The Midwest Renegades Drill Team is performing at the Hooved Animal Humane Society Annual Picnic and Horse Show.
The animals are all well cared for and rehabilitated.” – Crystal, a HAHS volunteer

ANNE EICKSTADT
Putting their best hoof forward
I
’m paying more attention to the ground I am picking my way over than to the beautiful blue sky and fluffy, white clouds overhead. Today’s parking area has recently been cleared of the horses who usually pasture here and they have left ample evidence of their presence here at the Hooved Animal Humane Society [HAHS]. The gravel drive leading between fenced in pastures takes me to the performance arena. Elise and Jumping Bean, two tiny donkeys are trotting around the arena before being escorted out to make way for the Midwest Renegades Drill Team. This drill team is made up of girls aged seven – sixteen. They do a precision routine that many a rider would envy. The Midwest Renegades also
have a Trick Riding team, and a Flag team. They have also brought Merlin with them today. Merlin is a therapy ‘mini’ horse who can visit hospitals, schools, nursing homes and more. The Midwest Renegades are on hand to support the Hooved Animal Humane Society’s annual picnic and horse show fundraiser. “Our goal is to promote humane care of hooved animals,” says Jenna Dickson, the HAHS adoption coordinator here in Woodstock. “We are funded solely by donations. We work with the Sheriff’s Department and with Animal Control.” “We do investigations and rescues. We have about seventeen investigators. We serve all of Illinois,” she continues. “We have training programs so that the horses have a better chance of being adopted. Last year,
we adopted out 50 animals. We rescued 80.” HAHS currently houses 70 horses, 30 goats and sheep, 2 baby donkeys and 8 mini horses. “The animals are all well cared for and rehabilitated,” says Crystal, a HAHS volunteer. “I started volunteering here after my horse passed away two years ago.” Volunteers are all over today, taking gate admissions, giving directions, opening and closing gates for the performers and contestants, and running the events. The Long Eared Livery Service is carrying people from one end of the grounds to the other in a mule-drawn carriage. Inflatables are set up for children’s amusement outside of the main building. Inside is a craft fair, game and craft tables and lunch. HAHS is a non-profit organization that rescues hooved animals, brings them back to health, trains and adopts them out into permanent, loving homes. Over the years, the efforts of the HAHS national organization have produced the best laws in the country regarding horses. The Woodstock branch sends qualified horse people to test for the State Approved Humane Investigator Exam each year.
The general health maintenance of the animals at HAHS – Woodstock is provided by the U.S. Army, 719th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services. They use HAHS as a training ground where experienced veterinarians work with new veterinarians and teach proper care of large animals. They do this at no cost to HAHS. Contributions will enable the Hooved Animal Humane Society to continue to rescue and train hooved
animals. You can join the Adopt-A-Hoof program to sponsor the provision and training of one of the animals in HAHS’s care. You can also become a member of HAHS or volunteer at the farm. HAHS is located at 10804 McConnell Road, Woodstock, Illinois 60098. They can be found online at www. hahs.org or on their Facebook page at ‘Hooved Animals’.

A family fissue: more fish, means bigger tank needed JILL PERTLER Contributor
ried about them picking on little “Sharkbait” – whether they’d nip at him or keep him from accessing his food. I worried he might not adapt to his new environment. Or that he wouldn’t make friends with the existing team. None of those things happened. Sharkbait joined the group and they seemed to welcome his smallness with open fins. But things were far from golden. A couple of days after Sharkbait arrived, we found ourselves with a completely different fissue, or in layman’s terms, a fish issue. One of our perennial golden oldies had developed a red spot on his nose. It didn’t look good so I got on the Wiki and searched for an-

swers. Turns out it all comes down to habitat. Goldfish, which are actually a type of colorful carp, don’t like the small glass containers they so often call home. They do better in a larger environment – a recommended 20 gallons for the first fish, with 10 gallons for each additional set of fins. We have five fish. By my calculations, they need an entire bathtub – a large one. This seemed counterintuitive to everything I knew about goldfish culture. I had a friend who kept her goldfish in a large goblet. It couldn’t have held more than a couple of quarts of water. Her fish lived to a ripe old age, without any red spots anywhere. Apparently he was an anomaly. According to Wiki, “Fishbowls are not appropriate housing for goldfish, and are so detrimental to their health and well-being that they are prohibited by animal welfare legislation” (in some locations outside the U.S.). Legislation or not, compared to a goblet my fish had an expansive pool. Despite that, they had a fissue, which was my job to fix. I found a vessel about twice as large as their current tank and set it up as their new home. They seemed to like it. It’s hard to tell with fish. They aren’t big on showing emotions. Sharkbait lingered in the corner (maybe lonely), but after a time joined the rest of the group in swimming the lengths and depths of the new fish pad. The extra water and space must have helped the red-nose situation. In a few days, the spot on Goldy’s nose (we’ve since renamed him Rudolph) disappeared and he was back to swimming like his old self. The five of them have been healthy ever since. Sharkbait is growing. I bet by this time next year he will have caught up to Rudolph and the rest of the gang. Five fish isn’t so many, really. Some people have a lot more. For us, though, five is enough. I don’t want to have to upgrade and enlarge the tank ever again. That’s why (and I’m sure you’ll understand this) next year my son may have to skip the local fair.

