Sun and Sand
Local beaches offer a boatload of summer fun
If someone would happen to ask an area resident, “Which way is the beach?” the answer provided could take a while. With an abundance of lakes – and, accordingly, beaches – the Geneva Lakes area boasts a wealth of sun and sand on summer days. Whether it’s the large popular beaches on Geneva Lake – Riviera or Fontana – or the more secluded stretches of sand found on Twin Lakes in Kenosha County or Browns Lake in Burlington, the choices are many. The decision is as simple as matching the summer day with your mood – Do I want to hang out with a hundred sun-drenched souls or do I want to hunker down with a book

weekends, but it still had many visitors. Food is allowed and there are many restaurants in the immediate area. The pier out in the lake attracts swimmers who enjoy swimming out to it and jumping or diving in to the lake. Groups of teenagers were playing volleyball in the water without a net and seemed to be having a great time. A lifeguard is on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the summer season. While it is one of the nicest beaches around, it is also the busiest. Tickets costing $7 for adults and $4 for children are purchased from a machine at the entrance to the park. Pay station street parking is available although on some days spaces are difficult to find.
Fontana Beach on Geneva Lake offers areas for a variety of activities, including volleyball.
Big Foot Beach
Big Foot Beach State Park, 1452 Wells St., Lake Geneva, is a 271-acre park on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva. There are many park activities including trails, a playground, volleyball courts, and a 40-acre picnic area. There is a small swimming beach on the lakeshore however no lifeguards are present. Entry is $10 for out of state visitors, free to Wisconsin residents.
Williams Bay
Williams Bay Beach is on Geneva Avenue in Williams Bay, (262) 245-2720. With a clean, sandy beach, Williams Bay attracts families. “I enjoy working here because everyone is so friendly. I meet so many people,” a lifeguard at the beach said during a recent visit. “There is a steady flow of visitors throughout the day.” Like all of the beaches glass and alcohol are not allowed. Parking is available across the street without charge. Entry fee is $7 for adults and $4 for children.
Fontana
Fontana Beach – 505 Lake St., Fontana, (262) 275-6136 – is another large beach that attracts many visitors especially families. According to the beach’s manager, the beach is popular because it has deep sand and a grassy knoll and is kept scrupulously clean. On alternate Saturday nights a family movie is shown on the beach. The screen is brought in by Big Foot Recreation, which oversees the showing of the movie. There is a charge of $1 per person for the movie. Food and beverages are allowed but no grills, glass, or alcohol. The water has two separate lines of buoys, one to mark the shallow end up to four-feet deep and the second section for the deeper water. Beach officials do not recommend going past the second line of buoys. Three or four lifeguards are on duty and one of the lifeguards is usually on the pier to better watch those in the deeper water.

Delavan
In the Town of Delavan, Community Park, 1220 South Shore Drive, (262) 7402335, has a large playground, including a volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and picnic area but the swimming beach is small. The swimming area is delineated to keep swimmers from going out of the area because of underwater weeds. He said visitors tend to come late morning or early afternoon. The beach offers free use of life jackets. Non-residents are charged $25 for a seasonal pass while residents use the beach for free. Daily rates for visitors are also available.
The beach at Lance Park in Twin Lakes has a relatively small strip of sand, but the large grassy areas provide a place to sit and watch children in the water.
Twin Lakes
Twin Lakes, as its name implies, has two lakes – Lake Elizabeth and Lake Mary – with several beaches open to the public. Lance Park Beach along Main Street on Lake Mary in the Village of Twin Lakes is perhaps the most popular. The beach is small with very little sand, but it features a collar of green grass behind it. Several mothers with children were at the beach during a recent visit. No lifeguards are on duty so swimming is at your own risk. There is plenty of parking and no admission fee.
Burlington
Fischer Park on Browns Lake in Burlington, 30326 Durand Avenue, (262) 763-8446, features a wide, sandy beach where children enjoy playing, and a grassy area where parents and grandparents can sit shaded by some of the large trees that make it a comfortable place for all. The park is well maintained. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day during the swimming season. Picnic tables encourage visitors to spend the day and enjoy a picnic lunch. There is a $1 per person fee during the swimming season. While this list is not a complete list of all the beaches available in the area, it includes some of the best and most popular. A day in the sunshine filled with outdoor activity has the makings of lasting family memories.
Teamwork makes building this small lake in the sand at Williams Bay beach successful. The project with a small bridge and waterfall requires constant refilling with pails of water as the water quickly soaks into the sand.

jump and mingle and play. Some will eventually desire a shady spot in which to flop and just be calm for a few minutes, and the trees will serve them well. Unless the two trees die before taking root because the dogs peed all over them – hence the fence. Chuckle if you must, but this level of attention to pet comfort is evident throughout Cedar Dale. Everson, in her first full year as owner, is hands-on, and is putting her stamp on Cedar Dale one nail trimming, overnight stay and pleased pet owner at a time.
Back to her roots
Everson, a native of the Green Bay area, left Wisconsin in her mid-20s and ventured to Boston, where she lived for five years. She spent the last 13 years in San Diego. “I was looking at different kennels and training facilities in California,” Everson said. “There wasn’t one I found that was a good fit. “I saw some on the east coast, and I decided if I was going to move back east, I might as well look for one in the Midwest, to be close to friends and family.” Everson lives onsite, which considerably decreased her travel time to work. “I’m here all the time, which is good and bad,” Everson said. “The commute is nice. I used to spend 45 minutes driving 13 miles. Now I go 13 steps and I’m at work.” Everson said Cedar Dale cares for between 20 and 30 boarded dogs per night and 10 to 15 daily in day care. Everson purchased the business and property from previous owners Peter DiBrito and Bruce Swinton. Everson traveled to Genoa City in October of last year, examined the site and considered her options. She took over in December. “I had to make sure I was coming somewhere I could actually live,”
“
I was helping people get pregnant during the week, and helping animals not get pregnant on the weekends. That’s when I really got more involved in rescue and helping out other animals.”
SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

