans. After college, I started a company in Chicago.” “I sell to boutiques around the country – a lot on the West Coast and the East Coast and a sprinkling elsewhere. A lot of what I do you can’t find elsewhere. We do a collection, ship it and that’s it,” she

says. “It’s pretty limited. It’s a pretty small edition of things. Exclusive. One of the things I have always done since the beginning is dying. Everything is white, then we dye it. We layer colors.” Ashby grew up in the canyon land of southern California and saw the shifting of color palettes in nature in open fields and rocky mountains. She travelled to Chicago to study at the

School of the Art Institute of Chicago and watched changing architectural styles. She viewed the shifting of colors in the urban landscape as time passed and metals, stone and other materials that are exposed to the weather change patinas and shades. She studied sculpture and fiber arts. As a result, “Cynthia Ashby design embodies the interplay between
softness and structure. Her sensedriven fabric choices consider the weight and texture of fabric on the body. The modernity of her use of line and construction suggest shapemaking techniques used in sculpture and architecture,” her website biography tells us. “The collections are garment-dyed, creating unique, rich tones that fade into patina much like metal sculpture. Seasonal color palettes can be combined from past and future collections, giving the wearer room to create their individual look.” “Some collections are hand-dyed,” Ashby tells me. “I do those. We just shipped our Fall Collection of hand-dyed thermal knits. There is a website, Artful Home, that sells Arts & Wearables. That’s the category I’m in. It’s a great place to shop online and they have a catalog.” Cynthia Ashby does some showings such as one at the 1st Annual Art Fair of the Lakeside Legacy Foundation at the Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake. Her studio is located at Starline Gallery, 400 Front Street, Harvard, Illinois, 60033. It is always open during 4th Friday at the Starline events. Health Department reports rabid bat
WOODSTOCK — A bat found in a Fox River Grove home is the second rabid bat found in McHenry County this year. Test results for the bat, reported on Friday, September 11, confirmed the bat was positive for rabies according to the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH). No human exposure was reported, although potential exposure to a pet cat that swatted the bat is being taken into consideration. Keeping cats (even those who stay indoors) and dogs up to date with vaccinations will not only keep them from getting rabies but also provide a barrier of protection for you if a rabid animal bites your pets. If a beat is found in the home, contain the bat in a room by closing the door and immediately calling Animal Control at 815459-6222. In order to test bats for rabies, it is important the bat be in good condition (i.e. head is intact)—either alive or recently deceased. Only in cases of confirmed exposure are bats submitted for testing. Specimens in good condition that test negative for rabies eliminates the need for rabies treatment following human exposure. Statewide, 59 rabid bats have been reported in 2015, with roughly half of those found in northeastern Illinois. McHenry County has not recorded a rabid bat since 2013. Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, only confirmed by laboratory testing. The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid exposure. A bat that is active by day, found in a place where bats are not usually seen (such as in your home or on the lawn) or is unable to fly, is potentially rabid. People should take a “hands off” approach to all wild animals to reduce their risk of exposure. Children should also be educated to avoid handling wild animals. If you have questions about exposure, call MCDH’s Communicable Disease Program at 815-334-4500. the crowd to belt out the tune. The energy in the Apollo was palpable as it got later into the evening. UnSaid Fate, a female-lead rock quartet out of Cleveland was the most melodic band of the evening. Featuring a guest spot by Tommy Church, of Mushroomhead, filling in on guitar, they were eager to please the ever-growing crowd. Lead singer Jackie LaPonza’s enthusiasm paired with Church’s crowd enticing guestures helped generate a few off hand mosh-pit moments. When UnSaid Fate left the stage, the crowd packed in closer to the stage in anticipation of the first major name of the night- Hed PE. Hed PE, a rap/metal outfit that’s been playing for 21 years, immediately brought a new level of life to the crowd. Their 11 song set featured longtime favorites such as ‘Blackout’ and spanned through their whole discography. Their frontman, who goes by the name Jahred, thanked the crowd for their support before they threw in their own rendition of a few classic Bob Marley tunes mashed into one. By the time their set was over, there was not one fan near the front of the venue who wasn’t sweating and bopping their head to the music. Closing out the night were

UnSaid Fate the biggest drawing bandMushroomhead. Hailing from Cleveland and consisting of 9 different members, all masked and donning costumes for the occasion, the crowd screamed at the top of their lungs as the guys entered the stage. This may have been their first time in Belvidere, but the band used to play the former Bar 3 in Rockford before it was closed down, so they had an excellent turnout at the Apollo. Celebrating their 22nd year as a band, their chemistry was evident in their stage presence alone. Between the fascination with the two sets of water drums
being played and the various ensembles each member wore, all eyes were focused to the stage during their set. They opened with songs off their newest record and saved the oldies for last, spanning 13 regular songs and 2 encore performances. As they closed their set and tossed their used picks and sticks toward the center of the venue, the crowd continued to roar in appreciation. While that particular show may have ended, the feeling of excitement will likely continue to propel the Apollo in their future concert endeavors for years to come.

