A sure sign of spring For many, the venerable robin – Wisconsin’s state bird – is an annual herald of seasonal renewal that begins on March 20. This one, perching on the wispy needles of a pine, was captured in watercolor by artist Marilyn Ahler of Burlington. Like the robin, this issue of the Spirit brings signs of spring as well, including ideas for home improvement. But before embracing spring’s warmth, you’ve got the chance to celebrate winter’s last gasp by taking in the high-flying, snow-spraying thrill of snocross racing at Grand Geneva March 18-20.

One of the two bridges over the White River at Walworth County’s White River County Park nears completion late in 2015. The two bridges were recently completed, allowing visitors to hike the property south of the river, which features a scenic overlook of the river.

Footbridges open another section of White River County Park
by Kellen Olshefski STAFF WRITER
The recent completion of two new bridges at Walworth County’s White River County Park has opened up a whole new section of the park to visitors. The park, found just outside of Lyons and Lake Geneva at 6503 N. Sheridan Springs Road, was purchased from Duane Clark for $1.91 million about two years ago – $1 million of which was covered through a state grant – and is comprised of nearly 200-acres on

both sides of the river. With the help of donations from the Wagner, Essman and O’Neill Family foundations through the Geneva Lake Conservancy, totaling $130,000, the county has constructed two bridges for the use of patrons, allowing them access to the once difficult to reach property to the south of the river. Don Howell, a member of the Friends of the White River Park, said construction on the bridges occurred early this winter. Howell said the first bridge is

really an impressive feat, covering a long entry to the bridge – similar to a gangway – with the span over the river only making up about a quarter of the full length. Additionally, Howell said, the bridges had to be built up high enough to allow for kayaks to make it under them in high water. Howell said the bridges have opened up a whole new section of the park, giving visitors an opportunity to see the park in a whole new light. Former Walworth County Director of Central Services Kevin Brunner said previously about 70 percent of the park is uplands, with the final 30 percent consisting of wooded lowlands along the river.
Soaring vistas Howell said there are now hiking trails on both sides of the river, allowing visitors to hike up to high point overlooking the river. Howell, who has avidly paddled the White River for many years, said he’s never truly experienced that vista before. “I was always so intent of the fast rapids and turns that I never wanted to look up,” he said. “I just didn’t know what was there until I had a chance to get back there.”

Howell – who hiked across the ice to the south side of the river last year for the first time – said the south side of the park features beautiful trees, higher elevations and plenty of evidence of wildlife, something he hopes will be revealed with warmer weather. Howell said benches overlook the river and it’s truly a beautiful sight. “It’s really a wonderful experience,” he said. “This has been my playground for 35 years. I’ve been paddling that river since 1980 and now I get to enjoy the land on both sides of the river.” In addition to the two new bridges, Walworth County has also put in a place for visitors to launch kayaks and canoes at the park, including slabs to make it easier for paddlers to get in and out of their kayaks and canoes.
Winter hike celebrated
The Friends of the White River Park hosted a Winter Hike in late January to take visitors across the two new bridges to see the south side of the park. The hike continued to the far bridge where hikers crossed the river to the trail on the south side, which climbs to a high overlook of the river below. The hikers then celebrated with s’mores along the trail after the trek.
Future of the park Howell said there are hopes for quite a few more improvements to the park over the next few years. First and foremost, Howell said, the plan is to have a pavilion put in sometime this spring at the

He said the group is currently working on raising funds and applying for grants for the project, which could have many uses upon completion – such as dances and other community events. While people are already sledding at the park, Howell said the plan is to make it even better for potential sledders. He said the plan is to restore the natural prairie, eliminating invasive species that have made their way on to the property over the years, and expand the hiking trails at the park to feature about five miles of trails. Howell said there are several groups involved in bettering the park, including the Geneva Lake Conservancy, the friends group and the Lake Geneva Garden Club, which is looking to put in decorative plantings near the parking lot and maybe even a butterfly garden. “There’s a lot of thought going into making this a great park,” he said.

Drones become hot commodity for owners of local hobby stores
by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
One doesn’t need to spend more than a few minutes with two area business owners to get a sense of the passion and excitement they have being involved in the world of drones. Scott Parks, owner of Hounds Detectors & Hobbies in Burlington, and John Danno, owner of HobbyTown USA in Lake Geneva, agree that the business of drones has literally taken off in recent years. A drone is basically an unpiloted flying robot that operates remotely

Some drones use Wi-Fi signals through a cellphone while others utilize Global Positioning System (GPS.) “The quality from the cameras on them is amazing. It’s crystal clear,” Parks said. “Plus they’re really fun.” “They have really taken off and the prices have come down a lot recently,” Danno said. “It’s much more affordable now to buy a good quality drone.” Parks said one example of something drones are commonly used

Drones come in a variety of sizes and prices, ranging from $20 for a drone without a camera to thousands of dollars, dependent on features desired by the user.

