Lena Public Library hosts an afternoon of fun for young readers Tony Carton Editor
LENA — The conference room downstairs in the Lena Public Library was dark and totally silent, which would not be unusual except there were thirty little people scattered on blankets and pillows all across the room. They had gathered to enjoy the feature film, Big Hero 6 and escape the summer’s heat in the library’s air conditioning. You could hear a pin drop. Friday’s movie was just one in a series of library happenings planned for young readers throughout the summer. “Next week we will host a carnival to end our summer reading program,” said Lena library director Dixie Althoff. She said the carnival would be a fun filled event with games, prizes and a bingo table. “We had a very successful
summer reading program this year,” Althoff said. “We had 104 young people signed up to read and they participated fully.” A pair of heavily “bedazzled” guitars by the library’ main desk stand in testament to the children’s dedication to reading. “The guitars are almost covered with gems and each gem symbolizes ten books or two hours of reading,” Althoff said. She said the library staff is already planning their After School and Story Hour programs for the next reading season. The After School Programs are on Mondays and serve youngsters kindergarten through fifth grade and Story Hour is on Tuesdays and

Cheese and Cheers event draws favorable response in Lena By Tony Carton Editor
LENA — Dozens of folks made time Saturday afternoon for a leisurely drive through the rolling hills of Stephenson County to stop at local cheese stores, cheese plants, craft breweries and a winery. The occasion was Cheese and Cheers, an activity organized to expose folks to the growing number of craft breweries, wineries and artisan cheese makers in Stephenson County. “Today we have a great opportunity for people to get out and experience some local beer, local wine and local cheese all made right here in Stephenson County,” said Lena Brewery president Ross Vehmeier. He said the reception was
positive and very strong. “We’ve had a great group of people come out and they’re very happy about the beers and it looks like everybody’s had enough cheese, so we’re making sure they have enough snacks and beer and they’re happy,” Vehmeier said. Folks were clamoring all afternoon for Lena Brewery’s caramel pecan coffee stout. “That stout has been very popular today as well as our thirty-eight degree hefeweisen,” he said. He said a mild cheese accompanies the hefeweisen very well, but he recommended something a little more aged and smoky to pair up with the caramel pecan coffee.

“I think aging and smoke would combine there to be wonderful,” Vehmeier said. “We actually sell a smoked Rofumo that would be perfect with the caramel. It’s not too heavy, so they pair nicely; that smoked flavor with the sweet and kind of dry malt from the stout. It’s very nice.” He said they would definitely repeat their participation in a

STATELINE — Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will start, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. It’s a home security system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your
battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the criminal won’t stick around. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The sound of an alarm could be useful there too. This could also be useful for a medical emergency, where you can’t reach a phone.

SENATE WEEK IN REVIEW July 20-24
SPRINGFIELD — More than three weeks into a new fiscal year, the budget stalemate has revealed stark differences in the way reformminded Republicans and status-quo Democrats envision Illinois’ future. Gov. Bruce Rauner and Republican lawmakers are seeking a constitutional 12-month budget anchored on solid governmental and business reforms to improve the state’s economy, freeze property taxes, and implement term limits and take “politics” out of the process of drawing legislative boundaries. Democrat leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives have settled for an unbalanced, one-month budget, and are advocating for a continuation of failed fiscal policies and unstable business practices that have left Illinois with the third-worst business climate, the second-highest property taxes, and the worst credit ratings of any state. The Illinois Constitution requires the General Assembly to pass a balanced 12-month budget. In May, Democrat leaders pushed through a plan based on expected revenues of $32 billion and proposed spending of $36 billion. That budget has been vetoed by Gov. Rauner, but Democrat lawmakers last week voted to override several of his vetoes, further complicating budget negotiations. Both House Speaker Michael Madigan and Sen-
ate President Cullerton have repeatedly said that their number-one issue is the budget deficit – not the economy or the taxpayers – and have resisted nearly every effort toward reform. It’s tough to take them at their word because they voted to pass a budget with a $4 billion deficit, and they have introduced no proposals to cut enough or raise taxes to cover the shortfall. Need for compromise House lawmakers returned to Springfield July 21 for hearings that Democrat legislative leaders said showed the perils of adopting Rauner’s pro-business agenda. The Senate has its next session days scheduled for Aug. 4 and 5. The General Assembly’s Democrat leaders need to stop the public relations gimmicks like the Committee of the Whole political theater, and make more attempts at compromise. Gov. Rauner has already offered to come more than halfway by scaling his policy agenda down from more than 40 items in his Turnaround Agenda to only a handful, and backing away from right-to-work legislation. He has also offered movement on tax reform to find additional revenues to help balance the budget. Law could help save millions A new law that would end state payments to benefit

