Woodstock Jazzes Up the Square By Anne Eickstadt, Correspondent

N

orthern Illinois jazz lovers gather ed in Woodstock on Friday and Saturday, August 21-22, for the 2015 Woodstock Jazz Festival. Hosted by Jazz on the Square, this weekend draws in new audiences as well as discerning music fans. The Festival opened Friday night at the Stage Left Café at 8 pm. A ‘Sold Out’ evening means that the Nia Quartet and Johnny Walker Trio play to a full house. The Nia Quintet is quite in demand in Chicago and features some of the finest musicians in Chi-town. They play original music composed by their trumpeter, Scott Anderson. Anderson was a semi-finalist in the 2012 International Songwriters Competition. The group receives rave reviews and their songs rise to the Top 50 on the playlist charts. The Johnny Weber Trio recently backed a dozen original jazz compositions with Billy Denk, one of the founders of Jazz on the Square. A free Jazz in the Morning concert is being held on the historic Woodstock Square. Accompanying the Woodstock Farmers Market, three jazz bands jam from the Gazebo. Potts & Pans Steelband leads off the morning at 8:30. The group is comprised of professional musicians and can vary from 1 to over 10 performers. www.pottsandpans.com.

WOODSTOCK — Thursday, September 3, marks the first anniversary of opening day for Down 2 Earth in Woodstock. Located at 107 E. Van Buren Street, it can be found between Material Things and Dave’s Woodstock Music and is just around the corner from Ethereal Chocolate. “It’s been an amazing first year. Thank you to everyone who has made it so great,” Nina Huffman, owner, says. Down 2 Earth carries jewelry, décor items, rocks and minerals, leather goods and more. Their herbs and teas have many healthful uses including calming the mind and aiding with digestion. The shop is open seven days a week and has been a big hit in the area. “We couldn’t do it without all of our new friends and our fantastic community,” Jason Neveu, Nina’s fiancé and co-owner, tells me. “We wouldn’t be successful without them.” “This is one thing we said we would never do,” Nina confides, “Our prices are already so great. But people have been so good to us and customers have asked for it. So, to celebrate our one year anniversary and to thank our wonderful customers and the community, we are offering, for one day only, 20% off our Native American jewelry.” The shop will be extending its hours of operation

that day from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm. “From 5-7 pm, our palm reader Deann will be here to do readings for $10.00,” Nina says. While visiting the shop, you will still be able to see Woodstock’s ‘Wild Thing’ gnarly antlers mounted on the wall. Jason found them while shed hunting – looking for antlers shed each year by the deer. They have been scored at 12 non-typical and have been presented a Unique award by the Wisconsin Buck and Bear Club. The leatherwork in the shop is hand-crafted but Jason is kept too busy to make many display pieces. He is creating custom designs for purses, bags, wallets, belts and more. One gal ordered a belt for her mountain-climbing boyfriend. The belt featured the entire Teton Mountain range spanning its length. Nina and Jason are both delighted to be approaching their first anniversary with Down 2 Earth. The shop is a dream come true for Nina. She learned to love retail while helping out at her mother’s, Cindy Huffman, shop, The Bison Trading Post. Cindy’s shop was located near the Woodstock Cinema before it closed in 2006. The great success of Nina’s dream is why she has decided to celebrate with this very special sale of Native American jewelry. More information on Down 2 Earth can be found on their Facebook page.

Gilbert “Smokey” Robinson. The original band (actually ‘Gilbert’s Social Outcast Band’) was comprised of ten kids ranging in ages from 13 to 17. Within a year they had doubled their repertoire and their group size. Since then they have jammed in some of the most prestigious ballrooms and events in the Chicago area. www. ojbmusic.com Saturday evening, the Rick Embach Trio opens for the Chris Greene Quartet at the Stage Left Café. The Chris Greene Quartet uses familiar contemporary music in much the same way that classical composers used historic native folk elements as a basis in their music. The Stage Left Café is adjacent to the Woodstock Opera House and serves as a concession and reception area for the Opera House. It also holds its own small stage for live performances. The Stage Left Café is located at 125 West Van Buren Street, Woodstock, Illinois, 60098. It can be found online at www.woodstockoperahouse.com/files/StageLeft/ StageLeftCafe Jazz on the Square was founded in 2007 to promote jazz education and performance. Hart acquitted of DUI, retains Woodstock councilman position By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