Everson said. “The proximity to Milwaukee and Chicago and Madison is nice. I didn’t know if I was going to miss being near a city.” Everson said Swinton and DiBrito built a business with a sterling reputation for pampering pets. Cedar Dale is an institution among area animal lovers. “Everyone who has pets in the area either knows someone, or has been here before, and knows of Cedar Dale,” Everson said. “Everyone has good things to say about it.” Everson said she still talks to Swinton and DiBrito, and said she maintains a good relationship with the two. They sold to Everson over other buyers. “There were other potential buyers, but they really wanted me to have it because of my passion for animals and what I wanted to do with the business to help the animals and expand it,” Everson said. “They like all of my ideas – we kind of bounce things off each other – and keep in contact. They’re really great guys.”
A touch of Cali
Everson brought a touch of California to the area and Cedar Dale in several ways. She installed Perfect Turf artificial pet grass for dogs in some of her outside areas. The surface is impervious, and allows the dogs time outside if it rains without making a mess. “It looks great and the dogs love it,” Everson said. “They don’t know the difference. Most kennels and boarding facilities in California have it because it’s hard to grow grass there.” Everson also purchased new blankets and pillows for the dogs, and hung new screens for shade in her play area. Her
Kelly Everson, owner of Cedar Dale Pet Resort in Genoa City, cuddles and kisses with two of the doga in her care Saturday, June 11 during an outside play session. Everson intends to someday use Cedar Dale’s facilities to become a presence in the local pet rescue and adoption community.

In a previous life, Everson worked at a fertility clinic, and spent her time trying to help couples get pregnant. On the weekends she ventured to Tijuana, Mexico, and worked at a spay and neuter clinic run by the Humane Society of Tijuana. She earned a degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. “I was helping people get pregnant during the week, and helping animals not get pregnant on the weekends,” Everson said. “That’s when I really got more involved in rescue and helping out other animals.” Everson said she became more passionate about rescue shelters and pet overcrowding after learning of the thousands of cats and dogs euthanized each year in southern California. “I tried to get as involved as I could, as my time would allow, at all pet events,’ Everson said. Everson said she financially supports a rescue operation in Thailand that keeps dogs from being processed for food. Her passion for rescue is continuing at Cedar Dale. She hosted an event with Safe Harbor of Kenosha on June 25, and is also becoming involved with Helping Paws Animal Shelter in Woodstock, Ill. Everson said she hopes Cedar Dale will grow to become known not only for its prestige as a pet resort and day care center, but also as a presence in rescue and adoption circles. Someday dogs that never felt love might lounge in the shade of one of her newly planted trees. “I’m hoping that we can foster a couple of dogs and keep them here, market them and help them find homes,” Everson said. “We’ll continue to have adoption events – anything we can do to be part of helping get a pet adopted.”

focus is on making sure the dogs are comfortable. Cedar Dale offers grooming services, day care services and boarding. Its primary business is in servicing dogs, but cats are also welcome in Everson’s boarding cattery. Visitors and clients alike will be pleased with the facility’s level of cleanliness – it looks more like a place one might build microchips than a pet day care.
Aaron Hanson tends to some of the dogs in the Cedar Dale Pet Resort in Genoa City during a recent outdoor play session. Owner Kelly Everson recently installed artificial grass play areas, which allow for outside play in spotty weather without the dogs becoming muddy.
Everson said the doggy day care model, as it is colloquially known, emerged and went mainstream in California. Dogs are constant companions for many, especially in southern California, and owners soon demanded a level of care appropriate for a member of the family. More importantly, they were willing to pay for it, and entrepreneurs like Everson filled a need. Cedar Dale opened in

Yappy hour BRINGS PEOPLE, WINE AND PETS together It’s a clever, almost irreverent name for an ingenious idea – Yappy Hour. The concept of pairing dogs, wine and social time is being tried locally this summer by two pet businesses and a winery. Studio Winery in Lake Geneva, Cedar Dale Pet Resort in Genoa City and The Bark Market in Delavan host Yappy Hour every Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Studio Winery. “I like wine and I like dogs,” Studio Winery owner Doug Jackson said. “Our dog kind of roams around here I generally don’t have a problem having dogs around.” Jackson said Kelly Everson, owner of Cedar Dale, asked Studio Winery about hosting Yappy Hour. “Kelly showed up and it seemed like a good merger,” Jackson said. “Customers had previously mentioned the idea, and interest existed.” Everson, who lived in San Diego for the last 13 years before buying Cedar Dale and moving to Wisconsin last December, said vino and Fido are a common pairing in southern California. “We have them all the time in California,” Everson said. “No one knew what they were when I proposed them here.” Everson said Cedar Dale, Studio Winery and the Bark Market advertise the event through Facebook and e-mail marketing.