Signed by the Governor July 21, House Bill 3311 requires the Department of Human Services and the Department of Public Health to crossreference public aid recipients with the names of those who state records indicate are dead. Records of the deceased are kept by the Department of Healthcare and Family Services. A year ago, the media reported the payment of millions of dollars in state medical care benefits to people who were dead. One report, citing the Auditor General, indicated state government paid out millions during Fiscal Year 2014 to more than 1,100 people who were deceased. Another story by the Chicago Tribune stated that nearly 6,000 people known to be deceased were considered eligible for state medical services. And as recently as May, the Auditor General highlighted state spending of more than $320,000 by the Illinois Department on Aging for services for people who were dead. Four companies close during 10-day period A recent report by the Illinois Policy Institute states that in a 10-day period in July, four manufacturers announced that they will be shutting down their operations in Illinois. According to the July 16
report by Michael Lucci: “General Mills announced July 16 it will shut down a manufacturing plant in West Chicago, laying off 500 local food-manufacturing workers at the plant. One day earlier, Bunge North America announced 210 manufacturing jobs will disappear after the closure of its plant in Bradley, Illinois. The General Mills news comes just two days after machine-maker DE-STA-CO announced it would move 100 jobs from Wheeling, Illinois to Nashville, Tennessee; and 10 days after an as-yet-unnamed company announced it will move 500 manufacturing jobs from the Chicago area to East Chicago, Indiana.” The report states that jobs losses from just these four manufacturers total more than 1,300. Governor seeks federal flood relief for crops On July 23, Gov. Rauner sent a letter to USDA officials requesting all counties in Illinois experiencing crop damage related to recent flooding be included in a Secretarial Disaster Declaration. A Secretarial Disaster Declaration would provide farmers in designated counties the ability to receive low interest emergency loans if they meet all eligibility requirements. The State Emergency Board will convene July 27 to review the county emergency board minutes and loss assessments in preparation for determin-

ing county eligibility. The Illinois Department of Agriculture will continue to assist U.S. Farm Service Agency (FSA) officials in securing benefits for farmers who are impacted by flooding. Even those crops not damaged directly by flooding have suffered. Long periods of rain and drenched fields have slowed farmers all season and so far, crops haven’t been able to make up for the slow start. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the second cutting of hay is only 52% complete, compared to the fiveyear average of 83%. 96% of soybeans have now emerged from the soil, still behind the five-year average of 100%. 75% of corn plants are silking, compared to the typical 77% at this point, though 17% have reached the dough stage, which is actually ahead of the five-year average of 16%. Precipitation last week averaged .97 inches across the state, .18 inches more than normal, leaving an average of 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Though many farmers were still waiting on fields to dry out more before they were able to work. Crop conditions are dropping again, with 56% of corn acres rated as good or excellent, compared to 61% last week, and 47% of soybeans receiving the same marks, down from 52%.