And Parks himself uses one for his second business – an industrial power washing company. “We use the DJI Inspire 1 drone to take photos and video of job sites, before, during and after working on them. I edit the videos – it’s broken into frames – and the contractors we work with absolutely love seeing them. It gives them a very different view of the job,” Parks said. Danno said he’s sold numerous drones
for use in a variety of business settings. “I’ve sold a lot to real estate agents who use them to shoot video for virtual property tours and some to the Dairy Farmers of America who used to spend hours driving around on ATVs searching for cows,” Danno said. “Building inspectors, too. They use them to look on a roof or high-rise building in a much safer way than climbing up there.” The smallest, and cheapest drones
available, for $20 to $30, don’t have a camera and are used “to simply fly around,” Parks said. “But you can buy a drone for $60 that has a camera on it – and takes good quality photos. It’s crazy,” Parks said. “I like to explain it this way: Mercedes Benz has always been the first car company to come out with new safety features. But then the other car companies copy them at lower costs – and sometimes better ways to do it,” Danno said.

In the world of drones, Danno said, the DJI Phantom was the first to hit the market but over time others, including Horizon Hobby and Yuneec, came out but in much larger sizes than the original DJI drones. The prices begin at about $60 for a drone with a camera; $150 for one with a camera that has live-feed capabilities, and go up from there in price, he said. Parks said for owners of a Go-Pro camera there is a newer option out there in the drone selection. “If you already have a Go-Pro you can get a really nice drone to use with it, that has housing to hold the camera, for a lot less than a similar-sized drone that has a camera in it,” Parks said. A drone comes with batteries or a battery pack, Parks said. Most drones can be charged using a USB port on a computer but the bigger ones have their own charging supply. Battery life, on average, is about 30 minutes for a larger drone; 10 minutes for a smaller one, he said. Both HobbyTown USA and Hounds Detectors & Hobbies includes training for new drone owners and pledge to help customers make the right decision in what drone to purchase for their individual needs. “It comes down to finding out what a person wants to use the drone for. There are a lot of lower priced ones that can serve a
purpose just fine,” Danno said. “I want them to know how to use and I want them to actually use it.” Parks said he enjoys “talking to people about them and will be glad to help them choose what’s right for them.” Danno said some of the features people enjoy include “follow me” and “watch me.” In a drone with the “follow me” feature, it does just that, follows the person – on a walk, run or bike ride, for example. “And while some controllers are fairly large, especially those with the screen in them for the live video feed, there are binding devices that can be paired with the drone. It doesn’t show the live feed but the binding controller is smaller and can easily fit into someone’s pocket or attach to a fitness armband,” Danno said. Both Danno and Parks said the near-constant improvement in drones has been a challenge to keep up with at times and the changes keep coming. Danno said while most drones are quads, or have four blades and are best used in more open spaces, there is a newer one that has six blades and some special features. “It’s going to be out in a couple of months and has what’s called collision avoidance. In the video shot with it, it’s flying through a heavily wooded area and darting around trees. It’s

amazing,” Danno said. Parks said one example of just how far drones have come is the speed some of them can travel. “One goes 100 miles per hour and the live feed is viewed through goggles. It can go down narrow nature paths and makes you feel like you’re flying through there,” Parks said. Danno said he plans to offer a new venue to drone owners this summer at a racetrack he operates behind Showboat Theater just outside of Lake Geneva. “It’s kind of a simple concept, really, using hula hoops and water noodles. The drones will follow the racetrack path and fly through things in a race. It should be really fun and is something people are very interested in,” Danno said. Registering your drone As of Dec. 21, 2015, anyone who owns a drone that weighs more than .55 lbs. must register with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft System before they fly outdoors, according to the FAA website, www.faa.gov. The owner must be 13 years of age or older (if the owner is younger than 13, a person 13 or older must register it in their name) and a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. The cost to register is $5 and can be done through the FAA’s website. Registration is valid for three years and once a person receives a registration number, it can be used on all unmanned aircraft that person owns that meet the online registration criteria. “When you fly your drone anywhere in the nation’s airspace, you automatically become part of the U.S. aviation system,” the FAA website states. “Under the
law, your drone is an aircraft. So while the rules for drones may be different, you have the responsibility to operate safely, just as a Cessna or 747 pilot does.” A safety checklist on the site lists the following guidelines for flying drones: • fly below 400 feet • always fly within visual line of sight • never fly over groups of people, stadiums or sporting events • never fly within five miles of an airport without first contacting authorities • never fly near emergency response efforts • never fly near other aircraft • never fly under the influence For more information about registration of, or regulations for operating a drone visit www.faa.gov, send an email to UAShelp@faa.gov or call (877) 396-4636.