The intent of the event is twofold. Everson said new business is always nice, but Yappy Hour also helps local dog owners get to know each other and their pets. “You bring your dog and sit on the patio and have wine or beer, and get

BALLOONFEST Waterford’s annual hot air balloon festival will be July 15 to 17
by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
he Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce’s sixth annual Balloonfest launches at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 15, and runs until Sunday, July 17, on the Evergreen Elementary School grounds at 817 W. Main St. in Waterford. The hours of operation for the festival are 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday, sunrise to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and sunrise to 10 a.m. on
Sunday. The nationally known festival draws balloon enthusiasts from all over the country. More than a dozen balloonists from around the nation gather for the event each year to share the love of hot air ballooning. There is no admission fee for the family friendly festival. There is no smoking, alcohol, bikes, skateboards, or animals allowed on school/event grounds. Certified service animals are welcome. The balloons are the stars of the show

during Balloonfest and the event features evening glows, where the tethered balloons are lit up for a spectacular show, on Friday and Saturday nights. For some exciting fun, the balloonists at the festival will square off in flight competition Saturday morning. This event, like all the events featuring the balloons, will only be held if the weather permits. “And all Saturday afternoon we’ll have local music artist performing from Rock Shop and then Clove will give a concert,” event co-chairperson Kathy Robers said. New this year will be the appearance of the Kids from Wisconsin, who will perform a musical review from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. The chamber suggests guests bring lawn chairs and/or blankets for the performance. As in years past, the arts and crafts vendors will show their wares Friday evening and most of the day and into the evening on Saturday. Local and national businesses will also be set up to provide information about their companies in the chamber’s business vendor area on Saturday. All items in the arts and craft area must be handmade by the vendor. No commercial products, buy-sell items, or home party products are allowed. There will be plenty of food and drink available with local and regional food
vendors selling items on the grounds throughout the festival. A kids’ area will have games, activities, entertainment and an inflatable amusement area all three days to keep the little ones busy too. The balloonists will offer tethered balloon rides and there will be helicopter rides during the festival when weather permits. Ballooning is a fair weather sport. Assuming visibility is good, the key consideration is the wind speed. Generally, a launch is not feasible when the wind exceeds 8 miles per hour. The preferred flying times are just after sunrise and just before sunset, when the winds are lighter and more stable. The pilots make a determination concerning the weather. Hot air balloon rides during the event are available for certain sponsorship levels. Others interested in balloon flights at the event will need to contact our balloonist, Ken Walter with WindDancer Balloon Promotions, aballoonride@gmail.com prior to the event. Tethered balloon rides will be available at the event and tickets may be purchased at the event. Tethered rides are offered by Sky Cab Balloon Promotions. The tethered rides are sponsored by the Waterford Medical Clinic.
“We also have a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning which is a lot of fun,” Robers said. While the festival doesn’t charge admission, there is a fee to park. The preferred event parking lots cost $10 a vehicle and the standard/handicapped/ motorcycle event parking lots cost $5 a vehicle. A portion of all parking lot fees will be given back to help the local nonprofit organizations serving as lot attendants. Street parking is available but on a limited basis around the festival grounds.
Calling amateur photographers The chamber is sponsoring an amateur photo contest during the festival. Entry forms can be downloaded at the chamber’s website, www.waterford-wi.org. All photos must be taken at the 2016 Waterford Balloonfest during its threeday run. There is a $3 cost for each photo entered. Anyone may enter unless they are involved in the administration of the contest. There are two contest categories – Adult, 18 years old and older; and Youth, age 10 to 17. Entries must be a 4x6-inch print, unmounted and unframed, with a caption on bottom to tell the story. Description may be typed into the bottom of photo or

Dolenz to headline music series The annual Music by the Lake outdoor summer concert series continues in July with performances by Micky Dolenz, the voice of the Monkees, and YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox. The series’ 16th season, which runs through Aug. 20 at George Williams Collage of Aurora University in Williams Bay, features performances to appeal to a wide range of entertainment tastes. The shows are performed in the college’s Ferro Pavilion on the shores of Geneva Lake. Here’s a look at the upcoming shows:
July 9 THE VOICE OF THE MONKEES MICKY DOLENZ CELEBRATES NOSTALGIC POP Micky Dolenz, drummer and vocalist behind the 1960s pop sensation the Monkees makes his Music by the Lake debut with a special solo appearance at 7:30 p.m. on July 9. Dolenz first emerged as a performer at age 10 when he starred in the TV series “Circus Boy,” which aired from 1956 to 1958, and he continued to appear on television in several supporting roles. From the day “The Monkees” first aired in 1966, Dolenz, along with fellow actor/musicians Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, shot to fame, helping to turn out five platinum albums and three number-one hits by 1968. A dynamic showman, Dolenz gives the audience what it wants: the hits. His voice is unmistakable on chart busters “Take the Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer,” and on other classics such as Serving You For Over 50 Years

