THE CURE FOR
Cabin fever WINTER ACTIVITIES OFFER THE ANTIDOTE FOR SEASONAL BLUES
There’s only one way to cure cabin fever in the midst of a cold Wisconsin Winter – get outside! Whether an outdoor sports enthusiast or someone who just prefers to take in the sights, sounds and beauty of a crisp winter’s day, residents and visitors alike find the area is the perfect place to be. Here’s a quick look at some of the outdoor recreational options in the area:
Alpine Valley Resort near East Troy, Grand Geneva Resort’s Mountain Top in Lake Geneva or Wilmot Mountain offer challenging runs for seasoned skiers as well as lessons for beginners. For those who would like to try their skill at snowboarding, both resorts offer lessons and rent equipment so you can conquer the slopes in a whole new way. The area also offers exceptional venues for cross country skiing. Skate and classic SKIING stride skiers flock to the county for its Blanketed in snow, the area’s ski hills are miles of groomed trails at Big Foot Beach groomed and ready for a day or evening of State Park located on the southeast shore of downhill adventure. SLEDDING
Great sledding and tobogganing can be found at sledding hills in Lake Geneva at Sage and Mill streets or in Delavan at the Rudy Lange Sledding Hill on Terrace Street. YMCA Camp MacLean in Burlington offers a toboggan run that’s open to the public on Sundays. SKATING
Itching to lace up a pair of ice skates? Once the temperatures plummet for good, ice rinks in area communities will open, including the Library Park Rink in Lake Geneva, Rotary Ice Rink in Walworth and the Veteran’s Memorial Park Rink in Delavan. The area’s resorts, including Lake Lawn, The Abbey, Geneva Ridge and Grand Geneva also have their own rinks and offer skate rentals for a minimal fee.
SNOWSHOEING and HIKING
Places to snowshoe and hike are also abundant throughout the county. Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Williams Bay features more than four miles of trails that wind through a 230-acre haven for birds and wildlife. In the northern part of the county, visitors can find great trails at Price Park north of Elkhorn or Natureland Park south of Whitewater.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
There are other fun, and perhaps a bit more sedate ways, to enjoy the beauty of the season. Take in the sights via a sleigh ride or carriage ride at Dan Patch Stables located at Grand Geneva Resort. Or, if looking for a little more adventure, schedule a trail ride on horseback through the resort’s property. nowmobiling has been a longtime fun-filled Wisconsin winter activity. It can bring family and friends together for lifelong memories of riding along the pristine trails of Wisconsin. It is important when looking for a snowmobile to find one that’s right for you and your needs, according to the experts at A+ Power Sports, Elkhorn. With so many models to choose from it can be an
e d ri
overwhelming task. Here are some tips from A+ to remember when deciding your next ride: • Will you be riding by yourself or will you have a passenger? Most snowmobiles are meant for one person only and will not have much room if you want to carry a passenger. A two-up or touring model will haul another person whether it’s a child or adult. • Is the snowmobile for a first-time driver? Anyone older than 12 is eligible to apply and get a Wisconsin

Department of Natural Resources Safety Certificate to drive a snowmobile. • Most snowmobiles are similar size and weight and the differences primarily are in the horsepower of the motor. There are snowmobiles that range from 340cc up to 1100cc and, based upon riding skills, some snowmobiles may go too fast and the operator would be safer in a smaller engine machine. • There are snowmobiles out there for everyone and most can fit into almost any budget. If you are a first-time owner and have a smaller budget there are plenty of good pre-owned snowmobiles available. Buying from a dealer helps ensure the used snowmobile has been inspected and is in good working condition. This will help with keeping additional repairs to a minimum. • If you have been an avid rider and enjoy going fast, your next sled may be a new, faster model.
• There are many accessories riders can add to give a snowmobile an original look. Studs can be added for better traction, stopping and better control in icy corners. Higher windshields give riders more protection from the cold. See your local dealer for what additional accessories you can add for your needs. • Getting the young riders started is easy with the purchase of a 120 snowmobile that goes slower speeds and gives young riders an opportunity to learn safe riding techniques. • There are many great dealerships in Walworth County to help riders decide on the snowmobile that best fits their needs. The dealers have the knowledge and all the gear riders need to keep warm when out on the trail. • There are 14 snowmobile clubs within the Walworth County Snowmobile Alliance including a youth snowmobile club, the Sledheadz, open for ages 12 thru 20. So join the fun and don’t let winter keep you indoors.