Marengo Varsity Football Team: Marengo 4-0 vs. Harvard 2-2 Marengo stands tough against Rockets attack By Chris Johnson Reporter
RICHMOND — It was the first home game for the Richmond-Burton Rockets in the 2015 Season. It was one that the Rockets would like to soon forget, after the Marengo Indians destroyed their hopes of a pleasurable season opener, with a 28-14 win. The victory pushed Richmond-Burton one full game behind Marengo and the Johnsburg Skyhawks in the race for first place in the Big Northern East Conference. With the win the Indians now look forward to this Friday night’s game against the Harvard Hornets…”The Castle Challenge”, known locally. Harvard’s play has been enigmatic this season, as they have showcased an explosive
offensive attack plan, which derailed the Stillman Valley Cardinals, a two-years removed State Champion, in the opening game of the season 34-26. The Hornets have also struggled, offensively, in attempting to get their scoring machine gassed-up. Since the season opening win over Stillman, the Hornets have lost two of their last three games. In week two they fell to the Winnebago Indians 22-18 and on Sept. 11, the Hornets lost a two-touchdown decision to Richmond-Burton, 21-7. On Friday, Sept 18, the Hornets stung the Burlington Central Rockets, improving their record to 2-2 following their 20-14 win. Harvard’s offense has been less productive over the last
few weeks. The Hornets have run up against programs which have been able to limit their offensive opportunities. In the opening game of the season, the Hornets put 34 points on the board. Over the last three weeks, Harvard has scored only 45 total points. Running into Marengo, at home, at Homecoming will be a major challenge for Harvard’s skipper, Sean Saylor. The Indians are a perfect 4-0 on the season, having put 153 points on the board, while allowing only 35, through four games this season. With a win over the Hornets on Friday night, Marengo has a legitimate chance to have already secured their position in the 2015 post-season, with their fifth win. A sixth win, means an automatic bid for the
Indians, who have to be sure to not look past the Hornets this weekend, in anticipation of next Friday night’s Big Northern East showdown with Burlington Central. Following next week’s match with the Rockets, the Indians face their conference co-leaders, the Johnsburg Skyhawks in week seven. On Friday night, the Skyhawks doubled up on their previous Big Northern East Conference co-leader, the North Boone Vikings, 50-27 to improve to 4-0 on the season. The game seven match-up is one that will be circled by Marengo Indians Head Coach Matt Lynch. The winner of the Oct. 9 contest will probably be looking at the inside track to snatch the sole championship in the Big Northern East Con-

ference this season. This Friday night is Homecoming in Marengo as the Indians prepare to welcome in the Harvard Hornets. The varsity contest is scheduled to kick-off around 7 p.m. with a ceremony recognizing the 2015 Marengo Indians Homecoming court, expected to be a part of the evening’s celebration. The junior varsity squad will take the field prior to the main event getting underway this Friday night.

It’s Homecoming in Marengo by Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent
This week is a very busy one for the students at Marengo Community High School. They are preparing for that very special back-to-school event – Homecoming! They are building floats and finding costumes to wear for the Homecoming Parade on Friday, September 25. They are excited to go to the Homecoming Football game Friday night against Harvard. Go, home team! Saturday, September 26, is the amazing Homecoming Dance and the decorating committee is ready for action. In the meantime, Friday, September 18, is the Pep Rally to bolster the school spirit and remind everyone of upcoming school activities. Monday is Generations Day where Freshmen dress as babies (in a school appropriate way) and Seniors dress as, well, seniors. Following classes, float building for the parade will go on until 7 pm. Tuesday is Dress as the Decade Day: Freshmen dress in clothing appropriate for the 1990s; Sophmores come in styles from the 1980s; Juniors hustle in attire from the 1970s; and Seniors peace out in 1960s garb. Again, teams will work on their floats until 7 pm. Wednesday, the students will put on their thinking caps for Radiant Testing: pre-ACT preparation. Thursday is Class Color Day
which is self-explanatory and parade float teams go into a frenzy of last-minute decorating to prepare for Friday’s parade. Friday is Maroon and White Day and the students adorn themselves with Marengo Community High School colors. The floats are judged in the morning. School ends early to allow time for the Homecoming Parade. The day will end after the Marengo/Harvard football game. Go, Indians, go! Saturday finds the girls primping and beautifying themselves while the guys are attempting to don ties for the Homecoming Dance. The Homecoming Royalty will be announced during the dance in the MCHS Commons between 8:00 and 10:30 pm. Besides all this, each of the sports teams from cross-country to tennis to golf have competitions scheduled this week. Busy, busy school body. The teachers have their MCHS cheerleaders raise the excitement level at the Pep Rally. hands full trying to keep teenage minds on their studies this week. But I have every confidence that they will manage. Homecoming is an annual event and a bit of excitement is normal for this time of year. The Marengo Community High School schedule for Homecoming events can be found online at www.mchs154. org. Or you can visit their Facebook page at Marengo Community High School.