July 9 YOUTUBE SENSATION POSTMODERN JUKEBOX PERFORM THEIR INTERPRETATIONS OF TODAY’S BIGGEST HITS Online phenomenon Postmodern Jukebox makes its festival debut at 7:30 p.m. on July 16, performing genrebending interpretations of today’s charttopping songs. Postmodern Jukebox is the brainchild of pianist and arranger Scott Bradlee, who began to test his musical creativity by rewriting 1980s pop tunes as jazz, swing and ragtime arrangements. After posting solo video performances of these remakes on YouTube in 2009, Bradlee became a virtual sensation. By 2013 Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox’s revolving cast of 50 musicians were posting a new video each week and attracting tens of thousands of views. Today, more than 160 videos later, Postmodern Jukebox’s YouTube channel boasts 1.9 million subscribers and more than 400 million views. In just four years the band has released 12 albums, including last year’s “Top Hat on Fleek,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart. As Bradlee recently told Parade.com, Postmodern Jukebox is a “musical time machine,” taking multi-generational audiences down a weirdly nostalgic road without ever straying very far from today’s pop favorites.
Lake Geneva Concerts in the Park open in July The Lake Geneva Concerts in the Park music series opens for 2016 on July 7. The series, held at Flat Iron Park in downtown Lake Geneva, will feature a variety of local and regional musicians on Thursdays in July and August. The concerts start at 6 p.m. and last approximately 2 hours. The concerts are free and have a concession stand selling water, soda and light snacks. Concert-goers are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and pack their own cooler, but are reminded that alcohol isn’t allowed. Here’s the schedule of performers for 2016: • July 7 – Matt Meyers band – rock and roll • July 14 – Mr. Meyers band – Caribbean rock (Dance instruction and performances also provided by Broadway Academy of Art and Dance) • July 21 – Geoff Landon and the Wolfpack – country • July 28 – Kal B Project – jazz • Aug. 4 – Georgia Rae Family Band – Americana with an edge • Aug. 11 – Mark and Gretch, pop and variety.

Museum’s Main Street transports visitors to past

Let’s take a walk down Main Street. Not the Main Street of today’s Lake Geneva, but Main Street as it would have appeared from 1830 to 1930. It’s a visit to a time when life was much simpler than today’s complex schedules, but physically was much harder. Our walk down Main Street begins after entering the Geneva Lakes Museum. The early Pottawatomi Indian Lakeside Village that would have existed in the area prior to its settlement by the ancestors of today’s resident greets you at the entrance. In 1830, the street would not have been paved by bricks but would have most likely been dirt and in rainy season, mud, deeply rutted from the wheels of carriages and wagons. Visitors will meet Molly the cow and Fibber the work horse. Some of the tools on display were used at Black Point – a large estate that is now a museum overlooking Geneva Lake. This area, – according to Karen Jo Walsh, director of exhibits – is currently undergoing a minor facelift with the addition of a barn wood wall where tools will be attached for display.
Businesses past Visitors can stop in at the local businesses, including the blacksmith shop, the general store, the post office, and the firehouse – complete with a 1917 fire engine. And don’t forget to check out the dentist’s office tucked into a corner of the general store. On the other side of Main Street the Victorian parlor is a delight. The Victorian era was a formal and elegant era and everything in the room emphasizes that. Moving onto the 1900s, imagine eating dinner in the

The dual kitchens display features the 1880 kitchen with its icebox to cool food and, next to it, the 1920 kitchen of two generations later with an electric refrigerator complete with compressor on top. It presents a far different look than today’s sleek stainless steel refrigerators with a separate freezer. The kitchen sink in 1920 with running water shows how far things progressed from the 1880 sink with a pump in place. The museum offers a plethora of interesting memorabilia as visitors continue to wander through. A favorite display of many is Ceylon Court. Ceylon Court was a building at the 1893 World’s Exhibition in Chicago and after the exhibition closed was purchased and moved to the shore of Geneva Lake where it served as a home for many years. In addition, organizers were able to create several other display rooms, a library space, a museum store and meeting rooms. An open and welcoming entrance greets visitors to the museum. In addition to displays, the museum has many programs throughout the year. The Tuesday at Two program is just that, a program each Tuesday at 2 p.m. about a historical event or place in Lake Geneva. This month’s topics include on July 5 the Geneva Lake Conservancy and Tales from a Vintage 1958 house trailer on July 12. The program on the 19th will be a talk by author Daniel Rozelle and the final July talk on the 26th will be the Camelot White House in Miniature.
Community programs
The Museum reaches out to the community and has programs that are brought to the people. The Sharing Trunks is a program where teachers may borrow a trunk of items from a specific era to share with their students to enhance a history lesson. Life is a bowl of chair-ies MUSEUM EXHIBIT FEATURES 600 CHAIRS
The Geneva Lakes Museum is currently hosting a chair exhibit. Why Chairs? Why not? Everyone spends a good part of their day sitting in chairs – some more than others. They are found everywhere: outdoor parks, theaters, and in our homes. Each of these places has a unique style of chair designed for a specific use. Chairs are an integral part of our lives. A better answer to why there is a chair exhibit comes from the Geneva Lakes Museum in a quote attributed to David Byrne. “Well, they have arms and legs and vaguely human scale and shape. They are like people – they hold you, support you, elevate you or humble you. They’re funny or elegant, funky or gorgeous, social or aloof. They’re characters with lives and histories…aren’t they?” Throughout time chairs have been an important item in all households and have evolved from simple to intricate. Made of materials that reflect what was available at the time and the style and social standing of the owners, chairs are also a sign of welcome. Visitor entering a home or an office are invited to have a seat. Chairs are found around the dining room table where families gather and share a meal and their day’s experiences. The chair exhibit is a collection of over 600 chairs of various eras, including styles dating back to the Ming Dynasty in the 1300s. Whether a simple milking stool, a chair in the Louis XIV style, or an 1859 Bentwood Chair, there are almost certainly to be chairs in a style that is remembered from childhood. Of the 600 chairs that are on display many are
owned by the museum, some are borrowed from other historical institutions or from friends and members of the museum. The chairs range from sizes that fit in a dollhouse, a child-size chair, adultsized chairs and, finally, the gigantic Adirondack style chair out in front of the museum. Many of the chairs are easy to spot as they are displayed in the open with other chairs of the exhibit, but others are tucked into some of the permanent exhibits. Throughout the exhibit there are chairs with a letter of the alphabet on a placard identifying it and the year it was created. Visitors are challenged to see how many of the 26 letters they can locate? As in most of the museum, the chairs are there to not only be seen, but to be touched and, in some cases, for people to sit upon. If the chair is on the floor and not otherwise tagged “do not sit,” visitors are free to try it out. Those elevated on a box are not for sitting as they are either too weak because of age or on loan from a contributor who has requested that it not be for general use. A whimsical game for children or the child at heart is to locate the 100 stuffed bears that are placed on chairs throughout the museum. Find the 100 bears and you will find 100 of the 600 chairs. A score sheet is available at the desk upon entering the museum. At the end of the exhibit, some of the chairs will be auctioned. These chairs are tagged with a special yellow tag with a picture of a Bentwood café style chair.

