Welcome to the 2015 Lifescape Senior Expo ‘Launch Your Dreams’ with Special Guest Retired Astronaut, Joe Tanner
This year’s Lifescape Senior Expo is going to be one of the best Expos ever! The Lifescape staff, board and I are extremely excited to be able to bring retired astronaut Joe Tanner to the Expo. Joe is from my hometown of Danville, Ill., so this is especially exciting for me. In addition to Joe Tanner’s fabulous presentation on “Life in Space,” we have more than 100 vendors this year. Each one of them brings something unique to offer you in the way of information, services and fun. Speaking of fun, we will have an activity area for your enjoyment. This year we have brought together games, messages and the ever-exciting nutrition Bingo. Many new activities will be available to keep your day fun and exciting. There will also be places for you to rest your tired feet after spending time with our vendors and enjoying the fun. On our stage we have a variety of music and entertainment, including a special performance by the Senior Follies cast doing some of their favorites from Mary Poppins. In addition, we will have presentations on health, nutrition and many other topics. Returning this year we have health screenings - flu and
pneumonia and shingles vaccinations to help you get a jump start on staying healthy over the coming winter. The cooking demonstration has always been a favorite, so this year we will have our Kitchen Manager Kathy Myers show you how to cook healthy, while also making it taste delicious. And to prove it, she will have samples for you to taste after she shows you how to prepare it. I personally welcome you to this year’s Lifescape Senior Expo. I look forward to seeing you there. Thank you for joining us for two days of fun and excitement! Carol Green Executive Director, Lifescape Community Services

The Contributions of the United Way of the Rock River Valley You hear about United Way campaigns where you work. You see the ads on TV or see them in the newspaper. But you may still wonder what is the United Way and what does it do? Its main purpose is to fund organizations like Lifescape Community Services. Through the donations, either individually or corporately, Lifescape receives funding for its three main programs – the Meals on Wheels program, SeniorAssist through Program Services and Brightside Adult Day Service. The three-year grant is reviewed annually and adjusted to reflect the amount of giving from its most recent campaign. Without the help of the United Way of the Rock River Valley, Lifescape’s programming and help for the senior population would be greatly reduced. And that’s the same for any of the 47 agencies that partner with the United Way. Working with agencies in both Winnebago and Ogle Counties, the United Way helps to make life easier for those who need it. From community centers to hospice, from help for those with developmental disabilities to teens and seniors, the United Way has focused on improving the lives of many. First created in 1919 as the Social Services Federation, the United Way of the Rock River Valley, as quoted in its mission, “is an organization focused on making a difference in our community by uniting with the volunteers, agencies and members with in to generate a positive social change.” Reaction to this mission is seen every year by the outpouring of support from the community it serves. Many of the regions top corporate citizens use the United Way as a conduit to serve the numerous non-profits in the area. The United Way also partners with organized labor to make sure the community is aware of the needs and issues most important to working families. Management and labor work side by side on volunteer efforts to improve the life of our community and its residents.
Volunteerism is also a big part of how the United Way creates ways for individuals to serve the community. Through its Volunteer Center, the United Way pairs volunteer opportunities with those who wish to serve. It teaches people many ways to nurture volunteers and to how create volunteer opportunities. With its volunteer recognition programs, the spotlight is put on those who dedicate themselves to working and helping others. By participating in a United Way Day of Caring Project, area companies show their support for local agencies by volunteering their time and effort. Over the years, volunteer work crews from Byron’s Exelon Nuclear Generating Plant, Hamilton Sundstrand and McGladrey have helped Lifescape with various projects. You often see the words “Live United” connected with the United Way logo. That’s more than just a slogan. That’s a call to action for everyone in the community. By living united, we are able to accomplish more. By pooling resources, the United Way is able to help more. All of the donations given to the United Way of the Rock River Valley remain here to help neighbors, friends and family through programs and services. To learn more about the United Way of the Rock River Valley, just call (815) 968-5400 or visit www.unitedwayrrv.org. PAUL LOGLI CEO of United Way of the Rock River Valley

Lifescape’s Services Made Possible by Senior Expo Did you know that the services of Lifescape Community Services are available in part because of Senior Expo? Nutrition Services, SeniorAssist and Brightside Adult Day Service are all possible because of your partnership and support of Senior Expo. This translates to providing over 250,000 nutritious meals to seniors. Annually, we are also able to assist over 4,000 older adults with everything from Medicare signups to affordable heating and cooling for their homes, Benefit Access Program applications and much more. Lifescape Community Services is the largest agency in northwestern Illinois serving older adults, families and caregivers. Whether a person needs a nutritious meal, help completing complicated paperwork, assistance in paying bills, a safe place to go during the day or wants to put their talents and skills to use by volunteering at a local nonprofit agency, Lifescape Community Services is the resource that can help meet that need. Lifescape is northwestern Illinois’ top resource for keeping older adults nutritionally healthy, independent, connected and informed. Our Nutrition Services Department provides hot nutritious meals to homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle and Lee counties. Our friendly, professional drivers offer safety checks along with what may be the only hot meal our clients receive. The kitchen staff on Kilburn Avenue provides meals for our senior dining sites in Winnebago and Boone counties, while our south kitchen in Oregon provides the service to Ogle and Lee counties. Our congregate dining and restaurants sites at Benton St Diner in Winnebago, Spring Garden Restaurant in Loves Park, Ned’s Restaurant in Belvidere and Fiesta Palace in Mt. Morris, provide more active seniors an opportunity to choose their meal from a multi-item menu and socialize with friends old and new – all for just a sug-

Senior Follies:
Writer/Director Angie Fellows Runs the Show Beginning in 1994, when I stood second in line to audition for the very first Follies, I helped coordinate the shows regarding content, costumes and staging.
In 2002, I assumed full direction of the Senior Follies. This included writing all the scripts and overseeing the entire show productions.

Save the date for 2015 Senior Follies!
Yes, it’s just September, but Senior Follies will be here before you know it! In June, “SHOWBIZ” was a big hit with nearly 1,500 people enjoying a great show. We held the 2014 Senior Follies at the Harlem High School auditorium. It was a great venue and the school district was a great host! The Follies will perform a “Mary Poppins” theme show at this year’s Senior Expo from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. The Senior Follies are always looking for interested seniors to be a part of the cast. If you’d like to participate in the Senior Follies visit booth #705 for information.
For the past 21 years, the Senior Follies demonstrated that growing older doesn’t mean growing old. We have energetic performers in their 50s to their 90s. Most fulfilling to me is what our Follies has done for the image of old age. The upside from our volunteer work is that we contributed to the community by entertaining and raising funds for a worthy cause. We always laughed a lot in rehearsals. We constantly used our brains to learn words to many songs. We exercised with stage movements and dance steps. We met challenges. Most of us try to live as healthy as we can for as long as we live. We realize that, no matter how healthy we are at one age, we won’t be that healthy at a later age. I think to myself, how much longer do I have to live? So, why not enjoy myself and have fun! Angie earned a B.S. in nursing education and a M.S. in business management. In 2014, Angie was honored with the RAMI (Rockford Area Music Industry) award for community service.