WOODSTOCK — Local business owner and new Woodstock Councilman Dan Hart’s impending DUI case was closed in mid-August, with Hart acquitted of one charge, but guilty of another. Hart, who owns two bar/restaurant establishments in McHenry Coun-

ty, was involved in a traffic accident in the early morning hours of July 14, 2014. The accident occurred on Route 47 between Hebron and Woodstock at approximately 1:30 a.m. Hart had been elected to the Woodstock City Council in April while these charges were pending. Hart, who was acquitted of

driving under the influence in this instance, has been found guilty of both causing and leaving the scene of a traffic accident. Public court records state that Tammy Adams, the other party involved in the accident, was struck in her vehicle by Hart’s as she turned into a parking lot that morning. Adams’ testimony went on to say Hart did stop and ask if she was alright, but left without providing any further information. Hart, who had been traveling from his bar in Hebron, Hart’s Saloon, to his home in Woodstock, was later arrested in his driveway by responding officers. Hart also owns D.C.

Cobbs in Woodstock. Court records show he declined to take a breathalyzer or field sobriety tests. The provided reasoning included that he had consumed one beer approximately 45 minutes before the accident and was suffering from an ailment in his ankle and wearing improper footwear. Police footage recorded by the dash cam that was disclosed during the trial show Hart stumbling at one point, but no other recorded signs of intoxication. Responding officers noted in their report that he both slurred his speech and had glassy eyes, in addition

to smelling like alcohol. He had not called and reported the accident, either. His testimony was that he was told by Adams to leave, and his cell phone was dead. Judge Joel Berg who presided over the case agreed with the defense that there was insufficient evidence to convict him of a DUI. His sentence for causing and leaving the accident includes a mild DUI style treatment as well as a $1,000 fine and six months of supervision. Due to Hart’s standing in the community, the case was heard by the county’s State’s Attorney Office. Hart’s elected position is still intact.

McHenry County towns top ‘Best Of’ list by Niche.com By Samantha Fetzner Reporter

MCHENRY COUNTY — For the second time in 2015, McHenry County towns and small cities are being recognized for their achievements and appealing features throughout the state. According to Niche.com, a popular ranking website, three places in the county were atop the list of ‘best town to raise a family in’. These rankings, determined by the website, are based on several different factors including the economy and real estate. The three McHenry County areas named to the list in Illinois were Harvard, Marengo, and Woodstock. Marengo was ranked 13, followed by Woodstock at 14 and Harvard at 32. There were a total of nine factors considered when listing the rank. The factors were as

follows: real estate purchase feasibility, access to amenities such as day cares, grocery stores, and libraries, level of engagement from the community, crime, education, as well as the percentages of population in age brackets 35 to 44 as well as below 9. The complete list assessed a total of 73 towns throughout the state of Illinois. Niche.com also released a ‘Best place to raise a family’ national list, but McHenry County did not make the cut on that. The closest area on the list was Arlington Heights. The Illinois list also had a caveat that large cities, rated as a population above 100,000, not be considered for the rankings. In addition to the numerical ranking, each city on the list received letter grades for each of the factors that contributed to their overall spot on the list.

Each of the McHenry County towns mentioned scored Bs in at least 4 of the factors. The vast difference in the population size between Marengo, Woodstock, and Harvard played a factor in the rankings as well. Harvard and Marengo are listed at under 10,000 residents, where Woodstock is estimated at 25,000. According to niche.com, the biggest struggle- grades of C or lower- for each area lied in their accessibility to the listed amenities. Marengo fell short in day cares and grocery stores. Woodstock needed improvement in libraries, and Harvard needed all three- grocery stores, day cares, and libraries. Niche.com releases these lists on an annual basis. Perhaps we will see McHenry County locations be more dominant on the rankings in 2016.

The McHenry County Master Gardeners have arranged an afternoon of visits to various businesses that you may not be familiar with. “These are working farms,” Master Gardener Bonnie Simon tells me. “You can pick and choose to go to one or all of them. You can stroll around or take a tour. Each farm has a specialty.” “Come and see what we grow,” Bob Casper invites. On Sunday, September 27, you can choose to visit any of eleven farms. These farms will be open to visitors from 12 – 5 pm. Their locations range from Richmond to Hebron, from Harvard to Marengo and from Union to Woodstock.