The Finch Tavern and Taqueria recently opened at N2062 South Lake Shore Drive, Lake Geneva, on the property that was previously the home of Corleone Restaurant. This new venture is the work of owners Tim Casey and Marty Healy. Casey, Healy, their manager Scott Van Dyke, and their chef Isaac Magana discussed the new business with The Spirit shortly before its opening. The dining room was still in the throes SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
of being converted from a traditional Italian dining room to the homey feeling found in the more casual atmosphere of a friendly bar. The walls had already been painted a variety of bright colors much as one would see in Mexico or the Caribbean. New tables crafted from long planks of wood are stained in a natural hue making a sleek, neutral statement. The understated colors of the tables make the multi-colored walls pop. Most of the tables seat at least eight customers and are meant to be shared in an easy and friendly way.

“
We are working on a different concept. We are a bar, not a restaurant, but we will serve some street food. And that food will be tacos. Not burritos, not enchiladas, just tacos that are easily held and really good.” – Co-owner Tim Casey
The concept for this establishment was the work of Casey and Healy, who have a background in bar and restaurant work. Having previously owned and worked in bars in Chicago, they learned what a friendly neighborhood bar brings to the area. Their restaurant experience includes owning and running the Lauderdale Landing, a lakefront restaurant in Elkhorn. “When we heard this property was available,” said Casey, “we knew it was the perfect place to open this new concept business.”
A fresh idea The idea, Casey went on to explain, was not to open “just another Lake Geneva Restaurant, but to provide an entirely new concept.” When it comes to Lake Geneva dining options, whether it’s a high-end restaurant, a place for a casual salad or sandwich, or just a bar to sit down and have a drink, the choices are many. “We are working on a different concept,” Casey said. “We are a bar, not a restaurant, but we will serve some street food. And that food will be tacos. Not burritos, not enchiladas, just tacos that are easily held and really good.” The focus is on authentic street food. “There will be small servings of other street foods that are easily held such as ceviche, oyster shooters, and guacamole,” said Van Dyke, the manager. For those unfamiliar with the term street food, Magana explained that in the larger cities – where people are in a hurry – they often purchase items from a street vendor that can be carried and eaten with one hand as they continue on their way. This trend has led many bars to add this type of food to their menus and, according to Van Dyke, they have been very successful. The success of the street foods lie in the preparation. According to Magana, the meats are cooked at night then sold during the day. Using techniques such as braising, grilling, pan searing and slow roasting, the meats are cooked to perfection and ready to be transformed into a taco or other handheld item. When using items such as fish in the taco, because it needs a shorter cooking time, it is generally cooked to order. “Street foods are also very