The Grandview Restaurant at the Geneva Inn will undergo renovations beginning in February to make the most of its views of Geneva Lake. The work is slated for completion in May.

RESTAURANT IS SLATED TO REOPEN IN MAY
The owners of The Geneva Inn, N2009 S. Lake Shore Drive, Lake Geneva, will begin a major renovation of the resort’s restaurant and lounge this month. The project is expected to be completed by the end of May in time for the busy summer season. The restaurant will be closed during renovations and will have limited weekend service only through Sunday. Limited weekend service includes lunch and dinner on Fridays; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturdays; and brunch on Sundays. The hotel remains open for overnight SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
guests. The inn’s website is GenevaInn.com and the phone number is (800) 441-5881. Sean Skellie, a vice president with IDM Hospitality Management, the group that has been managing the hotel since 2015, said the news is significant and positive. “Drawing on our resort and culinary experience and the expertise of top-notch project leaders, we’re mapping out a dining experience to wow guests with great food and, of course, that great lake view,” Skellie said. He said diners’ knowledge of fine food and good wine is at an all time high,

particularly in a resort community like Lake Geneva, with guests and residents seeking out upscale experiences and menu items to match, but they still want the atmosphere to be casual and inviting. The redesigned restaurant will feature seating areas that allow unobstructed views of the lake. “We all treasure the lake and want to share that beauty with diners,” Skellie said. The evening menu will showcase fresh seafood and steaks with a wine cellar to complement the cuisine. Skellie said it will be fine dining but not fussy dining. Managers are also considering continued food and wine dinners and other culinary events hosted monthly at the restaurant. A different menu will be served on the patio with a premium sandwich selection and specialty summer beverages. The idea is

to take vacationers’ favorite summer fare and dial it up a notch, Skellie said. “We want this to be a destination dining place, a place where lake strollers and guests of the Inn can indulge in some delicious classic food while taking in a fireside sunset,” he said. A private dining area and renovated banquet spaces are also included in the construction plan. “In a town with lots of terrific dining choices, it will take creativity and determination to be the premier place to dine but that’s definitely the bar we’ve set for ourselves,” said Susan Lorr, general manager of The Geneva Inn. The Geneva Inn is on the southeast shore of Geneva Lake. It was built in 1990 on the same spot where a lodge or resort has stood since 1883. Today’s Geneva Inn has 37 guestrooms and

Cove of Lake Geneva will upgrade hallways Interior upgrades, including a redesign of some 40,000 feet of corridor space, are planned at the 222-suite Cove of Lake Geneva hotel in the city’s downtown. Echoing a contemporary beach theme, the hotel’s hallways will be painted a light sandy taupe and accented by a multi-tone graphic carpet in waves of watery blue gradients, according to Sue Govier, Director of Interior Design at Architectural Design Consultants, Inc., the Madisonbased firm behind the Cove’s remodeling plans. Govier said guests will appreciate new double-lamp sconces to brightly illuminate corridors, freshly carpeted stairways, and vestibules lined with striated tile. Remodeling began in December and is slated for completion March 1 – just in time for the arrival of spring break vacationers. “The Cove is about as close as you can get to Geneva Lake without owning a lakeshore
residence – and every room is a suite with a fireplace, kitchen and separate bedroom,” said General Manager Todd Baior. “As a result, the hotel is a popular choice for families, weddings and business meetings. However, to maintain our standing requires continually revaluating and reinvesting in the property.” Baior said the hotel’s owners are also looking to upgrade the lobby in the near future as well. In addition to the suites, the hotel offers two outdoor swimming pools – including a zero-depth-entry area – poolside dining, Tiki Bar and private cabana rentals. Indoor amenities include a Colectivo coffee bar, game room, indoor swimming pool, sauna, Sprecher’s Restaurant and four meeting rooms totaling 6,600-square feet of event space for wedding receptions, corporate retreats and other formal gatherings.

fashions, bridal gowns change over the years. In the 1960s, bridal gowns had long sleeves and often skirts that were full with a wire hoop worn underneath to hold the skirt out, much like the heroines in the movie “Gone With the Wind.” By the 1990s, the higher necklines and long sleeves made way for more open looks, and, by 2000, strapless gowns were seen at many weddings. Today, according to Germaine, two of the most popular styles are the mermaid and the trumpet gowns. Mermaid gowns are tight fitting, adhere to the body’s silhouette and might flounce out at the bottom. Trumpet gowns fall loose from about mid thigh and can be thought of as a hybrid between a mermaid gown and an A-line silhouette. The trumpet dress’ skirt resembles the shape of the trumpet’s bell. While mermaid and trumpet styles are popular, Germaine encourages brides to keep an open mind. “Be willing to try many different styles,”