A passion for
Luisa’s makes the kind of pizza that has people going to great lengths by Christopher Bennett CORRESPONDENT
Pizza Night means something different for a couple in Tennessee who fell in love with Luisa’s Pizza in Wheatland. Owner Paul DeLuisa said the couple, who started frequenting the Wheatland restaurant when they lived in New Berlin, gets Luisa’s pizza sent to their home. The pizzas are made, frozen, packed in dry ice and shipped south via UPS. DeLuisa said he figures the cost comes to about $40 per pizza. But it might be worth it for the pizza voted Kenosha County’s best west of Interstate 94 each year since 2011 by the readers of The Kenosha News. DeLuisa’s formula for exceptional pizza is deceptively simple, and combines more than 30 years in the restaurant business with top-notch ingredients. DeLuisa’s artistry earns accolades for its

cheesy goodness. The restaurant’s Facebook page is filled with taste budapproved testimonials. Out of 197 reviews Luisa’s averages 4.6 out of 5 stars. Here’s just a sample: “At nine months pregnant I have not been able to find anything that tastes good all week until tonight’s dinner from Luisia’s. Chicken (parmesan) with la rossa sauce. Baby and I are very full and happy!” “Not only the best pizza, but their catered food and server were great at our party this past August. Everyone loved it!”
“I love (the) food and people that work there! Always full of good energy and cheer!” “Excellent food, great service and good prices.” On a frigid February Thursday morning DeLuisa holds court in his restaurant, and engages in the behind-the-scenes activity that helps make everything work when the doors open for business and customers hungry for his food file in. He meets with a representative from a Kenosha-based non-profit he’s helping in

a fundraising endeavor. He meets with a representative from a western Kenosha County elementary school – again, about a fundraiser. There are suppliers in the house, and DeLuisa chats with staff about the tasks of the day. He admits paper work and the drudgery it entails are not his favorite parts of his position. He makes pizza. DeLuisa started in the pizza business at age 12 at Valeo’s Pizza in Kenosha. At some point each of his five siblings also worked at the Kenosha institution. “At 12 years old, he trusted me to grind the cheese,” DeLuisa said. “He had me making dough.” DeLuisa has worked other jobs in his past. He worked at a factory, at Menards, at a trucking company and even at a worm farm in Racine. His heart is in the dough. DeLuisa will celebrate 20 years at Luisa’s this summer. “I’ve always done pizza,” DeLuisa

competitors. “It’s really not hard,” DeLuisa said. “One of my (employees) asked me, a long time ago – he’s a cop now – why our pizza is so good. “I said, ‘We don’t buy crap.’” DeLuisa is far more eloquent than his glib assessment of ingredients leads one to believe. In addition to starting with exceptional ingredients and consistently using the same ingredients, DeLuisa can deconstruct the process of putting together a pizza like an auto mechanic might deconstruct diagnosing fault in an engine. DeLuisa recently bought a new bowl for mixing dough. The old one developed a hole on the bottom after being dragged SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

ur homes are where we spend our time, raising our children and, in general, making a comfortable life for those we love. It is not surprising that across the nation, there is a trend to remodel or enlarge our homes to make life more comfortable. As our families change, the home that was so comfortable when there was only one child in the family is no longer a good fit when there are three.
Is it time to move to a larger home? Or is there a way to put an addition on the house and be able to remain in the same neighborhood and not uproot children from their friends and school? Chris Stebnitz, owner of Stebnitz Builders, a full service residential remodel and design firm located at 204 Commerce Court, Suite 3, Elkhorn, recently offered his views of the joys and

perils of renovation and additions to the family home. Stebnitz Builders has been in business in Walworth County since 1972 when Stan Stebnitz began a small home repair and remodeling business in Delavan. As the company grew, Stan’s sons Dan, Dave, and Gary joined their father in the business. In 1985, Dan, Dave, and Gary purchased the business from Stan and it continued to grow throughout Walworth County. Twenty years later, Dave’s son Chris became an owner and continues the reputation of quality work that three generations of the family has established.