Goldfish. Most people probably don’t give them a penny’s worth of thought. I never used to. Then my kid brought a few of the sparkly swimming gems home from a local fair and we were pet owners. This was last summer – over a year ago. This year, when the same son asked if he could go to the fair, I had one admonishment: Don’t come home with any more goldfish. After all these years as a parent, I’m still that naïve. Of course he came home with a goldfish. We all knew that’s how this would end up. So now we are goldfish plusone. No big deal, really. How much more complicated can one tiny, extra goldfish make things in the fish tank of life? Unfortunately that is not a hypothetical question. As goldfish stepmom, I worried about various problems that could crop up with the latest member of the crop. Our newest fish is much smaller than the existing four, who have obviously grown during their time living in our kitchen. I wor-
Celebrate OAKtober with two free programs October is OAKtober – Oak Awareness Month in the state of Illinois. For the second year in a row, Governor Bruce Rauner has proclaimed October as Oak Awareness Month in an effort to bring attention to the importance of Oak trees for a healthy ecosystem and to promote the need to curb the decline of Oak trees throughout Illinois. Natural Land Institute (NLI) will celebrate OAKtober – Oak Awareness Month by offering two free programs in “OAKtober.” The first one, “Citizen Science Bird Monitoring,” is a seminar about how to record what birds you see at Nygren Wetland Preserve in Rockton, Ill. on the eBird app. The date is Saturday, Oct. 8. A classroom session will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Talcott Free Library, at 101 E. Main St., Rockton, Ill., followed by a field trip at 1 p.m. to Nygren Wetland Preserve, at 3190 W. Rockton Road in Rockton, Ill. To register for this free seminar call (815) 964-6666 or email: info@naturalland.org. Many birdwatchers already visit the preserve on a regular basis, and we invite them and anyone else interested in becoming a citizen science bird monitor at Nygren Wetland Preserve to attend. Bird observations are valuable to us and this will be a great way to have a direct impact on the management of this wildlife habitat. Oak trees are the dominant tree species at Nygren Wetland and provide the perfect habitat for many types of birds, as well as mammals and insects. Ed Cope, Natural Land Institute’s Restoration Ecologist, will
lead the seminar. The second one, “OAKtober Hike” is a free guided tour of Burr Oak Valley Preserve, a private natural area owned by Natural Land Institute in Roscoe, Ill. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. NLI’s Director of Stewardship Zach Grycan, and Restoration Ecologist Ed Cope, will lead the hike through the rolling hills and oak savannas of Burr Oak Valley Preserve and talk about the ongoing restoration work, general differences between red and white oak trees and their environmental benefits. The White Oak tree is the State Tree of Illinois. Oak ecosystems are in a state of decline now after more than 5,000 years of being an important part of the Illinois landscape. There are several reasons for this including a lack of public awareness, poor management practices, reduced resources and an increase in non-native invasive species. The quality of wooded habitats in Illinois is listed as a “major concern” in the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan and suggests there is a need to manage oak decline in the state as we seek to understand it. Research shows that benefits of oak ecosystems and forests include improved air and water quality, carbon sequestration, soil fungi associations, social and economic health and well-being, providing jobs and income and essentially improve the quality of life across neighborhoods and community boundaries for all residents. Oak Awareness Month is an opportunity for different entities of government, conservation and rec-