she said. “You may find that the one you fall in love with is not the style you thought you would love.”
Make it your own
While strapless gowns are still very popular, straps are coming back and can be added to any gown. Alterations can add details to any dress to personalize it. One of the changes is the addition of crystal-like buttons sewn on the back of a gown to replace the satin buttons. “Sometimes we increase the back buttons all the way down the back of the dress for a very striking look,” Germaine said. Germaine said she is able to redesign any dress to make it become the dress of any bride’s dreams by adding sleeves, lace or other embellishments such as jewels. While traditionally wedding gowns were white, today there are other choices. “Offwhite gowns and ivory gowns are popular, maybe more so than the traditional pure white,” she said. “Blush-colored gowns are

“Today the comb that adheres the veil to the hair is attached to the veiling itself so it can be removed during the reception, but the headpiece can remain on, retaining the bridal look,” Germaine said. “There is a large selection of headpieces to complement any dress in both the traditional silver or the gold toned that works especially well with the blush-colored dresses.” Weddings are not always held in churches. Many are held outdoors, at the lakeside, on a golf course, in a park or on a farm. Theme weddings are a popular way to celebrate. A bride might want burlap wrapped in with her flowers for a country wedding and might carry that theme through to her headpiece to fit the barn décor. Whatever the theme, Germaine’s has accessories that can bring it to life. Germaine displayed a pair of handheld jeweled masks that are popular for weddings with a masquerade or Mardi Gras theme. Often brides-to-be find choosing their

also making their way into the list of favorites because of their unique color. A very popular look is an ivory colored layer over the blush layer, giving a bit of color but still maintaining the white bridal look. This provides a new and unique look and adds a touch of color.” One of the challenges for the maid of honor has always been to take the long train and bustle it up at the wedding reception so that it is not trailing all over the floor. There are now several ways to bustle the gown that can be easily tied together, giving the bustle a different look and an easy tie-up for the maid of honor.

bridal gown stressful. “It should not be stressful,” Germaine said. “Make an appointment for a time when you can be relaxed and not trying to hurry to just get it done. Often a mistake made is to bring a large entourage of family and friends to pick out the dress. This often leads to confusion with too many different opinions and each friend trying to convince the bride to choose her favorite.”
Mothers welcome
The mother of the bride often accompanies her daughter to choose the wedding gown. Of course mothers and daughters often have different opinions and different styles. Germaine advises trying on gowns in styles to appeal to both of you. Mom will see the bride in the dress she dreams of and also the one the daughter dreams of. Either one might change her mind when she sees the dresses being worn. “It is easy to tell when the bride finds the dress of her dreams,” Germaine said.

“Her eyes tell the story. Often I know what dress she will choose before she does. Nothing is worse than a bride taking a dress to please her mother or grandmother and not having it be the dress of her dreams.” The groom also needs to find the perfect tuxedo that meets his style and compliments the colors and styles of the wedding party. The tuxedo rental space is on the second floor of Germaine’s with its own entrance. A complete line of styles from classic to the latest trends make choosing the perfect tuxedo easy. Measurements are taken and individual pieces of the tuxedo are tried on to ensure fit. Today’s tuxedos are not just black. Germaine said charcoal gray is one of the most popular colors for wedding tuxedos.
Options for bridesmaids
In the past, wedding parties often had a monochromatic look with all the girls wearing the same dress in the same color regardless of their hair or skin color, height or weight. Today wedding parties often have a more eclectic look. Brides- and grooms-to-be are often nervous when the day they will tie the knot finally arrives. The realization that months and months of planning and anticipation are finally about to come to a head often inspires some jitters in the days leading up to the wedding. But the following are a few ways couples can calm those nerves in the hours leading up to the moment they have devoted so much time and effort to planning since becoming engaged.
E DD
How to calm last-minute jitters Get a good night’s rest
Couples should prioritize a good night’s sleep the night before they are set to walk down the aisle. Make your last night as an unmarried couple an early night so you will look your best and have plenty of energy on your big day, which will no doubt start early and end late.
Spend time with family and friends Chances are your closest friends and family members are playing significant roles in your wedding, and spending time with them is a great way to keep your nerves in check while having a fun time before, during and after the ceremony. SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Spirit of Geneva Lakes
Don’t be afraid to delegate responsibilities In spite of months of planning, couples will still have a to-do list come their wedding days. If such a list is overwhelming, brides- and grooms-to-be should not be afraid to delegate some of the tasks on their lists. Bridesmaids and groomsmen can no doubt handle any outstanding tasks that don’t require any input from the bride or groom.
Relax as the ceremony draws nearer As the start time for the ceremony approaches, couples about to tie the knot should take time to sit down and relax. (METRO CREATIVE) This trumpet-style dress has a cascading train with lace edges.
bridesmaids’ dresses are more fashionable and able to be worn to a fancy dinner dance without looking like an old bridal attendant’s dress. Dresses for the mothers of the bride and the groom are highly styled and come in a variety of colors. Favorites are navy, plum or eggplant and gray. Germaine’s carries dresses on site and can order them. Mother of the bride and groom dresses can be simply elegant or highly embellished with whatever suits the style of the mother and fits with the style of the wedding. Germaine recommends ordering wedding dresses at least eight months before the wedding date. Most of the dresses are imported from China, Spain or Australia and are not manufactured until orders are received. Germaine can order from any of the major manufacturers, so even if a dress is not in the shop it can be ordered. “Try on as many styles as possible,” Germaine said. “That is the only way you will be sure to have the best gown for you.”