According to Chris Stebnitz, there is not just one popular style of remodeling. Many of those remodeling their homes redo them in the original style of the house but with modern amenities. This will give them the clean updated look they desire while still retaining the old charm of the house. Having a plan for what one is trying to accomplish with the renovation is most important. “Design is much different today. There was a time when all finishes had to match. Woods couldn’t be mixed,” Stebnitz said. He went on to explain that now various woods are often used together. Kitchen and bath remodels are still the most requested, according to Stebnitz. Everyone wants a spacious kitchen with all the amenities that a top chef would use. Room for family and friends to gather around while cooking – making it a friendly gathering place is also at the top of the list. Bathrooms with roomy showers, and a large family room with a fine fireplace to gather the family on cold winter days are also dreams for some families. Other homeowners may be looking for an
outside facelift to make their home more attractive from the street.
Finding a contractor So where does one start? Talking to a contractor who can listen to your ideas and work with you to make them not only a reality, but the home of your dreams is the start of the journey. To this end, Stebnitz has a proven way of hearing all the customer has to share. Using a program that they have SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
developed after years of feedback from customers, called Procedural Listening, ensures that all the customers’ ideas are heard. “Research shows that we only hear and retain about 30 percent of a conversation,” Stebnitz said. “Procedural Listening teaches one to ask specific relevant questions about your project and then completing documentation so that every response is shared with all associates working on your project.” Stebnitz recommends interviewing
27
contractors before making a final choice. Be sure that you are working with someone who is compatible with your needs and style. Get recommendations from family and friends who have had successful work completed. When you do select a contractor, be certain that you understand the contract. If not bring someone with you who does, he advised. Stebnitz Builders will work out a package price for completion of the entire project. Each item to be used will be listed, including such things as number of 2-by-4s and brand of fixtures. The package contract will be detailed so customers are aware of exactly what they will receive. Stebnitz advises homeowners to be well prepared for an addition or renovation. Such projects set off an emotional roller coaster experience with highs and lows along the way. Ask questions about what is the next step and how long

When most people purchase a home, they look at how it works for their family today. Most don’t think about changes that occur as they age or possibly develop disabilities due to accident or illness. But as people age there are often considerations that must be made regarding home safety. In 2005 Stebnitz became trained in the Certified Aging In Place Specialists, a program offered through the National Association of Home Builders to provide safe renovations, whether simple or complex, that will allow one to stay safely in their homes despite physical challenges. “It is never too soon to think about safe renovations for the future. Think down the road at where you might be 10 to 20 years from now,” Stebnitz said, “as it never is too soon to make some of the changes when doing an addition.” While people often think of grab bars in the bathroom when talking about making a home safe, there are many other things to consider. Will you be able to turn a doorknob if you develop arthritis? The solution is to replace those knobs with French handles. Carrying laundry from the second floor to the basement and back may not only be difficult, but unsafe. Consider moving the washing machine to the second floor. Are inside doors and hallways wide enough to accommodate a walker or wheelchair? If you use a wheelchair, counter tops may need to be lowered and electrical outlets raised so they can be reached. As a Certified Aging In Place Specialist, Stebnitz will discuss these details before a project is complete so that a home is safe and accessible. “Color visualization becomes important as vision starts to fail. Having a countertop colorful enough that the person can see where it ends, allows him to place his glass on the counter

Exploring countertop options GRANITE IS POPULAR, BUT VERY PRICEY Granite has long been a popular countertop material for homeowners looking to combine functionality with aesthetic appeal in their kitchens. But granite is no small investment, and homeowners looking to refurbish their kitchens should know there are a multitude of countertop materials available to those working on a budget or those who simply want to give their kitchens a different look.
SOLID WOOD Wood countertops create a warm, homey interior. Butcher-block counters are less expensive than granite and do not necessarily need to be ordered from a specialty retailer. But wood can stain and dent and can even burn when hot kitchenware is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeowners maintain the appearance of their wood counters for years to come.
MARBLE Marble tends to be less expensive than granite without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Diligence in wiping away spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is necessary for those who choose marble countertops.
SOAPSTONE This is a natural stone composed mainly of mineral talc that
gives the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can sometimes have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than granite, soapstone is still high-density and will hold up well. It’s impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not damage it.
QUARTZ Quartz is a manufactured product made of stone aggregate and polymers compressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but requires less work to maintain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonporous material, so it will not need routine sealing and resealing.
GLASS Glass countertops are back-painted, so homeowners can order just about any color they want. Glass will be tempered, so it is safe and heat-resistant. Glass can scratch, though, so it is not as impervious as other materials.
CONCRETE Concrete is another material that can be colored to match homeowners’ whims. Concrete is relatively inexpensive compared to other countertop materials, but it can crack or chip.