simply prepared,” added Magana. “Only two or three ingredients are used and each of these items is high quality and fresh. Street food is simplicity.” Magana has been cooking street style foods for more than 15 years and said it goes back to the style of cooking he is most familiar with – his mother’s cooking. While tacos will be the primary food served there will be some variety in them as tacos can be made with various ingredients.
Mescal is a specialty As with any bar, the quality of the beverages served is most important. Mescal is one of their featured alcohols. A variety of craft cocktails with mescal will be on the menu. For those of us unfamiliar with mescal, Magana offered an explanation. Mescal is a smoked tequila that can be manufactured anywhere unlike regular tequila which can only be manufactured at five sites. “Tequila,” according to Magana, “can be likened to Champagne, which can only be called Champagne if it is manufactured in the Champagne region of France. Otherwise it has to be called sparkling wine. So this tequila, which is not manufactured at the five approved sites is known not as tequila but mescal.” The Finch will serve a variety of craft cocktails. All fruits and juices used will be SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
especially prepared at the bar. Juices will be freshly squeezed and fresh fruit purees will be extracted from fresh fruit on site. For those who prefer a craft beer, the finest in craft beers will be available along with other liquors and beers. Margaritas will be featured – both plain and flavored. At this time however no frozen Margaritas will be available, but the owners assured that even frozen margarita lovers won’t be disappointed with their margaritas made with the fresh fruit purees.
Dining al fresco In addition to the bar and dining areas, the most remarkable part of the site is the large outdoor deck facing the narrows of Geneva Lake. Sitting out during the day and watching the boats go by and inhaling the beauty of the lake is reason enough to be here, even before adding a great taco and a wonderful beverage. But the best time of all to be here is at sunset. Some of the most spectacular sunsets are seen from the deck, according to the staff. The goal of the owners and the management team is to make this a welcoming and fun location – a place that will be the first choice for a casual evening out with friends. And to add to that experience, the owners plan plenty of music. Some of the best local bands will be chosen to entertain on Friday
35
and Saturday nights and a DJ or karaoke will be offered when there is no band. The large parking lot provides easy parking for customers – unlike the more crowded confines of downtown Lake Geneva. But don’t be surprised to see cars sharing the lot with a boat or two. On the second floor of the building, the business office of the Boathouse will be available to help customers with any boat information and purchases. They will display a boat or two in the parking lot. The Boathouse is a large marine sales outlet with locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Florida. The northern stores combine to be the largest inboard dealership in the Midwest. The shared location with The Finch Tavern and Taqueria gives the firm a presence on Geneva Lake. “The Finch is the place to enjoy high quality beverages, fine street foods, and a great atmosphere at reasonable prices,” Van Dyke said, while the rest of the team nodded in agreement. The Finch Tavern and Taqueria is at N2062 South Lake Shore Dr., Lake Geneva. It is just across the street from Big Foot Beach and customers have the option of arriving by boat. Contact by phone at (262) 2035137 or visit them on Facebook. “
We’re not going to hide anything from you because we’re 20-feet away from you at the furthest.” – Tristan Lind Tristan challenges viewers to, “catch me if you can.” Audiences have responded with reviews have made the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre one of the top two Lake Geneva attractions on TripAdvisor – right behind the Lake Shore Path. “I am thrilled with the huge response we have received from locals and tourists alike,” Crist said. “We see audiences ranging from age 4 to 94 and everyone walks out with a smile on their face after the show. It’s great to be able to share my passion for magic with so many people and provide a unique entertainment option to the area.” Designed to amaze The show itself features illusions usually reserved for large theaters with $100,000 worth of equipment designed to dazzle audiences. “We’re going to make a full-scale motorcycle that works appear right here on this stage,” Crist said. “You will not be able to see this stuff anywhere else in the world. I guarantee as far as a magic theater, this is the most intimate place to see large-scale illusions. “We’re not going to hide anything from you because we’re 20-feet away from you at the furthest.” Speaking of the motorcycle illusion, Crist’s theater is likely the only place you’ll ever see it performed. Crist said the only other person with the rights to perform it is the illusionist who originally designed it. “There’s only one other place (you could see it),” he said. While Crist said he’s often asked if he’s nervous about taking on the challenge, he said he’s comfortable with the prospect because it’s something he and his assistants have been doing for quite some time. “We’re very confident that people are going to see an excellent show, because that’s what we do,” he said. With a longer performance in a more intimate theater, Crist said, his show allows

him to get a bit more personal with the audience and be more of an entertainer than a performer. “Here, we can slow things down a little, I can kind of get to know the audience, talk and joke with them,” he said. “So, a piece like this card trick I’m doing, where it has a story behind it, a reason behind the magic, that’s what I’m enjoying working on.” Crist said the setting allows people to become a part of the show rather than watching from 80-feet away. “Basically, they’re going to come, we’re going to have a party, I’m going to show them a bunch of cool magic tricks and
we’re going to talk to each other,” he said. “You’re really going to be in the show, a part of the show … you’re going to be right there and it’s going to be a little more interactive than what I think people think theater is these days.” Thrills, chills In a live magic show there’s a whole different energy compared to watching it on TV, Crist said, and there’s the added chance that something could go wrong. “I put my one girl in a box and I shove spikes through her,” he said. “It’s a dangerous trick, it really is. cut their ladies in half. I slice mine into eight pieces. We certainly have that danger element that I think people like.” Crist said the show also offers comedy. Though he admits the jokes can be a bit corny, he said there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Though the intimate setting puts pressure on the group to execute each illusion to perfection, Crist said it’s a challenge they’ve embraced. “This is kind of cool ... we’re going to be right here (in front of the audience),” he said. “It’s stuff that’s come about just because it’s, like, now we’re right here in front of people, how are we going to do this? Crist said with so much negativity in the world, it’s his pleasure to provide an opportunity for people to escape real life and “go be a kid again.” “I think that says it all right there,” he said. “Be a kid again. Sit back and enjoy something that you have no idea how it’s done. Try and figure it out if you want to or sit back and enjoy it. I encourage both. “More than anything, just come and have a good time because it’s so rare these days that people can just relax and enjoy themselves.” For tickets and additional information, visit www. WALWORTH COUNTY TO HOST FARM TECHNOLOGY DAYS JULY 19 TO 21
by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
The Wisconsin Farm Technology Days is the largest agricultural show in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the nation. The three-day outdoor event showcases the latest improvements in production agriculture, including many practical applications of recent research findings and technological developments. Each year, it is held in a different Wisconsin county — on a different host family farm. The 2016 Farm Technology Days host is Snudden Farms, in the Town of Zenda, near Lake Geneva. The farm is owned and operated by Steve Snudden, with help from family members and about 30 employees. The farm is the furthest south the event has ever been held in Wisconsin and at the June 2 media day, organizers said they were hoping to attract visitors from Illinois to the event. Walworth County Farm Technology Days Executive Chairman Jim Stowell said it was an opportunity for “our friends in Illinois” to see what farming in Wisconsin is all about and where the food comes from. It’s taken two years of planning to pull off the event and it couldn’t have been done without Steve Snudden and his family and their willingness to open their farm to the public. Jahnke, Wisconsin Farm Report, said the Snudden’s cooperation extended far beyond just hosting the event. “This farm has given more than just time, they’ve made a lot of adjustments to accommodate this,” Jahnke said at media day, explaining that even the location of some crops have been dictated by the event. “I hope people will see the amount of planning, hard work, and folks it takes to put on a decent show,” Steve said in a FTD interview. “I wouldn’t have done it without knowing I was going to be able to SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
get all the help from the committees and volunteers. They really have been the glue to this whole project, and without their help and support, this show would not be happening. My family and I hope everyone enjoys Farm Technology Days and learns during the process.”
Things to see and do Farm Technology Days is designed to show off the best of agriculture in the state and in doing so, offers a plethora of activities to visitors. The field demonstrations are one of