TIPS TO PUT A UNIQUE STAMP ON YOUR WEDDING Weddings are steeped in tradition – no matter whom you are or where you live. But what if you’re not interested in wearing the same dress your mother did, getting married in the same location your sister did or wearing something blue? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Plenty of brides search for ways to make their special day as unique as they are. Here are five ways to put your own special spin on this classic tradition. A guest book you’ll use Signing the guest book is a common tradition at most weddings; you’ve probably signed a few in your lifetime. After the wedding is over, however, this priceless keepsake often disappears into a box never to be seen again. Break from tradition by creating a guest book you’ll actually use. Take a trip to the bookstore with your partner and browse the coffee table books. Once you find one that interests both of you, claim it as your guest book. Your wedding guests can sign their

Dance under the stars Looking to create a one-of-a-kind wedding? Don’t rent the same ballroom as all of your friends. Host your reception outdoors. You can rent a dance floor from a local rental facility and trained technicians will arrive to set it up easily. You’ll dance on a traditional wood floor while looking up at the stars – what could be more original than that? Don’t forget to rent a tent so that weather doesn’t dampen the mood. You can find more unique flooring ideas at RentalHQ.com, where you can locate your local rental store.
Prepare a menu that is uniquely you Chocolate fountains were once unique and elegant, but now they’re commonplace. Don’t despair, though, because there are plenty of unique edible snack options you can include in your special day. If you’re getting married in the blistering heat, rent a snow cone machine to offer your guests some sweet relief. If you and your spouse are big movie buffs or your wedding has a Hollywood theme, rent a popcorn machine to complete the look. And for the bride who’s still a kid at heart, nothing captures that better than renting an authentic cotton candy machine.
Treasure the memories Get your guests involved in the event by placing blank cards and pens at each seat location. Ask your guests to write about their favorite memory of you and/or your spouse. Collect all of these cards and

Questions to ask before hiring your wedding photographer Some moments are simply too important to trust to a camera phone. Your wedding will be one of the most memorable times of your life and no one can capture it better than a professional photographer. So how do you find the right one? As you begin the interview process, here are 10 questions to help you determine if you’ve found the best photographer for your wedding.
1 Does the photographer have a gallery of wedding images you can review? Reviewing sample work allows you to see the photographer’s strengths and weaknesses – don’t fool yourself, every photographer has them. You’ll also be able to get an idea of their style. Are they formal with an eye for the perfect picture or do they love to capture the hidden moments when no one is looking? Look for images that you can see yourself in. Think of three words that describe you and share those with your photographer. Every photographer has a style and reviewing their gallery can help you de termine if theirs is right for you.
2 What is the photographer’s working style? Some photographers are orderly and operate like wedding planners.