to pinch and damage the young tender stems. Place seedlings in their own clean container filled with moist sterile potting mix. Plant the young plants at the same depth they were growing in the original container. Thin seedlings started in individual containers as needed. If you planted several seeds in each small container remove all but the healthiest one. Prune the weaker seedlings to ground level, so the remaining seedling can develop into a strong
transplant for the garden. Continue to grow your plants in a sunny window or under artificial lights and water thoroughly and often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. Soon it will be time to move your homegrown transplants into the garden. Melinda Myers is a gardening expert with more than 30 years of horticulture experience. She has written over 20 gardening books. Her website, www. melindamyers.com, offers gardening videos and tips.

You can get a jump on the growing season by starting your favorite or hard-tofind plants indoors from seeds. Starting hard-to-find plants, like many of the heirloom or newly introduced varieties, from seed may be the only way you will be able to add these to your garden. Plus, you’ll be extending the growing season and bringing the fun of gardening indoors. by All you need is a little space, a few supplies and of Melinda course seeds to get started. Myers COLUMNIST Check the back of your seed packets for planting directions. Most recommend when and how to start seeds indoors as well as any other special care the seedlings will need. Purchase, recycle or make your own containers from newspaper. Sanitize used pots by dipping them in a one part bleach and nine parts water solution and then rinsing them with clean water. Fill the containers with a sterile welldrained potting mix or seed starting mix. Once the containers are filled, plant the seeds according to the seed packet directions. For most seeds, plant them twice their diameter deep and gently water. Continue to water often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. Extend the time between watering and increase your seed starting success by covering the container with plastic. Or purchase a seed starting kit, like the selfwatering Growease seed starter kits. Move your containers to a sunny window as soon as the seedlings emerge from the soil. Turn plants often to encourage even growth. Or increase your success by growing seedlings under artificial lights. You can make your own light system or purchase tabletop, shelf units or easy to assemble light systems, like Stack-N-Grow (gardeners.com). Keep the lights four to six inches above the top of the seedlings for best results. As the seedlings grow, be sure to maintain this distance by simply raising the lights or lowering the containers. Move overcrowded seedlings to larger containers once they have two sets of true leaves. The first leaves that appear are rather indistinct and are called seed leaves. The next set of leaves look more like the mature plant’s leaves and are called true leaves. Once the next set of true leaves forms, it is time to transplant overcrowded seedlings. Use a fork or spoon to carefully lift out the seedling. Clusters of seedlings can be dug and carefully teased apart before planting in individual pots. Be careful not

SERVICE For 65 years, Wilmot Auto has thrived on honesty, integrity by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
As a fixture in the community for 65 years, Wilmot Auto Service has transcended time, courtesy of the same principles held by its founding father, Harmon S. Garwood. “The service that we provide to our customers and our honesty of auto repair is what keeps people coming,” said Dwayne Garwood, a thirdgeneration owner of the business on highways C and W. His grandfather bought an old repair shop and gas station in 1951 when gas was 26 cents per gallon. “We started out with just an auto repair and gas station, Standard Oil, in 1951,” Dwayne said. After 10 years in an aging building dating back to the 1800s, Dwayne said, his grandfather built a new

structure next door, where it has stood since. While the business thrived, so did Harmon Garwood’s family, consisting of his wife, Kathryn, and six children. One of the six children, Tom, became the eventual owner of the business and followed the same vision. Tom later transferred ownership to Dwayne and his wife, Cindy, in 2009. In the ensuing years, Wilmot Auto Service added a convenience store and another service bay to keep up with demand, and offset any new challenges, including changing technology. “Cars have changed a lot over the years, they don’t break down as much, things are different now,” Dwayne said. In the early days, Dwayne said, most vehicles needed new brakes annually, but now can last 60,000 miles. With changing technology, it requires continuing education for those working in his repair shop. “The changing of technology has been a challenge,” Dwayne said. “We get people through schooling and hire highly qualified people.” However, in a small community, word of mouth and keeping it in the family
has been instrumental in the long-term stability of the service center. “We have third generation customers. I am taking care of people, such as my grandpa took care of my customers’ grandpa,” Dwayne said. “A lot of our business thrives on referrals.” Along with a strong customer base, the team has brought in an influx of new people, including Trevor resident Lyle Wright. Wright recalled a moment 15 years ago when his old Ford Probe broke down and required immediate help. Wilmot Auto Service took care of Wright with honesty and integrity. “My car broke down, down the road, I hand-pushed it to this driveway, I thought it was going to be a $1,000 bill it ended up being only $200,” Wright said. Since then, he got new vehicles, but still comes to Wilmot Auto Service for routine services, including oil changes. In addition to a convenience store and new service bay, the business conducts authorized Wisconsin Department of Transportation emissions tests, which draws in more traffic. “It brings in new customers, they come in, meet us, and like the friendliness and
customer service,” Dwayne said. “Then they try out an oil change and see how we are.” Aside from oil changes and emissions tests, Wilmot Auto Service offers transmission repairs, new exhaust systems and routine maintenance. Dwayne said routine maintenance has been key for one of his customers, who owns a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, and could become a milestone. “We have one customer with 450,000 miles on his Chevy Tahoe, so we are trying to get him to 500,000 by the end of the year,” he said. Cindy Garwood said safety and reliability are other factors related to the long-term success of Wilmot Auto Service. “It’s about honesty and integrity, and taking care of our customers, and making sure they are safe on the road,” Cindy said. Care is not limited to their customers, with teamwork and support of one another as another driving force. “We try to be there for everybody and all our employees,” she added. “It’s about being a team player and keeping it family oriented.”

