W

elcome to the 2016 RORO Expo. Whether you are attending our event today as a business partner or a community member, please know how much your support means to the Stateline Chamber and the RORO Expo Committee. Our expo has always been a testament of how one community can come together to celebrate the excellent local services and products offered in the Stateline and this year is no MICHAEL exception. PROSSER The Hononegah High School Sports Dome, which has been our host for the past 13 years, collapsed in December due to winter weather. In the weeks following, our community partners

rallied together offering help and even a new location to meet. We are so appreciative that All World Machinery graciously reached out to us offering to host our 2016 expo. Besides our new location, you will also notice another big update. We are excited to be hosting the RORO Expo in 2016 for the first time as the newly merged Stateline Chamber of Commerce. We have had great success partnering as the Rockton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Roscoe Area Chamber of Commerce in the past and we look forward to a future of growth and to continuing to be a tremendous resource to the entire Stateline community. Stateline Chamber of Commerce welcomes visitors to 20th RoRo Expo in new venue By Marianne Mueller Reporter

ROSCOE — RoRo Expo is heading back into the Stateline on March 12-13 in the events 20th year. After the Hononegah dome collapsed last December RoRo Expo committee members were given the task to find a new venue to hold this popular and consistently growing event. Success was found when All World Machinery in Roscoe generously stepped up to offer a place to hold the event. The Stateline Chamber of Commerce welcomes hundreds of vendors including either new or returning businesses, nonprofit organizations, food vendors and entertainment. In a two-day time span the public have a full scale opportunity to see what the Stateline has to offer. Meet State Representatives, village officials, local media sources, home-based businesses, plus members of various church congregations. Police and fire personnel will greet and educate guests in their booths. All weekend the Rockton Loin’s Club is offering free hearing and diabetic screenings on a hearing bus from the Lions of Illinois Foundation. Sign-ups may be completed by visiting the Rockton Lion’s Club table at the RoRo Expo entrance. This year the RoRo Expo was organized by a group of 11 volunteers led by Chair Michael Prosser of the Hoffman House, Firehouse Pub and Forest Ridge Events. Numerous volunteers also work behind the scenes with set up and during the weekend of the Expo. MP Heating and Cooling will be on hand once again to help with outside traffic and unloading trucks and cars. The first Expo took place in the Hononegah High School gymnasium in 1992 under a different name. By 2002 the event expanded to hosting 150 booths. Over its long running existence the RoRo Expo has grown into one of the most anticipated events of the year. In 1996 former Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ruth Pennycook came up with a catchy name that

incorporated both towns represented by each Chamber of Commerce at that time. The name RoRo was agreed on and remains the same today. The RoRo Expo was held at the dome for a number of years. “Loading will be much easier for vendors at All World Machinery,” said Stateline Chamber Executive Director, Mickey Heinzeroth. “The Stateline Chamber extends sincere gratitude to All World Machinery. Their generosity and hospitality is reflected through all of the businesses that benefit from the RoRo Expo, and the nearly 8,000 attendees we see each year,” says Heinzeroth. Action runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. All World Machinery is located at 6164 All World Way in Roscoe. Call (815) 623-9065 or contact the Stateline Chamber at info@Statelinechamber.com for more information. Admission is free! RoRo Expo: Bringing the community together since 1992 In 1992, under a different name and smaller in size, the early beginnings of RoRo Expo began. The name “RoRo” came to be in 1996, as a spinoff of BOCO, which stands for the Boone County Expo. The original idea for RoRo was to have an opportunity once a year for local area businesses, that did not have a storefront, to showcase themselves to the public. The main founders of the event were American Family Insurance, Beloit Daily News, The Rockton Herald along with numerous realtors, local banks and small businesses. The first expo was held in the main gymnasium of Hononegah High School. Approximately 45 booths displayed their business while the metal gym was used for non-profit organizations and food vendors. In 1996, the RoRo Expo, with the guidance of Miss Pennycook, was adopted by the Roscoe Area and Rockton Chambers of Commerce with a new look and feel. These two “Chamber Neighbors” worked together for one purpose, to showcase our