The Grand Opening ribbon cutting with Gavin and Derek Burseth, owners; Cheryl Burseth (mom), Mayor Brian Sager, members of the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce in attendance.
Grand Opening is a Smash Hit
By Anne Eickstadt, CORRESPONDENT
The Burseth Farm shop on the historic Woodstock Square has been open since shortly after Mother’s Day this year. They chose Thursday to Sunday, September 15 – 18 to throw a Grand opening celebration. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place on Thursday evening. Mayor Brian Sager, members of the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and local business owners are in attendance. Grand Opening specials in the store are being snapped up and online sales are brisk as well. “Our Facebook page promotion is going to hit over 90,000 women from 18 years and up,” Derek Burseth tells me. Derek is co-owner of the business along with his brother Gavin.
“We have really loyal customers that come from Skokie and Schaumburg,” he says. The Burseth brothers once operated a kiosk selling their goat milk products at the Woodfield Mall. “A 93 year-old woman bought our soap. She thinks it is the best thing she ever tried.” The soaps are not all that people appreciate. Mayor Brian Sager barely had time to finish his welcome speech before the guests were exclaiming over the delicious goat cheese logs and other munchies set out for the event. “At first our goal was to do the milk and cheeses,” Derek says. “But the other products are very popular.” The first ingredient on every product’s list is ‘goat milk’. “We’re the only ones in the area who do goat milk products instead of using goat
Derek and Gavin Burseth chatting with Mayor Brian Sager.
milk ‘additives’ to them.” Mom Cheryl helps out in the store while Derek and Gavin are busy caring for their goat herds. “I’m really proud of my sons. They work really hard and a lot of hours.” They are working even more hours now since Gavin has just started college. He still helps care for the goats, make the soaps, cremes, lotions, and other products and run the store. Busy, busy, busy. Eric Burseth, their father says, “It’s great how they take it from the goats to making the soaps to selling, marketing and the internet sales.” The store’s product line has been expanded to include facial toners, makeup remover, lip and eye crème, a Mint Orange Walnut Scrub, a Chocolate Mint Spa Body Crème and more.
Derek is really excited about one new addition that has nothing to do with goat milk. “We now sell drones!” The one on display is an ‘Inspire 1 Pro’.” The store has become an authorized DJI Drone Dealer. Derek and Gavin also continue to take their products to shows and events such as the recent Septemberfest in Schaumburg and Scandinavian Days in Elgin. The Burseth Farm Store Grand Opening weekend offered specials
and discounts, scheduled baby goats on site, a massage therapist and crafts for the kids. Each visitor also received a special gift and the opportunity to win door prizes. Whether you are looking for 100% natural body products, goat milk, goat cheese, goat milk yogurt, Marvel character apparel, or DJI drones, you will want to visit the new Burseth Farm store. Online, they can be found at www.bursethfarm.com or on Facebook at Burseth Farm Woodstock Square.

Booking It Around Woodstock By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent The Woodstock Public Library has been around for 125 years. It officially opened for business on March 23, 1896, and occupied two rooms in the Woodstock City Hall (now the Woodstock opera House). In celebration of this momentous anniversary, the library is holding a special Scavenger Hunt which encompasses a very wide area. “Some locations are out in the rural Woodstock area library district,” says Library Director Nick Weber. “Outside the Woodstock city boundaries so you can explore the area.” “The scavenger hunt will run for five weeks. Some of the clues are easier, some are harder,” he continues. “Every Friday we put out clues. The answers are due in a week. We will be posting extra clues to the harder ones twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.” “Entry forms can be printed from the library’s Facebook page or picked up in person. You don’t have to be in it from the beginning to join in. Five prizes are given out each week: a book bag, a coffee mug, a book, a puzzle, and a lanyard and pins.” These prizes will be given to people who successfully find all the week’s scavenger hunt sites. Even if you do not find all the locations, each one you do find will earn you an entry for the Grand Prize drawing at the end of the hunt. The Grand Prize winners will be chosen on October 21. The First Place winner will receive a $25 gift card to ‘Read Between the Lynes’ on the historic Woodstock Square. Second Place will receive a three month membership to the ‘Woodstock Recreation Center’. The Third Place winner will get a ‘Culver’s’ gift certificate and a goodie bag. The locations are historic and/or iconic places around the area. In Week 1, for example, which ran from September 16 – 23, these clues were offered: A large red-brick structure that was built in 1857 and has dominated the west side of the Woodstock Square ever since. One lane only, under we go, one side is older than the other. Be careful not to get stuck with this one. This Wonder Lake restaurant is said to be the inspiration for the song, “Down By The Old Mill Stream”. This red brick building is one of the only remaining structures on the former Todd School campus. Built in 1894, this Greenwood mercantile is only three years younger than the Woodstock Public Library. To prove that you have actually found each site, you need to take a selfie at each location. Then present your selfies at the library to earn prizes and entries. Please be respectful of private property and be safe when taking the photos. So, if Clue #2 is the old trestle bridge at the corner of South Street and Lake Street, please watch for traffic before taking your selfie. Each week of the contest lasts from Friday to Friday. New clues are posted on Friday and your selfies are due to be turned in by 4:00 pm the next Friday. You can bring in your phone to show your pics or you can print them out and attach them to that week’s entry form to turn them in on time. If you want to join in the fun and unravel the clues for the Scavenger Hunt, the Woodstock Public Library is located at 414 West Judd Street, Woodstock Illinois. They can be found online at www. woodstockpubliclibrary.org or on Facebook at Woodstock Public Library.
Could the Old Courthouse Arts Center be the answer to Clue #1 in Week One of the Woodstock Public Library’s 125th Anniversary Scavenger Hunt?