Commerce with a conscience More than 20 area charities receive Keefe Kares grants

In addition to organizing this and similar volunteer opportunities, the charitable Keefe Foundation distributed $31,000 to area non-profit agencies that serve local people.

n 2015, the Keefe Real Estate team collectively raised a record-breaking $31,000 for regional charities and now embark on the company’s 74th year in southeastern Wisconsin with even greater charitable goals for 2016. The Keefe family established the Keefe Foundation in 2006 as a charitable arm of the real estate company. For nearly eight years, it operated as a successful matching program for its agents and staff, giving thousands of dollars a year to individual-designated 501c3 charities. More recently, the newly focused foundation effort, Keefe Kares for Our Communities, came to full fruition. In 2014, Keefe executives Dennis Carnes and Tom Keefe played integral roles in the program’s creation. “We wanted to make an even greater, more meaningful impact within the local communities we serve across Walworth, Racine and Kenosha counties,” said Carnes, who today serves as honorary chairman of the Keefe Kares Board of Directors. “Our primary goal was to help more directly in the places where we live and work 37

and in ways that reflect who we are as real estate professionals and residents both.” Through months of planning, Carnes and Keefe enlisted the input of Keefe agents and staff on how best to roll out a foundation program that would forge new and tangible ties with close-to-home partners in core social service need areas – such as health, food and shelter. Subsequently a governing board was formed, served by Keefe team members Tom Pederson, Alison Lieske Olsten, Janis Hartley, Lisa Pitcher and Stacey Schultz, under Carnes’ and Keefe’s leadership. “It has been a truly inspiring first year for Keefe Kares, and I am so proud of our entire Keefe team’s commitment and vision going forward,” said Tom Keefe, the company’s vice president. “I firmly believe that every check Keefe can give to such worthy local charities is an investment not just in that one place, but also our collective future as a
community.” In 2015, the Keefe Kares board made rolling-grant gifts of $250 to 5,000 to the following 501c3 organizations, following review of each organization’s applications and need priorities: The Sharing Center, TLC/Transitional Living Center, Aquanuts Adaptive Aquatics Program, Treehouse, Lake Geneva Water Safety Patrol, Special Olympics, United Way, VIP Services, Town Oaks Homeless Shelter, Open Arms Free Clinic, Walworth County Alliance for Children, Lake Geneva Conservancy, Love Inc., Alliance for Prevention of Family Violence and the Whitewater, Kenosha, Delavan, Lake Geneva, Elkhorn, Big Foot and East Troy food pantries. Money raised by the Foundation for Keefe Kares comes from several sources. Nearly 70 percent of the donations come from individual agents and staff, many of whom have contributions auto-
deducted from every commission or paycheck throughout the year. These contributions are further matched by Keefe Real Estate. There is also a board-sponsored fall harvest party of gratitude and celebration for Keefe team members and their families, sponsored by community partners Johnson Insurance, First Bank Financial Centre and Southeastern Title. Outside contributions to the Keefe Foundation Inc. are also welcomed. Another way Keefe Kares helps is through organizing volunteer opportunities to help local non-profits with special requests or ongoing needs. Dozens of Keefe agents and employees served hundreds of hours of volunteer time in 2015 cleaning out classrooms, sending packages to soldiers and gathering food and holiday gifts for those less fortunate. For more information about Keefe Kares, visit keefekares.com or contact Tom Pederson at (262) 348-3257.