the highlights of the show. More than 300 acres of corn, wheat and alfalfa were planted on Snudden Farm just for this purpose. Visitors are shuttled out to the fields to see how various crops are planted, tended to, mowed and harvested. The daily schedule of demonstrations begins at 10 a.m. and wraps up at 3 p.m. The pick up area for the trams to the field demos is at the north end of Sixth Street West (Zenda Road). Another big attraction to the show is Tent City, which takes months of site preparation and full month to set up for the show. Tent City is the heart of the show and where Innovation Square, Youth Village, Family Living Tent, Family Farm Adventures, Country Mercantile, Educational Square, horse corral, exhibitors, vendors, sponsors, food and much more can be found. Innovation Square is also in Tent City. The attraction is about the size of a football field and will feature new technologies in agriculture. There will also be a miniature Geneva Lake that visitors can walk around and learn about the agricultural heritage of the county from Native American agrarian practices to the innovative turn-ofthe-20th-century animal husbandry

About Snudden Farm The Snudden Farm has been in Steve’s family since 1925, when his grandfather, Harvey Snudden, purchased the farm. Steve’s parents, Kip and Marilyn, assumed ownership in the early 1960s, with Steve taking over in the fall of 1977, during his senior year of high school. Today, Snudden Farms is home to 1,700 Holstein cows and 3,000 acres of corn, forage and small grains. The cows are milked double‐32 DeLaval parallel parlour and freestall facilities and on-farm sand separation facility. Snudden Farms’ milk is marketed through Grande. Snudden raises his own calves and uses an on-farm calf milk pasteurizer and Snudden Farms recently built a 1,500head heifer facility.
Snudden farms 3,000 acres – all within a 10-mile radius of his farm – of corn, alfalfa and wheat, in addition to custom farming 1,000 acres. The farm has its own drying facility and has storage capacity of 140,000 bushels.

calves, $17.4 million. And the county’s farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture, roadside stands, and pickyour-own operations generate $1.2 million a year.
Volunteers needed The event organizers are seeking volunteers for the three-day event. “We need skilled volunteers, we need kids, we need people of all ages,” volunteer coordinator Colleen Lesniak said. As of the June 2 media day, Lesniak said there were about 400 volunteers signed up and that was about half of what they would like. “Optimally, we’d like about 700 volunteers,” she said. Some of the areas still needing volunteers include forklift and skidsteer drivers to help unload the semi-trucks the two weeks before the event, grounds crew, parking attendants and tractor drivers, Lesniak said. “We’re lucky to have such a strong volunteer force in the county, the response has been wonderful, but we still need more people to step up,” she said. Anyone interested in helping out can contact Lesniak at (262) 741-4223 or clesniak@co.walworth.wi.us.
American Idol winner and platinum recording star Scotty McCreery will perform Sept. 4 during the 167th annual Walworth County Fair in Elkhorn. “People have been calling wondering when we were going to announce our main stage entertainers this year and because of this contract, we couldn’t announce until today but it’s really exciting news to share,” fair office manager Peggy Frazier said April 25. McCreery came onto the national music scene in 2011 when he was 17 years old and established himself as one of country music’s hottest new stars. By 21 years old, the singer and songwriter has sold nearly 2.5 million albums, received platinum and gold album certifications, debuted three consecutive albums at No. 1 on Billboard chart. The grandstand line-up for 2016 includes:
Aug. 31 – bull riding and barrel racing, The National Federation of Professional Bull Riders Shock and Awe Tour presented by Rice Rodeo. This year will feature championship bulls and
nationally ranked bull riders;
Sept. 1 – truck and tractor pulls in the afternoon and in the evening Badger State Tractor Pullers; Sept. 2 – monster trucks along with pro ATV races; Sept. 3 – harness racing in the afternoon and a concert that will be announced July 18 on WIIL Rock FM 95. The band is a rock band and is on WIIL Rock’s play list. Contract restrictions prevent the fair from announcing the band until July 18; Sept. 4 – antique tractor parade and
a concert with Scotty McCreery and special guest Chasin Mason who will be filming a music video for an upcoming album release;
Sept. 5 – horse pulls in the morning and demo derby in the afternoon and evening. International Demo Derby will perform three demo derbies. For additional information or tickets, go to WalworthCountyFair.com.
Authorfest to feature Andra Watkins Andra Watkins, New York Times Bestselling Author of “Not Without My Father: One Woman’s 444-Mile Walk of the Natchez Trace,” and “To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis,” will be the featured author at the second annual Beachside Authorfest in Lake Geneva. The all-day event, sponsored by the Breadloaf Book Shop, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 9 on the beachfront near the Lake Geneva Public library at 918 W. Main St. It will feature children’s book readings and music by Edison Blake from the Fake ID’s. The event kicks off with an author discussion panel at 6:30 p.m., July 6 at the Lake Geneva Public Library. The panel features Watkins plus local authors, Edison Blake, Judith Rolfs and Christine Verstraete. Readers will have plenty of materials to choose from with nearly 30 authors representing various genres from children’s and young adult books, to science fiction, mystery, and more.