Madigan warns homeowners to be on alert for storm-related home repair scams CHICAGO — Following last week’s severe storms, Attorney General Lisa Madigan today warned western Illinois residents to be on alert for home repair con artists looking to exploit homeowners and local businesses needing repairs due to storm-related damage. Madigan cautioned Illinois residents that scammers may quickly move into communities hit hard by storms to take advantage of people with damage to their homes. Madigan noted that these “storm chasers” use the opportunity to pressure people into making impulsive, and often expensive, decisions about cleanup and construction work. Investigators with Madigan’s office are working with officials in Cameron, IL and will be looking into complaints about contractors operating in the recently impacted areas. Contractors interested in working in Cameron must register
at the Illinois Department of Transportation yard in nearby Monmouth, located at 710 180th Ave. Investigators will also be on hand in Watseka to provide assistance to local officials. Madigan encouraged local residents and business owners to call local law enforcement agencies and her office’s Consumer Fraud Hotline (1-800386-5438) to report any suspicious activity. “These communities face a long recovery process,” Madigan said. “Unfortunately, there are individuals who will attempt to profit from the devastation left by the storms. I encourage residents to be on the alert for scammers trying to take advantage of them.” Madigan offered the following tips to help protect families and businesses from dishonest contractors: Be wary of contractors who go door to door to offer repair
services. Ask for recommendations from people you know and trust and, whenever possible, use established local contractors. Call the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline to check out a contractor and to learn if any complaints have been filed against a particular business. Even if there is a need to act quickly, shop around for the best deal. Get written estimates from multiple contractors, and don’t be rushed into a deal. Get all of the terms of a contract in writing, and obtain a copy of the signed contract. Never make full payment until all the work has been completed to your satisfaction. Never pay in cash. Be aware that you have the right to cancel a contract within three business days if you signed it based on the contractor’s visit to your home. In the case of disaster repair,
you have an additional right to cancel. If your insurance carrier denies coverage, you have the right to cancel the contract within five days of when your insurance carrier denies your coverage. Ask to see required state and local permits and licenses. Insurance adjusters and roofers must be licensed by state agencies. If the contractor does not have a required license, or if the name on the license doesn’t match the name on the contractor’s business card or truck, that should raise a red flag. Madigan also reminded consumers that the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act requires contractors to furnish
customers with written contracts for any repair or remodeling work costing more than $1,000. A contract must be signed by both the customer and the contractor. The law also requires contractors to carry at least minimum amounts of insurance for property damage, bodily injury and improper home repair. Contractors also must provide consumers with an informational pamphlet entitled “Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights.” Madigan urged homeowners to contact her Consumer Fraud Hotlines to report being victimized by a home repair scheme or to learn tips for finding a reputable contractor.

Bustos anti-waste effort passes committee, now goes to full house for consideration WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) announced that her bipartisan, bicameral effort to end improper federal payments and cut down on waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government and save billions of taxpayer dollars passed the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform unanimously. In May, Bustos joined with Congressman Mick Mulvaney (SC-5) to introduce the Federal Improper Payments Coordination Act of 2015, H.R.2320, which would improve existing programs, requirements and procedures established to identify and
prevent improper federal payments. With today’s House Committee passage, the bill now goes to the full House for consideration. Each year, agencies across the federal government pay bil-
lions in improper payments in error or due to fraud. According to the Office of Management and Budget, federal agencies made an estimated $125