priceless images together before you get married. It’s also your first opportunity to work with your photographer and develop a relationship that will allow you to be completely at ease on your big day. Use this session to confirm if the photographer is indeed the right person to capture your wedding.
Some photographers are orderly and operate like wedding planners. Others prefer to sit back and let the events of the wedding unfold. It’s important that you find someone who can understand and meet your expectations.”
4 Will the photographer create a detailed shot list? This list will ensure no important photo is missed during the commotion and excitement of the big day. You should be able to create that list together, add to the list leading up to the day and have a copy of that list the day of. Take an honest look at what images really matter and fill your photographer in on situations he or she might need to be aware of in order to prevent awkward moments, and to ensure that he or she can get the shots that matter most.
5 What kind of lighting will be used?
Others prefer to sit back and let the events of the wedding unfold. It’s important that you find someone who can understand and meet your expectations. Discuss this ahead of time and ask away, so that you understand how well the photographer’s working style matches your own.
Whether you have an indoor or outdoor wedding, you’ll want to make sure your photographer has professional grade lighting equipment to deliver the images your wedding deserves.
3 Is the photographer available for an engagement session?
6 Does the photographer have backup equipment?
An engagement session does more than provide you with
You’ve prepared contingency plans for every other aspect of your wedding; your photographer should as well. A true professional photographer won’t miss your perfect shot because of a technology issue. He or she will always bring one or two backup cameras, lenses, flashes, additional lighting equipment, extra memory cards, and batteries.

Finding the right photographer who will capture your wedding in all its unique style and color is key to preserving lasting memories, according to wedding experts. Couples are advised to seek an experienced professional.
7 Does the photographer have liability insurance? Accidents happen at weddings and if one of your guests trips over your photographer’s light stand, it’s good to know you both are protected. Your reception venue may even ask the photographer to submit a certificate of liability ahead of time.
8 Will there be one photographer or two? A second shooter increases the probability that no shot will be missed, especially if you are having a large wedding. If there will be two photographers, ask to meet them both to get a feel for their personalities and how well they might blend in on your big day.
9 What will happen to the images after your wedding? Will your images be backed up to a hard drive or the cloud once processed? How long will your photographer keep the images afterward? Will they be kept for a couple of years or dumped
immediately? If you have any concerns about losing your photos, knowing what the photographer plans to do with your images after your wedding is important.
10 When will you get your photos? No, you won’t get your pictures the day after; no photographer can deliver that quickly. It’s a good idea, though, to get a general idea of the timeline ahead of time. You might even be able to agree on getting a couple of images ready for social media use very quickly. But obtaining your photos will likely take several weeks. To help with the wait, some photographers will send you a sneak peak with a few images. Just ask ahead of time. You won’t be able to see everything that happens during your wedding day. The right photographer will capture moments you never knew existed. Lake Geneva’s Largest Liquor Store!
The timing of when a couple cuts the wedding cake can have a specific meaning. Long ago, the cake was usually cut at the very end of the reception and would signal to the guests that it was the end of the festivities. Today, cutting the cake is an unspoken signal that represents that the formal wedding is nearing a close, and guests who would like to leave can do so without worry of being rude. Many couples will cut the cake right after dinner as a courtesy to older guests who may want to get started on their trips home. This affords them the chance to make an earlier exit, rather than staying through the dancing that could extend into the wee hours of the night or missing the cake entirely. Cutting the cake mid-reception also serves another practical purpose for couples who are paying a photographer by the hour. Photographers typically go home after the cake cutting, so a mid-reception cutting can save couples a substantial amount of money.

According to wedding planners, today’s weddings cater to people of various culinary tastes. Couples and their guests expect more upscale and creative cuisine to be rolled out for receptions.
Wedding table A look at the latest options in wedding cuisine
Once a couple has officially tied the knot, the newly recognized man and wife and all of their guests will retire to a party room where they can mingle, dance and enjoy a good meal. In the past, standard fare like prime rib and roasted chicken dominated wedding menus. But today’s weddings cater to people of various culinary tastes, and couples and their guests can expect more upscale and creative cuisine to be rolled out for wedding receptions. The following are a handful of the more popular trends with regard to wedding cuisine.
Miniature bites
Many people say good things come in small packages, and when it comes to miniature versions of favorite foods, they may be right.
SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
Instead of large meals that fill guests up fast, they can munch on smaller bites of their favorite dishes. How about a piece of meatloaf topped with whipped mashed potatoes? A cherry tomato with a small piece of mozzarella cheese makes a mini caprese salad. Turning favorite foods into bite-sized adventures can add a touch of whimsy to the reception.
Breakfast for dinner
Some couples are circumventing high price tags for their weddings by choosing to hold the festivities at less expensive times of day. Brunch-themed weddings are a big hit with those who would much rather dine on a stack of pancakes than a dish of pasta. Omelet stations,

