‘The Night Before Christmas’ originated in 1823 A Visit from St. Nicholas,” more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” from its first line, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837. The poem has been called “arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American” and is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today. It has had a massive impact on the history of Christmas gift-giving. Before the poem gained wide popularity, American ideas had varied considerably about Saint Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors. “A Visit from St. Nicholas” eventually was set to music and has been recorded by many artists. ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all thro’ the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads And Mama in her kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap?—? When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters, and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below; When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound: He was dress’d all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnish’d with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys was flung on his back, And he look’d like a peddler just opening his pack: His eyes?—?how they twinkled! His dimples: how merry, His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry; His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny And the smoke it encircled his head like a reindeer, wreath. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, He had a broad face, and a little round I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. belly More rapid than eagles his coursers they That shook when he laugh’d, like a bowl came, full of jelly: And he whistled, and shouted, and call’d He was chubby and plump, a right jolly them by name: old elf, “Now! Dasher, now! Dancer, now! And I laugh’d when I saw him in spite of Prancer and Vixen, myself; “On! Comet, on! Cupid, on! He spoke not a word, but went straight to “Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away his work, all!” And fill’d all the stockings; then turn’d As dry leaves that before the wild with a jerk, hurricane fly, And laying his finger aside of his nose When they meet with an obstacle, mount And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose. to the sky; He sprung to his sleigh, to his team gave So up to the house-top the coursers they a whistle, flew, And away they all flew, like the down of With the sleigh full of toys?—?and St. a thistle: Nicholas too: But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out And then in a twinkling, I heard on the of sight? roof Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good The prancing and pawing of each little night.

Machesney Park announces holiday lighting contest The Village of Machesney Park is pleased to announce its annual Outdoor Holiday Decorating Contest, and encourages residents to bring the holiday spirit into their neighborhoods by decorating their homes. To nominate a well-decorated home, residents can call Machesney Park Village Hall, 815-877-5432, or fill out a contest entry form available at Village Hall, on the Village website or Facebook Page, or send an e-mail to clerk at machesneypark.org.

The Village of Machesney Park is very appreciative of the generosity of Machesney Park merchants who provide prizes that promote business in the Village and encourage residents to shop locally. Machesney Park Merchants donate prizes that will be compiled into 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Prize Baskets for awarding to the top three winning homes. Village President Steve Johnson says the annual outdoor decorating contest always brings a competitive spirit among

neighbors. “It’s great to see entire blocks of homes that light up with holiday spirit, and I’m looking forward to seeing what our residents come up with this year,” he said. Nominations will be accepted through Dec. 18. The top three winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Village Board Meeting on Monday, Dec. 21, 6 p.m. For more information, contact Lori Mitchell, Village Clerk, Village of Machesney Park, 815-877-5432.