Shopping with a purpose 9 Lives Boutique benefits Lakeland Animal Shelter
by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
visit to Lake Geneva, especially on a shopping expedition, is always an exciting way to spend the day. The specialty boutiques offer a fine selection of unusual items for you or for that special gift 9 Lives Boutique is one of the real finds in Lake Geneva. An upscale resale shop, founded in 2007, it has made its home at its current location, 812 Geneva Street, in downtown Lake Geneva for the last four years. The shop features a range of
products that include decorative home accessories, clothing, shoes and boots, jewelry, china, crystal, and furniture. However, at this shop there is a distinct difference – proceeds from items sold are donated and for a worthy cause. The 9 Lives Boutique is a part of the Lakeland Animal Shelter. All profits from the Boutique go directly to the animal shelter. They are currently being used to fund a new and larger facility to care for the rescued animals that make the shelter their home. According to Kristen Perry, who has been Executive Director of the shelter

for the past 10 years, the two operations have a very synergistic relationship with each one aiding the other. “Profits from the 9 Lives Boutique directly benefit the shelter,” she said. “Volunteers often spend time at each facility. Occasionally, cats or dogs from the shelter spend time at the boutique to meet and greet shoppers.” Those who adopt pets from the shelter become aware of the need for donations to 9 Lives Boutique of quality clothing and home accessories that they no longer use. Steady growth The boutique has moved twice since it originally opened. Each move provided more space for displaying the many donated items. Even now there is often not enough space to store and show large pieces of furniture. Many are kept at another location with a billboard on display in the store for those interested. The store is now located on the first floor of a large home and each room has its own theme and display. Everything on display sparkles. That is due to the hard work of the volunteers. The entire staff at 9 Lives is made up of volunteers. With no salaries to pay, all profits from the shop can be used for the benefit of the shelter. The volunteers put in a hard day. They accept the donations, and then each item is made to look its best. They great each visitor with a friendly smile and offer to help them find the types of items they are seeking. Many items need to be researched to determine their real value so that they are priced accurately and provide a good value for the customer and a good profit for the shelter. Cindy, a volunteer, said that the customers help with the pricing. If they see something that is way underpriced, they will point it out to the volunteers. The shop can best be described as an upscale resale shop. They accept most household items in good condition. Furniture, clothing, collectibles, and other home décor items are enticingly displayed. The only items that are not donated are the sweatshirts and tee shirts with the Shelter theme. These are new items purchased for sale to benefit the shelter. Themed displays The first display room when entering the store is perhaps the most unique and filled with a variety of diverse items. Yet it does not seem overwhelming or over crowded. Centered in the room is a large, claw foot antique table with matching chairs containing a display of a complete set of china and crystal stemware. home a fresh look. On the other side of the room, next to the checkout desk with its large wooden dog on its front, is a counter full of jewelry. Many items are unusual costume items of another era including many watches. Several men’s pocket watches – from days when every man wore one – are on display. To complete the eclectic look of the room is a small bistro table and two chairs. Of a very different style than the heavy claw footed dining table, this set is one of clean smooth lines and made of metal. It is a Danish design manufactured by Fritz Hansen. While it is one of the high-end items available, it is still a bargain compared to its original price and the going price for such items at online SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
sales websites. The clothing room offers a variety of dress and casual women’s clothing. A complete wall of shoes provides a variety of styles and sizes. A pair of tall red boots of the softest leather available is eye-catching. The boots are designed by John Fluevog, who is well known for his unique designs often including a message on the sole of the boot. On this pair, which do not appear to have sustained much wear, the heart-shaped heel has the Fluevog signature on the bottom. They are priced at $250. Don’t let the price of those boots scare you. There are many more boots in a price range that may better suit your budget but these special Fluevog boots do merit a look.

9 Lives Boutique, as stated on the sign, is a distinctive resale boutique. Its profits are used to benefit the growth of the Lakeland Animal Shelter.
Don’t forget Fido It is only fitting that a resale shop that is for the benefit of an animal shelter should have a room devoted to objects for pets. What was the downstairs bathroom is now the pet supply room with a bathtub full of pet toys for dogs and cats. Collars and leashes are available along the walls. The Lakeland Animal Shelter is a private non-profit, no-kill shelter that was founded in 1978 to take care of homeless animals in the area. Originally built to shelter 25 cats and 25 dogs, the shelter has grown to care for more than 2,500 animals yearly. There are usually 200 to 300 cats and 50 to 60 dogs in residence. Any domestic