FROM LENA’S KITCHEN The not so skinny cook
It has been hot and humid— good weather for our crops and gardens to grow. I have one lone tomato on my potted plant—lots of grape ones. I think the potted one got too much rain water, and it never recovered. One of my friends gave me some home grown tomatoes, and I had my first bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. It tasted so good! There is nothing like home-grown red tomatoes in flavor. Because of the heat, today there are some recipes that don’t require much prep or stove and oven time. (Of course, there is one that requires baking, but the end result is worth it!) Enjoy some garden fresh recipes in this week’s column. Everybody seems to be eating buffalo chicken dip this year. This recipe is an easy one because you use rotisserie chicken. If you use the Tostado scoops and the celery sticks, you don’t even get your fingers dirty. However, this dip is finger licking good!
Buffalo Chicken Dip
¼ C. sliced green onions ½ t. celery seed 1 T. unsalted butter 4 oz. cream cheese, cubed and softened ¼ C. ranch dressing ¼ C. hot sauce 1½ C. chopped rotisserie chicken 1 C. shredded Monterey Jack cheese ½ C. shredded Cheddar Sliced green onions, blue cheese crumbles, celery sticks and corn chips Preheat the oven to 350. Sweat green onions and celery seed in butter in a saucepan over medium heat until onions soften. (Remember last week, we talked about the difference between sweating vegetables and sautéing vegetables.) In a food processes, mix the cream cheese, ranch dressing, hot sauce, and onions until mixed completely. Transfer to a bowl. Stir in chicken and cheeses. Place in a 1 qt. flat baking dish which has been sprayed with cooking spray and spread evenly. Bake until
hot and bubbly, about 25-30 minutes. Garnish with green onions and crumbles; serve with celery sticks and corn chips. The University of Illinois Extension recipe of the week combines garden cabbage and Kohlrabi into a great and unique slaw. The original recipe calls for Savoy cabbage, but regular garden cabbage will work just fine. Stop by the Farmer’s Market and get your cabbage supply. The second recipe is for Kale and cucumbers which are also available at the Farmer’s Market. Enjoy this fresh and healthy kale salad.
Cabbage-Kohlrabi Slaw
1 medium kohlrabi ½ lemon, juiced ¼ C. dill, chopped ½ clove garlic, minced 1 t. Dijon mustard Salt and pepper, to taste 3 T. olive oil ¼ C. cabbage shredded Peel the kohlrabi and cut into matchsticks. Set aside. Whisk the juice of ½ lemon, chopped dill, minced garlic, Dijon mustard, and salt and pepper together in a bowl. Whisk in olive oil. Toss with kohlrabi and shredded cabbage. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately or chilled.
Kale Chicken Salad with Carrot Cucumber Dressing
1 C. shredded Brussels sprouts 1 C. torn kale leaves ½ C. radish matchsticks 1 carrot 1 cucumber 4 T. rice vinegar 4 T. fresh lemon juice 2 t. extra-virgin olive oil 1 orange, peeled and cut into pieces 2 cooked boneless, skinless chicken breasts chopped In a large bowl, combine Brussels sprouts, kale and radishes. Toss to combine. In a food processor, combine the carrot and cucumber and pulse until finely chopped. With motor running, add the rice vinegar, lemon juice, and olive oil. Process for about 1 minute until dressing is well combined. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss. Top with orange pieces and chopped chicken. There is fresh sweet corn being sold from stands all over. This time of the year is the best for corn. This next recipe
jazzes the sweet corn up. It also removes it from the ears to combine it; those of you who don’t want the mess of corn on the cob, this recipe will give you the same great flavor without the mess.
Southwestern Sautéed Corn
1 T. unsalted butter 3½ C. fresh corn 1 plum tomato, chopped 1 T. lime juice ½ t. salt ½ t. ground cumin 1/3 C. minced fresh cilantro In a large nonstick skillet, heat the butter over mediumhigh heat. Add the corn and cook and stir 3-4 minutes or until tender. Reduce the heat to medium-low; stir in the tomato, lime juice, salt and cumin. Cook 3-4 minutes longer or until heated through. Remove from heat and stir in the cilantro. Need a fast and easy dinner recipe that is cool to make? This stir-fry is a good one for you. It has broccoli and rice, so a salad is all you need. The whole process can be cooked in less than 15 minutes.
Beef Broccoli Stir-Fry
3 T. cornstarch, divided ½ C. plus 2 T. water, divided ½ t. garlic powder 1 lb. boneless round steak, cut into thin 3-inch strips 2 T. oil, divided 4 C. broccoli florets 1 small onion, cut into wedges 1/3 C. soy sauce 2 T. brown sugar 1 t. ground ginger Hot cooked rice In a bowl, combine 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons water and garlic powder until smooth. Add beef and toss. In a large skillet, over medium high heat, stirfry the beef in 1 tablespoon oil until beef is done to your taste. Remove the meat and keep warm. Stir-fry the broccoli and onion in remaining oil for 405

Have a great taste of raspberries with this delicious cake.
Raspberry Cake
5 C. fresh raspberries 1 C. sugar 1 pkg. (3 oz.) Raspberry Flavor Jell-O 3 C. miniature marshmallows 1 pkg. (2-layer) white cake mix 2 C. thawed Cool Whip topping Preheat the oven to 350. Spread raspberries onto the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan which has been sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle with sugar, dry gelatin mix and marshmallows. Prepare the cake batter as directed on the package; pour over the marshmallows. Bake 1 hour or until the toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely. Serve

Fair season comes to a close after next week at Warren, and the State Fair is up next. I think sports teams will be getting ready to practice. Summer is on its downslide. Barb Wire mentioned to me that people are missing out on some great entertainment and ministry by not coming to Lake LeAqua-Na’s Saturday evening worship service. There have been some great music, so if you are looking for something fun and inspirational on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m., go out to the lake. The Farmer’s Market had to move this past week because of the downtown construction. I liked it at the Citizen’s Bank parking lot—easier to get in and out of. There were lots of great vegetables and even some apples. Don’t forget to support our local Farmer’s Markets on Saturday mornings. Illinois Congressional Delegation asks President Obama to issue disaster declaration WASHINGTON D.C. — Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL17) and the other members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation sent a letter to President Obama July 24 asking him to issue a Secretarial Disaster Declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for Illinois counties impacted by heavy rainfall. This would allow farmers in the region severely impacted by flooding to receive low interest emergency USDA loans. Today’s delegation letter comes in support of Illinois Gov-
ernor Bruce Rauner’s request letter to Secretary Vilsack – sent on Thursday – which cited reports from the Illinois Farm Services Agency of extensive water damage to corn and soybean fields and low projected crop yields. “Since June 1, excessive rainfall has caused significant damage to Illinois’ crops,” the Members wrote. “On behalf of affected Illinois farmers, we respectfully request that you issue a Secretarial Disaster Declaration and that USDA disaster loans and emergency funding be offered to eligible counties that