croissants and a bevy of other breakfast table fare can be enjoyed any time of the day.
Dim sum
Dim sum allows guests to sample different foods without filling up. Carts of dumplings and other small plates of appetizers can be wheeled around so everyone can choose what they want and what they want to avoid.
Gourmet comfort food
People love familiar comfort foods, but now gourmet comfort foods are shaking up wedding receptions. Mac-andcheese with gouda and brie or chicken pot pie with a puffpastry crust are a few offerings that can add glamour to downhome cooking.
Portable Restroom & Sink Rental for Any Occasion Holding Tank Pumping Septic Tank Cleaning Prompt, Professional Service
Food with a show
Instead of passed foods or buffet stations, couples are opting to make food an experience for guests. An oyster bar with a chef serving fresh seafood or a dessert master whipping up flambé is a feast for the eyes and mouth.
Interesting buffet stations
Keep guests on their toes with various meal stations. A bountiful display of artisanal cheeses, fruits and breads will be a cheese lover’s dream. These stations also can be appetizing focal points around the room and ensure all guests get a bite of what they like best.

Food-forward wedding couples are offering guests mouthwatering appetizers matched with a cocktail. A slider and a craft beer or a dumpling and a shot of sake are examples of this trend.
Nontraditional ‘fake’ cakes
Instead of a multi-tiered cake or the cupcake fad that is starting to fizzle, couples are now opting for something new. Desserts that mimic the look of cake, but aren’t quite that combination of sponge and frosting are trending. Crepes, pies, cookies, and doughnuts are acceptable and can add a creative spark to the cake-cutting ceremony. When offered along with dessert stations, guests can certainly get their fill of sweet delights.
Vegan and gluten-free
options Chances are one or more people attending the reception will be on a restricted diet. Rather than relegate these guests to dining on side dishes and patchwork meals, certain couples are building entire offerings around vegan and gluten-free foods. Couples are getting creative with their food and beverage offerings at their weddings. Guests never know which culinary wonders they will encounter as they gather to wish the newlyweds well.
TIPS TO STREAMLINE EXPENSES Planning a wedding is complicated. Once couples choose a date and location for their ceremony, they can then can get down to the nuts and bolts of the big day. When planning a wedding, many couples are governed by a budget. One of the best ways for couples to stay within spitting distance of their budget or even come in under budget is to take steps to simplify the ceremony and reception. Simplifying a few aspects of the wedding can save couples money without forcing them to make sacrifices that affect the look or feel of occasion.
Floral arrangements as multi-purpose accessories
Couples can save a few dollars by repurposing floral bouquets and other floral arrangements used during the ceremony. Once the ceremony has ended, repurpose floral bouquets as centerpieces for the reception tables and turn flowers used as aisle markers during the ceremony into small centerpieces on the escort card table or place them alongside the guestbook. This saves the trouble of choosing various floral arrangements to display throughout the venue and also saves money.
Scale back on alcohol
Instead of a full top-shelf bar, offer guests one or two choices of popular liquors such as whiskey, rum and vodka and steer clear of especially expensive brands. The majority of guests likely won’t even notice, but couples will notice how much money they save.
Choose a classic cake
Instead of a specially designed, labor-intensive cake, choose a classic cake that won’t break the bank. Classic cakes can add an elegant touch to a wedding without extending a couple’s budget.
Trim the guest list
Trimming the guest list is arguably the most effective way to simplify a wedding while simultaneously saving money. Once you have compiled a list of potential invitees, peruse that list to determine if there are any people who can be trimmed from the list. This is easier for couples paying for their own wedding, as they won’t feel pressured to invite any friends or colleagues of their parents whom they don’t know personally. But even couples splitting the cost of their weddings with their parents should speak with their parents about trimming the guest list to make the affair a little less expensive.

Area facilities offer many options for seniors
by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Throughout a lifetime, change is inevitable. As people age, many of them might begin to think about different lifestyles that will diminish their responsibilities give them more time to enjoy life. For some, retirement might be near. Health issues and changes in family structure that result from death, divorce or children leaving the nest might lead to a search for a different life, free from many responsibilities. worry about their parents and their ability to cope with daily life as they age. So people begin to look for ways that will lead to an easier and safer way of life for their senior years. Today options are available for senior lifestyles and care that were not available 30 or 40 years ago when not as many seniors were around. The life expectancy for people born in 1900 was late 40s. More than 100 years later, that life expectancy has almost doubled to 80 years old with many people living to the

age of 100 or more. As a person ages, exercising the mind and body, eating regular, healthy meals and participating in social activities is important. However, many older people live alone and begin to develop symptoms of depression from a passive lifestyle and become lonely. This area has several senior facilities that can provide seniors with whatever level of care they need. Even seniors who are not ready to make a move might want to look at what is available so when they are ready to make the move for themselves or their parents, they are better prepared to make a decision. Here’s a look at some of the area’s options:

exercise classes and many other engaging activities make this a real community. Two separate buildings, The Highlands and The Terraces of Geneva Crossings, house the independent living apartments. The one- and two-bedroom apartments are open to seniors 55 years old or older who are independent. The complex has several floor plans to choose from. Living in the apartments gives residents the ability to have their own home and form community friendships. The independent senior will enjoy the beautiful and rich life available in Lake Geneva. Many attractions, shops and restaurants are within walking distance or a short ride away. Because this is independent living, no food is included in the rent. However, Monday through Friday a nutritious and affordable lunch is available at the Terraces. The lunch is open to the public, so residents often meet friends there for a lunch out. As added peace of mind, residents of the Terraces and Highlands are on a priority waiting list for Arbor Village should the need arise. Located just across the parking lot, Arbor Village is the assisted living residence where residents maintain their privacy, dignity and comfort and receive the help they need. Each unit is a private room with a sleeping alcove, sitting room and a large accessible bathroom. The rooms are furnished with items brought from home to help maintain an at-home feeling. The exterior of every unit in the building is distinct just as an individual home has its own look. Room numbers are posted just as street addresses are posted at home and the individual’s name is placed on a placard. A small mailbox is placed at each unit to receive mail. A false window with a small window box completes the look of a small cottage. Each resident decorates the window box to his or her taste. Administrator Andy Kerwin said compassion and caring make a difference in the residents’ lives. They are given three healthy meals a day and encouraged to participate in social and physical activities. Each day, activities are offered, and every day begins with a walk and a stretch for anyone interested. “We often see residents improve dramatically even after a short time here,” Kerwin said. “Many of them have been so isolated at home, they may not have been eating nutritious foods or taking their required

community for more than 30 years. The 60-bed facility has 40 beds assigned to longterm care and 20 beds are designated for short-term rehabilitation. The Manor is on five acres, which allows residents who are able, to take advantage of the outdoor garden area. The staff, under the direction of a team of caregivers that includes a physician medical director, nursing staff and physical therapists with consultation from social workers, activity directors and a pharmacist, encourages the best care for residents. Long-term residents make Geneva Lakes Manor their home. Caregivers help them integrate into their new community. Visiting bands perform on a volunteer basis. Daily activities are encouraged for residents able to participate. “We are a community, and residents treat each other as friends, said Aimee Rasmussen, administrator of the Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Long-term residents have semi-private rooms with televisions, internet and cable. Phones must be provided by individual
residents. Hospice patients are welcome to stay and are allowed 24-hour visitors. Visitors are given 10 free meal tickets for meals prepared by the dietary department. After the 10 tickets are used, they are charged $3 per meal. Geneva Lake Manor is a pet-friendly facility. Two large dogs can be seen wandering around the Manor several days a week to provide pet therapy for the residents. Residents are welcome to have their pets brought in for a visit as long as they have had all required vaccines. Core rehabilitation provides inpatient and outpatient services. The rehab patient rooms were recently refurbished with private bathrooms, television, internet, cable and telephone included in room rates. Therapists lead patients through the rehabilitation process with personalized care plans. A new gym will help the therapist lead patients through therapy with the best possible results. Each outpatient is allowed to enjoy 15 minutes in the spa massage chair and
footbath after treatment, one of the new additions to the facility. For more information on Geneva Lakes Manor, call (262) 248-3145 or visit genevalakesmanor.org.
Tender Reflections
1550 Country Club Drive Elkhorn Tender Reflections is a newly opened facility in Elkhorn under the direction of Sanctuary Care Group that provides longterm assisted living and memory care for seniors in a safe and secure environment. Quick adjustment to the new facility is assured when seniors meet other residents and become involved with the many activities available. Many residents might have had minimal social outlets while at home and look forward to making new friends. Exercise is an important part of aging gracefully and each resident is encouraged to join the walking club. Each day the club walks inside or, if weather permits, on walking trails outdoors. Even wheel-chairbound residents can join in the walk. Exercise for the mind is also encouraged.

The facility offers programs focused on readings or games such as reminiscing about a day in history to encourage group interaction. Michele Norrbom, regional marketing director for the facility, said music is an important part of residents’ daily lives. Each day, a variety of music is played to please all the residents, and they are encouraged to sing along or even dance to the music. Karaoke is a favorite with some of the residents. Personal care is provided by caregivers who have been trained to provide assistance with the activities of daily living that residents are not able to do for themselves such as help bathing or dressing. Nurses are not available on site for this is an assisted living facility and not a nursing home. Three meals are served daily in the dining room. They are prepared by Chef Jeff Robinson, who won the local chili cook-off this fall. Robinson is willing to incorporate family recipes into his meals and encourages residents to bring their family recipes for homemade meals.