pet is accepted, including but not limited to rabbits, ferrets, and horses. The current building of 4,000 square feet is bulging from the number of animals. The new building being built with 9 Lives Boutique funds will add another 14,000 square feet to the facility. Phase one of the project, a building of 4,000 square feet is now completed and will soon be open to the public for new adoptions. Another $1.4 million dollars is needed to finish the expansion. While 9 Lives Boutique supports operations and expansion through the sale of secondhand items, donations directly to the shelter are gratefully accepted. Throughout the year, several major fundraisers are held to support the Lakeland Animal Shelter. Check the website at LakelandAnimalShelter. org for a complete list of this year’s fundraisers. Or call (262) 723-1000 for more information about fundraisers, adoptions, or volunteer opportunities. “We are always looking for volunteers, both at the shelter and at the boutique,” Perry said. “Some volunteers finish their shift at the boutique and then come to the shelter to exercise dogs. Volunteers, donations, and shoppers all have to come together to keep the boutique profitable.” It is easy to see that all those involved with the boutique and the shelter love the animals and love their work. 9 Lives Boutique is at 812 Geneva Street, Lake Geneva and is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday’s hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It can be reached by telephone (262) 248-3122. Venerable birds are clucking their way into backyards throughout area by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Knowing what you eat and costeffectiveness. Those are the primary motivators to raise backyard chickens for Genevive Klimala and Brian Schaefer of the Town of Burlington. “While we can’t afford to raise cattle and hogs, and things of that nature, we can raise chickens to get eggs from,” Klimala explained. According to the University of WisconsinExtension, more people are becoming interested in raising poultry in urban areas. Klimala and Schaefer have raised chickens for the last five years. Initially, they started because Klimala wanted to know what she was eating. “The initial reason was because of when you learn about how your food is produced and how it is raised, you learn that there is a lot of cruelty and inhumane methods that are used to raise our livestock,” Klimala said. Klimala – formerly of Chicago – said she first came up with the idea when approached by another resident in the Town of Burlington who wanted to sell a flock of birds. Total cost of the first flock, at seven months old, was about $25. While Klimala was eager to pursue it, Schaefer was skeptical about cost-saving measures, but went along with the idea. “I was not in favor of the chickens. I figured I could finally get her to give up on the idea,” said Schaefer, who took meticulous notes. “I kept detailed records of what everything cost, how many eggs we got and kept it all on a spreadsheet,” he said. “I was surprised the data showed that they paid for themselves.” Each chicken lays an average of 300 eggs per year, and through their personal experiences, it is more than enough to help other families and friends. The flock of six birds produces about 36 eggs per week, with some getting disbursed to members of Schaefer’s family. “Our flock is more than enough to do Sunday breakfasts and daily stuff and then share with his parents and his brother,” Klimala said. “You got five people that are consistently receiving cruelty-free eggs.” The end plan However, raising chickens come with responsibility. By the third year, chickens stop producing eggs. Chicken owners then need a humane plan to deal with the animals, and prepare for the arrival of a new flock – what Klimala calls “an end plan.”
It is illegal to dump chickens, but she has heard stories of the animals dropped anywhere from the local animal shelter to the side of the road to farm property. Klimala and Schaefer cull the chickens and use them for food – which is what they did with the first flock. Schaefer ordered a batch of 26 that included 20 broiler hens from a hatchery in Waterloo, Wisconsin at $2 per hen. The difference between layer and broiler is the total weight, with layer hens topping out at four pounds, while broiler hens can go up to eight. Schaefer cited postal service requirements, which note hatcheries require bulk shipments because the birds need to stay warm in transit. “Because they ship through the post office, we need a minimum order. They have to stay warm so we bought 20 broiler chicks, so they can ship them,” Schaefer said, noting an order less than six requires in person pick-up. How they started When the two began, Schaefer build an eight-by-eight-foot pen with recycled plywood and chicken wire, with costs estimated at less than $100. SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
Both acknowledged it has been relatively simple to raise the chickens properly and humanely. “They are very easy to take care of,” Schaefer said. “You take them home, put them in larger boxes, with warming lamps, change the bedding out every two days, they pretty much raise themselves,” Klimala said. Additionally, Schaefer said, noise is minimal. “The neighbors are fine, because we only have hens, so they do not crow,” hw said. However, there are two challenging points in raising the birds – winter and during peak egg production. While chickens can survive outdoor temperatures near zero degrees, it is important to keep them dry and free of moisture to prevent frostbite. In the winter, Klimala and Schaefer change the water and bedding more often and use heated lamps to keep them warm. Most municipalities do not allow chickens, however, some are now making exceptions due to the growing popularity of limited urban chicken farming. People are advised to check with their municipality before proceeding.