community to you. In 2002, the RoRo Expo was able to enlarge to over 150 vendors under one roof. This enlarged event was due to the newly constructed Hononegah Community High School Athletic Dome. It was at this time that all food vendors, area businesses and non-profit organizations could combine in one location along with the entertainment, demonstrations and the new kidz korner. In 2010, the idea of “giving back” to one of our own, became a new focus along with offering free services to the public. Cotton candy sales, hair cuts, chili cookoff contests and more, were held to help raise funds for the Goldie B Floberg Center of Rockton. The free services that were also added for our visitors were things like children’s car seat checks, blood pressure screenings, eye & hearing exams, blood drive and children’s DNA/ID information just to name a few. In 2012, we expanded the “Free Ser-

vices” at RoRo Expo by enlarging the kidz korner, “giving back” to the local food pantry and offered 4 clinics through out the weekend event that visitors could partake in. This year there will be more new vendors that will have information for you about their company and old friendly faces of those you already do business with. The basic idea of RoRo still exists today, with the main focus on showcasing our stateline community to you. This past 2015 Expo, more than 150 area businesses were on hand to talk with you and over 7,500 people came to visit, keeping this, “The Stateline’s Premier Exhibitor Event!”

Rockton, Roscoe: A great area to live, work, play

March 3, 2016 - The Herald - RoRo Expo - Page 11

Convenient location, excellent schools, community opportunities for employment, recreation, shopping and a beautiful and safe place to live and work is why the Rockton/Roscoe region thrives with continued growth.

Village of Rockton The Village of Rockton offers a quaint, small town way of life and many amenities as well. Stephen Mack is considered the founder of the Village of Rockton. Mack arrived in the northern Illinois area in 1823 and lived with the Indians. Mack met his future wife Hononegah in the mid-1820s, and a total of nine children were born to the couple. It was at Macktown that Stephen Mack took steps to provide formal education for his children. He helped to convert the second floor of Sylvester Stevens’ woodworking shop, which stood just west of the Mack home, into a private school that was operating by 1840. This school served children from the settlement for a number of years until the classroom and shop were heavily damaged by fire. Hononegah died in 1847, and Mack died in 1850. Today, the Rockton-Roscoe School District is named after Hononegah.

The Roscoe area was first settled along the Rock River in 1835, and named for one of its early settlers. As Roscoe grew it became a stagecoach stop for travelers heading west. By the first decade of the 20th Century, Roscoe continued its growth along the interurban railroad, with daily service being supplied by the Rockford, Beloit and Janesville Railway. The advent of the automobile eventually forced the interurban out of business, with the last car passing through Roscoe in October, 1930. The high quality of education has attracted many families to our community. The Village of Roscoe was incorporated in 1965. Today, Roscoe continues its growth at a steady pace through residential and commercial developments, and offers abundant recreational opportunities and extensive community services.

Roscoe, Rockton come together to launch Stateline Chamber By Jean Seegers Reporter

MACHESNEY PARK — It was party time at Forest Ridge Events Center, 11189 Forest Hills Road, Thursday evening, Feb. 11. After three years of planning, compromising and working together, members of the Roscoe and Rockton Chambers came together to celebrate the creation of the Stateline Chamber of Commerce. The evening included a four-course dinner, a short program and music provided by Miles Neilsen and the Rusted Hearts. Vice President and Marketing Director Ryan Rydell said the culmination of the merger was a huge relief. “Merging the two chambers will result in one bigger and better chamber,” he said. Chamber President Laura Baluch explained how the merger came to be. “Uniting the chambers would only happen if members of

both chambers wanted it. There were many legal and logistical steps involved,” she said. “Members from both the Rockton and Roscoe Chambers overwhelmingly supported the merger. We have taken two great chambers and made it one great chamber.” Stateline Executive Director Mickey Heinzeroth said the merger brought 95 Rockton members and 270 Roscoe members together. “All stayed the course.” Heinzeroth said the merger will result in “more events, more educational, networking and marketing opportunities and more fun.” Stateline Chamber unveiled a new website – www.statelinechamber.com, and a new orange and blue logo with the theme: “Connect, Grow and Prosper.” The first community event sponsored by the new chamber will be RoRo Expo, March 12-13. This year RoRo will be held at All World Machinery Supply, 6164 All World Way, in Roscoe.