“Respecting the mind, body and spirit is important in patient-centered care,” said Tracy Cinealis. To promote spirituality, sermons of various faiths are often presented. Even residents who can’t talk are often able to sing hymns, and clergy are encouraged to visit. “Tender Reflections is a secure home. No one can enter the building without ringing the bell. Families are given key fobs to allow themselves in just as they would have the key to a parent’s house,” Norrbom said. “Respite care is available for short-term care up to 28 consecutive days. A daily fee is charged,” she continued. “Respite care is on a bed-availability basis.” For people who care for parents or other family members who need daily assistance, sometimes even a short break of several days gives them the energy to continue that care. Compassionate memory care is provided in both neighborhoods. Private rooms with cable television and spacious bathrooms make assisted care easy for residents and caregivers. All caregivers have received special training to allow them to work with residents in a kind and considerate manner. Most residents are able to remain at the facility until the end of life. Hospice can be provided in-house. “If 24-hour nursing care is needed, the staff will work with the family to find an appropriate nursing home,” Norrbom said. Residents are welcome to participate in any and all activities and social programs. Transportation service is also supplied for local shopping, religious services and medical appointments. Other services can be added for additional fees. An emergency call system and daily check-in service are included in each apartment. Paintings and other works of art on the walls between apartments add a bright and cheerful look to the halls. David Johnson, marketing and community relations director, said residents put the works of art on the walls – another touch of home. The facility has a dining room with tablecloths, fine glassware and china that serves a choice of meals for dinner or supper out. For residents who need limited assistance, a wellness program offers medication administration, help with dressing or bathing and limited access to
medical staff. Meals can be added on an a-la-carte basis. The next level of care available at Fairhaven is supportive care, which takes place in independent apartments. Residents who need some assistance but do not require all the services of assisted living are able to retain all the benefits of living in an individual apartment but have access to medical staff 12 hours daily, medication administration, supportive guidance, help with activities of daily living and some housekeeping. Two meals are provided daily to encourage proper eating and nutrition. The full assisted living division consists of 23 apartments that provide comprehensive care as needed while encouraging the residents to maintain the highest level of independence. Along with physical care, medical staff is available 24 hours per day as needed. Fairhaven has 84 beds and is a five-star
Medicare- and Medicaid-certified skilled nursing unit specifically for rehabilitation and long-term care. All activities of daily living can be provided as well as skilled nursing care. Rehabilitation staff use all services to promote rapid rehabilitation outcomes. Hearthstone, the memory care unit, is in a separate building and is a secure unit with 24 beds for Alzheimer and dementia patients. High quality care is provided by a well-trained staff. The unit retains a high staff-to-resident ratio for optimum care. All needs of the residents are provided. Family visits are encouraged, and living room settings are available for visits. How to pick the right mattress
VERLO OFFERS TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR PURCHASE Buying a new mattress can be a confusing and intimidating process for many people, according to the experts at Verlo Mattress of Lake Geneva. In fact, most people go mattress shopping only once every 10 years so the experience isn’t familiar, and neither is the bedding technology that’s been introduced since most people last bought a mattress. Since mattresses are bigticket items, it’s important to choose carefully to avoid being stuck with a mattress that isn’t right. Here are 10 tips from Verlo to avoid picking the wrong mattress:
of a mattress with latex in the comfort layer. If you wake every time your partner moves or gets out of bed, a mattress that offers motion separation is a good choice. And if you sleep hot, you can find mattresses with components that can help you to sleep cooler. You can also take Verlo’s Sleepography Quiz at www. verlo.com/sleepography for help in determining which mattress would best solve your sleep comfort issues.

Due to a production error, the byline on the feature story in last month’s edition about the Delavan Lake Boat Shed, headlined “A True Classic,” was wrong. The story, chronicling how craftsmen at the Boat Shed restore classic “woodie” runabouts to their former glory, was written by longtime Spirit correspondent Janet DeaverPack. Like the boats themselves, Janet’s story was a work of art in its own right and she deserves proper recognition for her effort. The staff of the Spirit apologizes to Janet and our readers for the mistake. To read the story with Janet’s name properly attached – and it’s worth a second look – visit spiritofgenevalakes.com and select the January edition. The story appears on page 23.
