T

here are only two candidates for the 2016 Racine County Fairest of the Fair crown this year – Jenna Franseen and Dormie Roberts.

Jenna Franseen Franseen is the daughter of Dave and Julie Franseen of Franksville. She is a 2011 graduate of Case High School and attends the University of Wisconsin–Madison, majoring in marketing and international business. She served as president of the Madison Business Mentoring club. Franseen also volunteers in the community as a member of the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board and has studied abroad in England and Cuba. She interned with the Dane County 4-H, planning the Youth Day at its fair for more than 1,000 children. She also interned with Case New Holland Industrial Capitol and is interning at Target headquarters in Minneapolis. Franseen joined the Tucker 4-H Club in the third grade and spent 11 years in the program. She held many offices in the 4-H program, including club president, county president and Racine County 4-H ambassador, as well as serving as chairman and co-chairman of a variety of volunteer and youth events. At the Racine County Fair, she showed everything from rabbits to cake decorating over the years, also volunteering at the

petting zoo and represented the 4-H as an Outstanding Teen.

Dormie Roberts Roberts graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville with bachelor’s degree in agriculture education in May. After graduation, she applied for the position of Alice in Dairyland, where she became one of the top-five candidates. Roberts grew up in Burlington and was an active FFA member. She served as the chapter treasurer 2008-09, and as president in 200910. Through FFA and the Schaal Dairy Farm, Roberts was able to show a dairy heifer at the Racine County Fair for six years. She also worked as a youth camp counselor at YMCA Camp MacLean. Roberts interned with the UW-Extension in Racine County as the 4-H youth development intern, where she helped plan three different youth camps, organized events at the fair, and assisted volunteers at the county level. She was an active participant at the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Conference, where she had the opportunity to network with local producers about the dairy industry. “With my passion for agriculture and my love for the Racine County Fair, I believe I would be the best candidate to serve as the 2015 Racine County Fairest of the Fair,” she wrote in her application.

These sheep seem to be saying “I want to get out and see the fair.” The sheep were part of the Racine County Fair’s 2014 petting zoo – always a popular attraction at the fair. Last year’s fair had a record attendance with more than 100,00 people enjoying the festival.

A favorable week of weather made for a fantastic Racine County Fair in 2014, which took place at the Racine County Fairgrounds. Attendance broke the 100,000 mark last year, with 100,514 passing through the gates. The total attendance in 2013 was 89,678. In 2013, a rainy day on Friday kept fairgoers away, while 2014’s weather was good throughout the whole week, with the exception of a few rain showers late Sunday afternoon. “The weather was pretty perfect,” said Scott Gunderson, president of the Racine County Agricultural Society. In addition, Gunderson touted the great value fairgoers get for the price of admission. In addition to all the exhibits and animals, he said there’re six different free shows running throughout the fair, an antique tractor area with demonstrations, the Runzheimer Stage featuring free, live music all day , and much more. “We offer a lot,” he said. Last year was also a record year for the large animal auction and for the fur and feather sale. The large animal auction, featuring steers, hogs and lambs, raised a total

of $564,801 for Racine County youth, which was up $100,000 from the previous year. The fur and feather sale raised $49,695, which was up about 27 percent from the 2013 total. Gunderson couldn’t quite put his finger on why the sales went so well, but he was appreciative of all the buyers at the fair. “We have some great people who support the youth of the Racine County Fair,” he said. Gunderson noted that many of the youth who sell animals at the fair, put the money towards a college education. “There’s no doubt in my mind that this is the best sale in Wisconsin. We’re one of the largest animal fairs in the state,” Gunderson said. In memorial There was some time set aside during last year’s fair for remembrance and tribute to three individuals who recently lost their lives, who all were involved with, and loved, the fair. Marvin “Marv” Saltzmann, was a member of the Racine County Agricultural Society’s Board of Directors for 38 years, spending 10 years as President. He died in June 2013 at the age of 72. Family and friends gathered on the first

day of the fair, to dedicate a special memorial seating area in honor of Saltzmann, near the large animal buildings. A special plaque sits on a large rock, which came from the Saltzmann family farm in Waterford. The plaque recognizes Saltzmann’s contributions to the fair and also reads, “It’s for the Kids,” which was a favorite saying of Marv’s. “It’s a great tribute to Marv Saltzmann for all of his years on the fair board,” Gunderson said. On April 20, Easter Day, the Racine County Fair family lost a young man who loved showing steers at the fair. Greg Treffinger, of Waterford, who was 29, died in a motorcycle accident. He was the son of Tom Treffinger and Patti Beck, Waterford. Friends and family also gathered to dedicate a new memorial bench at the fair, in Greg’s honor. Missy Kempken was just 21 when she lost her life to esophageal cancer on May 4. The daughter of Mike and Debbie Kempken, Burlington, Missy loved the fair and enjoyed weaving baskets and showing swine. Friends and family held a special T-shirt fundraiser during the fair, to raise money for a memorial bench. In addition, it was announced during the swine show that a special memorial scholarship will be established in Missy’s honor.