If this bridge is the correct site for the Woodstock Public Library’s Week One, Clue 2, be very careful in taking your selfie. Look both ways before standing in the middle of the street.
Occupancy of animal services building targeted for October By Bob Balgemann REPORTER
It’s been a work in progress for several years, and now it’s getting close to becoming reality. The new Boone County Animal Services Building should be finished, and occupied by sometime in October. It will be located on county-owned land on the north side of Squaw Prairie Road, between the Maple Crest nursing home and Heritage Woods assisted living center. Final touches are being applied to the building. It now has electricity, lights are on air conditioning is running to seal the floor; the well and septic field are in, and kennel panels are in order. One of the major donations to the new shelter was $10,000 from Al Johnson, to put up a six-foot-high, chain link security fence around the property. The fence will be erected soon. The 3,300-square-foot building will cost an estimated
$1.040 million. Most of that money is coming from the sale of $800,000 in bonds, which was approved by voters Nov. 4, 2014. However, the actual building cost wound up being about $1.040 million, because of design changes and alternate construction items. So, the county board on Feb. 17 created a new fund containing the $5 increase in the cost of dog tags, which was approved Oct. 16, 2013. That money will be used to repay the general fund, which is financing the $251,781.93 difference in the estimated and actual cost. As is the case with some projects, glitches can occur along the way. One such problem arose with the shelter’s sidewalk along the public parking lot. Quality of the work prompted county Administrator Ken Terrinoni to write a letter, dated Aug. 18, to the contractor. The letter stated that the overseeing county roads and
capital improvements committee and architect Mark Schmidt “believe the finish of the concrete sidewalk is unacceptable. The committee and the architect concur on the inadequacy of the concrete work and believe the subcontractor should replace it.” The president of the subcontractor replied in a letter dated Aug. 26 that read, in part: “We are sorry you are not satisfied with the sidewalk along the public parking lot of the new animal services building. ...will be removing the sidewalk and repouring it. Please accept the enclosed check (for $500) as a donation toward the Boone County Animal Services.” Animal Services Department Supervisor Roger Tresemer said Sept. 7 that the $500 would go into the animal health donation fund. That money provides special care that some animals need when they are brought to the shelter. Those expenses are not covered in the department’s annual budget.

Cary business seeking expansion By Samantha Fetzner REPORTER
Sage Products, located on Three Oaks Road at the Cary/Crystal Lake border, is anticipating buying additional land and bring in substantially more positions within the company as an end result. Sage announced their plans to expand into an additional 27 acres of land just east of their current facilities on Three Oaks Road via the Cary Village Board in mid September. A large vacant parcel on the south side of the road will provide the medical supply-driven factory with 27 additional acres of land to expand their current operations. The purchase of the land is dependent upon it being rezoned and receiving community support from neighbors

reational groups, community organizations, industry, businesses, and citizens to take action to support our native oak ecosystems. Location/parking and registrationBurr Oak Valley Preserveis located on Elevator Road in Roscoe, Ill. Parking will be on site - look for flags at the entrance (south side of road, one tenth of a mile east of Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, 7404 Elevator Road in Roscoe). Additional parking is available at the church. The cost is free. Hikers should wear long sleeves, pants and sturdy shoes (moderate to difficult level hiking). Please register for this free event by Friday, Oct. 21 by calling (815) 964-6666 or by emailing info@naturalland.org. About the Natural Land Institute The Natural Land Institute is a 501(c)3, non-profit land trust and conservation organization based in Rockford, which has protected more than 16,000 acres of natural land in Illinois since 1958. NLI’s current service area covers twelve counties in northern Illinois. NLI’s mission is to create an enduring legacy of natural land in northern Illinois for people, plants and animals. The President of the Board of Trustees is Mark Maffei. For more information and to donate: www.NaturalLand.org.
in the immediate area. Completed projections revealed by Cary Village Administrator Chris Clark during a recent meeting anticipate approximately 350 jobs being created within the next five years based on current plans. The company currently employs approximately 700 people and was bought by a larger corporation, Stryker, early in 2016. Immediate results are expected to produce an additional 50 jobs by 2018. Sage Products has shown steady growth for more than a decade with no signs of slowing down or decline on
the horizon. Sage’s plans for their expansion have been divided into two phases as of this point. According to the plans disclosed by the village, phase one includes the additional of another warehouse, accounting for 200,000 square feet. The projected space would also house the company’s shipping docks for in and outbound product. More on-site parking would be in place as well. The company has called Cary home for 36 years. Their growth has also given them sponsorship and name additions to the local YMCA and even
a Centegra facility in McHenry, providing them more recognition throughout the county. The company’s intent to purchase the neighboring lot will come to fruition once the decision has been reached on whether the property can be rezoned and any other physical changes necessary to the immediate area have been discussed and approved, which is anticipated to happen before the holidays. The expansion would also require the road immediately to the easy, Sage Parkway, to be vacated to allow the land parcels to merge effectively.