PASTOR’S CORNER Wisdom…. or Lack of It?

LENA — Proverbs 2:1-5 “ My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding - indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver, and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Last week one of my brothers and I took our families for a mini vacation to St. Louis. While we had planned some cool activities, the highlight for our children each day was found in the hotel pool. As parents we regularly fielded the question, “When can we go swimming?” Late one evening, we took the kids down for a short swim forty five minutes before the pool closed. What we found was a rowdy bunch of teenagers, loud shouts, arguments, tipped over pool furniture and careless behaviour that could possibly endanger other swimmers. Our pool time was cut short that evening. When we returned the next day, the pool was closed and it remained closed for the rest of our stay. Apparently someone had thrown many handfuls of gravel into the pool, which was subsequently sucked up into the pool’s filter system. While we didn’t see this actually occur, I’m reasonably confident I know what took place. Ninety five degree weather and eighty five per cent humidity made that pool a nice place to hang out. Those young adults demonstrated a complete lack of foresight, embodied the opposite of wisdom, and applied little understanding of the future consequences related to their actions. Adult guests all over that hotel ended up dealing with disappointed children. While Solomon’s words certainly applied in that situation, they can apply in a much broader way to our families and our culture. Increasingly our leaders, whether it be leaders in the family, or leaders of our

nation, are failing to turn their ears to the wisdom that comes from the knowledge of God. Nationally we have applauded efforts to redefine God’s institution of marriage. We have turned a deaf ear to the cries of thousands aborted children. We have allowed a bankrupt policy of political correctness to stifle the impact of Christian people seeking to live, speak, and act according to God’s direction. In some cases, family leaders have failed to expose their children to God’s Word. We have failed to consistently make worship one of our top priorities. We have been inconsistent in our own faith life and, therefore; we are raising children confused about their relationship with God. These decisions remind me of the short sighted, self-focused teens in the story above. Teens who had little ability to think through the future outcome of the decisions they were currently making. Whether it be on the Supreme Court or our own home court, what will be the implications of failing to turn our hearts to understanding and our ears to His wisdom. Fortunately, Solomon reminds us that all we need to do is act. Reach out to God in His Word. Call out for insight and pray earnestly for understanding. If we pursue relationship to God with the same passion we would use if we were in search of hidden treasure, then he reassures us we will come to a much deeper understanding and knowledge of God in our lives, an understanding that begins with the great love Christ showed to us on a simple cross. I would bet that you would find that even more satisfying than sitting by a pool on a hot summer day.

While in Pine Ridge, the team will help with service projects and a children’s ministry, learn from the Lakota people, share the love of Jesus in word and action, and will bring offerings donated from the Lena community. The team has been collecting bicycles, diapers, tools, pillar candles, quilts, and gift cards (Walmart, Family Dollar, Shell, and Sinclair) to bring to those in need in Pine Ridge. The team asks for prayer support for the week ahead.

MONROE, Wis. — With school athletics, summer leagues and athletic camps coming up, it’s time for students to get a pre-participation screening. These screenings help address any health issues or injuries that could be corrected during the summer months in preparation for the next sports season. Monroe Clinic-Lena will host pre-participation screenings on Wednesday, July 29 from 1:30-4:30 p.m.. To schedule a screening, call 815-369-4541. The cost is $20 cash, credit or check payable at time of screening. Insurance is not billed. Pre-participation screenings do not replace complete physicals. To fully address adolescent health issues, incoming ninth grade students are not eligible to receive a pre-participation screening and should receive a full school physical. The American Academy of Pediatrics and The American Academy of Family Physicians recommend that children and adolescents receive a routine health exam every two years after kindergarten. There are also a variety of state and school requirements for routine and sports physicals.