The Walworth County Master Gardeners will host the Lake Geneva Garden Walk on July 9. Eight area gardens will be featured on the selfguided walking tour.
Garden Walk to feature eight of area’s best Walworth County Master Gardeners will present the Lake Geneva Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 9 beginning at Horticultural Hall, 330 Broad St., Lake Geneva. Cost is $15 per person, and tickets can be purchased in advance at lakegenevagardenwalk.eventbrite.com. The self-guided tour will feature eight local gardens – Bill Thompson’s garden, Jim Weikel’s garden, Black Point Estate and Gardens, Mary King’s garden, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hirn’s gardens, John Anderson’s garden and Highfield Farm Creamery. All profits from this year’s garden walk benefit the Walworth County Master Gardener Association’s scholarship fund for Walworth County horticulture students pursuing a horticulture or agricultural sciences degree. Raffle items this year include a private wine tasting and winery tour for eight people from Staller Estate Winery in Delavan; a handmade garden flower afghan; a private tour of Black Point Estate and Gardens for four people; a full Lake Geneva cruise for four people donated by the Lake Geneva Cruise Line; a 5-foot Black Hill Spruce balled and burlapped from Country Side Trees; a 4-foot Weeping Norway Spruce from Arbor Vista Nursery and various garden items and gift cards donated from Lowe’s, Burlington Garden Center, Home Depot and Peshe’s Floral Gallery and Greenhouse. Thompsons’ garden Bill Thompson’s garden is a daylily collection of more than 1,200 varieties. His collection includes the annual Stout Silver Medal winners since 1950, selections of Pat Stamile’s candy series, Brother Charles Reckamp’s and Dr. Robert Griesbach’s best varieties along with most Award of Merit winners since 1975.
Jim Weikel’s gardens Oak Rest Garden a specimen woody plant and conifer collection, a working “farm-totable” food source, a habitat for creatures and a water garden show place. Weikel has created bloom from February through November using bulbs, broadleaf, woody and herbaceous plant material. The garden is useful to expose many aspects of horticulture, landscape and hard scape design. Black Point Estate Black Point Estate and Gardens is an 1888 Queen Anne summer house museum on the shores of Geneva Lake operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. The Estate was built for Chicago beer baron Conrad Seipp as a family getaway from the heat and bustle of the rapidly expanding city. The estate evokes the sense of a time and place where wealthy urban families escaped to Wisconsin to spend summer days entertaining guests on verandas or sailing on Geneva Lake. In 1901 the Seipp family hired Chicago landscape architect Olof Benson to develop a park-like setting for the estate’s 100 acres. Benson was responsible for the development of Lincoln Park in Chicago and other public gardens. Much of the 1901 design has been lost to changing tastes and property subdivisions, however plans are under way to reinvigorate Benson’s design.
Mary King’s garden The King property was once part of the historic Black Point Estate, serving as the grazing area for the estate’s livestock. The estate has been divided but remnants of that bygone era remain. The old buggy road to the estate can be seen from the King property as well as the Sugar Maple trees that give the street its name. Today the livestock are gone and the barnyard grass has SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
been replaced by native plants and grasses. The house is surrounded by native plantings, and a sample of a no-mow lawn graces the front yard. Walking shoes are recommended.
Melita Grunow’s garden Grunow’s garden was designed by her husband, Bill, a master gardener. He designed and reshaped their landscape over the course of many years. Today it has a mix of evergreen, deciduous trees and showy shrubs. Hirn’s garden A wooded entryway abounding in native plants leads down the driveway past the wisteria-lined tennis court, followed by a series of garden rooms amassed with easy care plants John Anderson’s garden Anderson’s garden is designed to frame Geneva Lake and is filled with native plants and other cultivars to enhance the beauty of the lake. “We love this lake so much that we look at the garden as the frame for the work of art which is the lake,” John Anderson said. The gardens are complete with a gazebo and formal croquet court awaiting an old fashion ice cream social. Anderson is the founder of the Anderson Japanese Garden in Rockford, Ill., which is rated one of the finest Japanese gardens in the world. Highfield Farm Creamery Highfield Farm Creamery is southeastern Wisconsin’s first and only artisan farmstead cheese producer. Farmstead cheese is made on the farm where the Jersey cows are milked. Guests will tour the farm, milk house and view the cheese-making room while sampling Highfield Farm Creamery cheese in the farm shop.

ALEXANDER LUMBER IS CELEBRATING ITS 125TH ANNIVERSARY! 125 YEARS OF QUALITY AND SERVICE.
Alexander Lumber Co. was founded by John Alexander in November 1891 in Aurora, Illinois. Mr Alexander was a Scottish immigrant whose families’ roots in the United States started in Wausau, Wisconsin. In the 1880s, John worked for a lumber company that was founded by John Stewart. Mr. Stewart sent him to Aurora to open a lumber yard there, he with $5,000 started Alexander Lumber Co. buying it from the Stewarts. Alexander Lumber grew with rural Illinois and Wisconsin, establishing lumberyards along railroad stops in centrally located farm towns. By the Depression 120 of these yards were operational. These yards were called “line yards” and as these small communities became towns and the automobile was invented the need for many locations became obsolete. Yards were merged and centralized. The original yard in Aurora, Illinois burnt down before the start of World War II, this yard was never rebuilt, however, the Corporate Offices still are in Aurora, Illinois. Today we have 20 locations in Illinois and Wisconsin