AG Madigan calls on phone carriers to offer call-blocking technology CHICAGO — Attorney General Lisa Madigan today called on five major phone companies to offer call-blocking technology to their customers. In a joint letter to the chief executives of the carriers, Madigan and 43 other state attorneys general highlighted a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule clarification that allows the phone companies to offer customers the ability to block unwanted calls. The clarification also verifies that federal law does not prohibit
offering the services. In the letter to AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and CenturyLink, the attorneys general stated, “Every year, our offices are flooded with consumer complaints pleading for a solution to stop intrusive robocalls. Your companies are now poised to offer your customers the help they need. We urge you to act without delay.” Despite coordinated efforts by Madigan’s office, other state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission

These two individuals should be commended for their academic and personal achievements and experiences in 4-H, school, places of employment, volunteer groups, community service activities, and committees. The 2015 recipients are Malia Spellman of Freeport and Joseph Werkheiser of Lena. Malia is a 2015 graduate of Freeport High School and the daughter of Mark and Amy Spellman of Freeport. She has one brother, is a member of the Freeport Firecrackers 4-H Club and has participated in 4-H for 7 years. “I have learned to put other people’s needs before my own and will miss meeting people through 4-H” says Spellman. “Being the 4-H Camp photographer for two years is one of my favorite memories.” Spellman plans to attend Highland Community College in the fall for one year and then transfer to the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design to pursue a career in photography and open her own business. Malia’s favorites include sushi, photography, listening to rap music, going to Chicago Blackhawks games and watching The Breakfast Club movie. Malia plans to stay involved with 4-H through volunteering at events. Joe is a 2015 graduate of Lena-Winslow High School and the son of Jon and Ruth Werkheiser of Lena. (FTC), Illinois residents continue to report robocalls to their homes, even when residents have placed their numbers on the FTC’s “Do Not Call” registry. The calls frequently originate from scammers in foreign countries, using technology to hide their location and identity, which makes enforcement efforts against them difficult. In response to this problem, phone carriers had previously claimed they could not offer call-blocking services. At a July 2013 hearing before a Senate subcommittee, representatives from the US Telecom Association and the Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) testified that “legal barriers prevent carriers from implementing advanced call-blocking technology to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls.” “The FCC has now made it clear that phone companies can help consumers avoid these unwanted, annoying, and sometimes expensive calls,” Madigan said. “We will continue to press these phone carriers to give their customers what they have been asking for – a way to stop these calls before they ever come through.” Madigan said call-blocking options already exist for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service (NoMoRobo. com) and Android cell phones (Call Control), and the phone carriers should move quickly to implement and inform their consumers of these options. Last September, Madigan and 38 attorneys general called on the FCC to allow phone companies to utilize call-blocking technologies. The FCC chairman endorsed the request in late May, and the FCC voted to pass the rule clarification on June 18. Joining Madigan in signing today’s letter are the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York,

The Winslow Historical Society and the American Legion of Winslow will host Winslow Antique Days August 7-8.
WINSLOW — If there isn’t something for everyone at Winslow’s upcoming Winslow Antique Days, there certainly should be enough food to, well, to coin a cliché, feed an army. The two-day celeb ration kicks off Friday, Aug. 7, at noon when the flea market opens in downtown Winslow. Ken Burma should be contact regarding questions about the market. A community ice cream social runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, featuring homemade ice cream, barbecues, macaroni salad, chips, baked beans, pie, and cake. The Prairie Thunder Cloggers will perform at 7:30 p.m. Activities are at 606 Bridge Street, Winslow, right in front of the historical museum, which will be open both days. A military field kitchen will be used to prepare the Saturday breakfast, which runs from 7 to 10 a.m. Featured will be biscuits and gravy, sausage links, scrambled eggs, applesauce, and drinks. Advance tickets are $7 each and may be purchased at Community Bank in Winslow. Tickets at the breakfast are $8.00 each. These screenings help address any health issues or injuries that could be corrected during the summer months in preparation for the next sports season. Monroe Clinic-Orangeville will host pre-participation screenings on Tuesday, July 28 from 5-6:30 p.m.. No appointment needed. The cost is $20 cash, credit or check payable at time of screening. Insurance is not billed.
